hey what up friend my name is Cole Sager I'm a full-time CrossFit Games athlete and this year will mark my sixth appearance at the CrossFit Games I do the vast majority of my training here in the garage so as you can probably imagine I spent a lot of time in here with that being said I wanted to give you some tips and insight on how genesee and I have made our garage gym space as effective as possible to help us train hard let's go [Music] [Music] to start I wanted to make one thing very clear having an epic looking garage gym isn't what's gonna get you amazing results simplicity can be extremely potent now if you want to build out a really cool garage gym I wanna help guide you in creating that but having really nice dumbbell racks colorful bumper plates and the nicest rogue barbells isn't what's gonna get you amazing results it's you that's gonna do that have a super close friend that I have just loved watching him build out his garage gym I think the thing I love most about it is how patient and responsible he's been throughout it his garage gym started off with the jump rope and a couple kettlebells and then over the last several years he saved up he's added a barbell on plates I'm gonna pull a bar and a rig and then an echo bike all in the meantime he made the most of what he had at the time and he's gotten incredible results because of the discipline he had along the way doesn't take a lot simplicity is potent but if you're looking to build out a really nice gym or just even upgrade the one that you currently have I wanted to give you some ideas that have been helpful and effective in helping me train for the CrossFit Games and make my garage space as effective as possible these are some things that I would definitely do again tip number one choose quality flooring we went with a three-quarter inch rubber horse stall mat we with this direction for the purpose of protecting the foundation as much as possible but also helping with reverb throughout the house for when we drop barbells you want to choose the right density you can see here we can get a lot of like bend in our mat you can kind of like even pinch it a little bit and get some flex if you have to dent of a mat it's not gonna absorb enough of the vibration but ones like these they are bouncy they absorb a lot of that you can find these mats for about forty dollars a piece these are four by six when we eventually have a bigger space and a shop will use the eight millimeter rollout flooring just to get rid of this scenes before this garage setting these are great you can move them out into the Sun and well you know this leads me in to tip number two maximize your FLORIST a floorspace is the most valuable thing in your garage savor it our space is about 550 square feet and every decision that we have made has been to maximize the floor space that we have the biggest for space dealers are rigs storage units and specialty equipment I mean how are you gonna do bar facing burpees if you don't have any floor space so some of the things you can do is hang things on the wall or be willing to move your cardio equipment around when you need to use a certain space with all the cool inventions these days there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to maximize your space and still be able to fit your car in your garage a good example of this is what we did with the barbells in the wall rather than store them vertically that would eat up space here put them on the wall stay that space one of the other things we did with the storage unit was adjust the height of what things were so we could get another layer and use the space underneath it so these aren't hanging around in other areas this is pretty thanks Rob that brings us to tip number three choose your rig carefully it's pretty sturdy rigs eat up floor space but there's a lot of ways around that you have a lot of options from fold-out rigs squat cages or wall mounts we personally went for a wall mount rig and got 30-inch cross beams in order to pull the rig in this is what we feel that is the the most comfortable minimum distance we need in order to do all the gymnastic movements as well as in a 12-foot space allows us to still park the Tacoma in the garage this is also a pretty sturdy option because we've been able to bolt it into the wall and then also hold it into the ground through the mats into the cement in the concrete tip number four leverage what you have specialty pieces of equipment are really sweet but they take up a lot of space in the crowd you things like ghd's air runners yokes bag sleds all of those things they aren't usually used frequent enough to be at the top of your list you can take a box and convert that into a GHD rope has a pretty sweet setup like that I consider checking that out if you're looking to add a GHD to your space the air runner is nice but you can run outside or even put the treadmill up in a spare room that you have it doesn't have to be something that's in your garage it takes up a lot of space just be mindful when considering these things are they really gonna be used that often or are they just gonna sit taking up valuable real estate and when you want to get to something else you have to constantly move it out of the way when you start moving a 200 pound sandbag every day it starts to get really old trust me on that one a few other things I feel like we've done really well in the garage was utilized storage space we've made sure that things are easy to get to take in and out utilizing wall space from the barbells where we placed the pegboard and the handstand push up wall we use a really thin sheet of wood on here to protect the wall from what it may or may not have put a hole in the wall in the butt go there some of the other things we've also done is change the lighting we used to have little light bulbs that just came standard so we switch these out for shop lights there it's a lot brighter it just creates a much nicer environment to be in it used to get pretty dungeon e in here with those old little screwin light bulb lights light bulbs light the light bulb lights we added a heater this has been crucial to our survival my favorite piece the gym she'll just stand here in the winter and just like huddle in the heat but I think one winter we had the garage before we had to hear the garage got down like 27 degrees during the winter and that was just a miserable time you probably had like three coats on I think anyways it gets cold in the winter just make sure you have a heater you're gonna really like it and then also having a whiteboard that's just good whiteboard space that's centrally located and a clock that is visible from as many angles as possible and then add your personal touches that's my favorite part making your space and that leads me into my final tip find some inspiration in your personal touches the quote on the back wall isn't just because it looks cool in pictures for the gram the quote is meant to remind me that this is a place in the space for inspiration and aspiration I come in here to work hard and I want to be reminded of why I'm in here in the first place it's been very important for us to create a space that we wanted to be in from changing the lights adding a heater and the personal touches we've made this a space that we want to come trained in be mindful of that when you're creating your space the worst garage gyms are the ones that are rarely used if it's really cool equipment that's gonna get you in the garage then save up and get some cool equipment if it's having really nice and clean and tidy space and make sure you tidy up every day before you leave and if it's murals of Adam touching fingers with God and that's what gets you going heck then paint it on the wall actually kind of a cool idea I don't know it could be like a picture of me touching fingers with you whatever it is find it and create it this is a space that's meant to help you grow to challenge yourself in and to serve other people with some of the most impactful moments in somebody's life can happen here in the garage but you got to make sure that you create it so with that being said stop dreaming of your epic garage gym go take action let's make it happen I'm out [Music] a van just drove by very slowly looking at me on vloggers these days [Music]
