if you think you know Bill bellich think again in 2009 he granted unprecedented access into his personal life and his football [Music] life from the locker room to the meeting room the office to the field at home and on the road at work and at play meet Bill bellich you going to be a football player when you grow up today is the best day of your life believe you might be the finest quarterback produced in the last 10 years best decision this organization has ever made that's all that's all I need fortunately for me I didn't lose my life didn't lose my job football convinc that life is a team game it's a game for me nobody can ever tell you was this the final game on the sideline for a great coach I want to thank you very much for making my day in the Sun so memorable [Music] [Music] he perfect [Music] huh love those net Blu such excitement dropped it he well and the fishing till next color yeah some Serenity nobody worried about third and long out here next couple hours just kind of wrap it up on N Tucket this is it so going to pull the boat in pack up head back to foxb players coming tomorrow training camp starts and uh I'll be ready for him for Bill bich this is NFL training camp number 35 it's where the circle of his Football Life Begins each [Music] year what's the story in this W Ryan he's a personality you know anything about him you know I think he'll get his guys to play I think they'll play hard for him you like this team got a good team how was this seven years or eight years n nine holy man is this the best group of players on paper what's up there I mean talent wise no we got to do it yeah we got to execute I'm going to call out the situation pay attention I don't care whether you're a part of it or not first and 10 plus 50 alert for what okay they have no timeouts the ball's on a one yd line okay so tell me what's going to happen here all right we got 40 seconds no timeouts need a field goal 2 minute we good on everything fellas no questions we're good those situations are just as good for the coaches as they are for the players it makes everybody think about you know what do I want to call here like Brady he's thinking one thing and Billy he's thinking something and you want them both to be thinking the same thing you know make them respect the quick counts then they'll have to respect the Motions but you know we can't spend all day on shifting and motion on every play we're not doing that all right I don't want to be talking about that during the game I'm set my piece on that now but I'm just saying hey don't worry about if we got to make an adjustment on it you know like these guys need to be able to do that yeah tired like to play against you two guys I love that with just one play okay you want to know something I haven't Bill he's really relaxed which makes me happy which tells me he thinks we've accomplished something with can't okay everybody up here's what we got either one of you either one of you catches the punt and I'll take this for the night off so that would be vulmer you and prior okay get back there at Midfield Cass can you catch we'll see in a minut no chance he looks good don't he don't bet Che Co I'm pretty pck myself I never thought he'd catch that I swear to God I never thought he'd catch that no meeting no meetings no curfew vulmer got you out of it that was the play of the camp wasn't it Cass nice catch buddy number like 80 something nice catch buddy thank coach nice catch I wasn't counting on him catching that shoot for Bill bellich coaching never ends try to throw these with just one hitch whether he's teaching one of his players instead of like double hitching I just try to throw on one hit or his son Brian let's see how that feels a nice ball nice ball that's it we're in a new season look I understand it's not the AFC Championship game I understand that here's where we're all at it's our first competitive opportunity of the year it's our first time to go out and compete against a very good opponent I understand it's not a game in the standings let me tell you something if you're playing in a game or coaching in the game it means something means something to me means something to you it's an opportunity for us to establish our level of performance and build on it next week all right so it's football time fellas let's get into it it is game one of the preseason for the 2009 version of Bill bich New England [Music] Patriots don't stand Too Close like they throw something at me they might miss and hit you are you going to keep the quarterback stuff today or no yeah you are okay all right well how about also maybe just keeping a sheet of paper there underneath it and uh you know as things come up I might ask you to write them down and I'll get you get them from you after the game something that happens so Welker no go he's out okay he went through warm ups and he said didn't feel good so okay so uh Wes are you a erw today yeah okay eat ride and warm up yeah how's your Camp been so far good we're you know we'll see got you got Tom Brady back so that's you know a big plus I imagine sure of course we're going to keep him safe tonight yeah take good care of him hopefully we block him and all eyes will be focused on Tom Brady of the Patriots he missed all of last season when he suffered that devastating knee injury in the opener against Kansas City it's about the only thing I can cheer for in Philadelphia is a national an good to have you back out here yeah it's good to be back have a good year Edelman comes in motion right to left direct snap to Brady L right there wide open fires left wide open TouchDown Brady has looked sharp nice razor Billy nice drive that's a nice drive buddy nice drive the seventh round pick junian Edelman number 11 keep an eye on him this one is coming down to Edelman heads to the right to the 30 35 yd line 40 45 yd line 50 cuts to the left he's to the 40 he's going to take it to distance Julian Edelman the Patriot seventh round rookie grap pick this is Wes Welker in progress and he looks just like him on the field it's amazing hey Ernie what's that guy's name that played before l g you want to look at these or you want to wait until the next Wally yeah yeah you ever hear a w-e pip Wally what Wall-E pip uh-uh you never heard of him uh-uh well he played first base before Lou gar oh okay then Lou gar started like whatever it was 23 sou th000 straight games right yeah the little man that might be the return story no doubt hey you can have it man oh there you go way to compete way to compete we're looking at will in the 2009 preseason we're double covering this so you get the night off hell yeah ni sh Tom Bill bich team shows promise okay Lu all right thanks appreciate it all right man but they are still a work in progress all right fry wrri this stuff down easy Force signal offensive plays contain quarterback press the blitzes get more speed on the field and then red area like exclamation point like too slow too slow well the Patriots finished the preseason at three and one that was a bar burner the 53 man rosters will be set Saturday and then it's get ready for the start of the regular season a week from Monday some interesting decisions now that will have to be made by Bill belich in New England the Patriots losing another key player on defense the Pats traded five time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour to Oakland he's coming off a career best eight sack season so now that the Richard deal is done how how do we look at this thing with Vince what's the probability we can do this there see more thing getting done and the distinct possibility of the franchise tag has got the help time but they want a long-term deal that is where the leverage of the franchise tag do think comes in hand I mean the bottom line is he wants to be here he wants to be a patrion you know so and we want him here all right [Music] thanks so we got guys here from five decades yeah we got guys here who played in the [Music] 60s this is once every 50 years we better have a good time Heidi oh my goodness it's raining we love having celebrations here with you guys how are you pal okay we know what we're going to do let's go out there and do it aggressively and let's set the tempo early in the game all right like we didn't do last year go out there and around for a quarter against Kansas City and then see how it's going and it's the end of the first quarter and say oh gee looks like the regular season started unfortunately uh our coach and the present day player ERS is focused on Buffalo and doesn't want any distraction from that and so I think all of you will understand that there's nothing wrong in fact you should be excited when you make a play hell look at all the work you've put into it all the time that you've spent and practice of putting into it and to go out there in a game competitively and execute it well and make a play you should be excited about it and your teammates should be excited too and the coach of the 50th Anniversary team the only head coach to win three Super Bowls in a foure span Patriots head coach Bill bich so you watch the tape here and you see when we're playing with energy and when we're playing with emotion and when we're not nice Play Ty can't even see one guy saying good hit walk back to the Huddle and it's a god it looks like we don't even care I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night at chill thank you we aren't good enough to play that way I don't know that anybody is so Gary you know it's a good play just don't really register with anybody else I probably should have had it last night and then Brady yeah you know now you know Bill gives him the guilt trip so just look at this right here do you think we were ready to play against Denver last year Monday night it's so obvious it's so visible and when you can show that picture visually to your opponent that's what intimidation is that's the look right there fellas it's going to be a long night let's show the Buffalo Bills that this is a football team it's not a bunch of guys running around out there in the same Jersey this is a football team and and for 60 minutes going to have to deal with all of us and it's going to be a long night all right good luck have a good year all right good evening everyone from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro it's time for the season opener for the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills as I watch this game tonight very closely I'll watch Tom Brady's left knee that was the injured knee it's going to take time to mentally overcome the [Music] [Applause] injury [Music] [Applause] Tom look settle down now buddy step into the throw okay right hands throw to Kevin out here I got drilled when I threw it did you get hit on that yeah he was blitzing I tried to blob it over him cuz the guy was standing right in right in his face like the one to it was right in his hands that was over his head oh that one yeah just you know just step into it okay yeah all right Brady fires to the end zone touchdown Benjamin Watson 206 to go in the game and the Patriots are within range now good drive buddy good drive Kelvin has very little return set up and chooses to take it out anyway and gets hit hard by Merryweather and the ball came [Applause] out who's got it the Patriots D all right so look we got plenty of time out we got three timeouts can we go f right and get the tight end up on the line right 40 alert 50 let's go baby let's go Brady fires and drou Benjamin Watson Tom Brady you are Tom Terrific and the Patriots survive nice job heav just like he used to be wow in the NFL if you don't stay a step ahead of your opponent you lose ground quickly prior to week two Bill bich studies a familiar Foe and prepares for his first game against their new head coach I never came here to kiss bill bellich che's you know rings I came to you know to to win and when they come here that second week of the Season we'll we'll see just from a factual standpoint has anyone ever actually kissed your rings uh I don't think so I don't think so where are your rings oh they're in a box somewhere okay two of belich che's five Super Bowl rings were earned as an assistant with the Giants where he spent 12 years his final game at the stadium before it will be demolished is a trip down memory lane run whenever you need to run to get there cuz they ain't going to beat us running the ball okay Lawrence's Locker would be sitting here with a box like a big box that you pack dishes in probably about 3 ft High you know full of fan mail and the end of his rookie year Romeo Cornell's daughter went through it you know for Lawrence there's like $75,000 in checks in there you know game checks and appearance checks and stuff like that we flush him out laterally Lawrence can get him that's good that's what we want to do right there Lawrence fall asleep in some meetings yeah I'd say he did yeah yep it's a small room I'm just as I stand here it just it's surprising to me how small it is and this was the Coach's Locker Room see that's all changed well it used to be like four lockers here it was who was it Romeo me somebody I think Tom coflin Parcels don't you start giving me any check your ass will be out first you know look there was a good mutual respect there and and he was the boss so you know I would tell him bill this is what you know this what I think we should do and sometimes he would be okay with it like yeah that's great and then there's other times he'd be well well Bill give it to him again Bill give it to him again damn you know I'd say well you know okay we don't have to do that you know what do you want to do like what's the alternative usually his response was something like well I'll just tell you what you're doing is is screwed up you know this is screwed up how do you want to change it I don't know but it's just screwed up and you need to get it fixed so these are the old rocket ball courts and so there was some great there was I had some great workouts in here used to play Jennings and Parcels on a regular and Randy Dean Randy Dean was the best like nobody could be Randy Dean who who want meing you know I usually I probably beat Bill more than he beat me and then of course soon as it was over he'd you know light into about four cigarettes so what's the best memory in here I a lot of them you know one one would be getting carried off the field after the Washington uh NFC Championship game in ' 86 we won 17 nothing we're going to the Super Bowl and next thing you know two guys got you up on their shoulders and you know nothing you can do about it nothing you want to do about it you know it was just it was just a great it was fun you know it's on the front page of the New York Times you know all your