the incredible Kate Blanchet she has eight Oscar nominations to her name which one is my favorite and which one do I not like so much hi it's Brian welcome to the awards Contender and it's time for another Oscar ranking video one of my favorites Kate Blanchet let's start with number eight best actress Elizabeth the Golden Age I'd like to give your son my blessing i' be honored so I'm pretty sure Kate Blanchet herself would consider this her worst Oscar nomination just judging by her reaction when they played the clip at the Oscars ceremony in early 2008 usually when a clip plays the actor who's nominated will smile give a clap and this is what Blanchet did it's like she's embarrassed like she like don't have the camera on me point it anywhere else right here's the deal with Elizabeth the Golden Age she did not need to be nominated for that first off she's at the ceremony as a nominee that night for a different movie I'm not there so she's already in supporting actress is this one of those cases where an actor deserve to be double nominated I don't think so this is kind of a lazy nomination 9 years after Elizabeth she does a sequel and then she gets into best actress again but I think I think most people agree the golden Agee is not anywhere close to the quality of the 1998 original like Kate Blanchet is still bringing it in that movie she's still doing good work but the movie itself is kind of lackluster it's not really talked about anymore and I do think there were better performances in the field that year for best actress that should have gotten in instead my pick would be Helena botam Carter for Sweeney Todd she got in at the Golden Globes and I think that was it but I really dig that performance I think Carter should have another couple Oscar nominations in her long career and with Johnny Depp getting into best actor I do think Carter getting into best actress over blandit for Elizabeth the Golden Age would have been the better call number seven best supporting actress I'm not there I what do you care if I care or don't care what's it to you so here we have her other Oscar nomination for 2007 I'm not there where she plays Bob Dylan in a movie where lots of famous actors play Bob Dylan she's the only woman and she is the standout in that movie I saw one time it didn't really speak to me I liked it but I haven't really thought about it since it's a very cool experimental black and white film from Todd hannes and Cape Blanchet is an inspired choice to play Bob Dylan in that movie I like this nomination fine I do think the best actress nomination that year for Elizabeth the golden age is the one Kate Blanchet Oscar nomination that could go the I'm not there nomination can absolutely stay I mean she did pretty well that award season for that performance she won at the Golden Globes and she won at the film independent Spirit Awards so there was an outside chance Blanchett could have won for that film I think if she had not already won for The Aviator 3 years before in kind of a chaotic supporting actress field that year where a bunch of different women were winning different things Tilda Swinton ended up taking the gold trophy after only winning at bafta so Blanchet could have taken this one I bet it was close she's very good in the movie this is a fine Oscar nomination it's just not one of my favorites for Blanchet number six best supporting actress The Aviator can't you eat ice cream from a bowl like everyone else in the world all right so here we have the first Oscar win for Kate Blanchett playing Katherine heurn in Martin seses The Aviator early 2005 in the major categories it was really The Aviator versus million dooll baby especially in best picture and Best Director million dooll baby ended up winning there but The Aviator was very well liked it got into best supporting actor for Alan Alda best actor of course for Leonardo Dicaprio and that movie was going to win something big it just felt like that was going to happen all season long when Blanchet won best supporting actress at sag it was over like she was winning the Oscar she's playing a real life person a beloved real life actress who everybody Ador who won four Oscars herself this win totally makes sense but it's not in my top like three or four Blanchet nominations I've seen The Aviator twice it's a very good film blanch it is one of the standouts of that cast I enjoy her performance but compared to some of her other Oscar nominated turns I feel like her role in The Aviator is a bit more of an imitation of another person rather than just an original character she created from the ground up that's kind of why I have it farther down I do not hate this win or nomination at all she's very Charming in the film has lots of great scenes with DiCaprio my personal choice in this category for a win would have been Virginia Madson for sideways that was one of my favorite performances of 2004 but Kate Blanchet for The Aviator I'm good with that too number five best supporting actress notes on a scandal and finally we get him into this great local school and I'm pre to work and you're going to be a terrific teacher so I just talked about this performance and Oscar nomination in my recent category fraud video I did have this in my top 10 of a new ranking of category fraud examples at the Oscars I do think Kate Blanchet is in enough of notes on a scandal to qualify for co-lead but at the end of the day I still adore this Oscar nomination both Blanchett and Judy d are on another level in notes on a scandal that was one of the most thrilling films I saw at the end of ' 06 we had so many wonderful performances by women that year like just dozens and dozens