ladies and gentlemen it is time for day number three in the new in chess classic that means that the final five games of the preliminary stage will take place and the top eight players will be seated into a knockout bracket as always i've included some of the more interesting games of the day it is the final day so ultimately many of these guys are drawing because they want to maintain that top eight position but i did my best first game that we have to look at is and by the way pragnanda rameshbabu is on the thumbnail because today he took on magnus carlson hikaru nakamura and ferugia as his final three games pretty good test uh but the first game of the day is ferruccia versus carlson and it begins with a queen spawn and the smooth e3 and the idea of this move is to kind of delay the move c4 and in many situations anticipate the reverse queen's gambit and here ali russell likes to take and this leads to some weird positions where sometimes he'll just launch these pawns and try to hang on to this he's beaten a few players with this system but magus carlson goes for a reverse london so we have c4 c6 knight c3 and a6 very flexible setup essentially trying to throw in this move b5 and attack on this side of the board now um aldireza goes for the immediate confrontational move knight to h4 he's trying to get knight for bishop here uh and uh magnus carlsen plays this move this attacks the queen moves the bishop out of the way and after queen c2 he plays the move g6 because he would like to develop the bishop to g7 but after h3 normally you just go back because you just go well my bishop has nowhere else to stand i mean it there it's just gonna get taken uh if i go here i get trapped so that's not good but magnus carlsen makes his own rules and plays the move bishop e6 which again like if if i had a six-year-old student and they were a beginner and they played that i'd be like well you know listen uh student uh that's not a good move because then you can't play e5 you wanna make sure you can always play in the center but you know magnus carlsen is magnus carlson he does what he wants he's not really interested in the in the uh rules of the game and he just blocks his own pawn and then ultimately you know all the russell plays c5 bishop g7 and i mean just look at this bishop this bishop is miserable right it's got nowhere to go so the rest immediately goes after it f4 and in a close position of eight pawns each most important thing is obviously the pawn breaks so he plays b6 because he doesn't want to get suffocated now here alireza has a very interesting idea he can completely ignore this and just play g4 with the intention to just play f5 and trap the bishop on e6 uh i haven't had a chance to talk to him but essentially the idea would go something like pawn takes c5 and then f5 this bishop is just trapped doesn't matter if you take it's just trapped um but here you know magnus can play a move like queen c7 and try to get into g3 and kick everything over i would be very interested to know if alireza considered g4 because it looked like a very critical option uh maybe black can play knight e4 and look for confrontation immediately i don't know but what i do know is ali raza just played f5 right away and took on b6 and then his intention was to take on f5 now of course takes b6 you calculate takes or takes right not if you're magnus carlos and magnus carlsen as i said uh makes all his own rules uh magnus carlsen does all his own stunts and rather than taking back the pawn at all he plays the move c5 with the intention that if you take me i will go knight c5 so holly reza plays bishop takes f5 queen takes b6 attacks the queen it goes here and now he brings the bishop back his intention to bring the bishop back is to force magnus to play the move c4 and what this would do is allow him to back up now this pawn structure is frozen i'm gonna castle and i'm gonna bring my knight back play e4 and i'm very happy now hikaru once said about magnus magnus doesn't like to push his pawns if it's like push upon and make a really committal structural move or don't push the pawn he's not going to push the pawn in fact that's why he goes queen b8 and then he goes queen g3 look at this board awareness it's crazy well they wrestle plays knight f5 but that allows magnus to now immediately trade off his bad bishop play e6 they shuffle moves here a little bit then brings the queen back and then just kicks out the bishop and we have this position he offers a trade of queens and ali reza takes this fixes magnus carlsen's pawn structure completely has all six pawns to counteract the light squared bishop that he does not possess and after knight c3 castles i was very worried here for ali reza computer evaluates this position as minus 0.5 which is hardly better for black the problem is that you're my you know your opponent is magnus carlsen the problem is also that you're down some minutes on the clock ali raza plays h4 to try to maybe play g4 and h5 magnus immediately plops a knight there kicks out and brings in the knight now bishop to d1 and he activates the rook on the open file disallowing the easy development of this bishop aldi russia kicks out the knight and plays king h3 with the intention to play g4 so this is not under attack he does exactly that and as a good martial artist practitioner would magnus punishes that move immediately and judo flips him with f5 saying all right you want to fight on this side of the board we can fight your fight i'm gonna go here and then i'm gonna go here so this forces ali reza to make a decision he ultimately takes and we have g takes and magnus again