prayer strong with you to suffer pain in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit we shall omit the penitential right it will be replaced by the imposition of the ashes later let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take out battle against fragile evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the prophet joel now now it is the lord who speaks come back to me with all your heart fasting weeping mourning let your hearts be broken not your garments tone turn to the lord your god again for he is all tenderness and compassion slow to anger rich in graciousness and ready to relent who knows if he will not turn again will not relent will not leave a blessing as he passes oblation and libation for the lord your god sound the trumpet in zion order a fast proclaim a solemn assembly call the people together summon the community assemble the elders gather the children even the infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his bedroom and the bride her alcohol between vestibule and altar let the priests the ministers of the lord lament let them say spare your people lord do not make your heritage a thing of shame a by word for the nations why should it be said among the nations where is their god then the lord jealous on behalf of his land took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god our response to the psalm have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense or wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned my offenses truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned a pure heart create for me your god put a steadfast spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence not deprive me of your holy spirit have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned give me again the joy of your help with a spirit of fever sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ it is as though god were appealing through us and the appeal that we make in christ's name is be reconciled to god for our sake god made the sinless one into sin so that in him we might become the goodness of god as his fellow workers we back you once again not to neglect the grace of god that you have received for he says at the favorable time i have listened to you on the day of salvation i came to your help well now is a favorable time this is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god please stand for the gospel acclamation praise to you o christ king of eternal glory a pure heart created for me o god and give me again the joy of your help praise to you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to extract their notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not give have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win man's admiration i tell you suddenly they have had that reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right is doing your arms giving must be in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on the gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting i tell you suddenly they have had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ from today to palm sunday 40 days we have the season of lent len invites us to confront the reality of suffering and sin which we experience and we know whether at a personal social or even global level there is suffering there is sin in our midst there are people who are sick and perhaps due to the pandemic and it's not just in singapore but worldwide and we have a lot of pains especially in inter-personal conflicts and then there is international conflicts we feel pains when we hear of the russians in ukraine when faced with all these experiences of suffering and sin ancient jews tend to interpret it as god's punishment for the sin of man the first reading taken from the book of joel prophet jewell started with the description of the locust pestilence which destroyed all their crops and this passage that we have heard today was a call to them to repentance and the background again it was because they interpreted that disasters as god's punishment we do not agree with the old testament mentality where they attribute everything to god's punishment that is not true but suffering pain sin is a reality when it is actually due to human thoughts and sins and sometimes we know that is the case if you are addicted to gambling not only you suffer your whole family suffer if nations go to war everybody suffer and that's due to human thoughts and obviously if that is the case then we have to repent we need to admit our sinfulness we need to change our cause we need to back for god's mercy however there are situations that we know probably not because of our sin we just cannot explain and we don't have the full explanations of the reality of suffering in our life but one thing we do know that jesus the son of god make man he came to this world to share in our human conditions he has come to suffer with us even to the extent of sacrificing his life for us on the cross so although we cannot fully explain suffering but we know that god is with us in the midst of our pains and suffering and because god is with us we want to be positive in confronting that reality we are not going to blame we are not going to command we are not going to grumble blame god blame other people sometimes blame myself no we want to courageously with the grace of god to face the reality of suffering and sin and with the grace of god we do what we can to overcome these difficulties today's gospel reading mentions three traditional ways of spiritual exercises during this season fasting prayer and almsgiving there are means of purifying our souls and to enable us to be more open to god and to others fasting empties our stomach and we feel hungry and hopefully it reminds us of many others who are hungry every day the poor and the needy prayer opens our souls to god it reminds us that god is our creator and father and it reminds us of our own human frailty and vulnerability almsgiving opens our hearts to others it reminds us that we are one human family our lives are meaningful only when we learn to live not for myself alone but for god and for others pope francis recently quoted some wisdom sayings the original source we do not know but the sayings greatly inspired me rivers do not drink from their own water trees do not eat their own fruits the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves living for others is the rule of nature we are born to help one another life is good when you are happy but much better when others are happy because of you i invite you to join our parish day of fast prayer and almsgiving this coming friday the 4th of march of course we can do all that any other day but as a community as a sign of solidarity with our society we invite you to fast coming friday by taking only slices of bread and water not one full meal and one half meal you must feel hungry when you fast then only you experience what it means to go hungry and we pray for two common intentions pray for the end of the pandemic and pray for peace in the world especially in ukraine let us all pray together with one heart and one soul and gave arms we have embarked on this project of donating arp kids to rcc hospice saint joseph home and centriza's home we set the target of 10 000 and so far we have reached the amount so you don't have to donate for this course anymore but in your own way you know the poor and needy in your midst it may be your immediate neighbors maybe your relatives maybe someone that you know extend that arms giving to some of them do not neglect the grace of god say saint paul in his letter to the corinthians be reconciled with him later on we will have the blessings of the and the impositions rather we are going to sprinkle the ashes and we will do it only at the end of the month after the final blessings to facilitate your movements and some of you have to get back to work as soon as possible so we will do it only at the end this imposition of the ashes have a number of meanings it reminds us of our human frailty and our vulnerability we are like ashes therefore do not be too proud nothing that we can do without god or others secondly it reminds us of the transient nature of the worldly life from ash you come to ash you will return therefore do not be too attached to possessive of the worldly things and do not be to be too petty about some small aquarius among yourselves let go and thirdly to remind us that perhaps some of us we have sinned we have some sinful habits and behaviors and we need to repent so the word proclaimed during the sprinkling of the ashes later on will be repent and believe the good news with your pause for a few moments to reflect meanwhile for your giving to the church you can make use of pay now enter the church uen number those who prefer to give cash you can drop in the boxes provided as you leave the church [Music] so [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation to your goodness we have received acclaim holy holy holy lord god of host heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the form of all holiness make holy there for these gifts we pray by sending now your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took great and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which shall be given out for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which shall be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that have helped us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord
