I'm all for a formula style race car. But I feel like he started talking about an apocalypse build and like, the conversation hiccuped and he started talking about a completely different build. I don't see how a car that won't go over a speed bump will be an apocalypse car.

This is great. SEMA is all about ingenuity, not so much reality and function. Build something cool that runs and drives. I'll be following along.

So hot take but I don’t like this build for several reason.

  1. The off-road corvette was one of my favorite builds. It’s wild he is just gonna ruin that instead of finding a crashed f body and stealing the engine from that.

  2. An Indy car isn’t an apocalypse car. I don’t think any elaboration is necessary

  3. The dimensions of this are laughable and it will both look really silly and also drive poorly. There’s a reason the Ariel atom and Miata are often chosen to make exocage race cars. It should be short and nimble like a lotus Elise.

At the end of the day it’s Chris’s build and I’m gonna watch regardless but this idea seems beyond silly

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I can’t stand these “apocalypse” builds

Oh no! You mentioned “BatMan”; let’s pray they don’t steal this car from you!

I think what he means (and he explained it poorly) is "Apocalypse Car is made from the junk left over after the apocalypse" not neccessarily something that's useful in one.

So, what kinda shit can I find after the world has ended? I'll grab an engine from here, suspension from there, slap on some metal panels.

At least thats what I think he meant.

