Marcus Capone: Historically, the selection process was designed to find the strongest individuals, both mentally and physically, and take those individuals and train them to be the best and brightest warriors. Sean Haggerty: We're putting people through something that they've never gone through in order to give them a perspective about what their limit is. - Instructor: Ready! - All: Ready! Instructor: Get down! Bert Kuntz: We're gonna add stress and pressure and cold weather and sleep deprivation. We're gonna take their food away and we're gonna drop a smoke hammer on 'em, and it's gonna suck. All: Nine, ten! They're here to ultimately get no prize, no reward. - Instructor: Overhead! - All: Overhead! Grey: Whatever their own motivation is, they're here to see if that motivation will carry them to the end. - Don't let go! - I know you're great in the civilian world, but you're in our world. ( music playing ) Grey: Every person has their breaking point. The weakest person is the person who thinks they can't be broken. ( music playing ) Instructor: Hurry up! Hurry up! ( music playing ) Instructor: Say the words. "I quit." Man: I quit. Instructor: Why are you here? Man #2: Just want to be a better man. Instructor: Why are you really here? Man #2: This is the only way that you can find out what type of person you really are when you're pushed to the limit. ( music playing ) Man: I know that selection training is the most difficult mental, physical challenge in the world. Man #2: It's a pretty unique process. I'm not actually sure what to expect. Man #3: I think we're about to endure something that's going to change us for the rest of our life. Man #4: If I quit, I'm not gonna be any better than I am right now. Man #5: I just really want to make it. That's all I can think about. Woman: Since it is mentally challenging, it's gonna open up things that I don't really know about myself that I want to know. Man #6: I've spent my entire life pushing the limits, but everybody has their breaking point. Man #7: You either have to rise to the occasion or accept that it's bigger than you. - You the class leader? - Yes, sir. You know a little bit about military bearing? No, sir. Do you know that everyone's stuff is supposed to look like everyone else's? - Yes, sir. - Okay. Well, it's not. You got guys' water bottles, some are holding them, straps are facing the wrong direction. Guys don't have belts on. People with pink hair in the back. You got five minutes to go inside and make sure everyone's in uniform before you come back out here. You got it? - Yes, sir. - Time starts. Hurry up. Hurry up! They've done tests for years trying to figure out who can get through selection training, whether it's Ranger school, BUD/S or Delta Force selection, but we never can tell until it happens. Sometimes you never know a person until you put 'em in that situation. Still wrong. ( whispered ) Switch your sides. Capone: You guys and girls are gonna be trained and led by the nation's finest combat veterans. - Are you cold? - No, sir. - Then why are you shaking? - Capone: We are going to be putting you through the most physically demanding and mentally grueling program that you've ever been a part of, I can guarantee you that. Instructor: 16, have you seen the movie "Full Metal Jacket"? Capone: From this point out, you're ours. - That means no phone calls. - Fix your strap. No cell phones, no computers. - You cold? - Capone: No going to the mall. You will have no contact with the outside world. You all should consider yourselves lucky because when you're done with this program you get to go home to your families, your spouses, your kids, your girlfriends, your boyfriends. Stop shaking and just relax. Breathe. Capone: The Special Operations warriors that go through this type of training, they deploy for combat. Few rules of the road: quitting. You have your numbers on your sleeves. If you quit, you'll pull your tag off. You'll say "I quit," you'll hand me your tag, and you'll go see the medic. Does everyone understand? All: Yes, Instructor. This isn't a game, and it sure as hell isn't a show. Just because there's cameras filming-- they may be capturing what's happening, but they're not in charge. We are. - Get down! - Get on your faces in push-up position. Capone: Class leader, push 'em out. - Down! - All: One! - Down! - All: Two! Instructor: Don't touch your knees to the deck! - Down! - All: Five! - Down! - All: Six! - Down! - All: Seven! - One, two, three. - All: Eight! - One, two, three. - All: Nine! - Sound off! - All: Ten! - One, two, three. - All: Eleven! Instructor: You guys have been in a plank for almost four minutes. You've had tons of time to train for this. This is like yoga special right now, and it's crushing you. Do not show me weakness, or I will attack. - Yes, instructor. - Dude, get your ass out of the air. If you're already struggling now, I gotta say, - it's gonna be rough. - I know, instructor. - All: Six! - Sound off! - All: Seven! - Louder! You sound off or you're going home. Kuntz: That shark attack, that first meeting with us that's intense and it's PT-oriented, we've all gone through that between basic training, airborne school, SFAS for the Army and Green Beret guys, BUD/S for the Seals, or Ranger school, we've all gone through it. It is miserable. Instructor: Whoo! We got sand. Remember, it could always be worse. 