hello everyone thanks for joining me today it is canteen cup Tuesday and I got a little special thing going today we were on a roller Ranger campout all the guys are out swimming and doing their daily activities here at the powwow I thought I would drag out my my other canteen cup this is the third one that home it's a you'll see it it's a 1945 aluminum canteen cup with the rolled edge and today I'm going to attempt to roast some green coffee beans in there right here on the Coleman stove and then we're going to grind it and make some canteen coffee so sit back and enjoy the video [Music] [Music] you okay so I got my 1945 canteen cup here you can see if I can focus in on that ei company 1945 and this is the aluminum style with the rolled edge which is really cool okay so that's what I would drag this out today and we're going to start with a quarter cup of green coffee beans now I want to say right here in the beginning I am NOT a coffee roasting expert I just know enough to be dangerous so let me get the stove lit we'll add these and I'll just show you how I more roasted in here okay so we got the stove going I'm not sure how this is gonna work out never done this before so we're gonna add our coffee beans and I'm gonna try to stir this as long as I can without using the gloves basically you want to get it heated and keeps the beans moving and then they will begin to crack and turn brown and you're supposed to stop at your desired roasted this I guess that's the word to say okay the an outer skin will start to come off and that's what they call the chafe now usually I usually just blow into it and it blows the chafe out so hopefully I can capture all this on them for you so we'll let this heat up I'll come back to you okay you can see it's starting to change color already it's been about two minutes or so and you can see that we're starting to get some browning already looks like one of my beans fell out the cup and it's down there burning on the burner it's too late for him so we're just going to kind of sum up on keep it moving the whole time but every once while just pick it up and give it a swish around okay I just want to show you another progression it's getting browner and browner and you can see there's some smoke and that's normal so at this point on I'm just gonna kinda keep it moving more and more I don't want to get too burnt and other ones to be still be green okay so now you can hear the crackling and the popping of the beans do that so they're beginning to crack open from their shell dropped another bean down in there and then stove breaks my heart to lose a bean [Music] okay it's getting darker and darker as you can see smoke coming off of there so if I'm doing it wrong use experts out there just let me know but this is how I do it some of them are a little darker than others but that's okay we're out here camping they don't matter okay now we're starting to see some of the beans so if you can see you good or not but some of them getting kind of shiny that's the coffee wall that starts to come out in them so we're getting really really close here to stopping the roast okay so I think we're going to call that done looks pretty good when get a good good amount of light and you can see some of them are looking a little shiny and there's still a little bit of popping going on alright so let me show you the next step okay so now I brought everything out here helping our new piane you can see there's some little skins in there and that's called up the chafe is what our are called so what I'm going to do is just blow into it try and get this on film and the chief will come flying out the top of the cup much better okay so now I've blown a lot of the tape off might be a little bit left in here but that's okay I want you to see what we start with the green one is the green coffee bean that we started with and here's the one one of the ones I just roasted you can see how much larger they swell up then when they first start out which is pretty amazing so now let's keep let's cool off really good and then we're going to put them into the grinder okay so my wife bought me this nice little hand grinder for coffee and maybe teas or you could probably even do your own spices with it and it's got this will remove the lid here just kind of pull back and it's got a bowl here in the top and the cutting teeth are in here we're just going for our coffee beans downside there seal this up now I've already preset the grind that I want so we're just going to earn it until all the beans are ground so I'll get back to you whenever it's finished okay so here's the finished ground coffee in this nice little glass container I have my canteen cup ready to go so as you guys know from my coffee videos I got about two cups of water in here and about that much ground right there I ought to do it and notice I put it in there cold and now I'll light the stove here okay and we're going to bring it to a boil when it comes to a boil I'm going to count one minute and we're gonna take it off so I'll bring you back when it when it's that time okay you'll notice here that the starting to get some bubbles now and as it comes to a boil you got to kind of watch it closely here you don't want to boil over your coffee but as it starts to boil it's going to incorporate these grounds into the water all by itself I didn't stir nothing so I'm gonna turn the heat down now just a little bit I don't want the boil over and it's going to incorporate our grounds in there you go here we go so we're counting one minute now there you go you got to watch your heat because you don't want to boil your coffee over and this stove is super hot when I reach a minute I'm going to take it off and I'll show you what the next step is okay it's been about a minute in a few seconds and the next thing you do is get cold water from your canteen or whatever and then try to show this to you by backing up you want to hold your canteen just a minute guys from a height above make sure I'm getting this on film it's going to be above it and when the cold water goes in you want this splash just a little bit like that and that cold water right there just that little bit it's going to force those grounds right down to the bottom and so in about a minute or so it'll be ready to drink so we'll put the lid on here and let it sit and we'll come back okay so now it's been sitting for a little bit not very long of course I can't get a good shot at that but it won't pour a little cup here from my fellow Ranger leader Robert it looks a little bit thin so I may have underestimated my grounds but if it's flavorful coffee it will make up for that hopefully so there we go well that's it for this week's edition of canteen cup Tuesday using this neat 1945 aluminum canteen cup I like it a lot I don't know how many these actually they were actually made but it seems pretty rare to me by looking online if you like