friends all your relatives everybody saw it it must have 100 copies of it you think about that and who you were back then give have a different perspective on it yeah 20 years later um I probably wouldn't have thought it would turn out like this that I'd be standing here you know like this um you know I was just trying to establish my coaching career be a good coach win some games and um yeah we want a lot of them here this is a great it's a great organization yeah it's hard not to get choked up of that damn I spent a lot of hours in that room come in here Saturday morning ride the bike go through three or four games of the next team we were going to play it's a lot of lot of hours here I loved it here I loved it here belich che's appreciation for the past is matched only by his anticipation of the future and unfortunately for him his last game in the Meadowlands plays out exactly how he feared it could when he met with his staff the night before I think ry's going to you know we're going to see what they want to do about Randy you know just a question of really what you know what they're going to do with Reas if they are trying to match up I think we want to be careful about sending them out to the right because that's where probably Rivas is going to line up this is Rivas down here on 81 Randy Moss Brady going to go deep for Moss Grievous is there and picked it off in the secondary it seams they run the seams and they'll run C on a double move we can't let that number two guy get down a seam and kill us like they did on it last year it's going to be those seams Dean I'm telling you we got to take away the X Dean cuz that's kri Sanchez looks right throws a slant right caught by kri breaks a tackle in the open field at the 30 right side of the 20 he's down inside the 15 and brought down at the 11 yd line we can't leave Keller uncovered coming off the line and if he's under Center that's where it's going let's make sure that that doesn't happen Sanchez with time throwing Corner the end on touchdown Dustin Keller that's two down the scene that's what we were talking about all week on that coverage like if we can just take those four or five things away right there we're going to be okay okay that's it in a building where he experiened so much joy Bill bich leaves the Meadowlands a final time with a most unpleasant [Applause] [Music] memory look I'm not trying to give you a big pep talk or anything here but I'm just being honest with you it's the fourth game of the season okay we're playing a Ravens but I'm just telling you now this was the problem last year we win 11 games and we're not in the playoffs why because we can't beat the other good teams in the AFC we couldn't beat Pittsburgh we couldn't beat Indianapolis we couldn't beat Miami and we couldn't beat San Diego Baltimore they're one of the teams that's going to be in it for the long haul you know it I know it they know it I mean I think we definitely got to be prepared for that you got to be prepared for somebody just saying you know we're going to take Randy out of the game lble him throw whoever else you want to yeah and make them beat us and and it might be these guys yeah you know Foxworth was I think he's fairly instinctive and then Ed I think we know about Ed our favorite Ed Read's Ed read covers up for a lot of stuff everything he does he does as at an exceptional level yeah he looks like he's guessing more than he ever has just heart which is saying something yeah yep but boy he's got a burst and you know he's crouching down low back there you know playing playing real low um but you know he changes it up you can't I mean it's just so obvious when he's reading a quarterback yeah those receivers will run right past him and he never flinches yeah he doesn't even acknowledge Him and he's just reading a quarterback yeah he's always moving one thing about playing against Ed is you just you're always so aware of where he is it's almost you know it's not like he sneaks up on you or at least he can't sneak up on you but I remember we played him in the rain here 5 years ago mhm I mean every time you break the Huddle you're that's who you're looking at you're not going okay let's just snap the ball and you read this out you're going okay where's he at yeah yep he's on the quarterback he's on them doesn't even take this Vincent Jackson running right past him unbelievable you could put you know Julian on the inside cuz Ed's going to be driving yep you know and then when you break back out High to the flat flag if that corner starts running high for the backside post then you can throw the flag too oh oh you're saying let it dive on it and then bring it back out yeah yeah okay let Ed take it and then when Ed takes it then he then the Z whips it back to the right right right right I got you to the flag I got you and then Ed's kind of in no man's land then you have everything right then ry's in a tight split and then you can run him back on a cross across the field if it's like one cover right you know maybe have two plays like that in the plan mhm that take advantage of you know figuring out what they're running yeah it's a good idea yeah all right sounds good yeah we'll see you tomorrow I'm going to go see Billy for a little bit okay all right thank yep okay yep I'll be right behind you going in [Music] there [Music] hey Terry it's Bill belich it's um about 10:30 on Friday morning I just want to call in he tell congratulations on uh getting in the playoffs um we know the feeling of what it's like to have a decent year and and not qualify so just want to let you know that we're all behind you over here Patriots and I look forward to catching up with you down the road all right um talk to you later thanks Terry [Music] bye how it going coach you stay our hair today coach you're the best free safety that's ever played this game that I've seen you're awesome that play you made on that out pattern last week yeah middle of the field making a play on the out cut give me a break I look like the Pro Bowl all right good seeing you buddy I want you to keep an eye on Ed Reed today yeah okay how deep he's playing how well he's moving I got you Brady takes the snap here as the blitz gets rid of the football caught Andy Mar touchdown that's what I'm talking about Ed re came off the corner unblocked and it looked like he was going to hit him before he get the ball loose great job VI in the face of a blitz nice job that's the way we got to play him right there that's the way we got to play him Flo to throw looks fires right it is completed there for another first down made to Derek Mason aou on my face all day coach oh you Mason just why don't we talk after the game all right just shut the up can you look at the scoreboard 27-21 the Patriots lead try to hang on here fourth down and four for Baltimore at the Patriot 14 yd line with 32 seconds left to play in the game Flo takes the direct snap fires to the right and it's incomplete incomplete and the Patriots take over on down yes sir nice J the Patriots will come away with a tough win over a very good football team improving to three and one on the season look you guys did a lot of good things okay you did a few more than they did that's a good football team you beat a good team today all right we got to start winning on the road now we got to start winning on the road so let's come in this week and