today we're talking about conversation skills so this is a five day challenge on day one we talked about pronunciation day 2 phrasal verbs day 3 grammar and today is conversation tomorrow day 5 we're going to talk about fluency and I'm always sharing practical tips with you I'm sharing things that you can do now to improve your English for free so hello hello welcome fil nice to see you wonderful I'm so happy to see so many people and I have to say because today is a special day in American culture and maybe in countries where people are Christian they celebrate Easter so happy Easter to everyone this morning I made a special breakfast with my family I made waffles so if you like waffles if you like making special breakfast then say yeah hey Happy Easter Stefan a very nice to see you thank you so much so let's get right into our English lesson for today oh and if you have not joined you definitely want to join to get some special bonuses at the end of our English fluency challenge so you can join for free at gonaturalenglish.com slash challenge you can see the link in the description so you can click on it and it takes two seconds to sign up if you have not signed up yet so today we're talking about conversation now I want to begin by actually talking about something that is really difficult because when we have conversations I know that we feel a lot of pressure to speak in the moment it's not like listening or reading a book where you have time and you're not actually interacting with people when you're in a conversation it's a social situation right so you might feel embarrassed if you make a mistake you might be thinking what will they think of me if I make a mistake I don't want people to think that I'm not smart or that I haven't studied my English I know that you study hard and I know you're smart so I want to encourage you first of all to be okay with making mistakes especially in conversation because in conversation we know that you don't have time to prepare you're not going to write out your answer okay wait wait wait let me just make sure I have this all correct before I speak you know you're speaking in the moment so you have to be okay with making mistakes even native speakers make mistakes I talked yesterday in our grammar lesson about making mistakes and how that can be a good way to learn so in conversation we have to be okay with making mistakes so mistakes can be a good thing they can be a way for us to learn and to improve yeah if you agree then you can comment yeah or yes so nice to see all of your comments you guys are so nice everyone saying hello how are you happy Easter happy Easter to everyone regardless of where you're from it's a nice day to celebrate you know springtime we're starting spring here in the United States anyway conversation I want to share three things that you can do to improve your conversation right now for free so before I forget they are to copy what you hear to prepare before your conversations and to be okay with making mistakes of course we mentioned that before and oh yes actually the the third or fourth actually is to be an active listener in your conversations okay so copy prepare and to be an active listener let's start with copying so copying means that I want you to listen to native speakers I want you to really focus and pay attention to what you're hearing what are those phrases that you hear people saying all the time maybe your textbook taught you to say hello how are you I am fine and you but in real life you don't hear people saying that trust me real you know native speakers don't often say hello how are you I am fine and you I just saw some funny comment thanks Freddie we say hey how are you how's it going I'm good how are you or I'm great how about you it's a little different right and there's other things right like instead of agreeing by saying I agree with you that's okay it's correct but people might say different things like totally or right I'm with you these are different ways to agree that you might not find in your textbook or in your traditional English classrooms so I encourage you to listen to native speakers and to copy those phrases that you hear that people are using in real life and you know one way you can do that that's maybe easier than going out and trying to find native speakers if you don't live in a place with a lot of native speakers of course you can watch go natural English and you can join this challenge or you could take a go natural English course actually the best course for this that we have is the rapid English method course I'll just tell you a little bit about it because I want to get back to our three points to improve our conversation you can learn about the six-week online live practice course Rabbid English method with video lessons there's over a hundred video lessons in the course on pronunciation phrasal verbs grammar conversation fluency and more go natural English comm slash r.e.m program is where to learn more about the six-week program that's starting next week and I want to mention it to you because I highly suggest if you're ready to improve your English that you join because this week actually tomorrow Monday at midnight Eastern Standard Time is the deadline to join so if you are interested in improving your English more with go natural English check that out okay now back to the three points of conversational skills so the first one was to copy what you hear and use it in your own conversation the second one oh I hope I don't forget was prepare yes prepare so I want you to imagine the kind of conversations that you want to have that you're going to have maybe you're preparing for an interview or maybe not maybe you just want to be able to use English and everyday conversations well what kind of conversations are you going to have are you likely to have do you want to have and I want you to prepare those conversations in your mind or maybe on paper maybe you could write them down and if you feel stuck if you don't know what to say if you hesitate a lot in English this is a really good way to become more fluent because when you prepare when you have those phrases that you're going to use in your mind because you practice them before you're going to feel ready to use in real life so that is a great way to become more confident and prepared and to stop hesitating okay oh you guys are so sweet thank you so much for your comments Edson Freddie you guys are great thank you so much okay so our third point for today is a active listening yes okay so in a conversation especially on the telephone it's important to be an active listener so I used to help English learners to improve their English for work like with teleconferences using the telephone for business for meetings right that's a teleconference with with several people on the telephone line and one of the big problems was that these English learners didn't show they were listening and their their conversation partners their colleagues would confuse because they didn't know if they were being understood because there was just complete silence so it's important to show that you are hearing your conversation partner this is called active listening so basically you have two choices to be an active listener you have to show that you understand or that you don't understand so when your conversation partner is talking you could say AHA okay yes and not just say that because you know you you just want to say something but when it makes sense like if your conversation partner says hey can I tell you about something that happens to me this morning you might say oh yeah uh-huh makes sense right you're saying yes I understand what you said please go ahead but you don't need to say all those words you can just say uh-huh okay great if you're on the phone and someone is saying okay can we discuss the business proposal you can say yes uh-huh or even if they're in the middle of a story and they pause you could say aha yeah so to encourage them to come in you okay you can also your other choices if you don't understand you can show that you're being an active listener by actually communicating that you don't understand you can say I'm sorry could you explain that again in other words I don't understand so just be honest if you don't understand the worst thing that we can do in our conversation is to pretend that we understand because then that leads to even more misunderstandings especially at work if you say oh yeah yeah I understand and then you don't and then your boss or your colleagues are expecting something from you that you said you understood but you really don't understand they can get you in trouble I've seen it firsthand okay so those are the three tips for conversation improvement in English sorry I'm speaking very quickly I'm excited so again copy what you hear native speakers sing to prepare in your mind for the conversations you want to have prepare you can even write down the conversations that you want to have as if you're creating a story and three you can be an active listener simply by using phrases like yes okay got it or sorry could you say that again could you explain in other words if you don't understand thank you Esperanza copy that I like that but why are you thanks a lot to you it's okay awesome thank you so much you guys for being here today with me if you have not joined the challenge I want you to join for free at gonaturalenglish.com flash challenge because then I
