what's up guys justin here with the sketchup essentials.com back with another sketchup modeling tutorial for you so in today's video we're going to talk about how to use match photo in order to quickly model out a building inside of sketchup so this is one of the things that we talk about inside of the sketchup essentials course sketchup essentials course is my complete course for learning how to use sketchup including live calls and a community forum in addition to over 14 hours of sketchup instruction so if you want to get more in depth with sketchup make sure you check that out at the sketchupessentials.com course now let's go ahead and just jump into it so basically match photo is sketchup's way of setting up a model based on an image and so what that means is that means that you can use an image in order to rough out or model out the size of a building based on an image that you have rather than just kind of guessing so really what it's good for is it's you it's good for using visual proportions of something in order to model something out it's also a really fast way to add context now from there there's a lot of different things you can do with it but what we're going to do is we're going to start by using a model from the website pixels which i will link to in the notes down below and it's just this building right here i think this might be one of the buildings out on microsoft's campus or something like that and so there's a couple things i like about this photo first off is that it has really defined perspective lines and so that's going to be really helpful because we use sketchup in order to align the axes with the perspective lines so that we can model with it the other thing i like about it is because it has such a defined perspective we are going to have to do a little bit of fixing of the texture so i can show you how to do that as well but i will link to that in the notes down below if you want to download it and follow it along but what we're going to do is we're going to go to file import and we're going to go find our image file and so what you want to do is you want to single click on the image file that you want to bring in and you want to click on new matched photo what that's going to do is that's going to bring this into the match photo settings inside of sketchup and you can use this in order to set up your match photo perspective lines so select match photo then click on import that's going to bring this in and it's going to be all these different lines in here it looks a little bit confusing it's really not we'll kind of talk through this so really there's three things maybe four things you need to focus on when you're setting up a match photo so the first thing is you need to set up the origin point so we're going to use the origin point as the point where we're going to start drawing or start sketching and usually what i like to do is i like to set that on kind of the front corner right here and so this is basically us setting up the sketchup central origin point so where the axes intersect so now what we need to do though is what we want is we want our red and green axes to align with the building and so the way that we do that is we're going to use these lines right here in order to set that up so what we want to do is we want to take these and we want to move them so that they're aligned with an edge inside of sketchup right so basically we're aligning this along the perspective lines when you look at an image the perspective lines always go off in the distance to a vanishing point we're using the defined edges in here in order to set up our axes by aligning this along those perspective lines so the longer these are the better it's going to be so what you don't want is you don't want to bring this in here really short right so for example if i was to take this and start aligning it with the edge you don't want to bring that in along something that's like this because it's really easy to kind of mess up this perspective line right here what you want instead is you want this to be as long as possible so that it's going to give it's going to give sketchup as much data as possible to align this with so we're going to drag this down a little bit we'll do the same thing down here so in this case we'll just follow this line and this line right here and you can zoom in in order to make sure that this is aligned as best as possible just like this and so now notice how the axis lines inside of sketchup align with the perspective lines of this photo then the other thing we want to make sure that we focus on is we want to make sure that we've set the scale properly right and so this is why i have my default model in here when i set these up my default model is in here to scale right so if i look at this default model outline and then i look at this building you can see that the building is far too small right so what we want to do is we want to click and drag on this blue line in order to set the scale so we want to set this so that our model looks to be about the right height so in this case this is probably about right maybe we need to be a little bit smaller usually it's a good idea to look at a door like this one and kind of align this based on the door so maybe something like this would be about right so now what we have is we have our perspective line set up and we have our model in here to scale and so you can do a quick double check to make sure that this blue line kind of aligns with the vertical line right here as well as the perspective lines are aligning like this but then all we have to do is just come over here on the right hand side like this and we just want to click on the button for done so when we click on the button for done what that's going to do is that's going to create a view inside of sketchup that's aligned with the perspective of this photo i can orbit out of that and notice how that picture kind of goes away and our perspective goes back to normal but if i ever want to go back to it i can just click in here and this is going to bring my view back to where we were before but now what i want to do is i just want to model out a box that kind of aligns with this building and so usually what i do is i like to just start with the line tool and just draw until i run out of data so you can make this go a little bit further if you want but i'm going to assume this building is going to go kind of right here then we're just going to draw another line up like this to the height of our building then we'll draw a line over here that kind of aligns with that and so we want is we want this to be a line that aligns with this edge right here and the perspective is a little bit funky over here it's because this has like a really pronounced angle to it but if you rotate out you can see how this is actually drawn this just as a big rectangle but then what we want to do is we're going to do the same thing over here so now we're going to rough out the side of our building so i'll just move this over here we'll draw a line down we'll align it with this point