have a good week get ready for Denver enjoy this one we got to start winning on the road all [Music] right let's begin with the obvious here bill bich against the pupil now Josh McDaniels oh hey hey man how you doing now I know why it was such a pain in the ass to get ready for us yeah Hey listen let's make this a handshake and we'll just wave after the game all right you got it I'll talk to you later all right yeah thanks you know this is going to be a big ccus this week you know with Josh and me and the Patriots and you know you and all that all right so let's just get a few things straight here one Josh has been here does he know us yes obviously all right do we know them do we know what their offense is do we have any idea what they're running Bill how did you first come about meeting with Josh MC Daniels and how did that lead to working with him and what point could you see going up against Josh something you look forward to was there ever any time that you gave Josh some particular advice about that Josh and I talk you know on a fairly regular basis and but I I'll just keep those conversations private between Josh and I I think that's their personal nature and so that's that's the way I'll handle them hey coach how do good how you doing car doing well how about yourself doing good good uh talk looking sharp I know we just got to suffer through one more game coach one more game although I don't know I feel better about myself after seeing those down there I'm telling you those are hideous those are hide should have seen the they tried to put me in oh really yeah God so [Music] two minutes to go Brady with his specialty right before him look we got plenty of time here he got to get the ball in a field goal range we can't let them have it on first down it's Morris ball is out ball is out New England maintains POS possession on second down Brady knocked out and this time the Broncos appear to have it they do Matt Prader will attempt to win the game from 41 yds out the Snap the ball down the kick is up the kick is on the way the kick is good the Broncos win an overtime the prote has defeated the mentor Josh McDaniels is showing his emotion right [Applause] now I was bad football out there bad football bad coaching bad playing bad everything and the more critical it got the worse it was got the ball Midfield 2 minutes ago in the game need field goal and fumble it twice fumble ball twice started Wednesday you know then Wednesday practice is over and we to proce receivers go straight in right right do we stay up and throw Wednesday after practice with the receivers and PR no no cuz we got it down and we're all set we don't need we don't need any extra work that that sums it up right there for me really does now the sky limit there's no telling how good we can be I mean offensively all really would and we've seen this now twice really if you just take Moss away in deep part of the field and get down on Welker we're done we're done we can't run the ball we can't throw it to anybody else we're done it's a problem but from the guy who snaps the ball to the guy who has the ball to all the other guys on the field it's a problem across the board we got that job I'm talking to everybody we got to do a better job I'm just some bad coaching anybody got any other thoughts on the [Music] again [Music] we go out to practice we run the play we sit in meetings sometimes half asleep not really paying attention and then when the hits the fan and we got to have it we haven't been able to deliver that's the truth there's no wand away and it's not somebody else's problem it's your fault it's our fault and we're the only ones that can fix it the only thing I can do fellas and I'm going to do it is I'm going to put more pressure on you I'm going to put more pressure on you individually I'm put more pressure on you collectively because when we get into those situations we got to be able to handle them or I'm telling you it's going to be a long year because that's what it comes down to in this leag we're the only team in the National Football League that has not had a 20yd run or 40 yd pass we have not had one big play in five games in 350 snaps not one play there's no other team in a league that can say that we hit him in practice we'll hit him in the game there's a start that's what we need more of right there so tomorrow it's going to be kind of a nasty day oh really yeah rain wind the works I don't know if you want to go out there in a mess tomorrow but that's what it looks like for Sunday okay good idea looks like we're going to miss it today but doesn't sound like we're going to miss it Sunday but you know it kind of comes and goes here it would have been good to have it out here sure would have y could have practiced at 8 this morning we would have had plenty of it look we're playing the Titans all right that's the team we got to beat not the win but playing smart and playing into the conditions and using those to your advantage and knowing how the game changes and is affected by those conditions that's just just playing smart football I pulled out some plays here that I think are somewhat representative of the expected conditions today this is the ' 07 Jets game this game is probably the closest to the conditions that we're expecting today we're going into the wind right here plays like this where the quarterback can drive the ball down the field okay it don't take a lot of touch on the ball we're not afraid to make this throw Tom can get it down there you just keep keep running get behind the defense and we're going to throw a couple of these up [Music] there all right so this this weather is more of an equalizer [Music] kicking game little pass it it won't it will affect the kicking game and it might affect the passing an unexpected winter scene in Foxboro Massachusetts it been raining all day with force and it turned over to snow a couple of hours ago and it's certainly going to affect the way this game is played you know I really think we ought to not be afraid of it you know CU it'll be easier to throw than it will be to run cuz you can't get any movement on the line of scrimmage the lineman can't get any movement how's this look oh man this is a QB's dream right here yep they'll never rush in this Rellis the running back behind Brady takes the hand off tosses it back to Brady on a flea flicker fle flicker look at Randy he's wide open Bry look you throwing long and deep and touchdown R Great call Great throw stands in the pocket has time now starts to run left gets rid of the football downfield of the end zone caught Randy mooss touchdown that's what I'm talking about buddy you know bel's been saying to them they haven't had big plays re snap to Brady players at right complet the F on a scen go Kevin he's gone go finish it finish it 30 25 20 15 10 5 touchdown Kevin F oh Brady's going to have huge fantasy numbers today play action fake back to throw fires it down the right side Wide Open West going to walk into the end zone Brady takes the snap looks rifles it right weler touchdown and Brady has just done something this league has not seen before five in one quarter in in 15 minutes he alerted it I think third and one looking that to and has another touchdown touchdown passes in the game for me made some progress today 59 to nothing is that sick or what hey you ain't never seen 59 you're right about