30 seconds ago you didn't have sand all over your backs and your hair and your faces. It could always be worse. The purpose is to weed out the ones that don't want to be there so we can focus on the ones that do. Go hit the lazy river. Go, go, go, go! Put your face under the water. Do not hit the wood with your giant asses. - Hurry up! - Let's go, Pink. - Hurry up! - Chest and face are down! All the way. Move, go, go, go, go! - Get under there! - Drag your hips! They're gonna be cold, they're gonna be wet, and it's gonna be miserable. You've got amazing '70s hair. Go. Capone: The ones that mentally escape from the pain, those are the ones that are gonna be able to get through this. - Whoo! - Bullets are shooting over you! - Get low! - Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up, hurry up! Why do you have perfect hair right now, number six? Why does your hair look so good? It's gonna be painful, remember that. That hair is amazing. That hair is amazing. Kuntz: We're trying to strip them of their comfort. We want to make it real clear that we are in charge, this is gonna be by our rules. Instructor: You're gonna be miserable. Kuntz: If you can't handle that and don't like it, pound sand and go do 5Ks and color runs. Instructor: Yeah, brush it out of your hair, there, Fabio. Instructor #2: Does anybody want to quit? All: No, instructor! Capone: We have a hill. It's called The Hill. You have four minutes. Go. - All right, got it. - Instructor: Do not touch me. Hurry up, that way! Don't be last! Don't be last! Hurry up. Hurry up! Come on, number five! ( music playing ) Kuntz: We'll have people that are way in over their head from the get-go. The goal is to get rid of those people. It's not personal. There is zero emotion. You are evaluated purely on your ability to complete the task to standard and your ability to work in a team under high stress. I have a bad back from wrestling. I don't think my back can handle this. Say the words. "I quit." I quit. - Quack! Quack! Quack! - Back to hustle, like you're supposed to. Do you think it's gonna get harder or it's gonna get easier? Say that again? No, no. Hell is a fictional place. This is-- where we're at is very real, and it's worse than Hell because it exists and you're already there. There you go, there you go. Come on. You can even jump with the quack. Quack, quack, quack, quack! It's awesome. All day long! It is gonna get worse, and worse, and worse, and worse. I actually promise you. Get your butt lower. Get your butt lower. Lower. You're not duck walking. Everyone is doing it but you. That's not a duck walk. That's a standing up walk. Come on, 16, come here. Come here, 16. You want special attention, you don't want to duck walk, this is what you get. It's gonna be like this all day every day, over and over and over again. There is a Pyle in every class, and you are him. Do you think you should be carrying that with you? Then why are you? You know what? No, take the board with you. You like it so much, you take it with you. - Capone: Bellies. - All: Bellies! - Back. - All: Back! - Bellies. - All: Bellies! Push-up position. Grey: It's hard to pull 400 pounds, isn't it? That's your new friend. You're gonna do everything with that board. Get back in formation. That board better be on top of you. It better not be on the ground. ( music playing ) Instructor: You have two minutes, as a class. Hit the hill. Go. Hurry up, hurry up. Move, move, move. You done? - Give me that. - ( Velcro separating ) - What number? - 21. Grey: The people that leave this program early whatever their motivation was, it wasn't enough. Or maybe it just was the wrong motivation. - You just quit. - I know. You were doing-- you were doing just as good if not better than three-quarters of the class. - Doesn't matter-- - It's the first thing I quit, ever. Your mind will quit faster than your body, physically. - I know. - So that's what happened. - That's what happened to you. - And my mind just gave up. Tell you one last thing. There's a difference between quitting and failure. Okay? You quit, but the only way that you fail is if you never come back. Okay. - Okay? - Yes. - Hurry up! - Come on! - Hurry up! - Come on! Grey: The vast majority make the mistake of thinking that this is a physical event. It's not. Wishing you'd done some more cardio, huh? Grey: In fact, no serious physical event is a physical event. No military selection is a physical event. They're all mental events. In the Special Operations, they want to try to put you in the most stressful conditions. Roster number 20. Come over here. Bowen: In the interrogations, you will find out a lot about yourself, and we will find out about you. Put your hands on the wall. ( heavy breathing ) ( music playing ) Lean forward. - Capone: 20, what's your name? - Adam Pepper, sir. Where are you from? Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, sir. Are we making you nervous? No, sir. Well, a little bit, sir. I won't lie. Capone: You have some experience doing this type of stuff, - don't you? - Yes, sir. What's your background? Uh-- my, uh... - CBP, uh-- - What is that? It's Customs and Border Protection. I am the guy that is stamping your passports when you come back from international travel. Those guys that sit in the booth and make you wait three or four hours, that's me. My mission is to protect and serve the United States government, sir. ( music playing ) Why are you so upset? Why are you so emotional? I-- when-- honestly, when-- when they put the-- the-- mask on me, I didn't know what to expect. Why are you here? Because I want to be here, sir. Eh... - It's gotta be more than that. - No, that's it. - Just "I want to be here." - You just want to be here. - I want to be here. - Why do you want to be here? 'Cause I want to be pushed. I want to be motivated. You guys didn't ask us to be here. We're here because we want to be. I want to be here. Why? 'Cause, sir, this is life. You guys know it. You've been pushed your whole life. This is life. You fight. You get hurt. Life isn't fun always, but you go through it. It's a process. This is the only way that you can find out what type of person you really are, when you're pushed to the limit. When you go back over there, don't talk about coming in here. Don't talk about anything we talked about. - Do you understand that? - Yes, sir. ( music playing ) ( music playing ) Ray Care: The selection is not to set people up for failure. We give them the tools that they need to succeed. All we do is, is we throw obstacles and barriers in the way of that. I'll tell you what I'm looking for personally. I'm looking for leaders. I'm looking for guys, or ladies, to challenge themselves. Two minutes to get your blouses and be back in the same spots Go. Capone: Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up. Care: Class leader, what are we doing? Class leader. If you're dressed, drop. If you have your ( bleep ) together, drop down. Fix your ( bleep ), number four. Fix your ( bleep ). If you're still getting dressed, you stay up and the rest of the class can wait for you, 'cause you want to take your time. One, two, three individuals want to take their time. Class leader, what are we doing, class leader? Grey: Number 20, you have to have the most experience of putting on this type of uniform probably than anyone here. How could it possibly be taking you longer? Permission to speak, instructor. No, permission to do nothing. - On your face, 2-0. - Drop down. Number 12, you think highly of yourself. You're the new class leader. Class leader, take charge. You have five minutes. Make it happen. - Everybody up. - All: Up! Grey: The reason you name a class leader, you always want the entire class to feel like we're only talking to them when it's in the context of an evolution or we're teaching something, whatever it is. You don't really want to talk to the whole class for just logistics so you nominate a class leader to put the instructions to, and then they disseminate it. All right, everybody face me. What we need, we need four teams of seven. Four teams of seven, and we're gonna arrange those teams of seven from tallest to shortest. - Does that make sense to everybody? - All: Yes, team lead. All right. You learn a ton about a person when you put them in charge. I'm gonna give you guys team numbers. Team oneteam two, team three, team four. Team one, over this way. Follow Instructor Kuntz. Instructor: Finally getting some confidence and leadership skills. Three. - All: Lift. - Legs, not your back. Kuntz: Log PT is universally used throughout all the Special Operations indoctrination and selection processes. If you look at the history of log PT, you know, you will find photos from the early 1900s of guys in the military doing log PT. It's a remarkable tool, specifically for teamwork. Getting five people tor six people or seven people to pick up a 500-pound log, you will see immediately who's working and who's not working. - Come on, you got it. - 30, what's wrong with you? ( grunting ) You smoked right now? - You done? - Kind of, instructor. I will handle it. - You will? - Yeah. One, were you not on it, when he was holding it just now? No, I was, I just picked it up a little more. Could take more. Grey: There's a lesson in the log, that it's easy if everyone puts in equal work. Where it gets devious and horrible is when someone starts sandbagging, and doesn't put in equal work. I can watch your faces, and tell who's working and who's not. Instructor #1: All right, I want all eyes up here on me. Instructor #2: Listen up. Instructor #1: Even though you have seven people on these logs, they are heavy, and your teammates are gonna quit on you, I