what's up guys Justin here with the sketch essentials calm back with another Sketchup match photo tutorial for you so in today's video I want to talk about how to use match photo along with the video in order to create a 3d model in Sketchup before I get started today's video is brought to you by the sketch of essentials course the sketch of essentials course is a course that I created to give you a start to finish training in Sketchup so if that's something you're interested in you want some more training in Sketchup make sure you check that out at the sketch of essentials comm slash course now let's go ahead and just jump into it what I want to try to do in this tutorial is take images from a video that I took while I was out doing a training last week and see if we can kind of not necessarily stitch them together but use match photo in order to kind of build out a building and then use basically the texturing tools in order to apply textures so this is a video I took and I'm going to model some of these houses that I walked by and basically what I did is I took a video just walking by getting some kind of getting some kind of perspective shots of the building so I wanted to get a shot that kind of showed this side of the building I wanted to get kind of a front side view as well and these are buildings along canals in California but I basically was trying to get a straight on view and then a couple other views of this building so if i zoom forward a little bit then I look back I also got a view of the building on this side so we're gonna use match photo to build our actual building and then we're gonna try to use the texturing tools to see what we can create obviously we're not going to be able to get perfect because we've got some trees blocking the back side of this building but let's go ahead and what we're gonna do is we're gonna start off and I'm gonna scroll back and I recommend taking video of buildings if you're trying to do this just because it gives you a lot more angles so you can see how I can kind of scroll back here in order to kind of get a look at this building so you can see how right here in this frame I was able to get kind of a view that shows the building from this standpoint in this standpoint and this isn't an ideal angle for match photo but we're gonna give it a try anyway and so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna use the snipping tool which is a tool in Windows that allows me to take a screenshot and so that tool just looks like this and it kinda looks like a little pair of scissors icon you can also search for snipping tool but I'm just gonna click this new button right here I'm gonna kind of pull it off the screen so that I can click in here and get rid of my my playback bar but I'm just gonna click in here and I'm gonna do a new and then I'm just gonna click across this and I'm gonna take a screenshot and so the screenshot is gonna give me a view of this building that I can then use within match photo and while I'm doing this I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna save this and I'm gonna take two other images and so I'm gonna scroll forward until I get this kind of front view so you can see how this gives me a really good view of the front of this building and then I'm also gonna scroll forward until I get this back view so now I have three images that I can pull into Sketchup and I'm gonna start off with this image I'm gonna try to use match photo in order to kind of match up with the shape of this building one thing to remember as we do this is when you use match photo it's more a tool basically the tool is designed to let you set up your perspective view and also to apply photo textures so you're not locked into using that tool to apply those textures I'll show you what I mean in just a second so I'm gonna start off I'm gonna clean up my toolbars real quick I'm just gonna do a file import and you're gonna go find those images and I'm going to find my first image and I'm gonna click the little button down here for new matched photo and I'm going to click on this image and I'm gonna click import if you remember what this does is this brings this image in where you can line up all the different perspective lines and so I'm gonna do that real quick so I'm gonna use I'm gonna line up the perspective lines along the side of this building so that I can set up basically the way these go to the vanishing points so you can see how I'm gonna click my red box right here and this one's a little bit tricky because you can't really see anything off to this side and I don't really like to do this but we're gonna have to use this kind of short view right here as our second perspective line unless I can find something else which it's kind of blocked by the trees so we'll just try it like this it's not ideal but I think it's gonna be okay for what we're trying to do so then I'm gonna set up my green lines along the perspective lines running along the front side of this house and I can probably set this one up along this kind of planter looking shape and again this isn't ideal the ideal way to set this up is where you have very clear perspective lines going to a vanishing point but I wasn't able to get that angle based on where I was walking and so then the other thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna set my blue axis and usually you want to set your blue axis wherever you want to start modeling so wherever you want to start your building that's usually where I set that and then the other thing I'm going to do is I'm going to click and drag until my default model which is to scale looks like it kind of fits in here so this just allows us to begin with our scale and so this is probably about as close as I'm going to get with this image so I'm going to do some minor adjustments right here make sure we're along the correct line right here and then there we go so what we have is we have our match photo perspective lines kind of set up we can start modeling this building so now I'm gonna go over I'm going to click done in my tray and so when I click done in my tray you'll notice that now I have this image set up and already I'm noticing a problem which is my blue axis