of fantastic work in that particular year of 06 that was also an amazing year for Blanchet not only is she in notes on a scandal she's also in the good German and Babel like three end of thee dramas you knew knew Blanchet was going to be nominated for something it could have been Babel she's also great in that too but notes on a scandal was such a beautiful actor showcase for those two it was bound to happen even if Blanchet isn't supporting actress and you could argue it's a bit more of a lead performance she does such fine work in that movie in her quiet scenes in her moments of intense rage if you are a Kate Blanchet fan and somehow you have not seen notes on a scandal like you are in for a treat number four best actress Carol Merry Christmas Merry Christmas I like the have I don't know about you but I do think Kate Blanchett in early 2016 would have been more of a serious Contender and best actress for wins for the Todd hannes movie Carol if she hadn't just won best actress 2 years before for Blue Jasmine if Blue Jasmine hadn't happened and in 2016 the only Oscar Kate Blanchet had W was back in ' 05 for The Aviator in supporting actress I do feel like Brie Larsson for room wouldn't have necessarily swept the season the way she did I mean she was much younger than Blanchett and Carol was very well liked it didn't get into best picture and Best Director but it got like six or seven nominations total Rooney Mara got into best supporting actress and it was definitely on my top 10 list of 2015 I adore that film it is so beautifully made the acting is extraordinary it's so sensual the period detail the costumes the cinematography everything about Carol is divine and Kate Blanchett gives another memorable performance even though kind of like notes on a scandal here again we have a case of category fraud I do think Rooney Mara is more the lead of that movie than Blanchet is you could have swapped their categories like Blanchet for Carol could have been supporting and Mara could have been lead so there is that element that I guess doesn't make this Blanchet Oscar nomination number one or two or three but it's close they have such chemistry together they're meet cute at the beginning in the department store their love scenes that haunting final moment I have never forgotten Blanchet gives such a gorgeous performance in this one I'm happy she was recognized regardless of the category fraud of it all like whatever these are both fantastic Oscar nominations number three best actress Elizabeth I will have one mistress here and no master okay so also in recent weeks I have made another worst acting Oscar wi's video and I think most people agree that in early 1999 for a best actress at the Oscars pretty much anyone else in that category should have won other than gwenneth ptro for Shakespeare and love like that wind hasn't aged very well it's just kind of a shrug and what's really annoying about it is that there are some truly stunning performances in the category that year like Fernanda Montenegro for Central Station that would have been an Aller Victory and then Kate Blanchet for Elizabeth there are many similarities between Elizabeth and Shakespeare and love including Joseph fines but I do think the better film overall in pretty much every aspect is Elizabeth it's a little bit more serious darker doesn't have as much of the humor but the central performances in those two movies I don't think it's even close I think Kate Blanchett gives one of the best performances of her life in that movie she is so commanding but also vulnerable she has moments of quiet pain but also scenes where she lashes out at the people around her and it's just one of those Pitch Perfect three-dimensional performances that really announces a new amazing actress on the scene like Kate Blanchett had been a working actress throughout the '90s she's in a bunch of things but it wasn't until like 9798 where she really started being noticed in some projects and Elizabeth it was just immediate you could not ignore this Talent any longer and I do think this is one of the best acting Oscar nominations of the 1990s number two best actress Blue Jasmine but that's all history boys I met someone become a new person I have to be honest with you I went back and forth fourth on number one and number two for a while the last few days I was like is that going to be number one is that going to be number two I really did just make the final call about an hour ago and I went with the movie that I love more for number one but I do think blanchet's performances in these two films I'm going to talk about here at the end of the video are examples of some of the finest acting work we've had in the movies in easily the last 20 years I mean let's start with Blue Jasmine from 2013 Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine that opened in the late summer and I was blown away by Blanchet in this movie like we had seen some good performances in Woody Allen movies throughout the decades but this is definitely one of the top two or three Kate Blanchet just stampedes into that movie every single moment she is hysterical she is crying she is outspoken it is a big bold creative performance by an actor at the height of their powers like as Kate Blanchet was talking about in a lot of her speeches at the award ceremonies in early 2014 she had taken some time away from Hollywood like she was in a couple things here and there but from like 2008 to 2013 she's not in very many movies she was doing a lot more stage work at that time and in some ways I feel like all that work on the stage somehow made her even better more present in the movies she has done such