Buying a new pickup truck

[Music] alright I'm not gonna make it up this hill see the check engine lights flashing [Music] right there [Music] that's low gear all right so this truck just isn't running on all eight cylinders and I don't think it's an ignition problem at this point just based on how much oil it's burning I think it needs a idea needs a motor or I needed a new truck so let's see if I can find a good deal on a motor and if not let's try to find a new truck [Music] all right so I decided to get another pickup truck so this is what after searching for a couple weeks this is what I found this is a 2002 and it's got the diesel motor in it now searching for these trucks I found it's people are pretty much giving away the gas ones like they do not hold the value at all I wanted another diesel finding them is harder especially with a short cab 90% of them the cab is longer than that and I didn't want that and I even went to a dealer just looking at brand new ones and everyone at the dealer the cab was too long it's got the standard transmission in it and it's all stock that's the other problem of finding these trucks most a good percentage of them are ruined by aftermarket parts I didn't want that I wanted one that had not been messed with so this was someone's work truck and it's got the right amount of dents in it you know it's kind of smashed up a little bit so I'm pretty rough on them I didn't want one that looked nice because this the first time I put a dent in it I'd be upset about it this thing it's all it's pre dented so the bed's pretty smashed up but the other thing that this trucks really got going for it is that it is not rusted out all right and I may fix this gray one at some point I may use this I'm kind of thinking I want to use that for plow in this winter it just needs an engine I found plenty engines for this truck for cheap or next or free because they pretty much come like one of my friends got the same truck he's like oh you could just have it take it take the engine fix your truck they all have bad transmissions every one of these trucks you look at has a bad transmission another one of my friends has the same truck he's like 700 bucks comes off the plow it's like well the plow is worth 700 bucks so it's pretty much a free free truck so this may be my plow vehicle for the winter but right now let's focus on this one this thing needs it runs and drives but it needs some attention I just put a windshield in it nice [Music] it looks that way it's actually perfect like it was offering cover in like an inch it's alright so when she's done let's take care of all the other little issues that this has to get this thing ready to be driven and worked with all right first thing I want to fix here this is for whatever reason both of the tailgate latches are not here anymore so I just got some brand new ones from the Dodge dealer let's get those installed so here's the nut was actually in here I mean almost this bed is pretty beat-up maybe it's because this gap is too wide [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so now it's too much look it's like all the way against it oh it's working I think they gave me the wrong ones of these or something all right so I'll just put some spacers on there [Music] [Music] this was not working and I see why already that looks like the taillight wire right there good all the corrosion in this thing all the screens stop here this is corrosion that's because they didn't use the right type of wire for this application they should really be using tinned wire for like a marine application [Applause] I'll put a little bit of electrical grease in this connector to help prevent corrosion I mean it's already started but this is the wrong type of connector for this all right nothing's actually working here and it's getting power I don't think it's getting ground you we got calyx now trying to get four ways it's gotta hear but it like doesn't make it through this plug it's all right that's what I'm doing here you all right so these are all finished let's see if it works light turn signal on whatever I wired a long-held not so he needs a parking brake that's annoying that's on the list of stuff to fix parking brake all right their turn signal look at him notice in here someone was bypassed and this these plugs on this side - let's see what the other thing they use they use these these are garbage so since everything's working I'm not gonna fix it but I'll be revisiting that probably in a couple of years we've got a nice new trailer plug but someone installed it like that that's always a good feeling right there putting plates on something [Music] that looks better that bumper all right that won't fall off the last one of these trucks I just looked at the guy had no air filter in it I showed it to him he's like oh wow then the I mean it's like come on you know every one of these trucks I've been looking at it's been like destroyed geez this filter almost looks nicer than I don't know this foam piece there's no squirrels in there you [Music] all right let's check this thing out up on the Left first time up here so we got no broken leaf springs that's nice frame is solid so we gotta fix these parking brakes looks like it's got a drum parking brakes that's good at least you need those shoes to see a new transfer case it looks like that's good and this thing is solid usually trucks like this are so rotted out few joints are good noticing they did away with the vacuum disconnect on this front axle that's my older Dodge had that and it never worked [Music] alright while that drains let me get this steering damper change I think it's bad the trash one of the drives I was doing it was off trying to hit some potholes and it didn't got like a death wobble I mean Chrysler's and jeeps like to get it usually this fixes it but other that's been driving fine it was just kind of like running the thing full throttle on a bumpy road it's bad thing isn't completely bad but see there's like a two inches of just sort of bounciness here and here's the new one it doesn't have that it's just a nice that's how it's supposed to be like you push it and it's just hard to push but it moves smoothly alright this is bad [Music] [Music] all right that's a nice easy job that'll make a handle better those are important that those are good [Music] all right so another problem we got here this hood just falls down alright so it looks like to put these on and off all you do is you pry this retaining clip with a screwdriver that's nice all right let's put a boil in this much oil this takes like my dog truck is easy it just it's this whole bucket that's perfect right there let me start it up and check it all right the oil level that's perfect right there so to remember the oil changed there we got the date in the miles alright there's a handful of grease fittings under here let's get all them we got a section of pipe here of a hole in it this will fix it that's fixed all right let's see if we can get more parking break out of this thing I mean this thing needs to be changed but maybe we'll get a little more out of this yeah I don't have this part right now but I got an idea all right I need a bolt with threads like the whole way so to make that cutting oil alright now we got look at that that's the parking brake alright let's start from there I say that's be even better than the original design it's certainly simpler all right you can see the parking brake it's still going right to the floor it's a little stiff but it shouldn't go that far down hanging all right I tighten it as much as I can tighten it with a deep socket oh there we go that feels pretty good alright Here I am on a hill trucks in neutral when I let off the brakes rolls right away let's put the parking brake on look at that yeah I couldn't if it was in gear and it wouldn't be running just want proof so I mean so that's important to have a parking brake especially in a standard you know at least an automatic Scott Park but all right so that's fixed [Music] all right the next thing on my deal off is this driver's door got a couple things going on here one that looks bad plus this is bent in and the other thing that's happening see when you go to close it it hits the it hits this and it's and it's messing this all up action actually that's breaking alright so some people would go and replace a bunch of parts let me show you the free way to fix this one of these doors - whoa now when it closes all right cool just come around a little bit a little bit that needs to come out of hair look at that line is just premium premium bodywork right there looks like it huh where you going come on get in you never been in this truck yeah have you here let's get in we get in there there you go buddy a little bit of 99-cent spray paint might take a couple coats here all right that looks good well good enough the door works good that's important all right what's next all right I'm trying to find a mirror my friend says he's got this parts forward here and see if that's the same [Music] all right all right cool I'm good with that alright I'm on my way right now I was just doing a delivery with my for dump truck and the guy sent me back in the woods and I got stuck it looked alright and he had a truck there so I was like all he can pull me out if I need it but it was a Dodge a new 1/2 ton but with pushed by the four-wheel drive and those never worked so we're digging around the tires and rocking it for a while but it just you know it's at the point now where it won't even move so hopefully and then we gave up with his truck because the four-wheel drive was just grinding alright so I had him drive me home I got my diesel so hopefully this will pull it out and this is up a mountain too yeah that's the truck there I didn't that four-wheel drive all right so this is a really important feature of trucks right there manual four-wheel drive shifter if they don't have that they don't work and I won't buy a truck that doesn't have that if it's got a push button I'd only go on it all right so here's the situation right here see this is this guy's tracks that truck wasn't doing anything and you know it doesn't look that bad that doesn't take much to get these stock this right there that's the wheel that's kind of got its stock [Music] [Music] [Applause] now you're still spinning I gotta I gotta keep pulling all right well that's out now so I gotta get my dad to drive me back here to get get that but yeah that pulled it out no problem that was easy that that stretchable strap really helps to because you can get the way that works you can get a running start and then with a chain it would just like it's a jolting truck braking snap but with this strat it gives it a little bit of a stretch which and that turns that little bit of a stretch into like a really tremendous pulling power so that definitely helped to this guy over here I think could barely even move back in there it was pathetic alright let's uh let's keep fixing this up all right we're headed out right now we're about to enter this truck in the truck pull out the fair so let's go I mean the things the hundred percent stock there's a lot of people in the diesel class that put a lot of work into