Adding some special effects to your video  is a great way to express your creativity   I'm going to show you how to use masking in  DaVinci resolve by recreating one of the effects   that we use in our Coffee B-Roll. More precisely, the coffee transformation. If you haven't watched our B-Roll already, here's a link to our previous video so you can watch it and come back for the tutorial One thing I want to address before starting the video. I caught a cold and I'm losing my voice, so I hope it's gonna be okay This B-Roll isn't FX heavy but there's two scenes where we knew we wanted something special. The coffee transformation and the makeup effect. If you would like to practice with me along the video, all the files that I'll be using in this tutorial   are available to download in the description below. While the original footage is in 4k, we'll be using 1080p version of this  video to make it more accessible   and save on storage. Something to be careful  when creating special effects. The load on your computer can quickly escalate out of hand and the power required for advanced effects is of another magnitude than regular video editing. Several ways to optimize the timeline when creating a lot of effects, but the subject is pretty dense and we'll  be covering this in a dedicated future video. Let's start on that coffee transformation! In this scene blue is pouring some coffee grain and they're changing to a smooth blend when she's passing a hand above. This is very visual, yet quite simple to execute if planned properly. in this particular configuration we had to shoot the scene twice from the exact same position so we used a tripod and simply swapped the coffee grain by its blended counterpart. something very important we made sure to not move anything and used some sticky paste to maintain the coffee maker in place. when shooting for this kind of effects, make sure that nothing is breaking the continuity like changes of light or casting shadows. You'd be surprised how easy is to omit a small detail that can either ruin the shots or give you hours of extra work fixing it in post as the coffee transformation only lasts a few frames we don't need tracking in that case. Creating a mask that we will animate with keyframes is by far the simplest   and most resource efficient way to achieve what we want. Alright, time to jump into DaVinci Resolve. in the media tab search for the two files that you downloaded and drag them in the media pool. Then select both clips, right click... Create new timeline using selected clips. Give it a name and add two tracks. Click create. Jump into the edit tab. And here you will find your new timeline, with directly the two files added one after the other. First part and second part. Let's play it once and see what we have. Okay blue is collecting the grain Pouring into the coffee maker. Passing above and we have the second clip. Allright! Now that our timeline is in place. Grab the first clip bring it to the upper track. bring the Playhead to the moment where blue is covering the coffee. This is the moment where our transition will occur. Select the second clip and align it to the Playhead. Okay that should be good. To reduce the amount of frames rendered in Fusion, you can cut the clip just before the transformation. This is a good habit and will save you a lot of time when working on bigger project. Select the blade icon in toolbar or press [B] on your keyboard and  cut right before the transformation. Press [A] Select your clip Right click Open in Fusion page If this is your first time using fusion, no worries I'm going to explain what we have here. These two elements, are called nodes. Media In and Media out Media In is the media on which you're overlaying your effect. In that case, the part of the video that you selected. Media out is the output which is going to be rendered Now, let's have a look at what we need to recreate the effect. To create a mask and reveal the video underneath, we need first a Matte Control node to create and manipulate an Alpha channel. Start by selecting media in node    and then either click on Matte Control icon or press [CTRL] [SPACE] on your keyboard Type Matte [ENTER] To automatically add the node in between media in and media out. If you have only one window showing up Click on Dual Viewer and click on that little dot on Matte Control.  this will assign this node to the first window. The window on the left is the Matte Control, the window on the right is your output. with the Matte Control node selected Go to SETTINGS and check both Apply Mask Inverted and Multiply By Mask. To trace our Mask around the coffee, we're going to create a Polygon. Same as before. Select the Matte Control node. And then either click on the Polygon icon in the toolbar or [CTRL] [SPACE] Type Poly [ENTER] To automatically connect the Polygon node to the Matte Control. We're actually going to work backward from right after the hand passes the coffee. this way it will be much easier to work with a clean shape In the window on the left we're going to add our Polygon points. I'm going to zoom in by pressing [CTRL] and using the mouse wheel or you can use the menu here and choose a zoom level. We're going to add one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight points.  And close the loop. This is our mask but right now it's not very round. Let's fix this by dragging the mouse over all the points and clicking smooth in the toolbar   There you go, much better! If you need to align, just move the mask around or move individual points We're going to make a quick jump to the Edit page to have a look at the effect. Great, the mask is working!  As you can see there's some fixing to do if we want the mask to behave the way we want.   Let's jump back into Fusion and here we're going to animate the mask frame by frame. Select the polygon node and go one frame before the existing keyframe.  And here we're going to move some points to match the hand passing above. Just drag, point by points and use the handles to adjust the curve.    You can always come back and adjust to make it perfect but honestly better get it right from the beginning. Next frame As you can see the moment where you modified the polygon, it added automatically a keyframe. I'm going to drag these three dots Just keep working until you have something matching. If by clicking on the polygon,  you create a key point by mistake   just press backspace to remove it. You can press linear if you want to make it sharp or smooth to smooth it out. Okay that's not bad! One more At this stage avoid deleting any points as you might break the whole polygon. This is the last frame where we need our mask to be visible. So go to Level Add a keyframe Leave it at 1.0 for maximum visibility. Go one frame behind Add another keyframe and this time bring all the way down at zero. Now our mask is invisible. To make sure that our mask is blending better. We're going to add a bit of soft edge. Not too much! Now let's go back to the Edit page and play our clip to check the effect. Really good, it's working! Let's play it again! Not bad! You remember that advice about being careful with light & shadows? Look at attentively! There's one issue with these clips it's that the shadows are slightly changing. This is an easy fix! Open the effects library if it's not already and in video transitions, choose cross dissolve drag it at the end of the upper clip and just like that Super clean! Just add a little Speed Ramp if you need and you're done.  If you found this video useful, press the like button and if you like to see more tutorial about DaVinci Resolve think about subscribing to the channel And I'll see you... In the next video about planner tracker. PEACE! All right i think my voice is going to be completely gone tomorrow. Time to get some rest! See ya guys!