incredible work in film since Blue Jasmine in the last decade or so but Blanchet and Blue Jasmine is on another level I think about that last scene she has on that park bench where she's just mumbling to herself the absolutely kinetic energy she has with every other C member in that movie Sally Hawkins who also got an Oscar nomination Bobby canaval Andrew Dice Clay Alec Baldwin that film is just a tremendous actor showcase especially for Blanchett like if there was ever a performance that seemed destined for an Oscar win in best actress like that one was undeniable even though there are so many Fantastic performances in 2013 in the lead actress category Sandra bulock for gravity Amy Adams for American Hustle like nobody could compete with Blanchet that year by the time Blue Jasmine hit theaters the best actress race was over like it didn't matter what came out in October November December Kate Blanchet was finally winning her lead actress Oscar trophy as she should have this is a spellbinding performance for the ages and yet it's not my Top Choice my number one choice for the best Kate Blanchet Oscar nomination is Best Actress tar the problem with enrolling yourself as an ultrasonic epistemic dissident is that if B's Talent can be reduced to his gender birth country religion sexuality and so on then so can yours so once again these rankings are very close I have blanchet's performances in blue Jazzman and tar very neck and neck I mean you could argue the better performance the more memorable bigger shower role for Blanchet of these two movies is Blue Jasmine I feel like a lot of people would rank Blue Jasmine at number one her performance in tar is much more grounded and subtle outside of a couple memorable moments we don't get a whole lot of emotion from Blanchet and tar but I still think this is her towering achievements like after Blue Jasmine most people would have said there's no way Kate Blanchet will ever give a performance that's as good as that and in many ways I do think Blanchet in tar is even better than she is in Blue Jasmine even though it's not as showy she has such a command of her craft every moment of tar you cannot look away and she gets to show so many layers she's very funny at times she has all of the conducting scenes which are very very impressive she has that incredible long take without a cut that every time I watch this movie I've seen it three times I am always totally amazed by Kate Blanchet in that scene the amount of dialogue she has for what five six minutes walking around a space interacting with people every single beat of blanchet's performance in that one take scene is perfect and then you just have one incredible scene after another for the rest of the running time what is tar 2 and 1/2 hours long and she is the show there are other great actors in tar but I feel compared to Blue Jasmine which is a bit more of an ensemble film tar is all about Kate Blanchett the writer director Todd field said if Kate Blanchett had turned me down I would not have made the movie She simply had to be in this there was nobody else who could have played Lydia t especially the way blanch it does she is just a force of nature all the way through that film I love the story The cinematography the editing and that Blanchet performance is an Aller and I do think if this movie had come out in 2021 or 2020 Blanchet probably wins the Oscar but in 2022 we also got the spectacular once in a-lifetime performance from Michelle yo in everything everywhere all at once and even though I do have this Blanchet performance in tar as the number one of her eight Oscar nominations I still do believe to this day that yo was the right winner and best actress that year still I adore this film I adore this performance Kate Blanchet inar holy and finally what's a performance Kate Blanchet has given in a movie that did not get an Oscar nomination but I think should have could have gone with nightmare alley I think she's very good in that I also really love her performance in The Talented Mr Ripley from 1999 but my choice is her delicious villainous supporting performance in a film I find to be vastly underrated Hannah don't walk away from me young lady this action thriller from director Joe Wright which stars CER as a young assassin kind of came in went at the beginning of 2011 but I loved it it made my top 10 list of the year and I especially adored that Kate Blanchet performance she's kind of Hamming it up a little bit it's a bit more of a broad villain performance than she usually plays but I don't know I just really enjoy when she's having fun in a movie especially when she plays an evil Sinister character like she does in in Cinderella and like she does here in Hannah she's not in a ton of the movie sersha Ronin is very much the lead but Kate Blanchett makes the most of her every scene in that film especially at the end when she has the final confrontation with Hannah like that is an amazing scene I have never forgotten Blanchet is Bonkers great in this and I think it would have made a really cool best supporting actress Oscar nomination all right now let's go through my final ranking number eight best actress Elizabeth the Golden Age number seven best supporting actress I'm not there number six best supporting actress The Aviator number five best supporting actress notes on the Scandal number four best actress Carol number three best actress Elizabeth number two best actress Blue Jasmine and number one best actress tar thanks so much for watching and subscribing and let me know in the comments below how would you rank cap blanchet's eight Oscar nominations and we'll see you next time at the awards contender
