good morning everybody some days it is just too hot or in this case too rainy to go outside and do some of the other things that you would do outside in the summer so today i am doing another free fun thing in the summer which is raiding my mom's pantry and making some biscuits on the door of this cabinet is my biscuit recipe that has been up there for a long time because i've made these biscuits a lot of times and i like doing it but today i'm going to get in this pantry and rate it and use whatever i need to to make biscuits for breakfast first thing we need to do is actually preheat the oven so i just remembered that we actually need to do that two it says 425 there we go now we're ready to start gathering supplies [Music] now that i've got everything i need i'm ready to make some biscuits i will put my recipe in the description box below because it's a really good recipe i've made it a lot of times and it's it's pretty easy considering you're making biscuits from scratch so i'm going to put that in the description below if you want to try it out let's make some biscuits so what we're going to start with is just flour that's pretty much the base of these biscuits so i've got a 1 cup measuring cup and i'm going to have 2 cups of flour now my family has five people in it so these biscuits make at least usually they make eight biscuits seven or eight something like that and they feed my family pretty well without any issues so that's why we really like these biscuits too is they don't make like a million but they make enough to feed everybody so the next thing let's see i'm looking at my recipe is baking powder we have three teaspoons of baking powder [Music] baking powder is very important because if you don't use baking powder they will not rise and they'll turn out like pancakes i have done that before there we go i need just a little more because that last one was not very full okay we have our baking powder in next thing is sugar a lot of just a little bit of sugar though there's not very much sugar in these there's out of this whole container sugar we need one teaspoon it was always funny to me that they put sugar in this recipe because i always wondered if the biscuits would taste any different if we just didn't put any sugar in because there's like barely any sugar and then i may have to start clearing this off in a second but let's see then we have salt iodized salt oh the salt is actually not opened now that the salts opened we will add it into the mix too just one teaspoon though there's not very much salt either and okay now i'm going to put all this stuff back behind me because there's no reason to have a cluttered table i've got to get a couple of spoons to put the shortening into the measuring cup because shortening is sticky it's kind of like dealing with peanut butter almost it's so sticky so we have two spoons we're gonna fight this shortening we have to have half a cup of shortening so this part it's not the messiest part but it might be the most difficult part because it's really just sticky and you have to get it measured out pretty correctly the thing with baking is that if you mess up a measurement at least by a lot like it doesn't have to be exact but if you mess up a measurement on a lot of things it won't turn out right you wonder huh why did that not turn out right and it's probably because you did something wrong okay let's add to the bowl with my other spoon see it's so sticky very sticky but it's going in you will come in [Music] [Music] all right we're going to call that good it's pretty good we got most of it and then we're going to use this handy-dandy pastry knife and cut it all up and just mix it in there and while i'm cutting all this up everything else that we added in gets mixed in too because i mean it's just one big mixing it's like sawing on sticky stuff it's funny we're gonna just make sure that all of the chunks of the shortening are mixed up in there that's kind of the goal is to get all the big chunks mixed in there so that the shortening just blends in with all the other stuff we put in there and that's our oven it's hot all right that's pretty good and next comes the fun part now it's time to add the last ingredient which is milk but before we move on i just want to say that i will add this recipe like i said in the description below because as i am talking i am not being very exact with my measurements at all i'm not being very verbal with them so if y'all are having a hard time following along just go look at the description but i do have a little secret tip for this milk part so when my family was learning how to make these biscuits i don't know several years ago we always added exactly what the recipe said which is 3 4 cup of milk so this is half a cup because we don't actually have a 3 4 cup so we do half a cup and then we do a fourth of a cup and add it together that makes 3 4 cup but the secret is to add a little bit more than 3 4 cup because it makes it stickier and when they're done it'll make them softer but you can't like i don't i don't have an exact measurement i just add just a little more milk but it's like somewhere in between three-fourths and one cup of milk so it's kind of weird but that is my little secret tip they always seem to turn out better that way now this is the fun part i was talking about which i have to take my watch out for but i'm about to get in here and mix them with my hands because that's the most effective way to do it and it's kind of awesome so i'm gonna just mix this until it turns into a dough and basically by the end it can't be like too sticky not so sticky that you can't handle it like they usually turn out better in my opinion when they're sticky but if they're so sticky that you just can't even do anything with them then they're too sticky i got it all mixed into a nice ball here see it's a nice ball of dough it's it's not really sticky this isn't it shouldn't be that sticky it shouldn't be so sticky that it sticks to your hands too much but now i've got to go clean off my hands because they are covered in dough and then we'll get these things rolled out and onto the pan the last thing we've got to do is turn this ball of dough into a bunch of biscuits i have my flour because you need to flour the pan or at least i do maybe you don't have to but it's a good idea to flour the pan so that it doesn't stick to it well this is the cutting board it's not like the pan they're gonna be cooked on or anything but it's the cutting board that i'm cutting them out on okay it's not real hard just give it some flour then i'll take my ball of dough right here that we've been working this whole time to make and there it is and i just start patting it out until it gets i don't really know how thick it's kind of hard to tell you just have to eyeball it and it doesn't really matter how thick or thin it is unless it's just like crazy thick or crazy thin you just have to make sure that it's cooked all the way through all right i'm gonna call that pretty good now the way i cut it out you see guys this is really really fancy okay but the way i cut it out [Music] is with a cup because we don't have like a proper cutting thing so i don't know we've always used this cup this same cup so i put some flour on the cup so it doesn't stick to the cup too bad hopefully and press it down cut it out boom there's your first biscuit and so let's see what i would do my pan is over here but what i will do is put it on the pan as soon as i spray the pan with some spray so that it doesn't stick to the pan [Music] boom all this not sticking stuff is very important you have to remember it because if it sticks then it's going to just turn into a mess so now we'll take our cup again cut out another biscuit boom biscuit number two this is gonna be the last one that we get the last cut out i may have rolled that out a little bit thick it seems like i did so there we go there's our last our last cutout biscuit but then what i do with the rest of this dough is i just make a little something there's not enough of it to cut it out so it's not going to be real beautiful but i just kind of use my thumbs and pat it out so that we can have another biscuit kind of like maybe like that i would say and it's kind of close to the size of all the other biscuits and boom so that is [Music] biscuits that that one made sometimes it makes seven sometimes it makes eight sometimes it makes nine you just don't really know it's kind of weird and i don't really know why it makes different every time probably because of how you cut them out but now it's time to put them in the oven the oven's at 4 25 and we said it before we started so it is hot you all heard it beef while ago there we go and i'm going to leave them in there for about 15 minutes and then it's time to eat now it's time to get them out of the oven let's see how easy this is gonna be [Music] there they are see that they're so pretty now we're going to put them over here on the counter on these little things because it just protects the counter from heat i'm not really sure what it would do to the counter but apparently it would do something and turn the oven off these are going to be really good the recipe again is in the description below i hope you all enjoyed today's video have a great day
