I like this video but I also disagree with it quite a bit. Mainly I don't agree with the basic argument made about the lack of shields being a huge reason why Bloodborne is better to a newcomer. To me the big advantage it has over the other souls games here is it does away with a ton of the RPG elements. It isn't fun to sit in a menu min-maxing equip loads, damage, durability, number of casts, etc. Bloodborne just streamlines the whole thing and by not forcing the player to commit to something like infusions the whole game ends up feeling much less restrictive even though there are objectively less options.

On top of that by committing the combat to a much smaller selection of styles from the previous games there is less of a balancing issue. In the other souls games it's not uncommon to run into a boss or area that is built in such a way that it is either too easy or too difficult for the player's current build. It's just not possible to balance the game so a shield + spear, pure sorcerer, and naked rolling man with club have the same level of challenge for the boss or even the game in general. In DS3 for instance I remember early on most players claimed that the Deacon's of the Deep were too easy but a small minority of players struggled. Pure casters and melee characters with no sweeping attack can have a ton of trouble with the boss because it was designed almost perfectly (although probably not intentionally) to be a pain for them. Then looking at Aldrich the exact opposite problem happens he's not a particularly hard boss but in my opinion he was about par for a souls boss. However with Vow of Silence he loses the ability to do almost all of his attacks which is just insane.

And finally (on this subject at least) in my own personal experience I don't think there's anything inherently less fun about shields. DS3 was the first of the games I beat completely and I did it the way this video claims is most fun, no shield and dodging. It was a complete blast and yeah beating bosses did give a huge rush of excitement and adrenaline. However then I played DS2 and just got bored and didn't have fun playing the same way. I ended up starting over and focusing on greatshields which made the game far more fun and made me think about it in a new way. Instead of the instinctual practice of dodging I ended up focusing more on spacing and openings for my attacks. It felt just as satisfying to beat the lost sinner on a level 2 bonfire with a greatshield as it did to beat the abyss watchers and nameless king with just dodging.