improves his structure and opens up a new line of attack which might potentially be the g file and the second that alireza plays b3 gasping for air now this is destabilized and magnus brings in a rook he can play rook f or rook b so he chooses rook f and then after takes takes he's got a completely new line of attack which is why he played king h7 bishop h6 the only move to give advantage activating the bishop with pressure now he brings the rook back to get it out of danger and activates the only piece in his position that has yet to get into the game he accepts a rook trade as long as he can get his knight to e4 and as long as he can get his knight to g4 and now he takes he takes the worst piece in your position because he's able to cash in immediately and after winning one pawn a few moves later he just immediately lines up two attacks on this pawn and here alireza ferrugia well lost on time but resigned basically because he had no time on the clock and that was the end of the game i mean magnus carlsen just makes it look so damn easy sometimes it kind of makes me sad but it also makes me appreciate what i have in front of me kind of like a good meal you know when you eat it you're like damn but man when you so when you would also feels good to enjoy it second game that i'd like to show you is wesley so's game against arientari this one begins with a london i don't know what it is in a symmetrical london by the way i don't know what it is about this tournament but all these guys are playing to london alireza's playing to london wesley's playing the london we saw duda play london we saw aronian play to london london's just a good opening and you can get a great london course at www.gotham.com link is in the description i have many openings courses and a beginner boot camp as well at the time of recording on april 26 2021 but that plug aside couldn't skip that ad we have c4 and here there's an interesting line where black can play this move bishop takes b1 and after rook b after queen b1 bishop b4 and now the king has to go to d1 and it looks like oh and by the way you can't block actually blocking loses because you can't stop an attack here it looks like oh my god wesley what a disaster modified bomb cloud tried to take a puff but spilled everything and almost spilled the knocked over the entire bong no actually this this line is actually okay um and you know wesley plays bishop g5 and then he just takes him to center and his idea here after he takes d5 is that well you really can't do anything about my king like i'm gonna go bishop d3 i'm gonna go queen c2 and i'll hide my king here and i'll i'll castle by hand right king is in the middle you need to develop your pieces oh unless you're 2800 bip he just attacks in the center i mean you can't actually take this if you're atari because this would result in a check in this that would be very very bad so um he actually has to move and now we have bishop to b5 check now this move i don't fully understand but i'm also not a super grand master because i would have imagined that c6 would get played but maybe he had something in mind like i don't know maybe he would come back or attack the queen and then come back i don't know either way we got king f8 tari was like if you could do it i could do it too the problem is now you're just down a pawn g6 and here we have a nice maneuver by wesley queen e4 activating his queen to the middle of the board jumping in with the knight and then gluing in the knight with this pawn brings back the bishop when the bishop is attacked tari brings the rook to the middle and now he plays rook f1 why not doesn't need to do anything about his king but now it's about time now he's gonna bring his rook and then he's gonna hide his king on b1 that's exactly what's going to happen shuffles back the queen to get out of the way of any pins and nonsense gets out of the way of the night bishop to c4 to solidify his extra pawn queen eight rookie one queen a4 and king b1 and ladies and gentlemen now wesley so is like you ruined my right to castle and you blew over you know you you exploded my king's house now my king has relocated to b1 has put the explosion of his house behind him and now like a good mafia movie he's ready to you know exert revenge exact revenge exact revenge it's not exert revenge that was very bad english anyway well what do you do queen to d3 the queen comes back and well who are the foot soldiers in chess it's the pawns right you don't take down any mafia by going straight for the pin kingpin you go up the ranks so g4 let the pawns go first knight takes d5 f5 g5 oh you're so cute you want to close up the position f6 take it brother take my pawn knight takes f6 yeah and then queen f5 is gonna happen and that's bad news so he goes back to h8 but now just a nice queen rotation queen to h3 and you just can't guard the pawn you can you can block with the horse but the horse is not going to save you all right that's like trying to block you know a bullet or a bazooka with a horse it's first of all don't try that at home respect your horses animal abuse is not okay but uh in this instance tary tries to cover up with the only thing he's got in knight g6 check he resigns because after this there would have been bishop to c4 and um the game would have ended potentially with bishop c4 rook f7 bishop takes f7 king takes f7 takes here and uh a lot of wins in this position but none none cleaner than knight to f8 threatening rook f5 and it's just bad it's just very bad it's just very very bad and the london reigns supreme and uh don't try any of these cheeky stuff like oh you can't castle