the Zelda series has its share of both iconic and fan favorite locations whether it be due to the music gameplay or style one of the most common areas I hear of is the forest temple from ocarina of time of course an individual's favorite location doesn't have to be a dungeon a few of mine are lorule castle linear ooo desert and breadth of the wilds Elden volcano however another favorite of mine is the final location within the already mentioned Zelda game Hyrule Castle not gonna lie it's mainly due to the music and atmosphere the Zelda series has seen its share of Hyrule Castle designs but none have been to the scale we see and breath of the wild with multiple pathways and rooms littered with enemies and chests it comes to no surprise that people view this as the final dungeon of the game it's also very unique compared to the older versions since many parts of the structure are built into the rock it sits on some portions of the library can be seen from the outside while the rest resides within the face of the rocky cliffs around the castle this is something that to my knowledge hasn't been done before in a Zelda game but the strangest part about this structure isn't what's found in the castle but below it there are several passageways that lead into different parts of the dungeon one of them leads to the docks which happens to be a location of Hyrule Castle shrine and then there's the tunnels below that consists of minecart tracks two of these can be found within the castle one that leads up to both the water pump room and lockup and the East passage that connects to the library and houses a stone talus mini-boss but this raises an interesting question why are mines located beneath the castle it's the one thing that feels at a place well that and the laboratory where you fight calamity Ganon which by the way according to master works was an astral observatory we'll talk a bit more about that later on speaking of the master works book also referred to as creating a champion there's nothing in it about the Hyrule Castle mines which is very strange since both the book and game are packed with small details here and there that's why in this episode I'm going to go over hyrule castle as a whole and piece together this mystery given what we do know it shouldn't come as a surprise that hyrule castle is massive we'll have to think of this as one giant puzzle find out how these areas work with the story and we should get a logical answer and what better way than to see what this book does tell us pages 234 to 255 will be very useful since a talk solely about the castle in fact we are given the following quote from the first page the castles complex interior construction includes underground caverns and passageways most likely built to defend the castle should the exterior defense be compromised Hyrule Castle is in many ways a fortress the book goes as far to describe it as a natural stronghold against monsters and other invaders this is why it's built into the very foundation it sits upon and the interior matches this with its many passageways snaking through the multiple rooms and buildings it's a lot to take in however we are given enough information to piece it all together there's two distinct types of passageways that are used by certain individuals inside the massive castle our area is used primarily by soldiers and others used by the royal family the construction materials and decorations make it apparent which areas are intended for use by which party we can divide the castle into two different sections areas that are used by the soldiers and areas used by the royal family of Hyrule locations consisting of big hallways lined with red carpet would be associated with those close to the royal family or even guests meanwhile the smaller passageways were taken by the soldiers or Knights these two types of locations intercept in multiple times probably to allow troops to traverse the castle without crowding the main hallways reserved for those of the royal bloodline another way to notice what areas are used by who is to look at the wall decor rooms reserved from the higher class have decor that is similar to the Royal Guard gear paired with two red flags meanwhile the area's used mostly by soldiers will have something akin to what we see in the Royal chambers but instead resembling soldier or night gear with a single blue flag each one is found where you'd expect the guard chamber contains the soldiers weapons decorations while the hallway used by the royal family have royal weapons decorations rooms used primarily by the soldiers consist of stone floors and walls all supported by wooden beams it's certainly not as fancy as rooms saved for guests and the royal family though we can assume that this area looked a lot better a hundred years ago directly below Zelda's tower is the water-pump room which connects to one of the main halls however malleus blocks this hallway from connecting to the reception room one side of this room leads to the observation room while the doorway on the opposite side is inaccessible because of the rubble out of every room in the castle one we cannot explore in the present day is the Great Hall however I may have an idea as to where it would be located within the structure aside from the blocked entrance at the reception room there are two other tunnels that lead to dead ends thanks to debris if we look at the map all three of them would intersect at a certain point it's possible that they all led to the Great Hall a room not seen from the game we can only imagine how it may have looked from the concept art in the master works book one area I would like to briefly mention is the lockup this should look familiar to anyone who decided to get the Hylian Shield as it's the reward for defeating astound locks I got my own small theory related to the specific room this doll knocks was most likely a he knocks that was captured and restrained within the room evidence that suggests this or the chains found on the ground as well as hanging off the ceiling given what is on the stone tablet this monster was most likely used as a combat test for soldiers who wanted to become Knights and their reward for slaying the Beast was a Hylian Shield of course with the passing of a hundred years the he knocks died and became a stile knocks but how does this all connect to the mines if you recall master work suggested that the passageways and underground caverns were built to defend the caf so this adds up with what we see in the game as soldiers were able to move freely via small tunnels connecting many rooms of the castle so does this mean that