isn't quite lined up so I'm just gonna go back in and I'm just gonna click the little gear in the tray that's gonna allow you to edit those lines and so I'm just gonna edit this just a little bit so that my blue axis runs right along this corner straight up and down so it wasn't a huge edit but you can see how now this lines up with this corner so I'm gonna click done again so now I can just come in here and I can start drawing my building and if you remember the way match photo works is if I rotate out of this then you can see how you can see how my image kind of goes away you can get back to that by clicking on the front view perspective so now we're just gonna come in and we're gonna start modeling our building and so I'm just gonna kind of rough out the faces so I'm gonna use the push/pull tool to push this push pull this back and then what I'm gonna do in this case is I'm gonna use a little trick and the little trick is I'm gonna rotate out of this view I'm gonna rotate around the back and I'm gonna use the push/pull tool and create new face mode so I'm just gonna tap the control key you can see how that activates create new face mode you can see that cuz there's a little plus button here that's gonna create a new face and then with that tool active I'm gonna go back up and click on my tab right here and so what this is going to do is this is gonna rotate this around while the tool is still active so I can extrude this to the back of my building even though I can't really get around to the back side of this so I'm gonna go ahead and click and you can see how this kind of lines up with the backside of this building and then I'm just gonna do the same thing again where I'm gonna come over here and I'm just gonna click on this box then I'm gonna go back and click on my front view perspective tab you can see how this allows me to place this box and this is pretty close it's a little bit off right here but I'm okay with that so this really kind of lets us kind of rough out the shape of our opening so I'm gonna draw a little box here then I'm gonna push pull that back so again just kind of coming in here and roughing everything out and so what I want to do now is I want to come in here and you also could if you wanted to you could extend this up and draw a face in here for your railing as well so you can see how I'm drawing those along the axes and it's really important that you inference off of these edges you can see how that that allows me to make sure that everything's lined up here so you can see I have my basic shape kind of built out and so now what I want to do is I want to I want to apply a texture to this side because if you remember in my video that's about the only view I had where I can see this side so as I scroll backwards in my video you can see how I only had about a two second window where I actually had textures from this backside that would be uninterrupted by this building or by the front side of the building so we don't have a better view for this so we're gonna go ahead and apply the texture to this face and so to do that you're just going to click on this face and you're gonna click on the button for project textures from photo and it's gonna ask if we want to trim partially visible faces I'm gonna say no and I'm gonna click OK and so now if I rotate out of this you can see how this texture is applied to the side of this building and it's a little distorted but considering the angle that we had I'm ok with that so now what I want to do is I want to come in here and I want to basically apply the texture from the front side and so there's a couple different ways that you could do this the first way you could do this this is actually a pretty good view from right here so if you wanted to you could go ahead and click on this and apply the texture from here you could also rotate around to the front and if you remember we took an image straight on from the front that may give us a little better view I'm probably gonna use that for this right here but not necessarily for this front piece because the front piece is already set up so there's no reason to go in and kind of try to replace that so I'm gonna go ahead and I'm going to click on this face I'm gonna click project textures from photos I'm gonna say no to trim partially visible faces so now I have the texture applied here I have the texture applied here alright I'm probably going to go ahead and project this texture here as well so basically what we're doing is you know what maybe I'm not maybe we'll use this as another example so now what I want to do is I want to bring in the textures and apply them to this face and this face and so the way that I'm going to do that is I'm going to actually pull those in from the front picture that I took and so the way that I'm going to do that is I'm actually gonna import those as textures so I'm not going to use match photo to bring these in I'm gonna do a file import and I'm gonna bring my front view in as a texture so when I click on this and I click import that's gonna allow me to bring this in along this phase and you can see how initially when I bring this in this isn't placed properly or anything like that well we're going to use the position texture tool in order to move that around so we're gonna right click on that texture and click position texture then we're gonna click and drag until we get the general face that we want in here and so what I'm gonna do in this case is I'm actually going to right-click on this you can see this little checkbox for fixed pins we're actually gonna uncheck that so when I uncheck that what that allows me to do is instead of having the move and the rotate this actually allows me to set pins on different points and then I can click and drag this so that it lines up on this face and so I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna click and drag these to all these different corners or actually I'm not clicking and dragging I single click in order to set a pin and so usually it's probably a little bit better idea to go ahead and set those pins before you drag any of these but all you're gonna do is you're just gonna click and drag and you're gonna set each corner to the corner of your