their trucks I mean the things that really make it work better for the truck pull are having really good tires making the engine more powerful and adding weight to the truck and I've done none of that so I will still do it in this truck but one year I brought four trucks to this thing I brought I had my two and a half ton army truck I put my Jeep in the bed of that and then I had a pickup truck towing a trailer with an Isuzu Trooper on that and the trooper had that was welded Pozzi was super swampers the Jeep was posi was super swampers and I pulled the pickup truck and I pulled the army truck and when I pulled the army truck I left the Jeep in the bed of it in one year at the army truck I broke the driveshaft and the thing then I I'm bolted the driveshaft and put it in four-wheel drive or six wheeler or whatever and drove it home front-wheel drive [Music] [Music] [Music] alright well that was a truck pull 2019 next year all I'll make it more interesting [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right I got another bundle of tracts cut up and I just had the steelyard do it they did it with a bandsaw so much easier and using demo saw you and I've got more of these track pieces available if anyone wants them alright both of these we're missing the bulbs and for whatever reason so I got these new LED ones just making sure these wires have power all right before I put these in I'm noticing it's got these holes here where the old sockets we're supposed to go that I don't have now keep those from filling up with mud and water [Applause] all right cool another bright all right one more annoying thing about this truck the the seatbelt here it keeps falling down in here on hard to grab so let's put a new stopper on it all right about here all right and there it is there so now the seatbelt doesn't fall down past that so now when I go to grab the seatbelt it's not going to be down here on the floor where I can't get it between the door it's gonna be up high where I can reach it all right so I've been driving this truck a couple weeks now and I just spent the last week and a half fixing up this trailer for it's real good combination right here all right so I just fixed the radio and the interior light it was just the fuse and a bulb was out so the thing I want to deal with now is this seat so we've got two things going on here one is that it's completely worn out and the other thing that's annoying the thing that makes it tilt so you can get to the back and plus the seat is a little bit too far forward this should go back a little bit so I got a new seat for this all right that one's better at least the back adjust works on that one [Music] all right some while I'm out of here the seatbelt light is permanently on in this thing which is annoying it should be out right now so let me just try to plug in the other one oh this one's got a lot more wires going to it that's interesting it's the same please go out no I'm still on bail lights down [Music] [Music] see this is what I couldn't do any other one look at that right right there see that's how you adjust you see your wrist should sit right about here on the steering wheel alright so previous owner did some upholstery work willful that still doesn't go up and I feel like this is the right seat for this truck alright well that's better alright so I'm pulling an excavator right now probably telling about five tons and the the truck it just for every reason it just got really sluggish you know it won't kind of wrap over 2,000 rpms there's no check engine lights or anything but you know I think it's starving for fuel let's saw put a fuel filter in this thing hey I'm on another Hill so watch like full-throttle and it's like I'm taking my foot off the gas look at that thing so that's full throttle right there it's barking right now [Music] all right so that filter is under the hood on the right side of the engine alright the fuel filters right there that thing [Music] all right so here's the filter so I don't like how it's dirty I'm like both sides of it so there's the actual filter itself rusting out and geez which way this is thing filter man that is the gross in there all right there's new one there all right well this filter is definitely bad like look at that but the other thing that really worries me about it look at that look at the inside of this filter the thing is like this metal core is like rusting out and introducing rust into the fuel system I don't know if that I mean this is a CARQUEST filter they shouldn't make that out of steel like that all right well let's put the new one in [Music] [Applause] [Applause] all right my miss you be she just broke down here so let's test out this fuel filter I could drive up some hills to get this back to get a fixed all right so let's see how the truck does go on up a hill here's a decent let's see if I can keep 55 so this was the hill that's how I realized I had a problem I was going up this and the thing was like dropping below 40 all right I'm right to the floor but yeah that's where I could find out all right that's working fine out of things evil able to keep the speed limit going uphill during it but the water and fuel light keeps coming on but I mean doesn't like stay on its on and off let's see if we can fix that all right this thing here that's the alt that's the fuel filter and it's the water separator that's water now we're starting to see some diesel see the bubbles okay now we got diesel all right and you can see what came out of here it's very clear see at first the water comes out because the water is heavier than diesel and then once