the mines below serve a similar purpose well that may have been the case if it wasn't for a few factors there are some other areas I haven't mentioned yet all of which are connected to the library one is the docks which masterworks suggests was used to transport goods as well as a means of escape if some emergency were to arise I'd say it would exist solely for the latter reason as the tunnel leading to the docks is hidden behind a secret bookcase it was clearly built with the intention to be unnoticeable and I doubt they would transfer goods through the library second is the king study however nothing is worth noting for this place and then there's the final passageway directly across the one leading to the docks you can't get far into this area since the rest is blocked off by rubble but what's interesting is the exposed part of what looks to be some sort of sheikah technology well it resembles the columns surrounding the castle it can't be related since all five of them are nowhere near the library but if you've seen my 10 unsolved mysteries episode you know that this is most likely the exterior walls of the laboratory it's the only logical conclusion as using the map shows that it's pointed to under the sanctum as players know this is where the final battle takes place with knowledge of the story I assumed that this tunnel was the result of excavations for the sheikah technology a hundred years prior what I didn't know was that master works does go over this room and it turns out that this was indeed an excavation site not only that but the book confirms that this wall is a part of a laboratory there are traces of excavation visible in the library which reveals the wall of the astral observatory this is important because it proves that areas of the castle were made as a result of the excavation of ancient technology we are told repeatedly that hyrule castle was the source of most sheikah related experiments a good example is memory 12 as zelda observes the progress made by the royal family to control the guardians there's also the incident where a guardian went berserk during testing and was stopped by a young girl 8 who used a pot lid to deflect the blast it's very likely this happened at the castle what's interesting is how masterwork speaks of a settlement called royal ancient lab ruins to the left of hyrule castle it is thought that these ruins represent the ancient relic research facility that was under the direct control of hyrule castle but only the outer walls remain there is no trace of the building's interior let alone any research materials the thoroughness of its destruction feels intentional huh that last part is pretty interesting more evidence to prove hyrule castle was used to research ancient technology comes from Robbie's memoirs he mentions how pure it was using the guidance stone at the castle prior to transporting it to the lab this along with previous connections to the tunnel we see at the library leads me to believe that the mines below the castle are remnants of a large-scale excavation for sheekha technology not only that but I can tell you what they were looking for the five columns that were rumored to exist and where all of the guardians were stored Zelda mentions them in her research notes and it's obvious that all attempts to locate them were fruitless which would make sense since the ancient mechanisms were much farther away all of the tunnels dug stayed rather close to the proximity of the castle more proof of the mines serving this purpose comes from what we find in them one of the tunnels contained an open room with several decayed Guardians half buried in the ground these could have originated from the columns however plenty of them were excavated prior to the great calamity as seen from Rome's cutscene in fact it's heavily implied that they were found at the castle it makes sense of the royal family would excavate around the castle if this is what they found the strangest part about all of this still has to be the one tunnel behind the library you'd think that the revelation of a strange looking wall would be a major discovery yet no one mentions this not even Zelda did they already know of the astral observatories existence was it nothing worth writing about that brings us to the last part of this analysis masterworks does refer to the laboratory as an astral observatory in fact there's a whole section about it that I forgot to bring up in my ten breath of the wild mysteries at it's a pretty big chunk of text that I won't bother reading right now though feel free to pause the video and take a look for anyone who does have the book it's on page 255 even though it's called an observatory many including me have speculated as to whether this area has another purpose I did find a quote within the book that heavily implies that she can use this place to research celestial bodies so yeah it's most likely just an observatory this does mean that for some odd reason this ancient tribe was obsessed with stars and constellations it might very well be why the Hat no and Accola techlabs have giant telescopes perhaps the sheikah use celestial bodies as a form of language or something of course that is a baseless claim and I know I've talked about this multiple times but I am convinced that an elevator was used to access his laboratory just like the shrines but I've been thinking rather than this elevator going down what if the only entrance to this area is from the top I don't know how to explain it in words but notice link when he falls down into the arena it's a cylinder shaped tunnel that bottlenecks into a bigger room now imagine if the floor was a circular elevator that went up to the sanction it would be just the right shape this would mean that for some unexplained reason the royal family blocked off the entrance to the observatory by building a proper floor it would explain how it was easily broken when calamity Gannon broke free but as always this is just a theory or theories I guess anyways that's all for me I apologize for the delay in videos I've kind of been addicted to persona 5 for the past couple weeks I do plan on making a few videos on that though it shouldn't interfere with any Zelda uploads if there's anything you want me to talk about regarding breadth of the wild 2 or Zelda in general then let me know in the comments special thanks to all of my patrons as you are all amazing links to my Twitter patreon and discord will be down below as always never feel obligated to become a patreon as your continued support here is more than enough thanks again for watching and I'll see you all later [Music]
