some people might say getting an Oscar nomination will change an actor's life it often does it often boosts an actor's career does great things for them but there definitely have been instances throughout the decades where the Oscar nomination didn't mean much at all and in fact within a few years that actor disappeared from the industry altogether all right so what is my list of the top 10 actors who disappeared after their first Oscar nomination number 10 Maggie mcamera the Moon is blue but don't you think it's better for a girl to be preoccupied with sex than occupi so here's an interesting story if you didn't know about it it's kind of a sad story so Maggie mcamera she was an actress on the stage and she joined the National touring production of the moon is blue in 1953 she was asked to reprise her role in the movie version and she got lots of accolades the film got kind of a mixed reception but but she got a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in the Moon is blue 20th Century Fox signed her and she was immediately cast in the 1954 film three coins in the fountain but then she's only in a couple more movies and basically past the early 60s her acting career was over apparently she suffered greatly in her personal life after becoming a big star and in the last few years of her life she was making money as a typist so yeah she gave the world an amazing debut performance but then she kind of disappeared a few years later number nine Eva leg gallan Resurrection I just got this here feeling this would be the last time we we saw each other in this world he wish so like mcnamer leg gallan was mostly a theater actress like she has almost no movie credits to her name she appears in two movies in the 1950s including Prince of players starring Maggie mcnamer and then she's in one more film as grandma Pearl in 1980s Resurrection acting opposite Ellen bursten for her role in the film she won the national board of review Award for best supporting actress and she got an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress after making this movie getting the Academy Award nod she went right back to the stage and never appeared in a movie again number eight Justin Henry Kramer versus Kramer dad huh go forget once if you can just call me up okay now something I found in my research the last couple days and it does make sense a lot of the child actors who get Oscar nominations they're almost in a way the most likely to disappear kids act in film and TV for a lot of different reasons but once they become teenagers young adults many of them choose to just go do other things and so I have a couple kids on this list the first one to talk about is Justin Henry who gives such a remarkable performance in Kramer versus Kramer as of 2023 he is still the youngest nominee ever in any category at the Academy Awards only 8 years old at the time now Justin Henry did not completely disappear from the industry he is in a few films in the80s most notably 16 candles and then he shows up in a couple TV projects here and there throughout the decades but for the most part like he hasn't made much like his most significant contribution to cinema will always be Kramer versus Kramer number seven Mary batam To Kill a Mocking Bird all of a sudden somebody grabbed me knocked me down on the ground Jim found me then so like Justin Henry this was another child making their debut performance in a very celebrated film one that finally got got Gregory peek his Academy Award Mary batam was nominated for her performance as Scout in tequilla Mockingbird in the best supporting actress category she only appears in four more projects in the 1960s the most notable being this property is condemned but then yeah after that she moves on to other things does not continue her acting career even more so than Justin Henry I would say just a few years after her first Oscar nomination Mary badam completely retired from the industry number six Quinn Cummings the goodbye girls I think he's kind of cute he reminds me of a dog that nobody wants so Cummings like Justin Henry and Mary badam was also a child actress in the late 1970s her debut featured the goodbye girl from 1977 won Richard drus his Academy Award for best actor are you seeing a theme here yet cuz I certainly am Dustin Hoffman Kramer versus Kramer Gregory peek To Kill a Mockingbird Richard ryus the goodbye girl it's like all of these movies the main adult actor wins the Oscar and then the children that they work with in the film retire from movies like pretty soon thereafter kind of interesting Cummings did go on to do a lot of Television for a few years but she only makes one other movie in 1989 and by the early 9s she was retired as well she has gone on to become an entrepreneur and an author number five Piper Lori The Hustler so why go to college got nothing else to do on Tuesdays and Thursdays what are you doing the other days I J so recently on the channel I've talked about Piper Lori who just sadly passed away a few weeks ago when I did a deep dive into car at the Oscars she was of course nominated for best supporting actress for that film what an interesting career she had that started in the 1950s and movies and went all the way to the end of the 2010s so why the hell is she on this list well there was a period of about 15 years where Piper Lori left the industry disappeared into a quiet Northeastern town to become a wife and mother and she basically didn't act for at least 12 to 13 years what made it so interesting is that she gives this terrific performance in the Hustler opposite Paul Newman she gets an Oscar nomination for best actress she doesn't go to the ceremony and then she basically quits the industry she just says I'm done I'm good and then in the mid 1970s many many many years later Brian dep approaches her about playing Margaret White and Carrie and she accepts the job gets another Oscar nomination and then her career really takes off for a second time in a way but yeah there was that 15-year gap between 1961 and 1976 or so where she did kind of disappear number four Jay Davidson The Crying Game can't leave me now ahuh thing is can you go the distance depends what it is depends on nothing now here's one that definitely makes me sad because he had such talent as an actor he is such a force of nature in 1992's The Crying Game all of the buzz about that movie at the time was the twist oh it's not actually a woman but he gives such a Nuance performance in that I love that he was recognized with an awesome nomination for best supporting actor based on that one film he demanded a $1 million fee to appear in 1994 Stargate he makes that movie which was directed by Roland Emerick and then Jay Davidson retires from acting he did not like being famous and he just wanted to go back home to Paris and that's reportedly where he is today working in modeling and photography number three Roberto bonini Life is Beautiful all right so now we get into the top three where all of these names actually won a prize on their first nomination Roberto bonini's Oscar story is so interesting to me because at the beginning of that award season in 1999 Life is Beautiful was doing okay it didn't do great it didn't get into all the precursor ceremonies but then it becomes this monster at the ceremony itself and Roberto bonini wins best actor over people like Ian McKellen and Tom Hanks he's jumping over people's seats running through the auditorium like he owns the joints four years after that he makes the Monumental critical and financial disaster Pinocchio if people love bonini and life is beautiful they turned against him in Pinocchio and in the last 20ish years he hasn't been seen in much like basically all there's been is a small role in Woody Allen's to roam with love in 2012 and playing jepetto in a 2019 version of Pinocchio which did a little better than his 2002 version this Pinocchio got into the 93rd Academy Awards in best costume design and best makeup and hair styling so the man has worked here and there he didn't disappear necessarily but when you think about how well he did for Life is Beautiful I would say his follow-up projects are pretty few and far between and who knows if we'll ever see him in a movie again number two Kim Basinger LA Confidential you're the first man in 5 years who didn't tell me I look like Veronica Lake inside of a minute look better than Veronica Lake so here's a career that's always been kind of a heads scratcher for me Kim Basinger has this rise as a major star in the 1980s culminating in 1989's Batman she she's the female lead in that in the early '90s she's in like five six projects big meaty roles opposite major leading men after 1994 she takes 3 years off from filmmaking comes back with LA Confidential one of her best performances on film definitely and then wins tons of prizes including the Golden Globe Award for best supporting actress and the Oscar for best supporting actress you would think this would have been like a huge bump in her career she would have gotten much better roles in the years to come but then she takes another 3 years off comes back with two disasters in 2000 I dreamed of Africa and Bless the Child and then it's not like she disappeared right away she is in lots of films over the next decade or so but the roles really start drying up by the early 2010s like after a few years of appearing in very low key kind of mediocre indie films nobody was really watching she did have kind of a mini comeback I would argue with her backto back roles in the nice guys and 50 Shades Darker those movies came out just a few years ago so there did seem to be a sign like Kim Basinger is returning to the movies but then since 2017 she has been completely Mia and I don't know if we're ever going to see her in a movie again okay so what is my choice for the number one actor who disappeared after their first Oscar nomination this is a big one this is some somebody when you look back over the course of Hollywood history Oscar history it's kind of insane to think how fast she did disappear from the industry after winning two back-to-back best actress Oscars in the 1930s my number one choice is Louise Riner the great zigg Feld because I thought it would bring him back to me I was sure it would bring him back to me so I am finally after more than a year going back to my early Oscar video series on YouTube that series kind of disappeared in a way am I right but I'm finally going back I'm very excited to make a video All About riner's Oscar win for the great Zig Feld basically in the mid 1930s she was looked at as the next big thing was going to be a huge Superstar after just a handful of roles she is picked to play Anna in the great zig Feld from 1936 it is a muchh heralded performance she wins the New York film critic Circle Award for best actress and she wins the Academy Award for best actress in 1937 she makes three more films one of which is The Good Earth which earns her her second Oscar nomination and her second Oscar win for best actress I mean it's crazy to think after almost a 100 Years of the Oscars only two people have won back-to-back best actress trophies the other one of course is Katherine heer for guest who's coming to dinner and the line in winter in the late 1960s so for Riner in the late 1930s I mean things couldn't have been better two Oscar WIS for best actress back to back she was likely being considered for lots of different kinds of movies she appears in three more films in 1938 and then that was it she walked into louisb mayor's office and said to him quote Mr Mayor I must stop making films my Source has dried up I work from the inside out and there is nothing inside to give end quote she moved to Europe basically abandoned acting in the industry she had one more film on her contract I guess she had to commit to and that was 1943's hostages but basically after that except for a few TV appearances that was the end of the acting career for Louise Riner it's kind of amazing how much Oscar success she had right at the very beginning and how she still regardless soon thereafter disappeared from the [Music] industry