that all drained out it was just clear diesel so that water separator light thing is working properly all right I just had one of my plowing customers call me they said a tree blew across their driveway and they can't get in so let's go see if we can help them out I can somehow they can get in there they got like a tunnel oh I guess this driveway can't get in all right it's been a couple weeks since I put that fuel filter in it and the trucks been running fine but that light comes on alright so let's revisit this fuel filter thing where is that [Music] oh there is water in it during this whole thing right out you know what I can feel a bunch of stuff in the bottom of that [Music] [Music] whenever I turn the key on at this go I feel alright that's all back together let's drive this thing around for a while and see yo with us here and check out one thing with these car quest filters look at how they get rusty that was only in there a couple weeks so you know even the inside is rusty I don't think these are good filters that shouldn't I mean the filter is like introducing its own rest of the system [Applause] that's good that lights out [Music] all right let's drive it for a while and see if that light stays off all right so I've been driving this truck a few weeks since messing with that fuel filter and I have not seen any water and fuel light come on and the truck has been running very well so I'm confident that's fixed all right the next thing I want to deal with here is this bad so there's a couple holes cut in it that I just want to get patched up all right so here's the worst spot right here someone cut that open to fix the fuel tank [Music] [Music] these self-drilling screws work really raw for sheet metal alright that looks good now let's patch up these holes right here [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] all right I'm good with that all right so this truck it has a spray in bedliner but let's just touch it up with some spray cans it matches you you know what these these cans come out so much faster in these cans you alright that looks better [Applause] all right I just got a toolbox and a back window protector for this thing so let's get these installed our first thing I gotta do I gotta fix this bed it's hitting a cab it shouldn't do that [Music] [Music] [Music] you all right well that's only tinfoil that's good enough okay so as far as mounting this thing goes they had these bolts welded on there with these things so these are all bent I got to replace those and put wider ones you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so I've been driving the truck for a day now with this screen kind of roughed in there but you know what I don't like that mash it's too hard to see through it I'm gonna change it with mash of bigger holes [Music] so you can see in their rearview I mean you can see through a but just not enough you know I I think the next size holes will be bought that's better I've been driving this a few days I want to make a few quick changes so this I want to extend out to here cuz that looks bad this is that's too flimsy and the third thing this mesh put this in here right now so to fix this flex I think if I had some angle iron or it under here but not even it now just flat just a flat bar put this plate right here see how it is after I welded already you you these are tabs for side accessory lights check out this flap disk [Music] [Music] you you you here's one quick shock tip that I really like here I'm looking for a tool right now I can't find it I know it's here somewhere I'll find it but whatever I'm looking for something instead of just looking I'll clean and put stuff away instead I got all this I'm done with that way just in case I don't find it at least I cleaned and I usually and usually find it quicker that way too you all right so I know that was a lot of work for what looked like a very minor change but there's a big difference in being able to see through like like when I go to look through this like all you'd like to see was the mesh and you'd have to like focus through it this stuff you can just see right through it it's a lot better so this background I traded some tires for this for my friend but I was going to buy one but I didn't see any online that I like and plus people were asking a lot of money for these so if I was going to make one but say if I was making one it's almost worth it to set up a jig and make maybe five or ten of them and then try selling them because I mean this is about the perfect design for a back rack and it's pretty simple you could probably even could have done without that box there but you know making once you get a jig set up and everything it's that's a way to make some you know decent side money like you make a part for your truck and then make a few extras I bet if I had this for sale right now I wouldn't have any trouble selling this alright let's get this all installed [Music] [Music] that's nice and tight now really this is an accessory every pickup trucks in half because it's very easy to break these back windows if some cargo tips over and in an accident I've even seen stuff fly through the windows too so this will stop that as well all right let's load up this little box this box it probably would have broke right here if this wasn't under here supporting it because that's how they wanted you install it I mean the thing is it's made out of pretty thin metal but it's got a five-year warranty I'm gonna put it right here so I never lose it [Music] pry bar this [Music] hey make sure you get a heavy-gauge these are two games the lower the number the thicker