13:20 I don't care if you're Recon, MARSOC, or a Delta SEAL Ranger. If you're a Marine, it will always shine through no matter how much fancy training you have.

in front of us if you go right behind that s where he is [Music] you Oh [Music] drop this someone why [Music] [Applause] [Applause] I mean I got [Music] [Music] mama I understand but I look over wha [Applause] [Applause] you shame doesn't matter does it matter you can show me that for he said [Music] crochet right above I think that's it I think that's a tributary to it though I think murdered small when it goes down now I you're new they wouldn't come back soon like yeah [Music] all right so pretty much every day that we went out on patrol we had to go take the ground inch by inch you know continually punch Anatomy the mouth as much as we could come back refit next day minutes go out and after a lot of blood sweat tears we were able to penetrate that defense break out of that and have some freedom movement throughout the upper singing valley we're able to go as opposed to when we first got here within the first 150 to 300 meters outside of the base we be in heavy contact with you know up to squad reinforce of the platoon size enemy at times now we're able to you know go click out sometimes completely on harassed lately you know we've got to balance the missions sometimes I'll have my guys go out just do you know where some of my fields are we'll do an ID reduction type mission sometimes in the sea regard the frown side areas will do more point type missions focusing on the people over there it's a little bit more of a permissive area but sometimes we do these long-range missions deep into the green zone do some patrol base ops and we usually find some pretty good weapons caches getting some pretty good fights and take a toll on that to take it all on enemy and demonstrate to the local populace more than anything that that the Marines can go where they want to go we'll stay where we want to stay and that the enemy doesn't dictate that to us as opposed to when we first got here that enemy dictated a lot more of our actions but uh but but these days you know it's it's we pretty much crushed that and when you move out freely absolutely in itial II you know the the Taliban had their own rules of court that they were following and you know they wanted this minimal amount of damage to the populace just like we want to minimize damage to the populace and I think that their eight they were able to do that at the beginning because you know it was kind of a pretty equal fight out here initially that they had the upper hand due to do the fact that they had these defenses established but now that was kind of broke down those defenses and and literally killed probably a few hundred Taliban at this point I think that they had to go to the plan B now and you know desperate times call for desperate measures I think there we stash there so many times that they've got to take another course of action now because the people can see that you know the Marines do what they want at this point and and that that type of show of force you know is it's probably turning the people more it's more appealing now to the people to side with coalition forces so the Taliban pretty much I think out of desperation is now turning more towards a murder intimidation campaign lots of threats every - everywhere I go these days people are when I talk to you know the locals there's talking about how you know we want to come to the post we want to come to your medical initiatives everything but Taliban says you know we're going to kill you tell that puts IEDs in around my house I want to come talk to you guys i they do it all at night but they see me talking to each other and killing me so it's it does seem that these these murder - mission commands have ramped up and I would say that well it's unfortunate for the local populace it does demonstrate that the the Marines uh have any other I've seen Marines when we've been trapped we were you shaped ambush and there were there was not lady fire down the canal we were in machine-gun firing positions on each side and literally every every square inch of where we were was getting raked by enemy PKM fire but it didn't didn't even faze these guys you know they just jumped right out of the safety of their own cover under an uncleared pass returned fire suppress the enemy you know you basically the other engineers myself go out in front of all the squads you know keep on from stepping on IEDs and losing legs in one and today we got lucky went out the alleyway found some loose turd dug it up and found a pressure plate stuff kept from one of the guys stepping on it well uh the reason I chose this job is you know it kind of gives me a rush and I guess that's what a lot of the engineers are in it for but I mean it feels it's there's nothing like it when you find it and uh you know you get to dig it up and you know they like other guys are safe you don't have to get them rushed home and have to tell their families that their legs got blown off or anything so it's it's a really nice feeling you know it's it's a really good feeling you know I find it one of those got an alleyway especially when we're out doing a mission keeping one of the guys from getting blown up or anything