that all right so I can't talk about no more big plays guess that shut me the up right so Brian I'm all week I was yelling at these guys you know we're the only team that hasn't had a 40 ydd pass or a 20 yard run they got three in the first half 50 y the to win it for the Jets please it's a fake oh my God throws it in the air Danger and it's intercepted doesn't get any better than that I know winning like that and then the Jets losing on top so when you're sitting here today you know like 1:00 Dolphins kick off with the Jets do you have any interest in what's going on interested to see how that game comes out this some way both teams could lose but we erase that [Music] one did you get where it ended where do you end that's the only thing that matters in golf end in football yes Midway through the 2009 season bill bich and the Patriots are near the top of the leaderboard but in the second half of the season the coach will have some critical decisions to make you can say a lot of things about me as a coach one thing I'm not is scared I'm not afraid to go for it I'd be ready on fourth down here now it is short of the first down the coach take over I just can't get this team to play the way we need to play I just I can't do it so frustrating don't miss part two of Bill bich a football life I won't get mad I'll just get even previously on A Football Life next couple hours just kind of wrap it up on N Tucket this is it players come in tomorrow and uh I'll be ready for him it's our first time to go out and compete against a very good opponent don't stand Too Close like they throw something at me they might miss and hit you Baltimore is going to be in this thing the whole way the Patriots will come away with a tough win over a very good football team in 2009 Bill bich granted unprecedented access to his team halfway through the season they are 5- two and now part two you going to be a football player when you grow up M today is the of believe he might be the finest quarterback producing in the last 10 [Music] years I'm the best decision this organization has ever made that's all I need fortunately for me I didn't lose my life didn't lose my job football convinc me that life is a team game it's a game for me life nobody can ever tell you that was this the final game on the sideline for great I want to thank you very much for making my day in the Sun so [Music] [Music] [Music] memorable he's been loved he's been loved it's been sewn together he's had open heart surgery when did you know he was going to go into football as his profession from the time he was about two he just he loved everything that his dad did anything that Steve did he wanted to do Steve bich was a scout and coach for the Naval Academy football team for more than 30 years Bill spent his childhood following his father on the Annapolis campus he wasn't a pest he was there to learn you know like when my dad would show films over at the field house for the Scout report you know just kind of hang out then he didn't do anything that disrupted anything his father would have whed him no my job is to stay out of the way he love the Naval Academy we got the other kid from Navy you kind of paral of the Navy guys oh yeah I am I am I'll would never take guy for Army I'm telling you I couldn't I couldn't handle it I mean I can still you know hear the cleats you know cuz you wore the regular cleats over there and then they you know walk on the sidewalk and you know I I can hear the cleat walking on this this pavement right here Bill wore his own cleats as a member of the Annapolis High football team dur during the racially charged times of the late ' 60s you know it's a great thing about sports race didn't have anything to do with it and the coach is you know the coach is great all the racial stuff and all he didn't care anything about that it was it was never a factor everybody was accepted as part of the team based on what your commitment to the team was it was a great life experience so the stands right over there behind the trees that's it I mean really it looks the same to me like nothing's changed by the time I got out of high school I just that's all I'd known I didn't have a perspective on selfish players or guys that didn't want to do what they were supposed to do like that didn't exist didn't exist at the Naval Academy and it didn't exist at Annapolis you know when you grow up that way and that's all you see it influences you it influences your philosophy cuz it's all you know but no one influenced Bill bellich more than his father know he was demanding demanding of his players expected him to get a right right away say I'm more patient than he was he didn't have much patience sometimes that was good I saw my first football game in 1924 [Music] that's a long time ago it is it's kind of probably fortunate that and he was able to you know find football find coaching enjoy life as much as he did yeah I'd say it was real important that was a huge part of his life and he loved it you know and he loved it we're trying to from a team standpoint we're trying to have a Halloween party so you're not interested in that are you in what Halloween party well this what it is we come dressed as the devil no that's what we're doing it's well hey you'll get might win the damn prize trying to you know get us a little dj get us a roll the rank and you know have so have us a good night but like I said you're more than welcome or whatnot I'm sure if you invite the coaches they' all be there you think they would okay but if you don't want them no see I was because it's like for instance Halloween I mean we don't go out no more you know what I'm saying but we still have that it's a great holiday yeah you know so candy and Costo can you beat that right look at this guy wow man y'all crazy man yall [Music] [Applause] [Music] crazy [Music] just before you go to bed tonight you can watch this too let me just set the stage for you here after the Jets game the Dolphins put this out there okay they put it on their website so everybody can see this after the game we're a good football team and we're close to getting this thing done and we're three and0 in this Division and it still goes through us it still goes through us the division goes through Miami cor snap to Brady second down and one look shoots it long and deep right side Brandy Moss a onehanded grab by Moss that catch Brady steps up in the pocket fires over the middle caught at the 40 Y Line 45 with the 50 45 at the 40 there goes Randy Moss he's going to go but look for a touchdown Patriots win it by 10 yeah [Music] yeah all right let's be ready to go forth here on fourth down at some point I just I just want to make a point to the team you know whether we're on the goal line fourth and one or whether we're out in the field fourth and one I just you know I want to put the pressure on him see whether or not we can pick it up fourth and less than a yard at their own 25 Brady calling signals the Patriots rolling the dice here big time handoff comes to the right side and driving it to the 25 they did get the first down wow going forward on fourth and one at their own 25 the short yardage in our own end felt like we could get a yard um sure would have been pretty CR plenty of criticism if we didn't I know look fourth and one on a 20 yard line all right you can say a lot of things about me as a coach okay and