welcome to saint mary's parish good morning please stand come the found of every blessing to my heart to sing thy [Music] of grace never ceasing call for songs [Music] redeeming love [Music] [Laughter] of peace [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you we're celebrating today the feast of the chair of saint peter the apostle we're celebrating and giving thanks to the lord for the ministry of the pope um and we pray for the pope in a special way today because he's got a tough job and so let's rejoice in the goodness of the lord let's acknowledge our sins and receive his mercy you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you plead for us at the right hand of the father lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray grant we pray almighty god that no tempest may disturb us for you have set us fast on the rock of the apostle peter's confession of faith through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen so a reading from the first letter of peter now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of christ as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed i exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of god that is in your charge exercising the overseeing not under compulsion but willingly as god would have you do it not for sordid gain but eagerly do not lord it over those in your charge but be examples to the flock and when the chief shepherd appears you will win the crown of glory that never fades away the word of the lord not want he makes me lie down in green pastures he leads me besides the waters he restores [Music] there is nothing i shall want he leads me in right path for his name's sake even though i walk to the darkest valley i feel no evil he leads me for you [Music] they comfort me the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies [Music] my cup overflows and the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and i shall dwell in the house of the lord my whole life the lord is my shepherd there is nothing i shall want [Music] please stand gospel inflammation [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] on which [Music] the gates of hell will not hold out against it [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew when jesus came into the district of caesarea philippi he asked his disciples who do people say that the son of man is and the disciples said some say john the baptist but others elijah and still others jeremiah or one of the prophets jesus said to them but who do you say that i am simon peter answered you are the messiah the son of the living god and jesus answered him blessed are you simon son of jonah for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my father in heaven and i tell you you are peter and on this rock i will build my church and the gates of hades will not prevail against it i will give you the keys of the kingdom of god and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ among the greatest words in the history of the world our lord jesus says to peter i tell you you are peter and on this rock i will build my church and the gates of hades will not prevail against it i will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven now this is just a fancy way of saying peter i'm putting you in charge you're in charge of the church that i found it and some of the disciples might have said hey well wait a minute peter's not perfect peter makes lots of mistakes are you sure you want to put him in charge of your church and the lord his response is yes yes i trust peter even with his imperfections even with his mistakes i trust him and not only that i am with you always did you know that god is a great micromanager i mean he's taking care of his church even though he has peter who's imperfect who makes mistakes sometimes ultimately jesus is in charge you know what we call that we call that divine providence somehow even with a broken wounded weak leader who makes mistakes sometimes the lord is still getting the job done he's still leading his church and the thing is is part of the human reality is we need to go through dark valleys like we heard in the psalm today you know peter right after this actually the lord says he's going to um have to be turned over to the leaders and killed and on the third day rise and peter says no no this can't happen and our lord jesus reprimands him yes this has to happen i need to go through this dark valley and so too the church over the ages has gone through some dark valleys and the church in god's mysterious divine providence needs to go through these dark valleys needs to sail through these turbulent waters needs to experience these attacks these times of confusion these times of of uncertainty these times of infighting now one of the roles of the pope peter is to keep the unity and again it's it's it's basic common sense say you you're the owner of a of a supermarket and you're going to go away on vacation for a few weeks and you take one of the managers and you tell all your staff hey while i'm away this person is in charge and i trust this person so if there's a decision to make go with his decision he's in charge now some people might say well i don't you know i don't like this person he shouldn't be in charge i don't agree with him the boss wants all the staff to listen to the manager because otherwise there's division you know there's grumbling and brothers and sisters we all have a little bit of rebelliousness in us don't we it's horrific to admit but in all of us there's a little bit of that i will not serve and so when the boss is away the manager is in charge we tend to rebel we tend to gossip and and and again the boss he wants unity among the staff he doesn't want division and the person in charge he's the person who's supposed to keep the decision if he decides to close the store because of freezing rain half an hour early that's the decision you go with it and again when we apply this to to the church one of the most important things in the church is unity and it is the pope who keeps the unity and god is all-powerful he micromanages he makes sure that the gates of hades will not prevail against the church and so we have to trust god we have to trust god that somehow throughout the ages every pope even with his imperfections and all that was the one chosen and anointed by god to lead the church through these times and somehow everything is going to be all right like bob marley sings every little thing is gonna be all right sometimes we get anxious we need to listen to a little bob barely the odd time i'm just joking that's it i don't know much about bob marley maybe he's a great singer i just don't want to be endorsing a singer who might be saying bad things but the point is is we need to trust jesus he put peter in charge and peter will guide us through these turbulent waters god our father in your providence you chose saint peter as the leader of the apostles and as head of the church we pray as a community of faith under the successor of saint peter trusting in you that pope francis the successor of peter may exercise his authority in the spirit of service we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the pope and the bishops and those in the diplomatic service of the holy see may become effective agents of unity in the world we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that pastors and all lay faithful may be steadfast in their faith and obedient to the magisterium of the church we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the sick may find healing in the ministry of the church we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the faithful departed may join the saints in heaven we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer and we pray for world peace especially in the ukraine we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we also pray for all who are sick especially especially louis final we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the intention of today's mass for diane langebeer on her birthday offered by linda cobb we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer father help us to become faithful followers of your son by our obedience to the sea of peter we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] [Laughter] breath of god love and life that makes me free breed on me bread of god [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church accept with favor o lord we pray the prayers and offerings of your church that with saint peter as her shepherd she may come to an eternal inheritance for it is through his teaching that she holds the faith in its integrity through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you eternal shepherd do not desert your flock but through the blessed apostles watch over it and protect it always so that it may be governed by those you have appointed shepherds to lead it in the name of your son and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and marcel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven and give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] [Music] [Music] lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed hmm an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you're already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen this um so [Music] it's moving here in front of me moving here in front of me the one who made the love to hear his silence my every fear silencing my every fear i believe in you i believe in you you're the god of miracles the one who does impossible is reaching out to make me whole reaching out to make this [Music] let us pray oh god who at our celebration of the feast day of blessed apostle peter have nourished us by communion in the body and blood of christ grant we pray that this redeeming exchange may be for us a sacrament of unity and peace through christ our lord amen lord be with you and with your spirit bow down for the blessing father you are the god of miracles father open the hearts of your children to receive your wonderful power and love this day or give your children eyes to see that you are indeed at work in their lives lord let your spirit flow through your children your love lord come down from heaven and set your children's hearts on fire with you lord let this blessing bring healing to the sick let this blessing bring protection from all the powers of evil and lord let this blessing bring especially the protection of the precious blood of your son jesus from all harm from all contagion and may the blessing of almighty god descend upon you now the father the son and the holy spirit and remain with you forever amen mass is ended go in peace thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of