face you can see how I was able to use this image in order to bring this in I'm gonna go ahead and hit the enter key so you can see how now this is textured up here and we're going to do the same thing over here and in this case we can go into our material section and just sample this and then once you sample it you can go ahead and apply it to this face and then you can just do the same thing where you do a position texture and you basically find your corners that you want and you click and drag them in so you can see how now my building has a texture in here basically created from a new image that we brought in so if I click on this now we can kind of start roughing this shape out a little bit and so in this case what we want to do is we want to create an opening here so I'm just gonna take this line and I'm just gonna use the move tool and copy mode to create a copy of it that'll kind of split this face up and then I can push pull this to the back side and it'll cut a hole so you can see how now I have this opening in here and from our backside we should be able to pull an image of this so and actually what I'm gonna do in this case is I'm actually gonna pull a fresh image from my video so I'm gonna scroll to the right you can see how I can basically pull a screenshot of this door from this backside and so I can just do a save and I can just say backside door or something that I recognize and then we can go ahead and we can bring that image in so we'll bring this backside door in as a texture we'll apply it to this face and then we'll do the same thing with the Penn's review a texture position and then we'll just click and drag these along our face in order to align this image along the face so now we have textures on all of our sides and again what we could do in this case because again this is a super high-resolution is this is really good for creating quick context but it's also really good for if you wanted to come in after the fact and model all of these different windows you could do that so this image would have all your proportions correct because it's done from an image so if you wanted to do that you could definitely do that as well and so probably what I would do in this case in the case of a building like this one is I think I would most likely for this example we're actually gonna use a texture for our railings instead of modeling them out manually so the other thing I would do is there's a little bit of an overhang here so we'd use that same trick that we used before with the push-pull tool in creating face mode where we come back and click on this and then we could come out around the perimeter and push pull it out just a little bit so that it lines up with what we're seeing here and then I'll just come in here and I'll just keep modeling out my railing faces so that I comply a text so I can apply a texture to those and so you can see how I'm basically using inferencing because I know that these are most likely gonna be symmetrical and so they'll be the same height in the same location across my building so now I know where these rails are gonna be and then the last thing I could do because I don't really want to model the second building in this particular case just because it's gonna take a little while longer than I want this video to go so I'm going to cheat a little bit and I'm gonna use the back side of this building to texture this face right here so I'm just gonna rotate around the back side and then we can just do the same thing we did before where we do a file import and we can pull the back view perspective as a texture and just bring that in and then do the same thing with our pins where we position our texture so we right-click on it you may have to select it to make sure that it's the active texture and then go to texture position and start placing your points and in the case of something like this you might actually come in here and draw these out and apply a material to them because you can't really tell very well from this image because this plants in the way but you could come in and you could kind of split this face up and then you could create and apply a texture to these objects so that you actually have a material that fits what should be along this face rather than having a whole bunch of plants in the background so you can come in and you could kind of rough out your windows and then you could find something like a metal or a like a cladding material kind of this kind of like this one and then you could basically colorize that by matching maybe this color over here so that you could actually draw this on top of this and have kind of a realistic backside of your model and there's a couple different things you can do with this railing in this case I'm actually gonna go to the landscaping fencing and vegetation and just select this fencing metal straight that gets me pretty close to this railing or at least close enough that I have an actual railing applied here you could come in and model the railing as well so you can see how when I do this some of these aren't necessarily positioned that well so you'd need to come in and position those textures to I mean in this case you might go back to fixed pin mode and just kind of edit that this way so you can see how I kind of switched back and forth between fixed pin mode and not and you can just use that in order to skew this and stretch this a little bit so that you get kind of a see-through railing texture in here that fits with your building basically the idea here is when you're using match photo first of all it's great for setting up your proportions and also for setting up your building shape and it you can use multiple different images to texture your different faces so you're not locked into one image which is why I'm really kind of a big advocate when you're doing match photo work of taking video and then taking screenshots um you know again it's it's not necessarily great for detailed modeling work but it's great for kind of getting you started and then if you wanted to come in here and do detail modeling work it'd be real easy to do because your models kind of setup so leave a comment below let me know what you thought um is this helpful to
