oh my goodness look what I did look over here they are loving and hating that that's a mess hi welcome to another episode of daddy curbs farm this is a beekeeping episode and I got my buddy Charles with me Charles is going to be holding the camera and learning a little bit while he's out here we're gonna be taking honey off of the hives ready Charles yeah hey Charles if the video that you record gets a million views I'll give you ten bucks okay there we go ready Charles yes okay there's gonna be a lot of bees in just a minute okay cool you're okay with that yeah all right turn this up over here I don't expect to get any honey out of this one the Gretchen bee ranch hive is really just an inspection at this point it's a new hive I just want to see what kind of progress they're making you see that wax they're building on there they're preparing this plastic foundation oh look they're starting to put honey on that one if you can just get a shot down inside you can see all the bees they are putting honey up in here mostly what I'm concerned about is then building this top box out filling it up with comb and sometime in the middle of the season I'll be putting in a queen excluder on if they fill it up and putting it another box on top if not I'll just put that other put the top on it and then next year we can use these frames to do splits Gretchen beer and hive looks good now we're looking at the hive one split the shorter of the two right here and then hive one and the big guy on the end is hive to not your bad yet right oh yeah a little warm but there's no no bee activity although today is a lot nicer than last weekend it's there's a breeze I don't know what the temperature is today but it's definitely not in the hundreds like it was last weekend so this is the new box I put on last time it looks like they haven't done a lot of building but they have done some let me show you look at that beautiful see they're putting honey in there that's all honey I don't want to start taking honey off these smaller hives until I get the big hive taken care of so we may actually open it up next just to get honey off of it because it's getting too tall this one again it's looking pretty good I'm not gonna dig in and get a shot down in here lots of bees lots of honey lots of bees so well we might come back to this one but we're gonna close it up right now the bees are being especially calm right now we haven't had any activity coming out at us since the main mission today is to take some honey off let's go ahead and get in there this one's almost tall as I am oh they got that pretty good oh look at that can you get a shot over the top look in here that is a lot of nice looking honey I think they're all full well this one down here might not be us let me get up here on the brick taller than you now Charles oh yeah this one is still not this one's empty so we're gonna hang that over here just to give us some room they are building let me show you this building honey on that one so that looks very nice they're also building on this second or a third one let me show you that too so there's some honey on that side and some nice-looking honey on this side we have a little bit of a little bit of Burke home here what's gonna scrape that off we might take some of these frames but I want to get into some of those ones below some of those well that's very heavy very heavy look at that beautiful that one got a little bit dirty I'm not sure what what's going on with the top of that one let's get this Burke home off the bottom of this one - come on girls yeah they didn't like that if we weren't wearing face masks I'd let you taste that honey so that is a full frame right there that one can come out beautiful okay I think what we will do I'm gonna go get those two smaller boxes that have lids we're gonna go ahead and take some of these out of the top box one reason is it'll make it easier for me to move this top box because it won't be so heavy so let me go ahead and go get that I'm gonna put some of these really full ones I had Charles looking for my brush but it's in my pocket we're gonna put that down in here and I'm gonna put the lid over just to keep bees from theirs well that one is not done on that side so we're gonna leave it up here it's done you can see this one is really done on this side not so done on that side so we're just gonna leave it this one looks probably like it's full on both sides it's very heavy so yes that one looks great look at that and those are full I don't know if I'll be able to get five frames in that box this is another one that is mostly full on one side about half full on the second side this top box I'll be able to move we only got two good frames out of it you okay yeah is it the smoke getting to you you should quit that smoking this becomes a little bit awkward let's see if we can get two more two more out of here kind of nice standing on the bricks all right I'm gonna move I'm gonna get one of these frames out then that one is that's an empty frame right there so we're just gonna hang it this one looks full almost full that sides not capped and this side is only about half capped I'm not really sure what's going on with the brown cappings I haven't seen that before I'm gonna put this one over here and look at that that's that's all very dark cappings this one over here well now we have over there in that box frames that are have a lot of drawn comb and honey that one's not ready it's it's looking good there's a lot of good a lot of good honey a lot of good comb same thing with this one that one it has a lot of honey in it but not very much capped well they're being really good I thought you were gonna get in get to experience some some angry bees Charles oh alright it looks like the rest of this is looking about half full so we're gonna have to get two frames I think I have two frames over there we'll go ahead and move this one you okay yeah you're not too hot okay this one has I can tell just by looking at the top there's there they've drawn a lot here in the middle there's a lot of honey but the ends this I think this is the empty box I put on last time so there's still a lot of empty on the ends probably five frames empty so we're gonna move it without even digging around and we're gonna get into this box the one that's directly above the Queen excluder and see if we can get a few more frames of honey there see see now they're starting to buzz out a little bit let's see if we can get a few more few more frames in you probably only two more in this one because it's so these are so fat hmm oh my goodness look what I did look over here they are loving and hating that that's a mess it was stuck to that other frame doing okay yeah