# ANNOUNCER: From
the Saint Ignatius Chapel, at the Manresa Jesuit
Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering, Ontario, the National Catholic
Broadcasting Council presents: The Daily TV Mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. ALL: Amen. The grace and peace
of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of
the Holy Spirit be with you all. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. Welcome to the celebration
of this daily televised Mass. I am Father Michael Coutts. The televising
of this Mass is made possible by the contribution
from the members of The Westend Seniors Club in the west
of greater Toronto area. This Mass is offered for
the living and deceased members of their families, in thanksgiving
for favours received and for
their personal intentions. Our thanks to the members
of The Westend Seniors Club, in the West GTA,
for the gift of this Mass. As we prepare ourselves
to celebrate this Eucharist, let us remind ourselves
that we have a god of mercy and compassion
who constantly cares for us. You were sent to heal
the contrite of heart Lord, have mercy. PARISHIONERS: Lord, have mercy. FATHER:
You came to call sinners. Christ, have mercy. PARISHIONERS:
Christ, have mercy. You are seated
at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. PARISHIONERS: Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God
have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us
to everlasting life. PARISHIONERS: Amen. Let us pray. O God, by whom we are redeemed
and receive adoption, look graciously upon Your
beloved sons and daughters, that those who believe in Christ
may receive true freedom and an everlasting inheritance. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever. PARISHIONERS: Amen. A reading from the First
Letter Of Paul to Timothy. "My child,
teach and urge these duties. Whoever teaches
otherwise and does not agree with the sound words
of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the teaching that is
in accordance with godliness, is conceited,
understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy
and for disputes about words. From these come envy,
dissension, slander, base suspicions, and wrangling among those
who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness
is a means of gain. Of course, there is
great gain in godliness combined with contentment. For we brought
nothing into the world, so that we can
take nothing out of it. But, if we have
food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want
to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many
senseless and harmful desires that plunge people
into ruin and destruction. For the love of money
is a root of all kinds of evil. And in their
eagerness to be rich some have
wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves
with many plans. As for you,
man of God, shun all this. Pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight
of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life,
to which you were called and for which
you made the good confession in the presence
of many witnesses." The word of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Thanks be to God. (Organ playing) # Why should I feed

And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke. PARISHIONERS:
Glory to you, Lord. "Jesus went throughout...through
the cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the
good news of the Kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had
been cured of evil spirits and infirmities:
Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven
demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife
of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided
for Jesus and the twelve out of their resources." The gospel of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Praise to You,
Lord Jesus Christ. In chapter five
of Luke's gospel, Jesus is teaching
the people on the seashore, on the shore of Lake Galilea, and Jesus is in the boat because the people
were crushing in on Him. And when He had finished
teaching, Jesus told Peter, "Launch out into the deep." Now, if you go to the Holy Land, the very newest church
that you can find is built precisely
at this very spot, where Jesus told Peter
to launch out into the deep. And it is called,
in Latin, "Duc In Altum." "Launch into the deep." It's a spectacular church, unlike many others
that we have seen. Instead of the altar
that we see over here, there's a huge, big boat,
and that is the altar. And at the back of the church, the back of
the whole back of the church, you don't have
a wall like we have here, but you have
floor to ceiling glass. And you can see
the Lake of Galilea. You can see the waves
going up and down. You can see boats on the lake. You can see fishermen going
back and forth on the shore. And in that "boat chapel," as we call it,
there are the 12 apostles, including Judas. He is the only one that does not
have a halo around his head. They are the foundation
of the Church, and rightly so. But more important,
in my opinion, is the foyer of the church, the lobby,
the alcove of the church, which is as big
as the boat chapel itself. And it is supported
by eight pillars. And each of these pillars
are dedicated to the women and others
who supported the apostles-- Sorry, to the women
who supported Jesus and the apostles
in their ministry, as we heard today. Three of those pillars are named
after Mary, the mother of God, Mary, and Martha,
and Mary Magdalene, whom we have heard today. Very often, we treat her
as a sinner, as a prostitute, just because seven demons
were expelled from her. The seven demons in those days are things that