promise. The most important thing about doing this is gonna be safety. You have to work as a team to maneuver this log, and maneuver this log around you. We're gonna give you a couple commands. The first one is the one you have right now. This is the chest carry. Everybody repeat it. The chest carry. All: The chest carry! - The chest carry. - All: The chest carry! Instructor: The next command we're going to give you is going to be left shoulder. All: Left shoulder! Instructor: When we give you the command of left shoulder you are gonna execute it by moving as a team to your right and putting the log on your left shoulder. Does everybody understand that? All: Yes, Instructor. - Instructor: Left shoulder. - All: Left shoulder! Instructor: The next command is going to be overhead. Kuntz: That phase of selection for me was one of the more miserable. They had us by roster number, and I just happened to be stuck on a log with guys that were six-foot plus and I was 5'8". I can remember to this day the cadre standing right next to me and the first sergeant even came out and they're standing next to me going, "Roster number 98, why are you not helping?" And in my head, I wanted to say, "'Cause I can't touch the ( bleep ) log." Instructor: And, yes, some of you are shorter than others. Figure it out. If you can't do anything else, help in any way you can. - Does that make sense? - Yes. - All: Overhead! - Grey: If you're weak, and you're giving 100% on the log, you might be the weakest link on the log, but if you're giving me 100% on the log, I'm totally okay with that. What I'm looking for is the person on the log that's not giving 100%. They're strong, but they're letting other people do more of the work to save themselves. - Overhead. - All: Overhead! - Right shoulder. - All: Right shoulder! - Overhead. - All: Overhead! Instructor: Off your head. Don't put it on your head. Do not put it on your head. How are you still weak? You're the biggest guy here. Get it off your head. - ( grunts ) - Instructor: Right shoulder! - All: Right shoulder! - ( groans ) Kuntz: We're moving around, as instructors, and you know, we're whispering and talking and evaluating people. 30 was one of the ones where we were kind of saying, "Hey, is this guy--" It's hard to tell. Is this guy faking? Is he sandbagging? Is he putting in work? And then I specifically tasked them with doing an exercise that I call the elephant walk where they were holding the log between their legs and they're hunched over, they've got their legs and their arms. And everybody else on the log quit, and the log didn't move and 30 was the only one holding up about three quarters of that log. That poor little bastard, he was trying as hard as he could. Hurry up, hurry up. - Right, left, right, left. - ( groans ) Hurry up, hurry up. - Hurry up. - Sorry, you guys. What are we doing, number 30? Grey: We saw him fall off the log twice, and we kind of went over there kind of getting ready to get into him about it, and then we saw him get back on the log and then we watched the dynamic, and we realized, he'd fallen off twice 'cause he was giving 100%. - ( indistinct ) - Hmm? Left, right, left, right. You know what? You know what? - 30, stop. - Switch out. - Switch out, drop the log. - 27, take 30. Get in the back. Get up there. You're getting crushed because some of these people on this log don't give a crap. Move. It's amazing how much complexity can come from something so seemingly simple. Do a sit-up with the log, from left shoulder to right shoulder, - down to a knee. - Instructor: Up! - All: Five! - Grey: Whatever it is is a seemingly easy movement with the log, but they all have to work in unison or the movement doesn't happen. Okay, hold it, hold it, hold it! ( music playing ) Care: That log PT is legit. Just a straight kick in the balls. If anybody says, "Oh, that's fake, or--" Stop on by my house. I've got a 200-pound log. We can do some log PT with the preparatory commands, and you will go away a changed man or woman. Kuntz: Eating is not an option, and neither is drinking water. so for those of you that say, "Hey, I don't want to eat or "I'm done eating" or "I'm just gonna take like three or four bites," I promise you, this is going to get harder every single day. If you don't front-load carbs and eat now, you're gonna be ( bleep ) in the next 48 to 72 hours. Your body will just shut down. You'll cramp. Your body will start eating itself. Literally, your muscles are gonna start turning on you. From here on out, you will eat exactly like this, in the seats you're in. You'll clean up your ( bleep ). Your trash can... Again, this is a perfect example. Whoever left the trash can like that, the last person that put that ( bleep ) in there doesn't care. That's your last warning on the garbage can. And that's your last warning on-- sit down. Sit down, 11. Sit down. That's your last warning on the bunks. The next time every one of your bunks doesn't look the same, we're gonna toss your ( bleep ). That room's gonna