have you ever wondered what if you like to crawl through a b-24 bomber in flight today we're gonna find out [Music] we just got in the airplane we're waiting for the pilots to start up the engines and taxi out we're starting this off as we're sitting right behind the cockpit right down below it the all aircraft required Barry back runway Simon Anholt short instructions advise on initial contact drilling for babies checklist ok the briefing at double set 44 for takeoff go no goes 100 Billy repair that will stop on the runway up that will pop up in south or so here but clearly airplane up get 4444 on the validity we already put a park here I we can pack up all like all right CT for Judah from left turn left both of us runway Niner clear for takeoff traffic three-mile bottle nine left downwind departure proof for two to fortunate there right wind one fuzzy run three Gus funny States beep 63 power final we're okay right back I'm on the fishfinder no visual ain't no fun and we get the same situation she will bring him up to 25 it's so good [Music] thirty-five 37 so traffic not 44 so forth for to that table problem there's pieces 8100 M [Music] Fisher says Europe [Music] Vito 40-gallon terracotta terracotta face right no [ __ ] laughter I just want it to look good reporter alright here we go welcome aboard everybody it's time to let captain Greg and captain will do their thing up front let's go explore this 1944 b-24 Liberator the b-24 was designed as an American heavy bomber it was able to carry up to 8800 pounds of ordnance it has six gun stations with 10 50 caliber 12.7 millimeter m2 browning machine guns locating the turrets in the waist gun positions we're gonna start our tour off with exploring the nose gunner position first we got to get by this nose wheel which is spinning really fast after the takeoff arriving here at the front of the airplane was the location of the bomb adir in the nose gunner this location was actually considered more dangerous than the others due to the likeliness of flak from enemy guns penetrating the nose of the airplane the bomb adir was tasked with one of the most important jobs of the crew a crew without a properly trained bomber dear the airplane would effectively be useless in the campaign if he was not able to do his job properly as The Liberator was designed with bombing in mind the flight crew and the Bombardier shared a common bond when the bombing run would commence the Bombardier would actually take control of the airplane via autopilot during the bombing run the nose gunner was awarded with one of the most unparalleled views of the bombing missions giving him full access of the four view of the different bombing missions you can only imagine what it would have been like to look out these windows at the different fighters trying to attack your airplane and knowing you had to defend your bomber now that we're finished exploring the nose of the airplane we're going to crawl up into the chair of the dorsal turret gunner position this is right behind the cockpit of the airplane this position was manned by the flight engineer and gave the best defensive vantage point to the available firing arc compared to the other gunner positions this turret had a control panel which was motorized you can see the control panel there also you look out the windows you would think that the gunner would have to be very careful not to shoot off his own tail now that we're finished with the dorsal turret gunner position we're gonna make our way down out of the chair we're gonna go back towards the rear of the airplane and to get there we have to go through the bomb bay so be careful here guys we have to follow this narrow little pathway and each side of it are the bomb bay doors one step on those and you'll be dropping with the bombs it's pretty interesting to walk through this bomb day during flight but the motion of the airplane knowing you have to stay in the small little pathway looking at all the different bombs in the racks is pretty interesting before we continue this - let's go check in with Captain Greg and captain will if I just listen enough Steven land we just bailed off the b-17 took off from Fort Lauderdale executive work about 43,000 pounds of weight at 4,500 feet have the engines idle back to a low cruise our 30 inches about 2,000 rpm for burgers about 200 gallons per hour and about four of fuel at about four gallons per hour of oil right now smooth beautiful days a border uh yes really excited people to be flying off the b-24 some had family members five-year plan World War Two was pretty significant up here flying with Mia's will he's a airline pilot a very accomplished I divorced veteran the hit much better pilots and I but it's my turn my turn to fly today the privilege for us to fly that b-24 don't your mating client example of combat veteran all original combat equivalent stuff honest it's a memory of the thousands of men young men that flew the airplane adjustable for combat that we've by the fit we're just west northwest of the Fort Lauderdale area over the Everglades passengers are now that we're safely airborne their seat belts are off they're about to under supervision move around the airplane but the filter to the tail turret Bombardier station navigator station through the Bombay waist got experience all of that the difference is today it's about seventy five degrees where we're at right now and they've now combat over Europe the fight be minus 20 or minus 30 of altitude be fly of formations with several other airplane up to several hundred other airplane and a lot going on for those young crews between will and I we have a little over 20 thousand flight hours lucky if a combat crew had a thousand hours between the two pilots those days they're great guys everything we do is about preserving this airplane so that other people can see it an experienced experinces we don't believe in part in it the museum but you want to take it to the smaller airports around the country 100 in different sites we go to easier go on the Collins foundation website where if you see where we're going all our turns are nice gentle that's just easy on the machine couple things to share with you right now the four edge of this to get their propellers exactly synchronization before engine this is a little harder than two but right now we're flying into the Sun at will or I can look across with those prop planes if you can see the visual strophe what we'll stuff is a perfect job so as I look at the engine number one or two on the left side there's no strobing physical but also they're at a perfectly in sync same thing on the engines on the right side on the airplane all they read you can see from the camera that's behind the cockpit all the original equipment on here the only compromise we made is a modern navigation system of moderate radios to deal with the Fondren air traffic control system they Elsa's as it was this is actually where the autopilot control panel was or working it took that Fox where we installed the Potter baby on it well that was fun checking in with the guys up front now that we're back down in the belly of this airplane was continue exploring the beach one for we have now arrived at the position of the ball turret the smallest bomber crew personnel were usually assigned this position due to the take quarters they did not wear to parachute the ball turret on the b-24 was able to be retracted into the fuselage during takeoff and landing it was considered the coldest position on the plane and crew members would often report of prospect we now arrive at my personal favorite gunner position on the beach one the waist gunner position this area consisted of two crew members one on each side of the airplane getting to stand in an open-air window with their machine gun I could only imagine being up in altitude and how cold it must have been for the crew members back then [Music] we now arrive at the last gunner position on the b-24 this is the location of the tail gunner tail gunner was tasked to guard the bomber 6 o'clock position it would be common for him to find trailing enemy aircraft eagerly looking for an easy kill as we get in here you can see there's not a lot of room on the left hand side you'll see all the oxygen indicators and gauges and over on the right here you'll see the audio pin it's pretty interesting to see how the controls all work that would maneuver the gunman hey steve-o looks like they're coming around the land better go get your seat captain Mindy I didn't know you were on this flight thanks for the heads up better go find our seats let's go back up front and join captain Greg and captain will is they bring the b-24 back into the finals across local Clement used to fully bring up to 40 inches for father freedom props up to 2500 rpm engineer if you get the flaps to have immediately be able to pause the race here up full cut back around like so far de Franchi fee for Chile's mixed random doubly non ever title singles we have information shake ok guys straight at the runway GQ fortunately it's just land runway Niner report it gain or loss of 10 knots at 1000 G for a fake smile fun around my 1/3 runway Niner so to land when to one seven three one six across with ears petals ooh two three three and squeeze in my brief you know flaps 3 3 and over par Chiklis traffic for yourself angry stuff breaks for check turbos or Seth laps to go nuts for neutral well I check with the police clear lenses for gravity to the end turn right the ground for today I'll finish you're clear about three no ground laser to do forward you on Charlie or Birkin it baby about it supplies for November 2 for Julia across from a 1/3 in continued Bravo runway 1 3 at charlie Bravo [Music] all right that's a wrap big thank you to the Collins foundation and the wings of freedom tour you like that video please smash that thumbs up button subscribe to the channel we'll talk again someday soon [Music] [Music] [Music]