okay there's a good one there's a good one you don't like that part okay let's try to find one more good one in here and then that box will be ready to put in the truck today must just be a really good day because not only should the genetics be better but the weather is pretty good for them it's warm no there's no crazy clouds or wind yeah that box is ready okay I'm gonna go ahead and carry this into a truck to get it out of the way watch a lot of honey in that one that's heavy you want to turn the camera to yourself and vlog tell your experience I think I just like talked where this still yeah so my hat's kind of down I don't know if you could see that no if I'm holding the camera right but yeah I could still something when I also my hand right here it's a kind of exposed that's good as long as I keep my hand down he's doing good pop off your sleeve yeah you only fix it charles has small wrists of the the elastic in the band in the sleeve didn't stay on okay let's see if we give me five [Music] this one that's pretty good but they they really could build a little more on this one so I'm going to set it aside see if we can find one it's a little better one side is nice and full the other side could do a little better that's a good-looking frame oh honey right there I tried to make this fast without a lot of you know hard pushing hard on it but no matter what they don't like somebody in the comments mentioned that I need a different be brush well this is actually a different one from what I was using before because the one before had vinyl bristles and it was really stiff this is natural I think it's horsehair and so it feels a lot better but there was a comment that maybe I need a goose feather or something like that I don't know I'll have to look into that [Music] we'll go ahead and take that one and take this one too [Music] we try to shake this one sometimes if I have enough leverage in space [Music] sometimes it works I think we can get two more in there [Music] I know what that is [Music] that's interesting okay that one's not ready so we're gonna take we're gonna pull this off and then get into that bottom box as just as an inspection I might be able to take those full frames out of there and put them in here you see so the part I'm questioning is all this they don't really know kind of looks like like it looks kind of like there's the eyeballs of a drone looks like like heads and bodies yes this is the queen excluder this keeps the Queen downstairs because she's too big fit be parts and some beetles there's a beetle there's some beetles in there as well what's that the beetles don't kill bees necessarily but what they do is they get in and they they build their nest inside they lay eggs and the the larva beetle larva will start eating the wax and the honey and all that and it turns the inside of the hive into a gooey mess there's a lot of honey in here but I'd like to see the brood nest which is the baby bees when you feel that breeze that's nice I check to make sure there's nothing [Music] [Music] one side is honey this one has brood which is baby bees let's check those out [Music] got some drones on there those are the big burly lookin bees they do have I thought I saw some eggs but maybe not [Music] [Music] so they are building they're putting putting brood and honey nectar all right together this is in the second box don't you see that right there you know what that is I mean potentially someday that badges wheeze they're building to prepare maybe for something like they're looking as far as oh look at that those are queen cells those Queen cells so this hive is making a new queen and that one's open two of them are open so potentially two young Queens I've already come out you see those open ones so there's one two three four not opened and when we tore one open they potentially have two young Queens that are either in here or out doing their mating flight very interesting so I wonder what happened with the Queen that I purchased [Music] [Music] so if I had a new if I wanted to build a new hive right now I could put that frame in a new hive I might do that I might I might start is up here's honey this is nectar and then you can see the little yellow those are all full of pollen so this hive potentially in a few weeks could be very the genetics that start from that new queen [Music] there's a lot of honey allow a lot of pollen [Music] all right so what I'm what I'm feeling like possibly we could possibly Swift this high it's a little late in the season I think first weddings but that's honey and brood see the difference [Music] okay you smell that you know that smell is that is somebody just released the pheromone that says we're angry yep and normally after that smell you get a flare-up of bees didn't happen this time okay we're gonna go ahead and take this there's a lot of pollen and a lot of honey so we're gonna go ahead and take this for a short time they can't survive long term without bees themselves number pretty short life speed if they don't start replacing bees in the hive [Music] maybe either she died or she got hurt or I mean there's a lot of reasons why they might put a new queen in orbit or make a new queen bee just hanging out over there that's a bead party honey on this side we're going to figure out exactly how to put this one back together because I might want to take that one out and put it in a split there's not enough food box so I might have to get into the next box this has a lot of bees and some honey we're gonna put that down in this box honey but it's not ready we are gonna take our take our free [Music] [Music] weird hope you got brood and honey on this one we're gonna put it in there [Music] and then we'll find I'm not gonna move this typically people would make a sweat and move it I'm not going to because what I'm banking on is that those Queens are gonna hatch this is just gonna become their new hive they're they're here so in this hive I'm baking on an old queen or a couple of young Queens already being in there and and we're gonna put some some frames in here to give them the room to build put with that queen excluder back on give them some frames cross our fingers I am gonna go ahead move this box just to see what's going on down there [Music] okay this is down the did you in there baby-making down down here yeah Brewed looking [Music] trying to that light perfect behind me so I can see down in there I don't see eggs maybe they don't maybe they haven't had a green for a while yeah there's lots of baby bees in there that's all underneath all that captain brood you can see the brown caps and they also have lots of pollen yeah they may they may actually not have a laying Queen right at