and they used to dump the glass the old glass the end of day waste glass down onto the beach and into the sea there's another little bit of white and and it's over 100 years old so the factory ran from I think the the 19th century right through to the 1920s I'm hoping to find some gorgeous multicolored glass as we agree but we're here for the multicolored pieces or multi zarcero honest mum's right in the middle anyway yeah that's all of our glass all of our beautiful glass and we had such a lucky day and we've also got lots of sea metal mum thousand coins and we always seem to find lots of bits of CMS let's see em no way especially aluminium they load it onto the ships and the harbours and I think some of it escapes and gets washed that says 8:45 yeah yeah Nick Oh anyway hello I'd like to tell you a little bit about how all this glass got to be here on the beach at CM and what makes it so unusual so there was a bottle works just above the beach just above the harbor really and it was called the Londonderry bottle works he opened the works in 1853 manufacturing what they call black bottles but these were actually very dark green bottles and the bits of black glass are quite difficult to find because they just look like pebbles so in 1856 they absorbed a smaller bottle works called fanox and the business thrived and by his death in 1874 there were seven bottle houses at seeum and they were beat and their cm bottles were being exported all over the world and john Candler she had a really strong relationship with his workforce and when the district bank in Sunderland failed he had and he had no money to pay his employees he they offered to work for a month without wages and candala SH was so touched and that he accepted their offer as a loan to be paid paid back with interest and this man only worked only earned about 10 shillings a week and so it was a huge sacrifice for them to do this and the bishop Westcott of durham considered this the finest episode of industrial relations of which he had ever heard at that time so he seemed like a really nice man and he went on to open a school and a library within the works and when his daughter married he actually held a tea and a concert and a ball for all of his workers inviting 600 men apprentices wives and sweethearts and so that was a really nice thing to do after his death his brother Robert took over the business and ran it for another 13 years and he also did a lot of good work for the employees he expanded and improved the bottle works and they started to make other glass the new pale glass of every shape color and size and the bottle works was taken over by Robertson Robert's son Joseph and it ran until 1921 when the company transferred its works to London and unfortunately after that the bottle works was closed and eventually demolished and the lovely community that they had there disappeared so that's a real shame and a big blow to the community yeah then they go on strike I didn't know they refused to go on strike when other industries at the time had gone on strike they refused to and they kept working this is just a real testament to their you know it goes to show if you have that good working relationship yeah your employees if only other Victorian employees by here today you know track their workers so well yeah you know the world would have been a better place would be now yeah would be now so so just takes a little bit of kindness kindness and consideration it really is actually really touching it is and it and to think that all this these bits of glass came from that yeah you know a lot of the workers actually took waste glass home and had little side businesses in their backyards where they'd make beautiful glass things are very skilled and these today are worth a lot of money well actually some of the some of the sea glass the multicolored sea glass is actually worth a lot of money for sea glass collectors now as well people come from all over the world to see them to find this unique glass and the bottle works might be gone and the community may be gone but this is their legacy all these years and the future people loving and appreciating well this this glass yeah some people still making a living in cm from glass that they find yeah so here are some of the things that well I say some literally just some because we have like chest full of CMC glass mostly but these are our best bits yeah so we've got some amazing colors the I mean these have been years in the collecting I can stop just like looking at this sea glass for a second I want to show you the amazing ring mum made it has a beautiful hammered band and the seagulls kind of just glows it's absolutely amazing and she stamped the back with northern Medlock's nm it's just stunning beautiful okay so that is some of our amazing collection of CMC glass and we will be back we will definitely be returning back to see him for more videos it's a shame and we couldn't have shown you finding every single one of these bits but we didn't make videos no we didn't this is this is this is years and years of sort of collecting as well yeah on and off so anyway