you know just makes that way their families don't have to get one little Red Cross notes and I got like legs blown off or something like that you [Music] now we Northwest [Applause] try to get over there either on this one or that one so I could get Roche right above I think that's I think that's a tributary to it though I think it small when it goes down now I you come on get the [Music] yeah you [Music] the purposes patrol bases so we can disrupt and interdict any Taliban or insurgency that is moving south down to the district center so that we can establish a good government in this area atmospherics in the area are very negative the people don't really stay stay around in the morning they'll leave in the evening they'll come back and then alter the day it's just us in the Taliban up here fighting so that atmospherics aren't where we like them we'd like to get them a little bit higher where people would actually like this thing in the area of rain outlet they don't the routine for aquatune at this time is a reaction we use bounding overwatch everywhere due to the engagements that we have here support by fires lots of support by fires while we maneuver to another support by fire which allow them to displace and maneuver behind us we utilize mortars a lot of htdp overwhelming fire superiority wall charges to make entering the compounds to allow us so we want to walk through danger areas and such that's normal for us to to maneuver around this area the fighting in the area is getting better before we couldn't come up here without getting engaged by a lot a lot of individuals 15 20 guys would be engaging from several different locations they try to get you in a u-shape a shape ambushes but recently due to the we've been taking the ground faster and faster they've had less time to set up so we're getting engaged by three four guys at a time and they only shoot a couple bursts and then they they leave because they know kill our mission is a disrupt not to allow the enemy to maneuver as much as they would like they want to move maneuver around us set an ie D belts they want to attack our mission when we patrol out of here is to disrupt that catch them in the act of Lin an idea catch them before they can shoot at us shoot them kill them before they can come kill us up here there's the three block word or the three stages clear vulnerability down in the southern portions are starting to move into the build phase up here we're still clear so that's our mission up here we're clearing this area [Music] this every waters yep little bit of Ranger file we're gonna set it for pot fire positions along these buildings by couple would all stick he'll be pushing along the building's over here clearing out these buildings and that's the basically just the plan it should be a short patrol but uh no anybody knows what happens out here we're probably gonna take contact we take contact is gonna come a little longer and we're going to have good support by fire set in so we're going to suppress the enemy and that's about the gist of uh Patrol we're going to push back to the PD Horvath well this caliber with you guys W yeah and I'm gonna go up here and I'm gonna try to find a way on this race we get a rifleman on this roof to cover out back here all right door shuts you've been getting me [ __ ] Mendez a little being have them cover the door and tour southeast five of you and I got this door I mean y'all take turns covering this door we got post over here all right there's you really see some of the compounds that's on the tree lines of that Alton there's another place what is good is it going get that fire this I'm kind of heard of birds dude maybe not confirmed Ronnie's in Jordan three six and friendlies in the tree line between 3 6 and 3 7 all right we're good as soon as targets spun up with all can maneuver you guys need to be prepared suppress for them and then we're going to fire hard at the name you're good on roof to keep it on the group let's go around the group grim I need you on that roof is on the car I mean for you three that's an apron you Hey [Music] right right back at the wall because you can't step in right here put this gone today go okay I thought all the room that is it is missing taste Patrol was to locate an established new patrol base to us operator inaudible we moved the troll base to kind of changed up a bit because the pig teeth which obeys in one central location at all times besides of minion patrol base then it allows the enemy to establish firing positions and see our average of our avenues that we travel to in place II's and that kind of thing so by moving the patrol base and kind of changed it up and kind of throws a curveball towards that the reason why we did that is because since we've been operating so far up north we've kind of been neglecting the western portion of where I have enough pieces that we've already cleared and our establish and regulation people trying to find teachers to to work at schools and those kind of things what we did was get patrol base further south to allow us to easier interact with those people and also it's just to the just to kind of the west of our patrol base along a true line where we know there's a enemy activity trying to emplace IEDs by keeping a presence in this general