the moment because I haven't seen I haven't seen eggs yet and I haven't seen her so there's not seeing hers pretty common it's disappointing because right now these these bees are being really nice those all those brown caps are baby beads and sometimes I just don't see the eggs and they're there [Music] [Music] they have a very spotty brood pattern and no eggs that tells me they have not had a queen in at least well at least three days but maybe even longer the fact that they were building Queens with the Queen cells that we saw [Music] yeah there's no eggs all right well right we are hoping we're hoping that the Queen selves they had could I could go by Queens if they still have them available [Music] [Music] a little bit baffled because the queen that I bought this year was should have been a good young queen but really things happen things happen it's not it's not always easy to know and the bees know what's up that's why they were making Queens they they're not that distraught they're just like well alright we'll just get a new one well I am gonna miss these kinder gentler bees because the chances of them coming back that kind are actually kind of slim on this one there's a lot of honey this is toward the end again and brood and resources okay let's figure out how to put this hive back together we know that there's there's a good chance that there is a Virgin Queen in here or flying out today either way either way I think I think this hive is gonna be okay for Queens we're gonna scoot these back over and put this back in and then we're going to reduce the the hive down because if they are working if they're working on just becoming viable again meaning that they need they need to make a new queen their production might slow down I do have horizontal highs coming that will be nice because that'll make it a little easier to manage the hives one they'll be a constant height horizontally and I'll be able to I won't have to put boxes on and off okay so that is the deep so I think I'll put with that deep back on now we just need to figure out the best way to restock this hi so what I'm going to do is get some empty empty deep frames and we're gonna start filling that this helped with sagging deep you know put up empty and then a full empty full all the way down we have some right here so put empty one on the end let's keep these over [Music] see what I'm doing there but it's really sweaty and also my hats like that but that's okay I don't know if you guys can even see me um be there everywhere he's coming back with the stuff oh yeah visit everywhere that makes it ten in there and then we have to just figure out which which honey boxes are gonna go back on top if any but we'll put our queen excluder back on so the ones that are empty I'm gonna weed out these are all these honey creams no brood and I have room for one more looks like the rest of those [Music] that might we how big is this one ends up right now we're just playing a game you ever play those games where you're pushing puzzle pieces around to fit everything in that's what this is all right so do we want to put another box on let's see what we have here [Music] yeah we'll probably have to go ahead and put that second a second box on just because those those honey frames don't have enough honey to take in [Music] go ahead [Music] [Music] so these down here are empty and I say so we need five more up in this one hopefully the numbers work out well for me here [Music] let's have some money on it we're gonna wrap this up because I don't want you to get overheated it is hot [Music] actually that one that's those aren't gonna go well next to each other they're both too full I don't know Charles yes [Music] okay so we we have we can put two more in here actually I'm going to turn that around put one of these empty ones down in here that leaves us with an empty mostly empty okay now I just got to figure out what to do with all of those we try to get all those beads back up in this one is going back together it's almost like an abuse having you out here sorry taking this to the truck and then I'll come back out and wrap I'm like hopefully this last wall or like time he goes to the truck because I'm really dying it's fine though it also there's grass all right let's do a little recap before we walk away hi Gretchen B ranch 5gb are right here looking good I feel like they're in good shape still building into that second box hi one split kind of the same condition looks really nice of course I didn't get down into the brood chamber of one split or one so I don't know for sure how they're doing but I did get into the brood chamber of two and noticed that there's no eggs and there's only capped brood so no larva no eggs so there they have been queen with a little while but they're making new queens they had a number of Queen cells two of them were open and empty so the chances are in high - there have been a couple of queens hatch and are getting ready to do their job in there I took the remaining Queen cells and put them over into the split the hive to split hoping of course there's no guarantee but I'm hoping that they have the resources that they need in there to build a new hive and I can double that box up real soon and create a new hive off of that so I'll have five one split hive one two and two split and gbr and three which we didn't get into you can see right here that right now the bees today are actually being very respectful those new Queens that are coming in there's a really good chance that they will not be happy bees after that I can't really do a whole lot about that except to put new Queens in which means going and buying new Queens which I could do maybe I will I don't know we'll see but in the meantime that is the condition of the daddy curves bee yard let's go ahead and get in the shade and we'll wrap this video up we're back at the house Charles got his his full experience of being out in the bee yard in the heat yeah how you doing Charles yeah pretty cool bees are actually like you know kind of fascinating I like that actually it's not a scary thought and put it's really hot so I'm just very hot sitting right here on the porch what the breeze feels really nice or water in hand so thank you very much for helping out with the video that was helpful like I said if it reaches a million views you get ten bucks so help Charles get ten bucks and here on the daddy curbs farm I believe and approach Arles probably believes too that everyone has a story and every story counts your story counts because you count you matter thank you so much for being a part of our story through this video and letting us be a part of yours we'll talk to you soon I thought I was gonna get stung