look like a tornado hit it. Guys like 11 are the ones that are gonna finish this thing. The guy that's always volunteering. The guy that's always asking to help. There's about four of you guys in this class right now. The rest of you guys suck ass. You're doing your own thing. You're on autopilot. "Oh, just stay away from me. Don't look at me. They're coming over to talk to me again." There's about four people in this class that are helping, moving. "Oh, your trash can--" He didn't even let me finish, and he started to get up to go fix the trash. Whoever did that's the same loser that probably is late to work every day, who's disrespectful, who blames everybody else in the world for their problems. I promise. "It was somebody else." "I quit 'cause of an old injury." "It was Sean's fault. Sean's fault-- The reason I'm late is 'cause Sean did it." That's who some of you guys are. You can either fix it now, and do what you came here to do and get through this course, or you can keep being ass( bleep )s and slobs and lazy. And I promise you you won't be here at the end. - Capone: Ready. - All: Ready! One, two, three, - four, five, six. - Stop making noise, 27. - Seven, eight. - All: One! - Instructor: Down! - All: Seven! - Down! - All: Eight! - Down! - All: Nine! - Down! - All: Ten! Instructor: Hey, number 16. Stand up, please. Stand up. All right, number 16. You've not done push-ups, right? So I'm gonna make you duck walk around this pit after everybody gets in their seats right now. Everybody get in the barracks, go. - Barracks, move. - Including you. - Move. - Take your time, take your time. - Five, four... - Same seats as earlier. Three! Two! And... one. I got a-- I got a patch. Wait right here. Your guys's lives are gonna be miserable. Now that 16's gone, let's do some push-ups right. Drop. All: Drop! I mean, this is a-- ( panting ) You guys are crazy, but-- It's a meat grinder. It's a meat grinder. - And I mean, it's-- - How does a sword get strong? - It goes in the fire. - Yeah. It comes out, it gets beat on, it goes back in the fire, it comes out, it gets beat on. Okay? You put your sword in the fire, and keep forging it harder and stronger, over time, and that blade will get sharper and sharper and sharper. Take this and use it as a lesson. It ain't the end. This is one little-- one little dip in the fire. Yeah, for sure, I will. - All right? - Yeah. - Dude, take this and use it. - Thank you. Thanks. You don't mind if I ask, what happened to your arm? Uh... a little dip in the fire. - Dip in the fire. - Little dip in the fire. Uh, I got blown up, in Sadr City, Iraq, which is just south-- it's basically South Central Baghdad. Back in '05. It was during a nighttime raid on a house, and, uh... just one of those bad situations where, you know, it wasn't really one big thing that went wrong or even two. It was a hundred small things that just weren't usual, and they all kind of came together to lead to a-- you know, at least for me, a catastrophic event. ( music playing ) Grey: This next iteration is gonna be CS gas exposure. You are gonna be exposed to CS gas. Bear in mind, this is something that all basic trainings do, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines. Every instructor here has done it I can't even count how many times. Tear gas... ( chuckles ) That is something that we do to condition your body to a chemical attack. Grey: The purpose of this drill is to get you to experience something that you need to fight through, but it's not just in your head. This is a chemical that is chemically affecting your body. So what you need to do is you need to recognize that, let the physical part go. You don't have control over that. This is a drill for you to fight through this chaos. Fight through this chemical affecting your body, keep your composure, get decontaminated. If anyone does not want to enter, tear off your patch and hand it to one of the instructors, and have a nice day. Haggerty: There's a lot of dangerous chemicals out there. And when you're fighting terrorists, they don't have any rules. You always have to be ready for that. Hurry up. Your other people are already in there. It's to push you to another extreme. When you can't breathe, you can't see anything, it's more about mind-body control. ( music playing ) Instructor: Everyone ready? All: Yes, instructor. All right! Time to get weird. ( music playing ) Oh, look at that. Witches' brew. Care: You embrace the suck. You take it, you suck it up, and you look to the man or the woman to the left and right of you and you say, "You know what? We're gonna get through this ( bleep ) together. Let's do it." - ( coughing ) - Suck it up! Suck it up. Suck it up. There you go. ( coughing ) Suck it up. What we do as instructors is we see who runs and we just make a little mental note about that. ( coughing, indistinct chatter ) You got this. You got this. Not much more time. - Where can I get out? - That way. Suck it up. - Suck it up. - Don't give up! Don't stop! Head through it. Head through