well hey there idiots welcome back to observe and i hope you're having a brilliant holiday today in honor of the holiday itself today is going to be centered around both a highly requested video and a giveaway so first for the video i'm going to be reacting to the christmas special during the show lie to me this is a season 2 episode 8 special centered around christmas time itself i felt it was appropriate and since many of you have asked a lot of questions about this show i figured i might as well do another video on it i've already done one more in the past so if you would like to be able to go and see that go and search through the playlist again also in regards to the giveaway i'll give you some details on how you might be able to enter to win 100 worth of merch from my merch shop customized to you i'll reach out to you after you're drawn and then you'll be able to kind of select whatever you like up to 100 from the shop itself this is the best way i can think of to give a christmas gift back to you but let's go ahead and just roll that [Music] intro all right for those of you who don't know what the show lie to me is i heavily suggest you go and watch it however it's pretty limited on its availability i had to find it on youtube and i just had to buy all three seasons so that's the best way that you can do that or you can buy individual episodes if you like but if you enjoy this style of content that you see here on observe you will enjoy the show lie to me a little bit of the history of lie to me itself it's centered around the real life researcher and scientist dr paul ekman and his study in the realm of nonverbal communication dr paul ekman is a huge influence here on the channel and you can see multiple of his books up there on the shelf behind me i have relied on his research often and have used it as a springing board for my own research as well so in this show cal lightman is based off of dr paul ekman and he has been shipped overseas in order to provide a nonverbal read for the us military i'm going to go through this segment here and talk about the techniques that he's using how they actually work in real life and give you my overall thoughts and opinions towards the very end as well as the details on that giveaway but for now let's dive into the video itself you believe in santa claus okay right off the bat i'm gonna go ahead and talk about the technique that cal is using in this area so he's using a shock question right off the bat to be able to unsettle the person to whom he's speaking this person was taken prisoners so he's used to a certain flow of questioning that would show up regularly in an interrogation sort of situation like this so when cal asked the question do you believe in santa claus it unsettles him and makes his nonverbal communication more likely to be accurate this is something that i'm not able to do often here on the channel because i am reacting and analyzing a set footage i can't ask any questions i can't push where i would like to that's all extremely limited however when you have full rain like cal does here it enables you to be able to do some techniques that help open the efficiency of the reed itself up cheers i'm also going to set a little bit more of this scene here one when he asked that question i do want to address it the actor that is portraying this prisoner here flashes an expression that cal says is hope or his team says is hope and while that could be true it is actually multiple different expressions as this actor is trying to portray multiple different feelings that this prisoner is feeling at the time that is pain frustration anguish but when you see this more neutral expression slip in that you see here they're calling this hope that could be seen as hope so it's fairly accurate but it's not the clean cut expression of hope hope looks like different things to many people so what i would actually turn this as would be surprise disbelief and possibly a little bit of relief as well all of this combined kind of adds up to hope say hello to folks back home [Music] i'm serious say hello to folks back home hello okay so during this time cal is still orchestrating this person to deliver the most accurate nonverbal read he possibly can during this instance he doesn't have all of the assets that he would normally have and i understand the limitations in this area so he's trying to ask another question that can help inspire and reveal more of how this person emotes how they reveal non-verbally and during this time he's very forceful with it he doesn't give the person a chance to think or to possibly concoct a lie both emotionally and verbally so he forces the person to react and it lets this expression of pain and grief slip through on the soldier's face that is once again another technique that can be used as this act of pushing and hurrying a person along because as a person has time they will be able to concoct a more convincing lie the more time a person has the more convincing their lie will be so when cal is pushing him this way that makes that less possible so that's the technique that he's using here it's a real life technique and it is actually very effective well he felt that deep sadness at the mention of home what are those paper snowflakes and lemon asked him if he believed in santa claus i saw a flash of hope once again there's that reference to the flash of hope this is where the show really does embellish a little bit more it makes things more simplistic so that the audience who might not be really fluent in nonverbal communication and expression reading they can look at and be like okay i see i see how that works and it's just more enjoyable it's not a college essay it is after all a tv show so they're really kind of dumbing down some of the expressions that they're seeing in the complexity area it's still an excellent show let's keep watching goes on for you franco what where's home for you franco 1276 bayview baltimore maryland all right so during this point if i had been in cal shoes and somebody responded that quickly to that sort of question without any thought without any look of recollection that is a sign of a rehearsed answer as soon as somebody could lock eyes and just rattle off that sort of complex of an answer that indicates rehearsal that could be a sign of a lie so if i were in his shoes this would be an immediate red flag for me i would keep my eye on that so to speak throughout the rest of the read and the interrogation that i would be performing so