Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
You can see how powerful ground effect is, even though he looked low, he had another 1000 feet+ of glide
While we see plenty of videos of engine failures I don't think I've seen anything as textbook as this. Can you think of anything he didn't do correctly? Because the only thing I got is it looks like he didn't lower the flaps for the landing when he had the runway made but that's hardly incorrect.
Going to share this with my students as a perfect example of how to handle an engine failure.
blows his engine
makes one of the most beautiful touchdowns he'll ever have in his career (did he even know he touched down?!)
he was a little low by the end and probably could have traded some speed for altitude and a less aggressive turn to final, but it was a great demonstration of how to calmly handle a serious situation. nice video, happy outcome.
Missed step one, which is to bail out of the aircraft immediately.
Haha I love the self pep talk he started @ 4:15. There's something very peaceful about a cessna gliding with no engine but you know.. obviously not given the circumstances. I talked to a guy whose 210 engine went out at about 10K feet and remember him saying "it got really quiet"
That guy has ice in his veins. Well done.
I was wondering if he might try to restart the engine but seeing those pictures at the end really showed how catastrophic that failure was. God damn.
And still managed to clear the active runway. Legend.
Beautifully done. The folks at
LycomingContinental will be interested in having a look at what's left of that engine.Edit: Oops.