it, go. Go, you, go, go, go. Out. Right here. ( indistinct chatter ) - Instructor: Slow down. - Instructor: Let's go, move away. Keep going. - Keep going, 23. - Is she all right? Come to my voice, right here. - Right here. - Keep coming. Line up in a line, right in front. Line up in a line. Don't touch your face! - Line up in a line, right in front. - ( groans ) Do not touch your face. Don't touch your face. - Stand up and breathe. - Keep walking away, let's go. Do not touch your face. Stand up and breathe. - Breathe fresh air. - Do not touch your face. Stand up and breathe. - Breathe, breathe. - Nobody touch their face. Care: What we're looking for is, is when the ( bleep ) hits the fan, people are gonna stay in there and take it. Instructor: Blow it out! What I saw was there was about, I think, three to four individuals that, soon as it hit the fan, they jet. They ran out the back. ( music playing ) Care: But what happens with that is, the individuals that are in there, standing there taking it, taking that abuse, taking that pain, taking that-- that burn, they're saying to themselves-- they're putting those guys in that category of leaving when it gets bad. And then what has to happen in this form of training is, is those individuals that ran have got to re-prove themselves to the team. ( music playing ) It's just one of those things where you learn. It's-- everything's temporary. You know? If you can just be calm, and kind of let the pain flow through, it'll eventually end. ( exhaling strongly ) - ( coughing ) - Do not cough on me. Instructor: So, number five? Instructor #2: Yeah, that was weak sauce. He was our first crier, correct? - Yes. - Did he physically cry? He, uh-- he said he wasn't physically prepared for this. Is there a non-physical crying? Is there-- is there a mental crying? ( music playing ) Man: I will pass out today. Man #2: Oh, yeah. If I have to run again? I was so scared they were gonna say, "Do it again." - 'Cause honestly, it tastes like the gas. - It does. This-- whatever this is tastes like the gas. 11 and 12 are super strong. Number 11 kind of looks like a hipster Jesus. Dude, I really like number 11. - He's a tough cat. - And he is a team player. Any time somebody gets punished, he goes and joins them. - Yeah, but number 12-- - 12 is a strong class leader right now. Grey: He is. He needs to be fired. Let's talk about 20. He is way in chaotic hyperspeed mode. - Yeah, he's very-- - He's very, very nervous. Yeah, he's making this harder on himself than it is. - He's gonna make it today. - Oh, he'll make it today. I agree. I agree with you. 30's hanging by a thread. Yeah, he's hanging by a thread. He was shivering so hard this morning. I'm telling you, as soon as the sun falls, - 30 is gonna fall with it. - Yeah, by the grace of God, if he makes it today, he's gone tomorrow. Now, 6, 6 is strong. 6 is super strong. I've been messing with his hair, because he constantly wants to make sure his hair looks good. Totally serious. He totally wants to make sure his hair looks good, so I mess with 6's hair every opportunity I get. 6 is also the one that has a samurai tattoo. - Oh, okay. - Yeah, and was talking about reading a book about the way of the warrior. - Hey, which one of the twins-- - 8. - is the weaker one? - 8 is the weak one. Is it over? It's not over, this day? - Not even. - No? Today? You think it's over today? Not over? Whoa, you have vastly underestimated, I think, what you've gotten yourself into. There's not a chance in hell. I think we're gonna keep rolling. We're at least five people down today, guys. So, you know, as your class leader, I want y'all to know that I'm proud of y'all for what we've done so far. We've got a long way to go, but, uh, we're still here. We're still here. Face the wall. Put your hands on the wall. ( music playing ) ( sighs ) What's your name, number 12? Ryan Kent. - Capone: From? - Yorktown, Virginia. Why are you here, Ryan? I mean, honestly... all I really know is pushing myself to the limits. You know, my dad was a marathon runner, and he got me into doing things like that when I was just four years old. So ever since then that's all I've ever tried to do, is just try to find my limits. You know, I've always been pretty good at everything I've ever done physically, and this challenge just appealed to me because it was finally a chance to potentially fail at something. So, uh... Great speech. Tell us about your dad. He's-- he's just-- he's just the reason I am who I am. He just had a huge influence on me. You know, he-- he was-- you know, a world champion arm wrestler. He was a body builder, so I've always kind of just, in a way, been in his footsteps. A lot of the success that I've had, he's played a big part in that. - You got a mom? - I do have a mom. Does your dad know you're here? Yeah. What's he think about that? I don't think he understands the-- the-- the task that just lies ahead, you know? He just thinks that I'm gonna get in here, and... crush it, like I do everything else. But I-- it's not gonna be easy. And I don't want it to be easy. It's not gonna be easy. This is day one. - You understand that? - Yes, instructor. ( music playing ) There you go, run into each other. You guys are getting tired. Here's the deal, guys. If you're thinking about it now, call it a night, turn in your patch, save yourself-- and this isn't for everybody. I knowho's looking at me like "Yeah, go ( bleep ) yourself." That's cool, and I appreciate it, but if you're thinking about it, day one, it's just not gonna happen. - Come on, work. - Step. Listen to me, if there's uneven terrain, I'm gonna point it out. What are you doing? You're going the wrong damn way! Are you insane? Pole crew one, prepare to chest carry. - Chest carry. - All: Chest carry. Instructor: Let's go! Swivel and go! You don't need to comment when you're doing this, shut up! Right, right. Instructor: You don't need to do it with this. You only need to do what's on your shoulders. You're not gonna hear me, you idiots. - Right, right. - Keep talking. Right, right, right, right, right. Grey: I learned a lesson from my injury, and that is, it is amazing, truly amazing how much abuse the human body can take. Instructor: Right shoulder! That pole crew up there! Chest carry! Grey: Everything ultimately comes down to motivation, and to a person that says, you know, "Oh, I literally can't do one more." I think you really have to think about that. Whatever level that you think you can push yourself to, you can go more. Everyone from the Special Operations community is constantly searching for that end-all, be-all of self-destruction. What level of destruction can I take myself to that I can't rebuild from? And it-- I don't think it exists. ( music playing - Watch your footing. - Watch, watch, watch. Watch your footing. Slow down. ( music playing ) - Slow, guys. - Stay in formation. Whoo! What's goin' on? Instructor: Can everybody read the two topics that are on the board for your essay? You guys are now gonna take the time to write an essay. and be thorough. Don't write some bull( bleep ), two paragraphs down. Think about this and actually answer the questions. Topic number one: what family member inspired you the most and why? Number two, some very stupid decision that you've made, in one to two sentences, and don't write "signing up for this event." Woman: We start with one? Start with number one? You got a question for the whole class, 23? 23: ( clears throat ) I just wanted to make sure that we were starting with number one, instructor. Instructor: Do you understand what the concept - of the number one means? - 23: Yes. Instructor: Like, are numbers-- you're good with the whole number, numerical system? Start writing now. Instructor: Nobody goes to sleep. Kuntz: I dare somebody to fall asleep. ( music playing ) Man: Well, Dad was an ordained minister for 35 years, so I grew up in church, whether I liked it or not. ( music playing ) Woman: Our parents left their country to give their kids a better life, so they left everything that they know. They left their family, their friends, their language. Man #2: My grandfather Richard, he served in World War II as a P-51 fighter pilot. He is humble, brave, hardworking, Man #3: When I was still a kid, my mom would always tell me, "No matter how hard things are in life, just do your best to be the best that you can ever be." Man #4: Me and my mom walked from Guatemala to California. Slept in caves, hiked through mountains, hiked through deserts. ( music playing ) Woman #2 My nine-year-old is very competitive, and he made me learn that life's not just about me, love other people more than myself... Man #5: ...at a very young age, and for that I am grateful. My dad has sacrificed his own life, so that his kids can live out their dreams. Man #6: I am the son he never had, and he is the dad I never had. I try to speak to him every day, and I visit him in Northern California every year... ( music playing ) Stand up, 30. Stay awake. ( music playing ) Go, keep running. ( music playing ) Nobody walk. Come on, guys, we're almost there. - Stay with your buddy. - Short quick steps. Grey: The people or person at the end of this, whatever their motivation is, it is gonna be deep. It's gonna be so deep it's gonna have roots throughout their entire body, but more importantly, it'll have roots in the deepest part of their mind. Care: We're taking people from a dead stop, and we're redlining them. Boom! Instructor: Lock your arms! Capone: During selection, we're trying to make it as, you know, miserable as we can, and as close as we can to the real thing. Instructor: Whoo! Capone: So they're always gonna be wet, they're always gonna be cold. I'm trying to save you a lot of pain. Capone: They're always gonna be sandy. Care: We're not here trying to hurt individuals, but if I don't see somebody puking or dropping unconscious, well, I'm not doing my job. ( all exclaiming ) We make you cold so you learn how to be uncomfortable. And if you can't be uncomfortable, you quit.
