Carving Bookends From A Tree Limb

I'm using wood from a Spanish Oak(red oak) limb that fell on my chicken coop. You can see the damage to the chicken run that I still haven't fixed! I'll start by cutting the piece to length using my 91 year old Oliver bandsaw That will be the only machine used for this project I'll use my axe to split the limb in half Now I'll cut the half into two sections These two sections will make the bookends Now I'll remove the bark using my axe Once I have most the bark off I start flattening the face of the bookend I'm using a scrub plane to do most the work Now I've switched to my low angle jack plane to smooth the face With that face flat and true I now need to square to one of the ends I'll use my low angle jack plane to work it square The low angle plane is very effective at cutting end grain Paper thin shavings! Now that its square I can start shaping the backside of the bookend I'll use my axe to rough out the shape I want I follow that up with my wooden spokeshave This tool helps me refine the shape I want Now I'm going to hand cave some texture into the back of the bookend using my gouge I'm trying to make full length cuts, its not easy! Now I need to work on shaping the sides Finally I clean up the top end grain with my low angle plane I love the quarter sawn grain on the face