you and I experience today in terms of things
like stuttering, um, Asperger's system, and attention deficiency. All these things
that you and I can deal with with medication in many ways were unable to be
dealt with in the time of Jesus, and they were
called demons very often. And so, these eight pillars are in honour of the women
that were in the gospel today. There is Susanna. There is Joanna,
the wife of Herod's, of court official Chuza. And there are others. And it is so symbolic
for me in a two-fold way. First, that these pillars
support the church, just like women have been
supporting the Church from the time of Jesus
and continue 'til today. And, apart from these pillars, that whole church
would collapse. Apart from the women
who make up half our population do support the Church, our
Church would also collapse. There's a second thing
that is very important to me. Is that you cannot
go into the boat chapel unless you pass these pillars. They welcome you into the church just like women have been
welcoming us through the Church all through the ages,
from the time we were born, My mother
took me to be baptized. They taught me
how to call God above Father, taught me my prayers, prepared
me by my first communion, prepared me for confirmation. It's not that
the others were not involved, but she, and women like her, have been constantly the ones that have been nurturing
the faith in our Church today. And so, what happens, is very
sadly in a patriarchal society of those days, and even now, the women
are relegated to the side. They are not
involved in the direction in which our Church is going. They're not called to be in
leadership within our Church. They are not called to give
an input into the policy in which
our churches are being run. And that is so sad, because
even our secular societies have already
been having women in leadership way back 70 years ago-- Not 70 years ago. About 50 years ago you had
Indira Gandhi in India. You had Bandaranaike
in Sri Lanka. You had Golda Meir in Israel. And those were
fantastic leaders. Today we have them in
Scandinavia, in Germany, in South America,
in New Zealand. But where do we have them
within our Church today? We need to take that
as an example. You know, the story
is told of Winston Churchill. He was some 70 years ago. That's why
I mentioned it early. They asked Winston Churchill,
'Sir, in the year 2000, what would you say
if women were ruling the world?" And Winston Churchill simply
smiled and said, "Still?" Because women
really manipulate-- Not manipulate.
That's a bad word. Do help to support,
to carry on in our... not only in our civil society, but within our Church. And unfortunately, we do not
give them all the attention that they need. As I stood
in that foyer of the church, I thought about other people
that brought out the very best in Jesus: Martha and Mary. Because of them, Jesus
gave us that wonderful phrase, "I am the life of this world. He who believes in me,
even though he dies, will live forever." It was the widow of Nain
who was all by herself that challenged
Jesus to advance His power and bring this
little child back to life. These women that we heard
in the gospel today were taking a chance
in a patriarchal society. If they didn't have
their husbands, their fathers, or their brothers next to them,
they were causing a scandal. And yet, they stood out because
they believed in the Son of Man. They believed that the Kingdom
of God was right there. They believed
and they came forward. It's up to you and to me
to begin to realize where the true importance
of our Church lies today. It's up to you
and to me to realize that, unless we open ourselves
to the role of women within our Church, we are sadly going to be
a very poor Church indeed. Jesus gave us
the example 2000 years ago. It's high time we do likewise. God bless you all. Would you join me now
as we pray together? Let us pray for
our holy father, Pope Francis, and for
all the women that continue, that he has appointed
within the hierarchy-- Not hierarchy, but within the consultative
bodies in our Church today, that they may continue
to give us an example and may continue
to support our Church. We pray to the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Lord, hear our prayer. In thanksgiving
for our mothers, for the nuns, for the nurses
that have fostered us and taken care of our lives
during... from the time of birth until the time we die. We pray to the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Lord, hear our prayer. In thanksgiving to God for the vocations
to the priesthood, for the vocations
to married life, and vocation to the single life
within our faith community, we pray to the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Lord, hear our prayer. Loving and gracious God, we thank You for all the gifts
that you have given us and continue to give us day by
day, through Christ, our Lord. PARISHIONERS: Amen. Blessed are You, Lord,
God of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have this bread we offer You, fruit of the earth
and work of human hands. It will become, for us,
the bread of life. PARISHIONERS:
Blessed be God forever. Through the mystery of this wine and water, may we share in the divinity
of Christ who humbled Himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are You, Lord,
God of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have this wine we offer You, fruit of the vine,
and work of human hands. It will become, for us,
our spiritual drink. PARISHIONERS:
Blessed be God forever. Lord God, be pleased
to accept these gifts that we offer to You, with humble and
