hey casey ferris here i make videos on davinci resolve here on youtube and today we're doing some advanced fusion stuff all you all you nerds should be so happy and because there is so much to do i'm not going to do it all live but i am going to walk through every step so that you can definitely do this yourself let's check out what we're going to be making she's walking along walk along la la woo and then she blew she done got sucked up by a portal it's true so this is a cool little disappear effect great for time travel or i don't know any other reason you would disappear i don't know the reasons it's cool let's look at how to do it so here in the fusion page i'm going to isolate each node put it in one of these viewers to show you what i'm doing first thing we're doing is obviously starting with this footage of the lady walking on the beach and anytime that you make somebody disappear sounds so evil anytime you make somebody disappear you know we're going to make them disappear anytime you literally have somebody disappear in a video goodness no one's sleeping with the fishes here there's no mob action anytime that you have someone disappear in a video you need to make a clean plate that is a version of the video without them there because guess what that's that's really important if they're not going to be there at the end of the video so this is super easy if it's locked down especially if you thought about this beforehand and you shot the empty shot before or after the subject was in there but we didn't so we're gonna have to do some trickiness here we not only did not shoot a clean plate but shot it handheld which is just the worst here's what i did first of all i made a copy of our original media this is this is our normal footage and put it through a time stretcher the time stretcher is just making a freeze frame so over here in the inspector i'm just telling it to only play frame 67 or just freezing that frame and then what i did was just mask out this section right here which is where she's going to disappear with a little mask look like this that's just a polygon mask and we connect that to our original footage so now if we open up the time stretcher we have just a still image of this blank part of the beach i'll take some of this out to show you then this goes through a planar transform and a planar transform is a way to move something around using tracking information from a planar tracker so i selected an area similar to this and tracked the motion with the planar tracker so let's do that real quick i'll hit shift spacebar and type plan ar planar tracker and you just pipe the original footage into the planar tracker bring that up here and then i selected something like meh to track it here in the inspector whatever frame i started on i hit set and then track and track that forward a few frames went back to the middle and tracked it backward and now we have a pretty decent planar track after you do that you just hit this little button create planar transform and this is what you get so now we have the masked still frame that doesn't show the lady at all kind of pasted over that part of the shot so now she kind of walks behind that mask but we don't want her to just walk through it like an invisible wall we just want her to disappear all of a sudden so over here at about frame 127 or so i just animated the blend of that merge so it's 100 on at frame 127 and at frame 126 we're gonna have it off so really we're just waiting for her to walk all the way behind that mask and then we're turning the mask on boom and she goes away there are a couple problems so far one of them is that it doesn't quite cover her shadow there and we can't mask this more because you see her feet in the original footage and now we can clone out the shadow with this paint node i'll select the paint node but make sure my merge one that the paint and everything goes into is in viewer two then in the paint node in the inspector i'll click this little brush button called clone and then up here i'll select stroke then we just zoom in here and hold alt to grab a piece of the land and then just paint over it like this so now i've just got rid of her shadow which is only going to be there for a couple frames anyway and this is already tracked and so it looks just fine after the paint node we had one other problem and this probably won't happen with every single piece of footage but at least for this footage for whatever reason the sky is a little bit darker on this side and it's about right on this side of the mask and so you can kind of see the outline of this mask one thing that could help is just softening the mask but instead what i did was just color correct this still to match the background i used a color corrector and just kind of took down the gain just a touch and now that side looks great but guess what this other side isn't working now so what i did was take a rectangle mask made it really really soft and just mask this color correction so that the side that needs to be darker gets darker and the side that doesn't need to be darker stays light and now we have a pretty good match pretty good boom now we have her just disappearing so all of that is just to make it so we have this clean plate here so that she disappears for the rest of the shot but we can make this effect a little bit nicer right so next we'll take a copy of our footage our original footage and we're going to bring it over here and merge a background with it to make it glow so we have this kind of bluish purplish background it's merged over our original footage with a color dodge mode next we put all of this over our footage of the girl just kind of disappearing behind the clean plate and we'll use a couple different masks to just select a couple parts of her with this kind of bluish foreground the reason for this is just so it looks like her body doesn't all disappear all at once it kind of goes gradually so this is just here for a couple frames so she's walking and then blue pieces blue pieces gone so now it looks like this already looks pretty cool but to give this a little bit more of a kind of warp effect i added a vortex node a vortex just like twirls things and i just animated that twirl here with the inspector and just had it start twirling and then get really twirly when the blue parts come in and it's okay if it switches the background because this is kind of you know like a time warp thing and then it just gets better when she disappears so you have this little twirl effect then the last finishing touch which always makes things look nicer adding a little bit of smoke and i didn't use any real smoke just generated it from fast noise so this is just fast noise with a mask on it with a really soft mask and i'm using that same planar tracker the same tracking information just to make sure this sticks to the footage and then i'm just merging this over everything else with a screen apply mode now we just get this little puff of smoke like that and we just fade it in right before the effect and fade it out right after the effect that's just a little little puff of smoke just to make it a little bit more fancy and that's the whole effect so taking a look at the nodes we have our original media we're using that in two places one of them is for that glowing blue the other one is to make a clean plate so we make a clean plate and kind of the glow merge that over and mask it add the twirl add the smoke and there we have the effect so there you go that's how to make somebody disappear in fusion i hope you enjoyed this if you want more fusion tutorials and things about davinci resolve 17 make sure to subscribe to the channel and click on
