Deepfakes were a MUCH bigger deal a few months ago. The problem was it's centralization on fucking porn of all things. Then, the porn based subreddit was banned and the entire subject disappeared overnight.
people that couldn't put their cocks down for 7 seconds allowed those with an agenda to hide behind morality while they swooped in for the kill of a very relevant topic using the misdirection of grounds of copyright or defamation.
It's a real topic of discussion -- consumer-level tech manipulation of once a perfect archive -- that got kicked out of the spotlight just as it was gaining traction.
TBPH I give it less than a year before there's some deepfake of someone important saying and doing something newsworthy that never actually happened.
Which is the real point here. . . if I can do this on a 2nd hand laptop, just imagine what can be done, and how quickly, using government level funds using "national security" level computing.

This technology is very cool but honestly, outside of movies what purpose does it serve that isn't nefarious? I remember hearing a podcast about this and the people who created it were basically like "lol isnt this cool?" and when the host raised questions about the ethics of creating something like this the creators seemed completely taken aback. It was like they never even considered the impact something like this could have on the world.
Number of months before our current President claims that a video of something he said was manufactured this way?
Deepfakes have to distort images to work. Put it in 1080p and you will see that atleast at its current level it's nothing that can impact the modern world.
I think this is one of the best thing that could happen to the internet. This will make people don't believe anything, and research everything.
This won't make people easier to manipulate, it will make it harder.
