Body Language Analysis - Tom Hanks

as it's Nick here and in this video I want to do a quick body language breakdown of Tom Hanks on Conan's show now I love Conan because I have how easily you can see people's body language change in response to something happening on camera what you're gonna see in this interview is Tom Hanks will screw up a couple times Conan will screw up a couple times and every time after their screw up or any time the audience doesn't laugh or they feel a little bit more nervous you're gonna see pronounced pacification behaviors in their feet you're gonna see it in posture readjustments and you're also gonna see it in Conan's hands so without further ado let's see what we're looking at at this reputation which I'm sure be devil's you but you're such a nice guy and I have spent a lot of time with you more than you've wanted you are you are a very nice fellow but I suspect what are you doing are you new to show business just about to storm off your show got a mic yourself yes all right so what just happened well several things really I'm gonna walk you guys through it just because I think it's important to be able to spot these types of behavioural changes now right around here maybe about seven or eight seconds or so you can see that Tom Hanks checks out the lead camera showing what the screen currently looks like so right over here he's listening to Kona's joke he's thinking about he's gonna say next right over here his eyes move over to the camera he sees the fact that his callers are not in his jacket he thinks oh crap let me fix my collar so what does he do he moves his hands up he starts fixing his collar and in doing so he screws up and he drops his label mic right there now you think something like this would faze Conan but you can only very barely see it as he continues fumbling with the lip bone Mike you see a small Polish readjustment from Konar right there and it's such a minor behavior but you see it because it took a couple seconds for Conan to react and say oh crap Tom Hanks just screwed up boom that polished readjustment was very very natural and most people won't be able to see it the bigger and more obvious one you'll be able to see is Tom Hanks right here saying crap I just screwed up now he's a little bit more nervous and anxious he's partially adjusting as a pacifier behavior you can also see a move to suit jacket in which is a very common male pacifying behavior all right let's move on corners around here you can see there Tom Hanks is continuing to look at that same lead TV screen and in doing so he's like okay let me just posture adjust here a tiny bit of nervousness anxiety pops in and you can see his eyes actually gravitate naturally back towards that screen several times north of course the interview now keep mine most people would be able to spot this most people at you know zero to thirty seconds would think meant Tom Hanks looks charming and charismatic even for screwing up but you can indeed see a couple of those little lines have worried on his face and and throughout the way that he acts so moving on let's see what happens next angry is there an angry Tom Hanks that by saying is I don't like people taking advantage of my good nature and when that happen is a code there's a code word in the family that when I use these these words let me get this straight that means I've gone off yeah that's I've gone off the deep end that's sort of like is that like dad talk let me get this straight well it's also for like let me get let me get this straight you were supposed to hold this table and we're ten minutes late and so you gave it away right let me get this straight I I try to use it in places where I look those are uptown problems with sure yeah but I like that your I don't like that your example was about a reservation alright back there we saw something else happen we saw a cone and posture readjust a little bit and start playing with his hands this right here is a common pacifying behavior believe it or not you see it exactly when his eyes are back looking at the lead camera the reason he did this at least my belief in the reason that he did this is because that joke didn't necessarily elicit too many laughs and obviously the job of the people on Conan and Conan himself is to make the audience laugh make the others generally have a good time so either he miss forecast of this joke maybe he missed hold it her it just didn't land as well as he was hoping it would have I try to use it in places where I look those are uptown problems with yeah I don't like that your example was about a reservation they didn't hold yeah you can also see Conan after I believe this is a second or third joke that hasn't really hit too hard with the audience start to play with his left hand I mean he's scratching what looks like his forefinger there with his thumb which is also a very common pacifying behavior but watch what he does next spleen was meant for me let me get this straight it was a Chucky Cheese and a party and gave away our table yeah just because that person's name was Aloysius as well [Laughter] there were two Aloysius is there I don't know you got screwed yeah but that wasn't when I would I get mad I pull out they let let me get this straight like if I have to like let somebody go mm-hmm like I will I will use thee let's get this straight that rug was given to me by the Dalai Lama and you send it in for cleaning your up a picture I do that kind of stuff okay so what just happened here Tom Hanks said what was very obviously meant to be a joke very few people laughed he got a pretty piss-poor reaction from the crowd to be completely honest and that's okay because I personally really think the joke was that funny and what do we see happen Conan laughs on cue because they'd likely had a conversation about how this Kurt how they're rather they likely had a bit of pre-recorded you know scripted bits on what the joke that Tom Hanks would say I would be in what joke Conan would say would be and so on and so first hakoda knew that this is coming when he sees that the joke doesn't hit look what happens with his leg it instantly starts bobbing up and down and notice the second the audience laughs it stops let's play through that one more time doesn't hit which starts bother audience starts laughing they laugh incredibly loud obviously that joke it's what happened to these examples are horrible you are digging yourself a terrible hole Tom show business my ass so guys let that be a quick lesson to you any time you're waiting for let's say a joke to land or something like that it's usually very perceptible in your behavior also people that are historically incredibly confident both Tom Hanks here on the left and Conan on the right still show very pronounced indicators of pacification you can see that night and day with Conan's foot stopping tapping the second that he hears of the joke landed okay pressures off audience is clearly
