the following presentation of the mass is made possible by your generous support of the catholic tv network oh [Music] the catholic tv network welcomes and invites you to celebrate the sacred mysteries listen to god's word and in the holy eucharist proclaim the victory of jesus over death until he comes in glory [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ be with you on this first friday of lent we come together before our merciful lord and we ask for his forgiveness i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord jesus christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord mercy let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through christ our lord amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord god cry out full-throated and unsparingly lift up your voice like a trumpet blast tell my people their wickedness in the house of jacob their sins they seek me day after day and desire to know my ways like a nation that has done what is just and not abandon the law of their god they ask me to declare what is do them pleased to gain access to god why do we fast you do not see it afflict ourselves and you take no note of it low on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits and drive all your labors yes your fast ends in quarreling and fighting striking with wicked claw with that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high is this the manner of fasting i wish of keeping a day of penance that a man bows his head like a reed in lie in sackcloth and ashes do you call this a fast a day acceptable to the lord this rather is the fasting that i wish releasing those bound unjustly untying the thongs of the yoke setting free the oppressed breaking every yoke sharing your bread with the hungry sheltering the oppressed in the homeless clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on your own then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed your vindication shall go before you and the glory of the lord shall be your rear guard then you shall call and the lord will answer you shall cry for help and he will say here i am the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] be merciful lord for we have sinned be merciful r [Music] for we have sinned be merciful [Music] have mercy on me good in your kindness [Music] cleanse me from all of my sins for we have sinned be merciful [Music] a clean heart of god [Music] cast me not away from your presence and take not your spirit from me be merciful lord for we have sinned foreign praise to you lord jesus christ king of allah's glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of alaska [Music] seek good and not evil so that you may live and the lord will be with you praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you r a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew the disciples of john approached jesus and said why do we and the pharisees fast much but your disciples do not fast jesus answered them can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord this wonderful reading from the prophet isaiah begins today you cry out full throated and unsparingly you my prophet speak in my name go and tell my people their wickedness that they may repent and return to me you and i are of course are that people easy enough it's lent so shape up literally and figuratively okay got it let us pray actually it's a bit worse unfortunately the message for us today is not that easy we're not just the people who are being addressed we are the people who are called to be the prophet we are called to speak on god's behalf because in our baptism all of us are made prophets and priests and kings and we are the people in whom the lord's own spirit dwells called to speak his words to others the words that he himself gives to us so what then is this wickedness that he speaks about the reading uses the word oppressed several times and we're going to hear several times during this lenten season it really becomes a rather easy question either we are among the oppressors or we are those who set free those who are oppressed and it's a contrast that we will hear over and over again the contrast between the ways that we do things and the ways that god does things and this is who the prophets are the prophets are those who help us to see how god is calling us to become more like him to cry out unsparingly isaiah says do you call this a fast acceptable to the lord is this the kind of fasting that god wishes that you go around with long faces no he says clearly our lenten practices are important but it's because of what they accomplish what they accomplish is what god wishes to do in us he wishes to change us from being oppressors to becoming those who set free the oppressed isaiah says we want to break every yoke that binds other people we want to provide them with what they need especially those who are physically hungry those who are homeless but all of us who are spiritually oppressed in any way and are in need of the lord we are the prophets that god wishes to send it's a privilege to be together on this first friday of lent everybody knows about catholics and fridays and lent what is it with you people that you don't eat meat what's up with that well hopefully they know us for that but they know us for much more as well and good news there's 38 days left we have time to take up these words we have time to respond i don't know about you but there may have been some lengths when you woke up late in march and realized that lent was almost over where is the time gone what is it that we can do today how is it that we can hear these words and respond to them well lent asks us to pray to fast and to give alms to pray to ask ourselves what does it mean that i could help set others free my own service here in boston is a faculty member at pope saint john the 23rd seminary and our role is to assist our seminarians to become good priests to serve god's people so yes it is my role to oppress seminarians but it is my role to help set them free to help them as best i can to change into those whom god wishes them to be i'm very happy to have two of our seminarians with us today pat long is from the diocese of venice in florida it's the diocese where my mother lives so i'd better be good to him he had a long career in the health care industry it was a marketing executive and brian delaney is a seminarian for our archdiocese the of boston and he was someone who was a senior manager in the global securities working with raytheon two very accomplished men who have heard the lord's call and wished to be among those who respond generously and so at our seminary we're doing some things this lent to ask ourselves these same questions how is it that we can respond to the word of the lord we've planned two events actually and we're spending a good bit of time preparing for those events the first one is we're going to invite victims of sexual abuse to come and speak with us to spend a day with them listening to them and coming to understand what it is that they've suffered and what it is that they have to say to us another is we're looking to understand much more deeply the grievous oppression of racism and systemic inequality in our world things that honestly often we don't really see unless we think and pray things in our schools our workplaces our societies so we're going to study together the usccb document on racism and then their wonderful representative danielle brown will join us for conversation and for prayer uh we're also going to have the black catholic choir from boston visit with us but that's more for fun and for inspiration but we wish to spend this time asking ourselves how does the lord wish us to respond and in prayer of course we we join praying for the people of ukraine and we pray for the yugar people for the rajinga for those who are suffering in the wars in central africa and the middle east we pray for children and families without food in parts of latin america and the caribbean and we certainly pray i hope for people right here close to home people in our own city living in tents and shelters one of the most prosperous places in the world and yet there are needy of such among us i hope that we can all put aside time i hope that we can all look at ourselves and ask what it is that the lord may wish it to say to us hopefully some time for prayer with a bit of silence okay maybe not mothers with young children but that all of us can come aside for prayer and maybe even help out a mother we know by giving them a little bit of time you know mothers are the best prophets i know they set their children free each and every day constantly and with love let us then be called forth by these words let us this lent seek to respond to what it is that the lord wishes to say lent is about god in his mercy changing us bringing about new things in us so that we become more like him and then the promise at the end of the reading will come true the lord will answer our prayers when we cry out for help he will say here i am let us then in a spirit of prayer bring our intentions before our loving father for all christians around the world during this season of lent as they prepare for the resurrection of our lord we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the people of the ukraine that they find peace and comfort in our lord jesus christ during this time we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for an increase of all vocations to consecrated life family life and to increase vocations at pope saint john the 23rd seminary we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for all those who are sick and in need of assistance may our divine physician embrace them we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer the lord would indeed hear us through christ our lord [Music] [Music] questions [Music] [Music] sure [Music] yes [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father we offer oh lord the sacrifice of our lenten observances praying that it may make our intentions acceptable to you and add to our powers of self-restraint through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god is just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and help us to imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim holy holy [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] highest [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and sean our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] taught by our savior's command and formed by the word of god we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] mercy on us [Music] you take away the sins of [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word shall be healed [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] bye so [Music] let us pray we pray almighty god that through partaking of this mystery we may be cleansed of all our misdeeds and so be suited for the remedies of your compassion through christ our lord amen the lord be with you r may almighty god bless you the father son and holy spirit amen let us go in peace [Music] we have worshiped god the father the son and the holy spirit the