area it'll hender the idea to actually place these IDs on us so keeping a safe and looking safe the same time to get really really low we get back fine woman but you ride the 7-eleven and you see that guy in the back tree line yeah I thought those a new guy that just walked up yeah he's always to the left you just like got down yeah hey you walking in that tree line right now um right now we're clearing cluster and popping on Yankee for Taliban gear things of that nature and so far nothing found you [Applause] cease fire spicy spicy about under 50 years away and white-collar wolf we got the mange in the direction of this mental it's going on over three black with you so two priests in it yeah we achieve that around the back by us as we're exiting uh-oh with your position you guys'll be had our brief eyes on the shooter he is directly north of cola wall I just north of defense 56 really I play play sister don't die from lack on we're gonna be moving out that direction I all your fires waiting towards the Dority all right hey if we take fire from there like that could place up dakota trees nor neither growing the south side of coal all right yes good yeah we're good big close-up freezes at school anymore [Music] [Music] yeah [Music] what are you about the five more minutes for Alfa to push up to a meklin brave oh that is all Icom traffic's coming from saying they're waiting for us ran into PD so they can start shooting ass probably going to push it off is going to push to 90 to 93 and they're going to hold their once they get set in we are going to start moving from 7-6 we're going to unmask start pushing down along the Mississippi down south stay into the DEF blade push out the backside of it back up in compound where we've done down that guy come down south these eyes start opening up on us I'm just going to start as that's happening it's going to look like what one side of PP I'm not going to go into BB my son you can just open feel the back side see if we get any ones trying to egress Alps is going to block them off I'm going to push towards the tree line away it was my eval used to be see if we get any way pushed on that one that direction we can catch me out so I start taking fire by then I'll give signal we communicate with alpha try to get a blimp on top of that and that's what's gonna happen take is there foot this more ready where do you want me to shoot on a hilltop overlooking the Green Zone and saying in Afghanistan a surveillance target acquisition also known as stay moves into position to scan a known hotspot for Taliban activity right over there you see the open the open between the treeline that's what they usually have media moved from that area down south you watchful of that area down there their targets are two men who were spotted shooting at Marines the day before basically we're watching this hot spot we've gotten a lot of reporting from historical firing points so we want to go take a you know gander at the area she was going on about two two and a half hours we spotted both the individuals one was heading south one was heading west I didn't have observation on the southern am yep so I kept my focus to the north he came out once disappeared into a compound came out again went into the corn okay I feel came back down a trail I was looking up kind of turkey peeking started walking back towards the corn and that's when I engaged him he went down the first shot statistics show that about every Taliban sniper takes down saves about three Marines lives so that's really at the end of the day that's what our job is all about it's saving Marines lives and it's something I take very seriously I walk away really fast Marines with 1st battalion 6th Marine Regiment take over an abandoned compound in the kinetic village potay Sangin district Afghanistan batteries upon their arrival they are greeted with an attack by the Taliban coming out we kind of knew that uh we weren't welcome in the area the tech cracked off about seven o'clock they start to break down on us we had contact from the west northwest we headed to the southeast and then a little bit coming directly south from my home and by the way I think they're trying to test the water see what was going on feel us out a little bit we responded well mortars had eyes on a guy in a compound we knew the compound was abandoned as soon as he got in there and then two more fighters filled that compound we had direct line of sight to the compound and knowing that no one else was going to get hurt in the area we cleared a sixty tot they dropped two rounds on that building [Music] Maurice ponder great they've been responding immediately which that's all I can ask for with a quick reaction by the Marines and spot on mortar fire the attack was successfully repelled right yeah and media data the Manta pasta whoa here sheet so we would yo but letter yo muscle man tamatera super super severe that a monogamous and demonic man after ooh coming here to take over this contacts on a TV show this we need to able to unlock the shop hey nobody non rays are going to touch any is yeah we're not going to take anything though there are he's a light holy [ __ ] shine your light down on theirs is you got tarnish old clothes ever awesome was it for what's down there nothing normal-sized