now yeah that doesn't work against guys like wesley so unfortunately so a rough one there for tari very nice game and now we will move to the third game this is a bit of a longer game this is an interesting game i try to throw in tactical crazy games but also some you know positional and destructive ones so here we have a uh an a6 whatever the heck this is queen's gambit declined um takes takes and this variation we actually saw in yesterday's recap as well uh in case you guys saw it and basically black takes on a relatively passive position but says okay i have two bishops and i will slowly expand later on in the game we have h4 which is a bit of a peculiar move we have h6 queen c2 bishop d6 and now he just launches in the center with e4 why does he do this when you have a lead in development in this case white has three active pieces and now by playing this has a fourth one the bishop and your opponent only has like two or one and isn't even castled you can strike in the center okay after it takes takes the threat is very obviously to pin the bishop to the king uh so we have queen e7 we have long castles and again here if you just lazily castle like i'm gonna play bishop d3 and try to mate you so we don't get that actually liam attacks the rook and the queen and tries to trade queens before uh getting out and he's uh he's worse here he is absolutely worse here like white clearly has a better position black's rook on a7 is just a complete no disrespect but i mean let's let's just be honest this rook just hasn't gotten out of the house yet you know needs to take a risk needs to go make a friend or two the rook on a7 is just a complete degenerate um yeah i'm gonna just stop looking at it so but the question is now what so he activates the bishop a little bit put some pressure but you know g6 and are you really gonna play bishop takes knight probably not so instead you relocate your bishop over here to have long range scope a5 taking the first necessary step to undegeneratizing that's a word that i just invented that rook a5 g3 knight f6 and now finally this rook has left its room and it's out to make some friends okay rook to e3 intending to double the rooks which is exactly what he does and now we see the other idea of expanding with a flank pawn you you just attach yourself to this bishop this bishop is very strong very annoying patrols both sides of the board and remember that plan to undegeneratize that rook rook to a5 now that rook is participating yeah d do except uh yeah knight takes a4 oops and here's the thing if you play rook takes a4 i take your bishop and you're just dead so you have to consider one of these options if you play bishop takes that's very nice but knight takes f7 is made it's just a check and you can't move anywhere because of my bishop that i relocated there a couple of moves ago so first by the virtue of logic you would take this knight and then you would take this and then this and then take stakes rook c5 and rook c3 okay so vivid has emerged from the opening with a very clear one pawn advantage in fact we also went through the entire middle game and what he wants is he wants takes takes and he wants to win this end game why is this winning same color bishop very important listen to me if they were opposite color like this bishop was a dark squared bishop on d6 very high chance the game ends in a draw oftentimes if it's five on six pawns and it's opposite-colored bishops and no one else around the bishops don't see each other they just kind of do their own thing they operate on their own color complex and most likely the pawns cannot break through but because they are same color they fight for the exact same color complex and the person with more pawns and more activity will probably win so for that reason liam does not trade rooks b3 and kicks out the bishop but liam does offer a trait of bishops why because this pawn is a liability it's wandered a little bit too far into the wrong neighborhood and uh there's not very you know it's like the tenderloin district district of san francisco that place is absolutely terrifying i have been there at night it was not very nice so bishop back to g2 rook to b5 and now king 2e8 unpins himself bishop d5 and here liam again very correctly notices that despite being down material he has this trade opportunity takes takes and g4 and the intention of g4 by vidit is to probably play g5 in the future this rook is covering for now but also it's not so simple to play a move like king f7 because i'm gonna get in and then destroy everything so liam before he plays anything plays the move g5 preventing vidit from connecting his pawns in the end game and making an advantageous pawn structure are you paying attention are you paying attention to this pay attention h5 slightly inaccurate move it looks good because again if king f7 rook d5 rook d7 but now liam just like he traded bishops despite being that down material realizes that it's finally time to trade the rooks normally you don't want to trade the rooks and actually in this case vidit doesn't want to trade the rights because if you were to trade then bang bang and i'm not sure who's playing for a win right so rook c3 c6 king c2 king f7 f3 king f6 now this end game is objectively equal it's rook in five versus rook and five but there is an imbalance you guys ask me all the time in the comments levi can you describe an imbalance and i'm like first of all that's not my name bozo you've been watching my channel for six months you still don't know my name and second of all um absolutely imbalances anything of pawn structure like three here two here with