hey what's up everybody welcome back to another episode of beers for build I'm very excited because today we are kicking off our apocalypse build series I'm gonna start with my bill but after this we will also unveil Oscars build and then Kyle's build everybody got new cars it's a really fun premise that we're doing you know everything's kind of a mess right now so we figured let's build some really fun apocalypse style cars so today I'm gonna be introducing you to my car and then I'm gonna get started on building it and we're not starting with a lot so kind of start from scratch stay tuned before we get started today there will there will not there will not be a sponsor today's not a sponsored episode but I do want to point out that some of our previous episodes were deleted and because of that our sponsors did not get a fair amount of exposure based on the you know the agreement that we had so going forward there is going to be some making things right on my part for our sponsors and we'll be talking about their companies in further episodes so to you guys it will look like more advertising but just please know that these are companies that supported us through what we just went through they're really really cool about it and they were happy to let us make things right so we can continue having a great working relationship going forward so I'm very proud to say that they are our sponsors and they're so cool and it's a very positive thing so let's get started so a lot of you guys may be sitting that thing in like Chris like what what is an apocalypse car what is that what does that mean well it's just loosely defined I would call it as a car that looks like it was built after the apocalypse after the world ends everything falls apart and and it kind of scrap stuff together to build an awesome car so we've done this in the past with the g35 came out pretty good we only had seven days to build this car so we could have gone a little bit deeper with the theming and stuff like that but it wasn't good it was a good good first shot at it so the guys and I were talking outside of the shop we were planning on building drag racing cars right now but drag strips are closed everything that's going on in the world feels like chaos so we figured like let's build cars that fit the theme so we decided that we would take on the challenge of all building apocalypse cars but a big catch to it is that we all decided that we have to build cars using scraps or mainly parts from other projects or other cars that we have around the shop that aren't being used so on this show we buy a lot of different things and a lot of them you don't even see on camera and they're just they've just kind of been lying around or we have builds that have been neglected and we decided like let's use those as the base for all of our projects and you'll see that later in Oscars car and you'll see that later in Kyle's car my car I am using the off-road c5 Corvette that we built a while back in probably about two years ago now 35 inch off-road tires on it all that type of stuff it's a really good powertrain and I'm going to use that that's my parts car get a definitely going to be using the engine and a bunch of other parts off of that car to build my car but it is not gonna be an off-road car definitely not to be far from it I won't even be able to go over like a medium sized rock so I did the c5 as my kind of like parts car and then I got thinking about what I wanted to do and I've always had this dream to try and build a mid-engine single seater car like a single seater race car basically normally you see in my open wheeled based off of the Corvette powertrain so a Corvette has an engine up front they use a torque tube going all the way back and then they connect to a trans axle in the back if you connect the engine straight to the trans axle in the back it creates a really really long setup so you couldn't use that in something like a Porsche or a Lamborghini or Ferrari it's just too damn long but I mean a single seater mid-engine race car and they actually normally like some of the cars that run Lamar like the LMP cars and stuff like that they have this just really really long back in so I figured if I could design a car that had a really really long back end the drivers start really kind of far up front I could I could have this that I could make this work it'd be insanely like fun and reliable and the parts would be really really cheap because if anything broke it's just an LS with the Corvette trans and that Corvette trans is used all over the place in other applications too so I got really jazzed on the idea and I designed it and here are some rough renderings so I'm not great at 3d modeling and I'm definitely not great at rendering these things out so I'm just spinning them around to show you guys kind of the angles and let the light bounce off of it in different ways once we get started I will definitely have some of my friends that are artists do better real world renders but you guys can get a look at what this thing is going to look like it's inspired by single seater racecars mixed with inspiration from fighter jets and inspiration from the Batmobile and inspiration from stealth bombers and an inspiration from futuristic armored vehicles with flat paneling and stuff like that so I'm really really excited about this now what we don't have on here is any of the kind of apocalypse touch right this isn't gonna be a super clean build and I say this every time and then every time we go to SEMA with a super clean build it's never what I planned but this one won't be and I have another artist that's working right now to kind of apply more like graphics and grunge and different and and his amazing feel to this thing so you guys can kind of get a better picture but this is the base thing that I need to build and then the rest of the stuff you know the rough edges and the markings that will come with either use or just you know building stuff wrong but on top of that we're gonna be doing like an artistic style painting of distressed paint and things like that that they would use in movies to make things look like they're battle worn it's gonna be a really really fun cool learning process for us here the cars dimensions are absolutely insane so let's hope I can build this thing it's as its as long as a as a Range Rover and it's it's only just a hair above three feet tall when it's on the ground and we're not using air suspension on this at all so I can't go over any like speed humps I think I'll make it over a bump a hump it's gonna have a cockpit like a fighter jet it's gonna be able to open and I'm also gonna have optional glass that I didn't show you guys in case I want it but I have a feeling it's gonna be very scary to be in this thing and a little bit claustrophobic so I might be driving without the glass when I get started it's gonna have lasers cuz I feel like in the future cars are gonna have a lot more lasers and I've been nerd out about lasers lately so definitely gonna put some lows in there and I have a few other fun tricks up my sleeve that I'm really excited to show you guys so you guys know B is for build we're always trying to be unique be different work outside of the box a little bit and push ourselves and I feel like this build takes all of those boxes and I'm really really excited to start this journey have you guys come along with us the other apocalypse builds are a little bit shorter term projects so I'm going to be working on this for the first probably one to two months while those guys are working too and as those guys wrap up their cars which we will show you along the way you know we're gonna film episodes and air up so do the other guys cars but once they start to wrap up they're gonna come join in because this car it's just got a lot more detail that needs to go into it to be ready for SEMA thing I really like about this thing is we're basically just taking a lot of Corvette parts off of a Corvette and building the craziest thing I could ever imagine out of it in a way that it was never meant to do and it's gonna be phenomenal alright enough talking let's get down to it this build has a lot to do on the computer because that's how I engineered everything but I engineered everything using an app that's made more for art than it is for engineering so yeah I'll have to deal with that first thing I'm going to do is take our 3d model here and I'm gonna remove all the bodywork so all that's left is the frame and the engine and transmission placement these are all down to scale I'm gonna isolate those things I'm gonna start looking at the angles and the dimensions of my frame so I can start kind of sketching those out on paper get my dimensions and angles down and then we could start cutting some frame rails all right you guys just saw me in the computer pulling all the measurements I kind of just really roughly sketched them out took my measurements down and my degrees of angles like this one frame rail is the size like this is a hundred and eight inches that's a whole entire Mustang wheelbase it's pretty crazy how long this car is so let's go over the frame rail material here's our frame material I think I bought extra this is two by four with a Oh 8 three wall I believe it's a little bit thin wall but with the amount of roll caging that we're gonna have supporting all this it should be totally fine so let's get it cut to shape [Applause] [Applause] hey I cut some frame rails there's a little extra length on the back and a lot of extra link on the front I mean maybe I shouldn't have something like that just for precautions sake the middle section right here is all dialed in so this was a this was interestingly difficult to make sure I made all the like pie cuts the right way and and then we kept the seam on the inside on both of these rails throughout so at least so they match so that's pretty cool to this next thing I got to do lay down some guidelines I think I'm gonna use masking tape for this on the floor I got to clean the floor really thoroughly so there's nothing underneath these things making them wobble or anything like that lay down some guidelines that match up with my measurements and the dimensions that I have so I can lay these things out perfectly straight and then I'm gonna start welding them together [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is really cool so this is the base piece like the main structural piece of the cars frame all put together all of these like little ladder bar things that you see in there those are just supports their temporary they're gonna be removed in the long run but this is to help us keep everything square and not moving at all I'm very proud of this because it is like dead nuts accurate square the measurements are all straight the gaps are all the same these these rails are exactly parallel which was not an easy task but it you know the time was well spent so that's really really cool we used our handy dandy bathroom scales and this thing weighs 111 pounds with the supports in it so that's it that's a pretty good starting point for a frame and a chassis now we have a lot of other stuff in the next episode that we're going to be building off of here so that back end will slot into our sub frames from the Corvette that back end is the right width up here is skinnier because of the appearance of the vehicle you can tell it's skinnier in the front so we're gonna be building in the next episode pieces that come out here run along straight and then come back in and then that piece slots in to the control arm set up for the c5 Corvette as well so we got a frame I'm really excited I'm really proud of this this is a really good start zipper start alright guys that is where we're gonna call this episode in the next episode I'm actually gonna unveil Oscars new project car and then we're gonna unveil Kyle's new project car as well we all three have project cars all three going after the apocalypse theme and somewhat subtle differences in the way that we're going to design our cars but it's going to be a great series of building three cars at once and I hope you guys will join us for all of them it's gonna be a little tricky but we're gonna try and make it as seamless as possible in the next episode for this thing we are gonna finish building out this main main section of the frames what I'll call it before we start integrating roll cages and other supports driver cockpits and stuff like that and we will have it on its suspension I don't know if you guys see it there in the background we got the suspension here it's gonna be a roller it will be on full suspension with four wheels and tires hubs brake rotors brake calipers all that stuff will be on the vehicle I think it'll be a vehicle at that point not just a collection of metal on the ground it's gonna be some cool stuff I hope you guys tune in if you're not already subscribed make sure you but thank you guys all so much for all of the support I hope you're excited for this new series on ps4 build see you guys soon [Music]