the wire recoveries coverage drop that's good forget trucks out of mud ratchet straps all right well that's a nice organized pickup truck box so I'm sure I had more tools as I need stuff but that's that covers all the basics I hear I'm driving with Levi and that new mesh is nice like you could just see right through you don't have to like focus through it that's definitely the way to go you know what else I should have done I should have taken that brake light box thing off of there there's no reason for that all right here it is in the daylight yeah it looks nice all right I've been driving this truck some time now with this seat but there's two really annoying things about it this seat must have been out of afford or two because to get to the storage space back here you flip this to flip it forward but this one stops here and the other thing about it is that this foam you know it's pretty uncomfortable sitting on that so let's try to get the right seat in this thing [Music] [Music] [Music] junkyard so this one's rip too but at least it does that I'll try to use the cushion off the passenger side which is good here's my good seat frame here's our good driver seat which needs the new cushion right now passenger side cushion and go on the driver's side seat all right and there is a there's a good seat [Music] [Music] all right cool I finally got the seating this thing fixed right what do you think Levi so that can be adjusted forward to get to the back like it's supposed to and since it was out of a passenger side it's actually still in good shape all right so I've been driving the truck for a while now and the thing that's happening now the rear brakes remember I touch them it makes like a squeaking sound so that usually means it means brake pads so let's go do that [Applause] you want to see a socket explode watch [Laughter] I'm just let it sit till that bleeds out [Music] that sides all done and look at the brake pads on this side how worn down they are there's right there that was the noise right there that thing hitting the brake rotor it's been a week or so since I put the brakes in this truck and they've been working fine and completely quiet all right well that's fixed that's nice this thing as this breaks in the back there's so much better than drum brakes right leave why right leave it one more thing I want to add to this truck real quick there's a dash camera that's this thing here all right so let's clip this on right here that's nice and tight not gonna fall off let's hide these wires this here's a GPS receiver they want you to do is just plug this into the ashtray liner but that looks sloppy having something permanently plugged in there let's open this up here all right let's go to the power from this is the ashtray lighter all right so that's soldered in shrink tube put this all back together all right well that's installed she'll the idea what that is that it will record every time I'm driving so this uh this is what's this what the footage of it looks like [Music] [Music] I moved this camp for a few months ago and this guy just called me asking if I wanted it and I remember the thing being pretty nice so let's uh he said free so let's go grab that all right so here it is yeah I got a new pickup file cutting anything first if we need to cut something we will [Music] a little bit more hair more help keep it calm and this thing out oh there we go all right well I guess that's kind of neat for the price usually what you gotta look out of knees like go around everywhere just checking all of the ceilings this almost looks like this has been repaired here but you're looking for soft spots usually in the corners first clean with the floor look for soft spots in the floor like here usually the back of them like this one's starting to get a little soggy but it's not but here's this floor is a little soft right here not falling through it yet but it was a generator done like that [Music] what the frig is work and these are expensive on these work auto gas AC oh yeah okay good work definitely makes a generator kick on I think it works I don't know what the heat oh wait the AC on Oh generator does not like the AC okay all right well my friend says he wants us so he's on his way over here to get it stop now they're off yeah well put it where they're on but the fridge seems like it's working how about this thing that's laying up power there we go FM dog stuff all right well he seemed pretty excited to get that so all right well this video pretty much covers the first four or five months own in this truck so this definitely seems like this is gonna be a nice work truck I didn't fill them every time I drove the thing but I have been using it plenty and with its diesel engine and standard transmission this is a very nice truck to drive so it will be in plenty of other videos being up with that new trailer I got for this is a very nice thing to move the smaller equipment around and I may put a plow on this but I don't want to rust it out the plan is to fix this one I think this just needs the intake manifold gasket and valve seals because it runs it just doesn't have any power and it's burning at a ton of oil but other than that even though this thing looks rough this is a good truck and I just want to use it for plowing because I don't want to wreck this white one plowing with it alright so I got to move an excavator to a job right now so let's go work on that [Music] [Music] [Music]

Best part was him pulling his other truck from the mud. That older Dodge really kicked ass over the homeowners fancy toy. Rebuilding that diesel was money well spent.