I I'm sure you do and so do a lot of other people okay but I'm just telling you guys something one thing I'm not is scared now are we going to go for it every time it's Fourth Down on our own 20 yard line no I'm not saying that but I'm not afraid to go for it if you guys give me the confidence that we'll pick it up all right and that's the way I felt about this yesterday I felt better about us going for it than I did about giving them the ball back but I'm telling you if we call this you better get it third down and two for the Patriots from their own 28 yd line Billy i' be ready on fourth down here now I don't want to give these guys the ball back Brady in the shotgun third and two patriots their own 28 yd line direct snap to Brady fires to the near side it is incomplete and the Patriots are forced to punt with 208 to go in the game leading by just six the Colts are going to get the ball back oh well no wait a minute go and the Patriots are going to go forward on fourth down I can't believe this you know they tried it in that previous game in Foxboro and they were successful it is fourth down and two from their own 28 yd line all right look if it's a sh look if it's ay look delay game delay game okay it's a great play Tom all righty fourth down and two for the Patriots at their own 28 the ball game hanging in the balance F goes into the right side slot Brady takes the snap looks fires right it is caught at the 30 yd line and I don't think it's enough for a first down it is short of the first down the Colts take over all right let's go the Colts have it first and 10 at the Patriot 30 and now this ball game could be lost second and goal at the Patriot 2 Manning to throw and it is caught for a touchdown Payton Manning throws a two-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left all of that coming after the Patriots failed on Fourth and two from their own 28 yd line well they certainly handed that one over to the fs no question about it this one will be dissected in the newspapers and on the talk shows big time tomorrow and all week long may be all season long what did you make a bellich che's decision you have to punt the ball in that situation as much as you may respect Peyton Manning and his ability to go as much as you may doubt your defense you have got to play the percentages and punt the ball you just have to punt it there my decision there at the end was based on what I felt was best for the football team and our best chance to win okay whether you agree with it or disagree with it you know I'm sure everybody's got an opinion but I'm just telling you I did what I felt was best all right and it didn't work out and I'm not apologizing to anybody for being aggressive and trying to win that's what we're here for okay there's been some Fallout on you know now is there a lack of confidence in the team and all that bull which is total bull you guys think I don't have confidence in you I don't know what you guys are doing every day that doesn't matter the sign on the door when you walk out tonight read it read it it says ignore the noise that's the most important thing about this week right here ignore the noise I hope you believe it because it's the truth I'll always tell you the truth [Music] so Nick has all that been from the outside have they overloaded us it's either overload bill or they're just bringing a guy off of each side is there enough space to hit those uh to hit that inside to run it you're saying to run the ball inside yeah I'd have to look at it well let's take a look at it okay you have two timeouts remaining and they also have two yes if you want well I'll be standing back there if you want a timeout just hit me okay yes sir just let me know hard or not too hard all right Sanchez is in a shotgun he's got it back to throw stands in there fires to the left and it is intercepted take it go put it away 1510 five touchdown Lee Bon sorry yeah yeah sorry got a little excited about that one so the Patriots improved to S and three tough one next week next Monday night at New Orleans Against The Undefeated Saints looking forward to that one [Music] turn subfield Academy backup quarterback Brian bellich number three is accustomed to winning champ [Applause] championships all right we did it way to go yeah congratulations that was impressive this is awesome I'm getting any better than this three times Brian has celebrated with his father after Bill led the patriots to a Super Bowl victory the first of those titles came in this building good afternoon everyone from the Louisiana Super Dome it is Super Bowl 36 I remember we were standing over there at the two lane watching practice and we ran a quick out and we we hit it in practice and and we kind of said you know we're not going to be able to get that in the game because St Louis does a real good job with their coverage of what we call pick a fence putting everybody right on the goal line that's right thing 50 quick out go Z slam changed it then and said you know instead of run the out let's run the out and up cuz you know it's going to be tough to hit it right there on the goal line if we're you know like on a 78 yd line so made that adjustment after Friday practice P to the far side right Brady first and goal St Louis 8 yd line instead of running an out and having a quarterback throwing the ball right here with Defender right on him he ran the out turned up Brady drops back to throw looks fires right touchdown David touchdown David caught it in the back corner of the end zone was our only touchdown offensively and now Adam vinary can be the hero for the Patriots you know Adam's probably our best player uh you know on that team you know you got the game coming down to your best player 48 yd field goal attempt that's where you want it set to go snap ball down kick up kick is on the way and it's is just kind of ran out there to see if it was going to go through trying to get a good look at it out there it's gone it's gone and the Patriots are Super Bowl champions next thing I knew I turned around and Amanda was right there and then next thing a new lawyer came over and he was right there and and uh then the confetti came and uh it just went crazy it was surreal it was it was surreal not that we didn't expect a win we did but just the fact that it all you you know it all came together the way it did was just a miracle I love this place yeah some great memories here yeah great memories keep going back to throw is Breeze he flares it out to the right it is caught on the right and inside the 10 inside the five down and in touchdown fires down the middle the field wide open to the 50 he's going to go all the way for a touchdown now fires down the middle H touchdown you going to fire it deep down the middle C touchdown to the end zone touchdown re snap to Brady steps up looks fires down the field and is intercepted by tell you we got a long way to go got a long way to go I'm telling you right we just have no mental toughness we go on a road we have no mental toughness we can't play the game the way we need to play [Music] it said it just it's not them either it's totally us just totally have to find a way here be a tougher team when we get on the road down by number 59 ass it sure did I just can't get this team to play the way we need to play I just can't do it so frustrating we do it in spurts we just we just don't do it for