hey guys and girls and everyone in between brian von va here back at it again with another set of d d stories today we've got another doozy players what was the coolest thing a dm has done for your campaign like i'm looking for something that really made you go wow part one rdm played the longest con i've ever seen so in our like fourth weekly session we met an npc that ended up liking us and getting a crush on our fighter her name was cammy so cammy and our fighter spent the night together because he got his ass kicked and we warlock paladin cleric decided to try and handle a quest on our own emphasis on try we realized that this isn't happening without him so we run back and grab him from the inn leaving cammie alone for a few hours we come back everything is good we keep going and cami follows us on our journey maybe half a year later she ends up betraying us and fleeing we spend the next 6 months irl tracking her down finally finding her after wondering what exactly happened our fighter takes her aside starts to talk to her about it and then she reveals she is a doppelganger in fact we knew the real cammy for all about half a day she was killed and replaced while we were on our quest that night and the dm kept it going and dropped hints for us for a full year it was amazing and i'll never forget it husband and wife dm team switched dming duties in the middle of a game as our pcs were sucked from tomb of annihilation to curse of strod over the course of an overnight camping rest in the jungle single best awesomeness alright story time because i am still impressed by how well my dm pulled this off given the sheer number of things that could have happened and how well it went background warlock me sorcerer fighter cleric we had just rescued a city from some mind flares we are trying to make our way to another big city on the continent but it is a long ways away from where we are a spellcaster there offers us some possible solutions journey by land slow but safe journey by land and boat we would detour away but faster once on sea or teleportation fast but risky we picked teleportation he's sending us to a place he hasn't been to which makes it especially risky but we still try it someone rolls and away we go so not only did the roll throw us way off course but we are all now in the middle of the ocean separated the dm then plans out one-on-one sessions with each of us the following week now here's the amazing part each of us do not know what the others in the party are doing or what happened to them we played over discord there are also several islands way off in the distance we can go to and each of them has a little something special on them oh and let's not forget the kraken what happens next is an amazing amount of coordination from the dm and keeping a timeline of events between all four of us if i remember right out of the four of us only two of us went to the same island while the rest initially went to different ones my warlock makes it to an island rests up and chases tracks that start as an animal gets mixed up with some other tracks and then leads to multiple larger tracks the tracks lead to a cave i investigate i go down further and further and run into our fighter the fighter joins the call the end of his one-on-one ended him with down in that cave one quick escape from a dragon's lair later and we go back to the island the fighter started on thank you fly spell what we go to a village fight the village escape the village and apparently avoid a monstrous fog creature before we safely say the others are not on that island a new session and it's still just us too and after another quick recharge to use fly plus probably one of the most unique battles i've seen and my warlock was like 15 minutes into their short rest we notice on one of the islands there is a massive explosion from a fireball spell it's the sorcerer we fly over to the island and investigate good news we find the battle scene and a monster corpse but we can't find the sorcerer or cleric we rest up for the night and in the morning the fighter immediately gets ascending message it's the cleric and the message was sent when the cleric and sorcerer had their two-on-one session they are with the sorcerer the fireball from before was definitely from their battle which the dm had to keep track of when that happened and when we would see it and they went to investigate the rest of the island the fighter and i go to investigate the area the cleric mentioned in their message after a little bit of dungeon dwelling we pop into a large hallway and see some figures off in the distance on the next session the gang was all back together just trying to imagine the amount of coordination the spells the battles who was where and when still impresses me years later after it happened i have a few examples from various dms but i'll mention one dm in particular this dm records each session plays it back to himself in his free time and then summarizes each session in a story thus far section in our discord channel we just finished a level 1 to 20 campaign that lasted about three or four years and we all have it on file to look back on and read and this is just one of the things he does he puts in a ton of work and effort into his campaign setting and personalizes each session to our characters as best as he can dude is an absolute legend replaced npcs and tales from the yawning portal with npcs from each character in the party's background totally wasn't expecting it especially because it happened in adventurers league it's just added a lot more reason to care about the adventures and it made our characters feel more connected to the world for tomb of annihilation my dm made the blocks that you find for the trickster gods he made them three by three by three out of concrete then used a dremel to