right here then we'll draw a line back across so you can see what that's done is that's given us two faces right here that are aligned with this photo and then if you wanted to you could draw a rectangle across here and push pull it up so that this is solid and i'm going to tap the ctrl key to go into create new face mode but we've got the basic size of our building so now there's some other things that we want to do like for example over here we've got a bump out on the building well we can create that bump out just by drawing a line across here and make sure that you're drawing it along the blue axis like this then we'll just draw a line across and we'll draw a line back up so what we've done is we've split this face well then we can push pull this out just like this and again it looks a little funky on this image we'll fix that in a second but for right now that's given us a pretty good idea of what that's going to look like and then we can do the same thing over here so we could just find the bottom point of this little bump out here and then we'll draw a line across probably whatever the width of this little bump out is going to be so i'm just going to assume it's going to be something like this and then i'll just use the arc tool in order to draw an arc that kind of aligns with what we're seeing in this photo so something like this and then we just use the push pull tool and tap the ctrl key to go into a create new face mode we're just going to push pull this down and so one other thing we might do over here is we might use the move tool in copy mode to create a copy of this edge that kind of breaks up this face where this glass goes right here we'll do the same thing right here and so what i want to do is i want to talk about a couple different ways that we can add textures to this right so the easiest way to do this and it's going to be a little bit difficult because the perspective is so off on this image but the easiest way to do this is you can just select a face like this and then within the match photo function over here in your tray which if you don't see by the way you can go to window default tray make sure that show tray is selected make sure that you have match photo in here but what you could do is you can select this face and click on the button to project textures from photo it's going to ask if we want to trim partially visible faces in this case that would be if there was a face that you couldn't see that was hidden by another face i'm going to go ahead and say no in this case because there are no partially hidden faces but what we want to do is now we can rotate out of this and you can see how that's applied a texture image to our face just like this but notice how this is a little bit off again due to the perspective on on this model we can go in there and we can fix that using the position texture tool so we can right click in here for texture and we can click on the button for position and so what we want to do is you see how we get these little pins that are right here right so what these pins do is they allow us to select a point on our object and then we can click and drag like this and one thing to note if your pins look like this you can just right click on this and uncheck the box for fixed pins so that these are just the pins that you just place and then drag but what i want to do is i want to go into my image and i want to find the corner point where this image would be if it wasn't skewed so i'm just going to single click and then click again in order to place this but then i'll click and drag again in order to move this across notice how that fixed the alignment on our face right here so that's one great way to do this so ideally right you're going to be able to just project your images from your photo using match photo then the other thing you can do if you want to if you don't want to apply these using match photo you can also go back and just import the image as a texture so you can just go to file import find your image and this time import it as a texture and click on import well then you could bring this in on the face like this then you could do the same thing where you right click into a position texture set your pens on your corner points like this and then you just click and drag your pens to align with the face that you want this image to be on like this so you can see how now we've got the texture image here and we've got the texture image here and so one thing i might do on a building like this is first off we like to place all the textures on here right so we've got all these placed on here but then what i might like to do in a situation like this is i might like to model the glass out so that it's actual glass instead of having it be just this placed texture so you can either use this to create quick context models or if you decide to get more in depth well we know exactly where our windows are now so we can just come in here and we can just model this out using geometry so i might click in here and just click across this face like this and so what i can do is i basically want to draw edges wherever the glass mullions are on this project right so i want to use the move tool in copy mode type in times 10 and hit the enter key and i'll just select this edge and then i'll just use the move tool and copy mode to create a copy of this edge then i'll type in divided by three and i'll hit the enter key so basically what we've done is we've taken this face and we've split it up into a grid like this well then i can just select all of those faces and there's an extension i there's an extension that i like to use for this kind of this kind of application called lattice maker and so what lattice maker is going to do is it's going to allow me to take a face it's going to allow me to create a lattice with that face with a glass pane so in this case i can just create a piece of glass right here so you can see how i did that for one of the windows but what we could do instead is we could select all of these windows then use lattice maker in order to actually create windows along this face just like this and so what we could do is we could use the texture image for the white for like the precast look but then we could add actual geometry in here for the window locations in order to make this look more realistic and so from there it's very simple you're just going to come in and you're just going to follow the steps and just add detail as much as you need or as little as you need so that's the great thing about match photos you can use it to really quickly photo texture quicker models or you can use it to model something more detailed so if you want to learn how to use match photo with multiple photos i will link to a video on this page about that if you want to learn more about how to use sketchup make sure you check out the sketchup essentials course i'd love to help you learn how to use sketchup more in depth but as always thank you so much for taking the time to watch this i really appreciate it and i will catch you in the next video thanks guys