four quarters no and the tougher it gets the less likely we are to do [Music] it Tackle by number 91 byon [Applause] drer [Music] [Music] know where he ises for the K now and he made me out I'm not sure he can make it couple things about that fight you know it was pretty obvious after one round that that this fight wasn't going to go all the way what you probably don't know is Hearns broke his hand in the first round broke his hand in the first round Haggler got a cut on his eye he knows he ain't going to make it through 12 rounds so what you got there is two guys competing their ass off both of them and there can only be one winner but they both gave the punches and they took them and they gave them and they took them and they gave them and they took them the point of the whole thing the point of the whole week competition getting up after you get knocked down not like these Club Fighters that just you know flail away for 15 20 seconds with no purpose at all let's get out there and compete at the top level that we're at all right everybody got the message all right hey Billy all right now we're running this on fourth down I'm not kicking a field goal here all right Scott no field goal no field goal it's now fourth down and one Patriots keep their offense on the field the hand off to Lawrence and he picks up a first down and now the Patriots will be able to run out the clock Panthers are out of timeouts that was a [Applause] struggle with three games remaining in the 2009 season new Eng land is winning but not dominating in the NFL winning is all that matters the Patriots still lead the division and are closing in on a playoff birth he's pushing up and and breaking out it be hard to double him on this one we hard to double him and you got on stop Dan copen snaps to Brady stands in fires to the end zone caught touchdown Randy MOS and and for Randy Moss his 10th touchdown reception we need a first down to win this game we need one first down that's what we need a third down play is going to be right here it's the only one we haven't used yet and it's still good third and six the the clock down to five and Brady throws for Welter first down to the 40 it's going to be enough to lift the New England Patriots to a 9 and5 record oh so I they sweated that one out like we always do against these guys since uh Randy has been here how has he changed were evolve as a player if he has it all in those years you get guys like Brady and Moss and guys like that that they get it at every level you know as I said before I mean he's the smartest receiver I've ever been around and he he not only knows what he's doing he knows what everybody else is doing he knows what the defense is doing and he usually knows what the quarterback's doing with the ball based on you know all that information that he compiles you know you coach players some guys see things they see everything some guys they see nothing some people have trouble with math other people have trouble with the English language I have trouble with both of them but you know that's there's all different strengths and weaknesses hey the TV's busted some people can walk in there and fix it you know I look at it all I see is wires TV VCR uh serious radio like whatever it is like all it all looks the same to me like I there it's just a bunch of wires there this thing it's not swapping in between this might be annoying for a second it's been annoying for more than a second y you you know what really pissed me off is what been like what a week maybe two weeks since daylight savings time and I can't like I I don't can't change the clock in my car oh I to call the dealer I had to call the dealer the first time I had to I can't you know like you hit menu you hit information you hit like whatever the is there you got to go through the freaking computer now you can't just you know and if there's should be something that you would say would be like clock but I'll be damned if I can find it there's no clock setting this week uh we referred to as uh the hat and t-shirt game we win we win the division we come back in the locker room be a hat and a t-shirt for you there division champs I understand what you know the holidays and all that fell we throw a lot into this season we got a lot of stay here and I expect us to prepare this week like it's a championship game which it is excuse me ready waiting the shotgun snap he's got it back to throw time time end zone touchdown Randy Morris to the left and he is down and in touchdown Sammy LS nice running why did you get in thaty to get you I'll be out for the year that was purposely done we wanted you in the middle buddy yeah I would have V up for the year the Jacksonville Jaguars trailing 35 nothing here early in the fourth six def of backs for New England trying to preserve that shut out R takes the snap back to throw and play action now being chased going to run with it he's at the 5 yd line and he's going to go into the end zone for the touchdown so that breaks the Patriots shutout hopes with 1241 to go in the football game the score of the Patriots 35 Jacksonville s hey look fellas go out there and start dancing around and he go straight down the field in five plays we ain't dancing until the damn game's over you understand that you play a defense for 60 minutes like a championship team supposed to play like a b of punks out there Play 60 Minutes at defense you understand that there's a price to pay when your coach pursues Perfection but the reward for the Patriots is their seventh division title in 9 years that's a nice job champ nice job nice job I can't remember the last time I was called a punk I can't remember 20 years ago 20 years ago conations take it [Applause] man sweetest you all right buddy I seen you ear what happened buddy I'm all right all right all right thanks that's good win great good win made feel better love that hat I love it man love it good to have it love that hat let's get some more all man congratulations Champions congratulations you earned it you earned it today that was a hell of a job and I know that we had you know a lot of people playing out there less than 100% a lot of guys sucked it up all week to practice and they go out there and play their ass all today here's one of [Applause] them as Christmas week concludes bill bich has everything he needs to celebrate with his family got your hat got your t-shirt we got a party going here up guys partying what's cooking sausage dog a that looks good and and the straw is like 2 feet long so you're drinking out you know like we're all sitting at our chairs drinking out of this thing such a good add okay all right thanks yeah all right um you think you're coming to Houston great I'll talk to you [Music] [Music] tomorrow hey you made any conclusions on that uh I think we probably still need to you know keep time bins out of this one I don't see any poting putting them out there I think Moss is a guy that I'm worried about and maybe wel or too you know I don't know how much how smart it would be to put him in there for another lit up get lit up another eight or 10 times like he usually does now we were saying they don't they M should I don't know I don't think we're really going to know how healthy he is or isn't until Wednesday okay so we'll just have to you know just have but even if he's healthy and even if Welker's healthy I think there's a point