engrave the trickster god into the topside not their name but the actual god wasn't our dm but a fellow player he's a talented artist and whipped up some amazing artwork of our characters at the final session of our 1-20 campaign he and another player took off their jackets to reveal they made shirts of our campaign movie poster style shirts depicting the party and a handful of npcs they gave everybody in the group one and totally caught us off guard it was by far the coolest moment i've had in d and d my dm allowed me to play a really out there concept kane a half-elf divine sorcerer with life and death-themed powers in truth he is a homunculus-like creation of a mad wizard made of the remains of a powerful elven saint and a powerful human necromancer hence half elf an attempt at not just creating life through magic and alchemy but a being capable of wielding power over life and death itself now i could stop there but my dm went an unintended step further and the necromancer that makes up half my character wasn't just a powerful necromancer but was actually the first necromancer as we found out through a convenient cast of legend lore on the scythe my character wields which was said necromancers originally i wasn't expecting that kind of ham up of my character's background but holy hell am i excited to see what comes of it our party was opening a mead hall and throwing a grand opening dm through an irl party and several of the guests who weren't in the campaign were given npc roles for the night us pcs were able to interact with the npcs at a party in-game at a party irl i think there was some sort of benefit or intel from some of the npcs as well but it wasn't my primary concern of the evening though dealing in secrets had been my pc's thing blondie our fighter was also able to whip sir chadwick that night based on an irl wrestling match between the player and our dm dm did a really pretty write-up of the night of revelry for pcs that weren't able to attend the party the first dnd game that made me really interested in joining the hobby was a 3.5 game where i made a fighter not really experienced in crafting lore i gave him a title from a martial school called the seven sword style it didn't really mean anything but my gm took that scant backstory and homebrewed a fighter subclass that let me use psionics to move my swords at range allowing my character to pull his seven swords from across the battlefield to make strategic attacks he also worked seven magic swords into the campaign that did things like deliver stunning strikes like a monk or allowed me to bypass armor to hit a monster's touch ac it stuck with me how he was able to make something so interesting with a nonsensical title that i gave my character on a whim gotta brag on my dm for two different things once he made an offhand joke while we were about to leave town after some shopping that an old lady was selling a bag of potatoes that she claimed were magical our half-work barbarian with all his intelligence decides that he's got 500 gold pieces so that sounds like a deal dm asks him to roll an insight check which he fails miserably so he's like yeah man you're totally convinced these are magical potatoes the rest of us are like no way dude that's all your money clearly this old lady is crazy so we all rolled inside we all fail miserably we're all convinced they're magical potatoes so we get excited about the incredible deal we just made and the second we get back to the smaller town we had recently liberated from some cultists we planted those and they grew into a magical potato stock it's a thing look it up so at this point he stops and asks us for real do we want to climb it and see what's up there to which of course we say hell yeah and he has us take a break for a few minutes while he conjures up an entire adventure out of his ass we find a castle with giant bugs sleeping giants a ton of loot and some other stuff that ends up being super important to the campaign later on we still laugh at how fun the whole concept was the other thing he did was for a different campaign we play on a different night yay kofi boredom allowing for multiple games the majority of the group had met before i had joined them pre-covered and had a dm that was pretty crazy he ended up doing all of the players pretty dirty killing them all off in incredibly graphic ways without consulting the players beforehand meanwhile his friend noped out of the fight so he didn't get killed because he had been warned ahead of time that the monster they were fighting was super crazy strong and death saves had to be rolled out of 15 or some crazy like that i'd heard about all this before but one night one of our players was talking about it and how he no longer likes to play anything but simple characters because he had put so much thought into that character that had died so he didn't want to be emotionally attached anymore and this really easy going super chipper always laughing guy was really getting upset and i realized that he was still really hurt over what happened dm realized it too because a session or two later we get to the end of the lair we were investigating and we find a couple of people who were being held prisoner it was their characters who had been brought back to life but continuously tortured so the player had the option to switch if he wanted the player was giddy so precious to hear him overjoyed going through his character sheet and saying oh yeah when he remembered stuff that his character could do the session ended like that and i had to take a moment to blow my nose because it was just so damn sweet this was my first experience playing d d and i really lucked out finding a group of guys that are just cool and not toxic and an incredibly awesome dm we have a lot of fun and i'm glad i found them me too