that i can see if anything else doesn't line up also since we do know that that could be a lie we can use the body language centered around that little cluster to hopefully detect other lies in the future left out a street address like you memorized it by heart i i live with my aunt aunt wendy i'm sorry wendy perryman my aunt is that supposed to mean something to me or my aunt but if you keep saying my aunt i don't know why in this situation it's been so long since i've actually seen this show however what the actor's nonverbal communication is displaying it's odd that he's verbally repeating but during that time he's also getting frustrated and those expressions and micro expressions are spilling across his face showing his frustration and anger with cal not picking up on whatever hint he's trying to drop here bay view avenue bayview terrace boulevard street what so what cal's doing at this moment is he's pushing for details in an already rehearsed story so this person rattled off this address very quickly as if it had been rehearsed which could indicate a lie so cows picked up on that and he wants to see how much he can push that are there any breaking points in that specific little possible lie so when he's asking is it an avenue is it a street is it a boulevard what what are we talking about here he's trying to force this person to slip up so during that time he didn't answer nearly as quickly the prisoner didn't answer nearly as quickly and he does this flash of frustration and perhaps a little bit of uncertainty with the lip compression in there and he says avenue and it's not as certain or as rehearsed as before so as a nonverbal analyst looking at that situation this is another red flag now it's more of a certainty that the rehearsed answer before was a lie and not just memorized because there's this detail that should also be clearly remembered and isn't remembered so now cal is seeing this as a quite possible lie and he wants to make note of that bay view road baltimore all right and then so his team is able to through remote connection go ahead and search that to kind of fact check it and they find out yeah this this isn't the truth it's it's road there's a lie here he's not actually super certain as to what he's saying it's been memorized and that's that's kind of the benefit of having a team and that's why i'm working on figuring out how i can expand the team here on observe as well because i would like to be able to see this sort of work done more in real life and perhaps with a little bit more realistic science behind it than just the the movie adaptation and the natives pronounce it you know i'm not buying much if any of the whole aid worker aunt wendy story i mean why lie about your aunt wendy unless it's part of some cover-up some what is it cia oh all right so during that time he mentioned cia and the person does a dry swallow and then he flashes a little tiny flash of a grimace or perhaps a contempt expression disgust expression it's defined by the moving of the corners of the mouth upwards and this can be lopsided in contempt or in disgust or anger it's that group that cluster of emotions that he kind of draws out from this person by this line of questioning if you notice cal is not being gentle with his questioning he's being very upfront and very abrasive because he doesn't want the person to feel comfortable enough to be able to lie well he wants them to be uncomfortable emotionally and possibly even a little bit physically as he's very close in his bubble to be able to make it to where his brain can't process enough to create a convincing lie that's what's happening here those are those techniques that he's using and they're very effective techniques in real life if you want to be able to get the truth out of somebody invade their personal space a little bit when asking very very straightforward questions it makes it to where it interrupts their psychological processing and they're more likely to slip up if they try to lie oh they struck a nerve all right moving on how do you know why give up that information because i'm an american not like you on the expression of the soldier's face here he does this pursed lip expression also combined with a head tilt and a compression of his lips as well this is all a sign of withheld negative feelings coupled with some other emotions in there that kind of gives you this vibe of him having a little bit of attitude towards cal and if i were in cal's shoes this would just add to my repertoire of nonverbal understanding of the person i'm talking to xcia rogue lunatic i mean whatever it is any idiot can see that you you've grown some deep hatred of all things uncle sam you know i think i think we can pause here and we can see the expression of contempt on the actor's face again who is representing his hatred of the american government and cal is once again being very abrasive with his questioning this is intentional this is unsettling for the person themselves making it more likely that their nonverbal communication will shine through authentically rather than a chance for the person to concoct some deceit you know i think i think you're just a traitor trying to save his own skin what's she telling once again a very large expression of discomfort from the soldier themselves this could be because of the physical state of everything if they're a prisoner of war it's pretty uncomfortable but it's also a sign of emotional discomfort as well this close to the border with pakistan the taliban never moves more than 10 miles with prisoners in the first 48 hours all right so i'm going to speak a little bit about the body language of aggression that is being shown from the prisoner or the soldier he stands up and this is where cal wanted him to be he wanted to break through that shell so when he gets to this point the soldier stands up and invades cal's personal space and he's doing some aggressive moves with his chin with the elevation of the chin showing the neck showing i'm not afraid of you and i'm angry these are all common things but it's a genuine reaction that cal's pushing for this can happen in real life as well this is exactly what the body language analyst aka cal is going for in this specific scenario and only at night the place i told these soldiers about it's the safest place to hide that close to where the marines were captured so they're about to talk about something that i bring up here constantly on the channel is they're going to talk about his verbiage he's