in this game where we want to we can just back off on him right right I mean those are two guys we can't really afford to lose no Edan in motion third down and four for Brady manin a good block right there this is a first down catch and run but uhoh and he was holding his knee Welker holding his knee Welker holding his knee after the 13 yd catch and run boy he held it almost without even being hit right there walking off very gingerly after taking a hit on the left knee what happened KNE [Applause] and the Patriots can ill afford to lose him did they take West in where they're just about to right here going on [Music] [Applause] the [Music] what you say to a guy like that hang in there with you but you I don't know if you really know what the extent of it is though it seems like everybody's got a big diagnosis on it but I I don't know that for sure did we get the results officially on 83 or yeah there a t and the MCL or just the not sure about that your reaction to a West Welker and you know what happened to him in the game's injury and maybe how that yeah we've covered that and we're you know we're we're off of Houston we're on to Baltimore so we'll players that we have out there we'll put together the best plan we can get our players prepared get them ready to go and uh I know that they'll all work hard to be ready for Sunday's game against Baltimore watch your reaction to a West weler and that's going to impact uh you know yeah we've already covered it yeah we've already covered it yeah we're done with that we're on we're on a balore so you don't want to say anything about Wes Welker lot of the fans I've already said it he's a great player and uh you know I know he'll work hard to get back as soon as he can as a followup can you talk a little bit about the uh that feeli you were quoted as saying that Turf down at the Reliance Stadium was some of the worst seen and just wondering um we're on to Baltimore we're done with the regular season we're this is postseason we're on the Baltimore well every Everybody saw that Wes weler get hurt on TV and that's kind of what that's on the fans Minds right now just wonder if you could just talk a little bit about it yeah I respect the fans and I respect you and and all that but right now we're on we're on to Houston I mean we're on to Baltimore we're on to the postseason we're done with the regular season games we have one sign around here right down here on a hall on the way to this meeting room from a guy named sunzoo it's his quote every battle is won before it's fought okay and it was made in 500 BC in China in that time there were a lot of different provinces and they fought each other and so you know China you got a lot of you got a lot of there in China okay I'm saying in terms of different different ways of fighting different terrain different weather different methods so they said okay look I want you to write a book here on war and how do we fight a good one you know so he picks out the things that are the most important things in fighting a war now look I'm not saying we're in a war here but this ain't the regular season okay where you play somebody in the next week okay we put it behind us and we play somebody else there's only one game next week for one of these two teams so it's a death match okay that's where we're at I'm not trying to over dramatize it but I'm just telling you understand how one stupid play one stupid penalty one mistake ends it for all of us good afternoon everyone from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro and the wildcard playoff game the Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens hey if it is us I hope it's you no that's how I feel too no doubt about it I hope it's us but can't be us well we're going to fight give you our best game and I know you'll do the same we'll see what happens yeah you got a good club you got a good club and of course everyone's going to be looking to see how the Patriots can make up the 10 catches per game that Wes Welker had given them and what a shame that he's not going to be able to play in this postseason the Patriots have won the toss have deferred so the Ravens will have first crack added offensively first and 10 from their own 17 the handoff comes to the tailback breaking across the 25 the 30 35 40 4550 he might take it all away Ray Rice goes 83 yds on the opening play of the game and the Patriots and the crowd stunned and and the score is Baltimore 7 the Patriots nothing wait damn the Baltimore Ravens have come out smoking on both offense and defense the ball's ripped out of his hands and recovered by the Ravens at the Patriots 17 yd line and so the Patriots are in Dire Straits right away in this one blacko the hand off to the fullback charging through Lon playe and he's under the end zone for a touchdown and the Baltimore Ravens have a two touchdown lead it's all running I mean it's all running one boot pass I mean until we do something about it they just keep handing the ball off second and goal to Patriot one yd line blacko calling signals flacko the hand off to the left and it is going to be down and in for a Baltimore touchdown Ray Rice scores his second touchdown of the game damn it and the Patriots are down three scores telling it that's B5 to play in the first quarter embarrassing play action fake by Brady has time to throw now fires it long and deep right side Sam Aken it is intercepted off the hands of aen oh no taken by Ed Reed at the 40 he's to the 35 and inside the 35 he laterals it off down the left side line to the 10 yd line and this game is out of control it's a disappointing man it has not been the Patriots Day yeah thanks no we didn't have it [Applause] today that's the ball game and that's the season a disaster for the Patriots and a 33-4 Baltimore [Music] route [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah that's that's a rough one you know you definitely miss a lot during football season though you know family stuff holidays and you know kids stuff when they're young and their games and World passes You by you know I have a hard time picturing not coaching football um at this point you know not I mean I I'll be like Mar Le and coaching when I'm in my 70s you don't have to worry about that but fortunately that's that's a few years off [Music] you know I mean I I enjoy doing what I'm doing I don't think that's going to last forever he's [Music] working [Music] in football as in life seasons change bill bich [Music] doesn't for the NFL's most successful modern day coach disappointing Winters plant the seeds for hopeful Summers it's very cyclical you know you tell me the month you give me the day of the week and the time and I can pretty much tell you what that day is going to be you know what I mean you're either in mini camp or you're getting ready for the draft or you're doing your offseason preparation work or you're in training camp or you're doing cut Downs or you're getting your team ready to for pre season games or you know whatever it is in July it's this when it comes to Bill bich che's Football Life the only thing he wants to change is the name of his boat got the boat when I came to New [Music] England then after we won an 01 it was three rings one for each of the Super Bowls and then you know throw three four rings and then after 0 four five rings so now it's five rings hoping to change it [Music] again