room he's on the ground he might care for Charlie about a fight that stamped of children that the only thing you use destroy them before [Music] Johan today's artists a barista Hatake Steve that wasn't a burrito Pacha pushing I need one was it still there was he has the two small sons like him one is e 1 is other one one traditional stop a little sorrow what and where the Marines are actually live across the street we're gonna be here working with the AAA and the people women of es correcto single wahala ones the one stamens are important they will you do for illuminating and that I'm one of the commander's that live over there how they opened and a they rigged a estar war sarasvati the visual visa yeah yeah it does anything which were targeting the realize how to keep hey so much go in there 30 minutes ago Taliban came by set up the roadblock so it's four guys on two motorcycles right when you hit that spot you got a tree line that comes like this and a cave the building it's murder hold you got a cave straight ahead in a tree line this text will change of Ambler yep I'll engage with them in Canada last year do hottie muscular one is Tom Feeney was let us see she was Melissa nice without mr. picker suey oh this is nothing I could do the part of infinitum cept each yeah not you like that hey Eliza gonna throw up oh don't worry about my age doc fixed his eye Daphne would you Oh plant we talk me in a box beginning right order remove it w you talk to these guys see if they know anything about the people who live in this building right here okay you see you talking about yeah and then ask them if they know anything about mines or IEDs in this tree line to the right of that building okay as we look at it you understand yeah hi hopefully build a reputation build a relationship with you guys and we would like to know if anyone from the area is not supposed to be is anyone from outside the area hanging around here that you don't know that we should know about stationary tells us some locals and we start moving on still in the southeast II second right now we're static talking some locals actually keep pushing inside the wizard let's call dinner watch my step both chuckle I need no fun awesome we're not gonna be over here 24 hours no let's get up you see ten years ago before you get partial retire just gonna follow behind their big man fall behind their face and then we're just instead of security will include the tree line hey coach we got me a brown now listen in them all those sharper yeah so we cross over here more okay closer to those those Robo building alright let's at least get you guys in the field right in the fields I want to go any further right all right now oh no not another car not a permits that's unconscious Crona I've seen you put that dog out there like 150 to 200 meters anybody a get some food hey take a look at the tree line good bra we can shoot a 203 in that door I only got Suite 203 Sui screen that [ __ ] door [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] you I'm corporal Kevin ice machine-gun squad leader alpha company's mission here in Sangin is to secure route 611 so that they can transfer a turbine up to a Kajaki dam to provide power for all of Helmand province so we're just running patrols out getting making acquaintance with the locals stab establishing a base of friendship letting them know that we're not here to hurt them that we're here to provide them with security also we're working with the Afghan National Army developing a friendship with them getting familiar with them working and making friends so that we can all work together to accomplish the one mission the terrain differs it's a lot especially in the brown zone it's it's a lot of you know mountains and stuff but in the Green Zone you know you got cornfields ditches canals it all depends on what area you're in the corn should be coming down soon so it's going to be a lot of open openness but it's a lot of trees a lot of you know farmers working constantly so sometimes sometimes it's a pain you know you know you got the water the waters here the canals are not too deep most of them but when they irrigate their fields and stuff like that it's really muddy so it makes it harder to maneuver the corn is a kind of pain too sometimes we can also use that to our advantage for a cover and concealment so kinetics with the Taliban so far I've been in one firefight haven't all the locals here say that the Taliban doesn't really bother them much but uh so far you know we you know we've only been here for about a week I haven't really seen too much hopefully that stays that way you know but uh we'll see as right now all I know is that we're here at PB Georgia and our mission is to you know make sure like I said that we secure our AO and the route of 611 other than that I couldn't really tell you what the future holds for Alpha Company but I do know that while we're here we are going to do our best to make this place not only safer for the locals but you know better style living as well so I was actually a one-fives mold unit we ripped with a black foot which is Bravo one five partially the reason why I came out here to 3/7 kilo was just that simple fact that I shared a bit of history one five and they're they're very helpful they're squad