one lurking a b versus bc that's an imbalance rook versus rook is not an imbalance um if this was rookie knight and a pawn that would be an imbalance knight and bishop is an imbalance king e5 rookie for check and king d6 brings his king to the middle not really sure which way he's going to go yet again looking for the advantageous trade and the expansion very slowly bid it at this point should 100 play the move f4 and he does because after takes takes he would get in and get this pawn um and black would be forced to retreat so of course liam doesn't do that and he plays the move c5 understanding that if it were to take ladies and gentlemen what do you take back with rooker pawn i swear to god if any of you say this move yo you gotta take your hand smack yourself what are you doing why because it's worth less than a rook you're supposed to take with what's worth less no that's something called superseding concepts that's just the general rule you're not supposed to allow a pass pawn in an end game and chess there's certain concepts okay the end game concept would supersede here you want to take with the rook so we have a four it didn't do that it was a pop quiz and you failed okay you failed b6 king c3 takes takes rook g5 and now vidit makes a big decision he goes here he gives away the jeep on he gets the h pawn rook h4 rook 2h8 okay very nice he wants to go boop give a check promote so what does liam have to do liam has to move up give a check of his own and keep making progress h7 now there's a big threat here that threat is to give a check so what does he do checks him first and now hides he uses his own pawn as a shield and he's getting over to this this is bad now so what is vita gonna do well um vidit probably should consider a move like king to e1 because king b3 believe it or not loses it loses i want to give a check there's a pawn here what do i do about it a5 uh oh ba5 rook b8 and that would be very bad and there's really not much you can do i mean if you play b5 i'm gonna go a6 um i believe after a5 like a computer can can maybe hold this with some way of giving some checks and then at the right moment doing something but i'm saying it's losing from a practical standpoint like 30 seconds on the clock in a rapid game probably you're gonna lose um computer you know ruins all of our hopes and dreams and probably will still find some way to draw this but as far as as far as i'm concerned from the human standpoint at fifth move 50 of a rapid game it's over um but vinit tries this in a different way he plays b4 he tries this in a different way by playing the move b4 and he wanted this and he probably wanted a5 that's what he saw and it doesn't matter king takes check pawn takes check but he forgot that c4 is possible and now this is a past pawn and now none of your silly breaks are going to work okay silly i mean i don't want to insult vivid i like the guy well essentially what i'm saying is all of these tricks are not going to work and the king is just going to come here and uh-oh and that's exactly what happened and look at this c3 understanding that the promotion is allowable because then you would check and promote very nice end game technique and uh this was our longest kind of analysis but it ultimately comes down to this rook stopping this pawn and nobody can stop this pawn so c2 king d2 check and um resigned in this position because liam knows how to check may him with king and rook at least he trusted him i don't know maybe liam would have messed it up that's a joke for our fourth and final game of the day we have ali reza faruja again visiting us and we have uh none other than young staff duda the polish number one and uh remember i told you all that uh this opening is being seen a lot the london system yeah it's being seen a lot c5 e3 queen b6 now here we've seen a lot of players mess around with knight a3 which is a very tricky line after queen takes b2 knight b5 um this is actually covered uh in my uh well this kind of d4 bishop f4 with early night c3 stuff is covered in my uh anti a godmother london video when he made his and then i made you know we just kind of had this fun back and forth you can also go knight c3 which is a fun line to go knight b5 oliver as a farous who plays queen c1 this is not the most ambitious move but it does the job it's defends the pawn knight c6 c3 but duda my manduda was like this is my final game of the event i'ma come to fight win or lose i'm gonna come to fight knight h5 i'm going to move two times in the opening with my dad because i want your bishop bishop g5 the idea of this move is to induce certain pawn weaknesses like come and get me bro and all duda says all right i will i will come and get you and now i finish my development psych i'm going to attack your knight holly russell plays the move knight h4 he's going to go bishop e2 and attack this pawn on g4 ship to d7 bishop to e2 pawn to h5 very nice at some moment you probably have to do something about the pressure on the queen side and um maybe break with f3 now black is better here unquestionably material is even but black has more space black has more active pieces black has the long-term prospect of having the only dark-squared bishop so something like this with laser beaming pressure uh this knight is a just like that rook on a7 and these pieces are a little bit prospectless like the only way you're gonna get these pieces out is to make pawn trades right because the pawns are very annoying who wants pawn trades the guy with two bishops or the guy with one pop quiz number two who wants pawn traits the guy with two bishops because they're they want