very confident and part of it you can see that through his body language like i said with all those aggressive confident displays and then he also has a giveaway in his words where he uses the word safest that implies that there's more locations now as a nonverbal analyst even though this is a verbal thing i would be an idiot and cow would be an idiot and the team would be an idiot to not make note of that he just gave away that there's other locations so you have to pay attention to the rest of the body language everybody always thinks that you should only notice the body language and that's really a narrow-minded and very shallow approach to nonverbal reading to only address the body language is pretty limiting i try to do it on episodes of faces so that you can see what body language itself really does show but in real life if that's all you're watching it's a very very limiting practice you have to observe and keep in mind more things than just the body language that includes the words they're saying and how they say them that includes tone timber and the projection of the voice as well he said the first half of that with extreme confidence because it's probably true but he used the word safest inferring that the taliban have more than one place they hide out where else might the taliban be hiding nowhere so he does a lip compression here which is a sign of biting back information or biting back emotions and then he raises both shoulders and says nowhere but his head is congruent that's excellent his head is synchronized with his words nowhere but the other two are the red flag and that would be a lack of sincerity or a lack of confidence in the things that are being said so i as a nonverbal analyst if i saw somebody doing that i would be all but positive that he's lying in that instance that's a very strong indicator of a lack of sincerity or confidence in what was being said cow picks up on the same thing and it's called out here as well your shoulder makes the difference all call sign standby for go he's lying yeah he's sending you to the wrong locations so cal saying this and he's saying it very confidently because it's just so much more cool to watch on television when the hero is super super confident but here in a second he's going to say something that's extremely important but isn't really emphasized throughout the rest of the show because it really doesn't lend to this very ostentatious viewability that the show kind of needs to sell this science to the general public it can be a very dry science so they're working hard to find a way to make it more interesting for just the general public and that's by selling it as more guaranteed than it is however he's about to address something important here over target area now you're sure he's lying yeah nah well 70 percent yeah best he's sending you to an empty compound at worst it's an ambush right so he says it he says 70 and that's because the truth is about nonverbal communication it's 70 to 80 accurate on the better side of things sometimes you could get a little bit better than that and sometimes you're going to get a little bit worse than that but that's the average good side of body language is it's going to hit about 70 to 80 percent accuracy and cal brings that up here and it's something that i try to bring up here on the channel a lot as well is that if anybody's selling the fact that they know something for certain they're wrong they're lying they can't there has to be more than just the body language because it has that margin 30 to 20 margin for error and that's just how the science itself works because we still don't understand the human brain and mind enough to understand what its physical representations are telling us if you can't understand the mind and brain completely there's no way that you can understand the non-verbal communication completely either what's your name seventy percent yeah it's not exact science if it was you'd have been loving by now wouldn't you hey zero charlie one do you copy over abort do it mode now abort say again abort mission you better be right dr leitman abort mission all right so that's the end of this little clip and even in just that short three and a half minutes of film we were able to really pull a lot of real life techniques practices and lessons from it and that's one of the reasons that i actually genuinely like this show a lot it's a good show and it's based off of very very good practices and techniques just as you can see maybe embellished and simplified a little bit to make it more consumable but that is the show lie to me there are three seasons i feel like it was cut short a little bit early i think they could have gotten a little bit more than three seasons out of it and if you do enjoy the stuff on this channel i do suggest you go and check out that show it's excellent now in regards to the giveaway in case you haven't looked already and i know this is going to come as a shock to you but there is a link in the description below there's different ways that you can get entries by following different links and doing different things and the more entries you get the more likely you are to be able to receive the 100 giveaway and once you are drawn i will do a random drawing a week from the upload and then i give back to you and thank you for everything that you've done for me on this channel and the support that you've shown christmas is a really big time of year for giving and being thankful for things and i wanted to be able to do that for you in the best way that i can this year has been absolutely insane for me it's been so cool to see the channel go from roughly 20 000 subscribers to almost 230 000 in a few months it's been astounding and i'm so excited to honestly see so many people being interested in the actual science behind body language rather than just these ostentatious people who feel like they need to use the words body language to kind of share their own opinions i really try to keep it as factual as i can on here and if i am going to stray away from the facts i really try to let you know that i'm straying into opinion side rather than facts so i appreciate your desire to understand this entire science and i hope to be able to continue to bring more and more excellent content out to you throughout the years to come but but without further ado that's all that i've got for the day my name is logan and you have been oh so awesome as you always are and i will see you in the next video cheers guys [Music]
