reporting on assignment here in Istanbul Turkey [Music] just landed in Kabul Afghanistan at Hamid Karzai International Airport [Music] [Music] oh look mr. snow packs and you're going to you got a couple rounds hanging here that's fine but you're still going to push this back in you're gonna walk this into place so yeah you got a couple rounds hanging here but if you remove this safety arm and then pull the trigger it'll kick out call round all the live rounds and links all right so that direction is South that's the moment Valley if you can see the white mountains those are the spin gars this like little high ground right here we call that PT Hill on the backside of that is pay ha Valley and from pay ha Valley it'll open to back daraa Valley and further east is the Bandar Valley they're getting ready to drop a 500-pound bomb just outside of the camp here an attempt to perform terrain denial for any fighters that may be coming up on the ridge line so we're gonna check that out right now our game plan as follows type 2 control bomb on coordinate 1 by gbu-38 advisory 9 line [Music] lines one two and three from the overhead elevation six five eight seven feet terrain denial Charlie ami cotton is often called to meet with commandos stationed in the area as a Special Forces soldier he's expected to work by through and with local Nationals and foreign militaries but overcoming the barriers and language culture and training can be frustrating dude up the road said he killed a civilian it's bad Adam the guy won't arrest them he wants us to call him up here and talk so he can talk to him too he also said a civilian hit an ID in the valley doesn't have an exact location it doesn't have an accurate sitrep on everything that's going down so that dude it's always like that it's always ran them back and forth everything I need I need he'll never provide any accurate information some of the guys are really good they're really like factual when they speak no action that dude normally just talks and asks for stuff we're on a mountain patrol we're on the side of a mountain where they the ODA hasn't been yet there's multiple caves out here and some kids but also some military age males walking around on the side mother's been shot up quite a bit you've never been into finding shoes cotton and his team are preparing for a mission into the bagged our Valley but need the help of a local Afghan militia leader who controls access to the area although he's technically a local police commander he has a controversial reputation because of his ties to the Taliban despite this cotton needs to strike a deal with him soon the guy that you just you just died like during the fighting so he's like he's one of the villages guys [Music] I would say if you haven't been arrested now don't worry about it don't worry about any rumors you hear about anything else so every time when you come here we are ready for the missions you into the mission say there's are no mercury the American Israeli when you're desperate 1x kebab we can even need a Sucre doctor they watch another hunter predominant a more predominant applauded freedom not a new rule no more couch America nature will evolve um already from myself and my soldiers they are harnessed to yes we did a mission well for you guys we all hope you guys will support you guys because you guys just came from other countries like from America in Afghanistan to help us support our country and our forces in here so no worries about that will help you guys I will support it yes he came up here because yesterday he was attacked by a member of um and he was explaining what happened because he's worried about like reputations that people will tell us false information and we won't work with him anymore we tell him to come up each week because he basically maintains security at the mouth of that Valley that he's at and he's not afraid to fight Isis so that in itself is a reason that we feel like it's valuable to maintain a relationship with him we've seen quite a few guys digging on trails that we commonly traveled between us so we're going to go up there and check out what he's doing and seeing if he's up to no good are you jumping in the gun okay hey on the left side there should be an m4 holder okay [Music] [Music] [Music] they had observed to military-age males digging in a trail between us and Butler and that they were seeing them implant something or play something within the holes and put dirt in bags and carry it back down the hill we bet down by the main way be on track found the potential ie and now the guys are picking on what to do pretty much there was some guys coming up on the road I think they buried something right on the road that leads into the OB we found one of the dig sites or we found two of the dig sites we weren't able to confirm if there was anything actually buried we got a grid of the area and then we'll go back with NMR G and make sure to clear that and make sure there's nothing in there that's the issue we're gonna come back up and clear this valley so kind of like a little practice run to see ground truth on how we can formulate our plan to come and rid this valley [Music] [Music] just this mountain vehicles were getting ready to go on an Sno mission which stands for surveillance and observation are going to be going up on a ridge line that directly overlooks a valley that Isis currently controls so could get hairy but there's only one way to find out [Music] so in the past I put the F Peter they put IDs in the deity's so you know they're clearing it just watch your stuff that was a pretty tough climb we're up at the SNL position now sweeping for mines Isis K has been known to leave mines and I need up on top of these ridge lines that overlook their positions so we got to be extra careful stick to a lot of dry stuff like that 8:22 for the compounds behind it and then near the center you have what I call green windows because they're all green window frames are sitting at 980 [Music] to control just heard gunshots and an explosion coming up from the valley below us American troops have taken contact in this valley every single time they've came to it this is an Isis stronghold [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you dropped a 500 pounder or 250 pounder suppressive fire down you can quote [Music] hey did they hit a nightie yeah anybody dead [Music] he had a KA and some wounded in action so we're gonna back down on top of the back off of the ridge and just as we're getting ready to push back out looks like they hit a couple more IEDs so it's a real mess down there now we're stopped in a security hold again trying to figure out what's going on from like four fighters coming here and with Isis guys have a lot better training just got back off the ridgeline we're now heading back to the oak Pete ALP took quite a bit of fire they had some wounded and I believe one killed in action we took a little bit of fire up on the ridge line multiple f-16s dropped a lot of ordnance as well as some gunships it doesn't matter how long the war has been fought what the politicians say or any of the other issues that seem to dominate headlines in place of caring about the war these soldiers are fighting they are the men on the ground and they worry about one thing taming the moment Valley [Music]