with contrite hearts. Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God,
the Almighty Father. PARISHIONERS: May the Lord
accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory
of His name, for our good, and the good
of all of His Holy Church. O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and peace, graciously grant
that through this offering, we may do fitting homage
to your divine majesty, and by partaking
of the sacred mystery, we may be faithfully
united in mind and heart. We make this prayer
through Christ, our Lord. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. PARISHIONERS:
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks
to the Lord, our God. PARISHIONERS:
It is right and just. It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere
to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father,
almighty and eternal God. For just as You created... Through Your beloved Son, You created the human race,
so also, through Him, with great goodness
You formed it anew. And so it is right that all
creatures should serve You, and all the redeemed praise You, and all Your saints
with one heart bless You. Therefore, we too, extoll You
with all the angels, as with one voice we acclaim. (Organ music playing) # Holy, holy # # Holy # # Lord God of hosts # # Heaven and Earth # # Are full of your glory # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Blessed is he who comes # # In the name
of the Lord # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # You are, indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy,
therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit
upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become, for us, the body and blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time He was betrayed and entered willingly
into His Passion, He took bread,
and giving You thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples,
saying, "Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you." (Chimes ringing) In a similar way
when supper was ended, He took the chalice. Once more giving thanks, He gave the chalice
to His disciples saying, "Take this,
all of you, and drink from it. For this is
the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new
and eternal covenant, which will be
poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me." (Chimes ringing) # The mystery of faith # (Organ playing) # When we eat this bread # # And drink this cup # # We proclaim Your death # # O Lord # # Until You come # # Again # Therefore,
as we celebrate the memorial of His death
and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life,
and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks
that You have held us worthy to be in Your presence
and minister to You. Humbly we pray, that partaking
of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered
into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, Your Church
spread throughout the world and bring her
to the fullness of charity, together with Francis our Pope, Thomas our bishop,
the bishops across Canada, and this entire people of God. Remember also,
our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep
in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have
died in Your mercy. Welcome them
into the light of Your face. Have mercy on us all, that with the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles,
with Saint Robert Bellarmine, and all the saints
who have pleased You throughout the ages, we may merit to be
coheirs to eternal life, and praise and glorify You through Your Son, Jesus Christ. # Through Him,
with Him, and in Him # # O God, Almighty Father # # In the unity
of the Holy Spirit # # All glory
and honour is Yours # # Forever and ever # (Organ playing) # Amen # # Amen... # # Amen # At the Saviour's command,
and formed by divine teaching, we now dare to say... ALL: ...our Father,
who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on Earth
as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. FATHER: Deliver us,
Lord, from every evil. Graciously
grant peace in our day, that by the help of Your mercy
we may be always free from sin, safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope, and the coming of
our Saviour, Jesus Christ. ALL: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours, now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ,
who said to Your apostles, "Peace I leave you.
My peace I give you." Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of Your Church, and graciously
grant her peace and unity in accordance with Your will, who live and reign
forever and ever. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The peace of the Lord
be with you always. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. Wherever we are,
please share with one another a sign of peace. the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called
to the supper of the Lamb. ALL: Lord, I am not worthy that
you should enter under my roof, but only say the word,
and my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us all
to everlasting life. PARISHIONERS: Amen. (Chimes ringing) ANNOUNCER:
Please join me now in this act
of spiritual communion. # Let us pray. Grant Your faithful, O Lord, whom You nourish
and endow with life, through the food of Your word
and heavenly sacrament, may so benefit from
Your beloved Son's great gifts, that we may merit
an eternal share in His life, who lives and reigns
forever and ever. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you. The Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Mass has been celebrated.