space so you got this one right 50 on the day just like all your grades in school a4 takes takes rook c8 and dude is just immediately attacking this dumb looking queen on c1 queen to b1 bishop h6 and now he's immediately attacking this knight on d2 so alireza just says you know what dude just take it i don't care if i lose the right to castle and here young stuff duda sacrificed his horse knight takes d4 realizing that the position here is utter chaos so you're going to get in and do some damage queen to c3 this allows you from castling queen to d1 queen before now he's gotten three pawns of loot back for his piece but alireza gets the castle and he castles and alireza here chucks one more pawn he gives away one more pawn because his logic is well first of all i can take on a7 and second of all all i gotta do is just chip away at the structure and i'm going to get to your king let's see if he's able to do that plays knight to b3 doesn't take the pawn on a7 now he takes it rook c8 due to focuses where he's stronger in the middle of the middle game ha middle of the middle game he doubles up his rooks with the intention in the future of doing some damage over here um rook back to a1 bishop back to g7 rook b1 rook b4 with some pressure rook c1 trying to trade rooks now duda here plays the top engine move and again you guys have probably heard me say this many times in my recaps when you are faced with a trade on the file of rooks you really rarely want to be the one to take it just be stubborn play rook c6 rook to c6 make them take you and improve your position only take their rook if it has like a clear benefit okay superseding concept something we talked about earlier but gotham said in that one video not to take i don't know why you go british for this impression but he said not to take and i would have had maiden one well then clearly go go for the mate and one clearly then it doesn't apply right in this case rook c6 is the right move you want to get taken so your pawn joins its friends okay if you have a friend sitting over there not talking to anybody bring him in bring him and make him feel part of the conversation right well alireza doesn't want that but now rook b6 and he's trying to trade he's trying to get an end game by trading some pieces he gets an end game very nice b5 and then only reza suddenly starts realizing what the hell is he going to do about this knight that he marooned here on move 12 and the answer to that question ladies and gentlemen is he's not going to do anything because he can't he has a tremendous weakness of pawns and his knight is stuck like you'll notice that dude is just slowly improving his position to the point of a rook trade that knight still can't move and after king e2 b4 king d3 king f6 knight d4 not trading he's not trading this but this actually is also winning for black because this knight is just in jail that would have been even funnier but he goes this way to attack the pawn knight comes back in b3 and alireza resigned is that funny just alireza just played without eight uh eight uh oh my god eight points six points of material look it's 10 40 at night like i you know i can't count three plus five three plus three whatever he played he played without six points of material ollie rosa put his knight on h4 on move 12 and was like i'll get it out at some point and then he just didn't like that thing that you're like i'll get to that at some you just don't do it you know like fixing those 50 grades in school like you just oh my goodness that poor horse and what a what a great game by duda just anticipating when to sacrifice the the right way to apply pressure and simplifying despite the being you know questionably down down material in the sense that he's not you know but but just not just negating this night for the rest of the game very nice game by um by duda and that really concludes the games of the day uh there was a lot of draws like i said there was some games that were there was one game that went 140 moves i'm obviously not going to show you that that game was kind of absurd uh but but let me show you uh what the the final eight look like yeah that's probably what you're all waiting for uh and the final eight looks like this so magnus carlsen continues his tradition of winning the preliminary stage i think this is five tournaments in a row in the champions chess tour that he's won the preliminary stage and we'll see if it's going to be five tournaments in a row he doesn't win the final he hasn't won the final at all he hasn't in fact won a chess tournament since he turned 30 years old uh i'm 25 so i got five more years of this and then god knows what's going to happen uh but he is in the first round taking on timor rijaba on the other side of the bracket you have um meaning straight down you have uh you have wesley so versus uh levan arenan on the other side nakamura versus lee kuang liam and mamijarov taking on furusho let me know who your favorites are in this matchup let me know who you want to see in the final whether it's magnus furuja or whether it's magnus vs hikaru or if you're a wesley saw or levon fan and ladies and gentlemen once again thank you all so much for making it this far on the recap i really really do appreciate it i read through the comments a lot i see your memes i see your dreams um and uh it's you know we have the best community on youtube on chess youtube as far as i'm concerned our engagement is amazing so many comments and uh you know when you make it these this far in the video and i get to tell you that i appreciate you i do appreciate you very much so i'll see you in the next one