leaders not very knowledgeable star marlowe star Nelson coping bullet all you know very knowledgeable beans past a lot of the knowledge on a lot of the key points and key terrain in the area just how to maneuver and things that you know we already know but just to kind of refine them make them a little bit easier know so that we're not roughing up guys and doing things it up you know that you've heard of other units doing the kids you know there are real big sign and and you know what we do and you see the kids out there and they're happy with you and they're you know they're tugging on you and asking you how you're doing ask me for chocolate pens you know you're doing good because they keep coming up to you and then always give you high fives and things like that so well five toss that you know that it's not like when three seven was your last time where it's you know constant threat and we're in Sangin singing Afghanistan right by the river I mean there's not really a much you know using that military jargon or grids and things like that but yeah we're uh we're right by the Helmand River second tune is we rotate out of this this little piddy year it's a lot of farmers just a lot of farmers out here you know nomads are rolling in coming from the mountains and a lot of new faces but other that it seems to be a very friendly area I think it's when we don't see that that's what emotion you know definitely raise the eyebrow through this deployment we hope to accomplish just maintaining that security in the area you know not really nothing not backing down or stepping back from anything you know keeping keeping that presence with the locals you know we've made a lot of a lot of friendships out here a lot of a lot of relationships with the elders Mulas shop owners even some of the younger males yeah we've actually you know gained some of a trust with them to where we can you know Kalyn them to you know to help us out we're out they want point out one point out any kind of danger area or something that might be yeah it might be a threat to coalition forces but that along with being able to hand over this whole you know this battle space today a allowing them to further their operations and keep it secure so that what we do so the locals will see you know US forces just backing out they see it's a joint operation or kind of trading and hitting over back to them and they see that it's now it's you know it's in their hands and they can trust AAA and cop so that's that's mainly what we hope to accomplish and so far we haven't had too many problems we've been doing a pretty good job you know with the help of our our interpreters in the NA our ett teams they've been livin help us out making sure that we had that relationship established I think it's been going pretty pretty well we've had tremendous success I would say with the turnout the local shuras starting with our during our rip with 1-5 increased within that the next seven day days of the first sure that I did with the platoon commander from 1-5 into the the next one that we had when we'd actually post-transfer Authority we had about 35 to 40 locals representing each of the five five villages in our AO so they seem to be pretty happy with the work that one five that had done prior to us getting here I think it was a pretty smooth transition from our and taking over for them for theirs and then the locals seem to be pretty satisfied with security we've been providing and they in situ be content in terms of reaching out to us letting us know when they're doing certain things there feels to let us know that they're not they're not Taliban and just kind of doing everything that we've asked them to do to mitigate any issues that we would have you know not looking at them as is Taliban but recognize them as the local people who should be here versus Taliban's and kind of infiltrating victim our CIO overall Arcana mission is is to provide security from locals right now to prevent Taliban from coming in and establishing this establishing a base to operate from one Bob did a really good job taking over for thirty five which took over for thirty seven last year after they cleared pretty much the most of the same Valley and at this point we just kind of want to continue on those gains in terms of keeping AO clear of Taliban influence making sure that the local people are protected making sure that they feel secure they're looking you on with their their daily lives whether it's farming or teaching their kids are wanting to establish more of an infrastructure in the in the area such as you know building roads getting schools up and running and getting River crossings and things like that allows them to facilitate their way of life you know a more efficient way more productive way and ultimately us partnering with our patrols with the local AAA to eventually turn over to them so when when US forces pull out of Afghanistan ultimately the goal is to for the the Afghan to be able to protect themselves and continue on the job that we've we've kind of helping them to do now it's I think it's been relatively quiet which i think is a success I think it's a tremendous I think highly of the work that hit three five and one five one five did prior to us getting here you know you Cana in my mind it's kind of what you want to see Bao has been pretty quiet in terms of we haven't had any small arms fire dredge fire incidents with any enemy or any insurgents I think that could change any day I like to think that we're prepared to handle it you know at any point along any patroller goes out any time of the day that said it's not something where we're hoping for hopefully that you know we're doing a good enough job by providing security that the Taliban doesn't want to come back the locals feel secure and us being here and they would work you know effectively providing security this to the whole area [Music] not that we've got a great group of young young guys here to do the job here at acid you okay you know I'm proud of the work that we've done so far it's only been a month we've got another five have six to go but at this point in employment you know we managed to stay safe and I think continuing to provide security the locals in this village especially the reaction that we've had from them which has just been nothing but but positive reinforcement of the work that we're doing the fact that they feel they can come to us at any point and talk to us here at our at our Opie and show us around the AO lead us through their fields without worrying about the threat of IEDs every step they take I think is it speaks volumes about the relationship that we established and hopefully will continue to maintain throughout the rest of the deployment you [Music] [Applause] get out there you captain Anthony verily I am the competent commander for the grandparents company I'm a part of Company C third Combat Engineer Battalion what we did was rough route 611 had been traveling in quite some time all the way up here to the Jackie dam so my platoon here was tasked we have clearing the route essentially from down down from the sagging area all the way up to keep Jack dam in order to open up the lines of communication in the area and it's allow government infrastructure of Afghanistan to take root an area that does not seen colas forth presence so on the 14th October elements of Task Force 1 6 which is pleasure a task force that consisted of infantry at about 400 engineers as well and they essentially started on the 14th all the way down at the Alcatraz is going to sang and we just recently got up here to Kentucky it's not done we still have a lot of work to do in order to ensure that critical line of communication of you dam remains open we did have some an enemy contact did receive some OEE activity we found an IE d we struck an IE d we had some small arms fire along the route up but like anything else if you have a strong security posture and Marines doing the right thing and everybody comes home safely man that's essentially what occurred over the past couple days no the Marines company Caesar CP did a fantastic job out here we have Co these elements of COP six out there doing PV built to make sure that we had observation all the way along the route that quite frankly pretty pretty dangerous so the Marines are doing fantastic things keep each other safe and working partnering very closely with the AMA and the AUD the Afghani forces in order to make sure that this area remains you you see reality is yeah right on the other coleg right on the other side like you bought it with the rock okay but like a meter in there's one there and you see that big tree that we kind of went around to this I had to look at it here count it back stock I can't tell if it's on this side on the back side of the tree but there's definitely one there as well will exploit this tomorrow that it not exactly you [Music] but [Applause] those pretty rad I'm sorry cycling sorry Lugo and we are a male Engagement Team the acronym FET has been introduced and used with more frequency as we continue to help the people of Afghanistan you might have heard it or read it but what does that stand for and what does it really mean fit stands for Female Engagement Team a FET is a program that we come out here to engage the female population gather atmospherics on their village find out a little bit more about what's going on in build relationships the ladies can define fit because for the past seven months they've been living it sorry Lu gong solar cycle II have been great working with I love going on they love interacting the people using the Female Engagement Team has been a good experience there's my second point working with the FET and I think it's a great asset to have as a small unit leader it helps us gain access into compounds and villages easier than if we didn't have it however being part of Phet is more than just a day-to-day mission it's something to be proud of I believe it's history I believe I'm making a change where there is you know for the females in the military for the women of Afghanistan Female Engagement Team is a experience that you'll never forget when we come into the compound you know the women are usually kind of off in the corner since they're not allowed to speak to any of the men and we get to talk to them and it's nice to be able to give them a voice too I've utilized it the ladies say their success wouldn't be possible without the support of their command and the Marines of 3:7 Marine corporal blue Cisneros singham province Afghanistan [Music] [Music]
