know it doesn't matter whether we're viewing or in the in the building it's the same holy spirit that unites our hearts and brings us together just let me give a brief report on one of our major outreaches to further the gospel the hope new hope community center hope house there was they ministered just three mornings a week to five zip codes and people obviously they need the support of the church because they don't charge for their services and it costs quite a bit to give away food and clothing and whatever it is that people need but there was three bus tickets given not just to tour the city but to get to work 36 clothing clients and 26 clothing for the homeless as well that's not articles there's 216 articles of clothing and toiletries three financial aid applications 77 food boxes 26 food bags they didn't give any haircuts apparently people didn't need it but it was a 185 volunteers for the week now isn't that something what a blessing that is absolutely you see and it's this congregation at home and here that uh your generosity that goes to promote the gospel you see god set it up to where the gospel and missions and the the uh the plan of god to be promoted throughout the world is accomplished through the generous giving of his people that's how it gets accomplished god doesn't depend on the world to promote the gospel good thing huh amen so it depends on the people of god so let's pray father i just praise you and thank you lord for the generosity of people and father i just pray for gift and giver that you bless both lord that the gospel be shall still be jesus [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] good morning everybody it's great to see everybody today also just want to say uh welcome to those that are joining us online and live stream this morning it's so good to have you we're here so many times uh during the week just how many people are still engaging with us through the live stream and um just appreciate it and enjoy it so uh we're glad that you're with us this morning and uh it's been a great morning so far just being able to sing some of those songs old rug across jesus paid it all those are just some incredible songs amen amen yeah just spectacular yeah you can clap for the song for sure uh yeah just good stuff i love it when when things just keep us moving in the direction and being helping us be reminded of of who our god is and just how much he really loves us and how much he has done for us in in our relationship with him so i don't know uh how many dads we have in the room but my guess is that a lot of you have experienced what i've experienced maybe maybe they did this with the moms too but in particular for some reason this was a a dad thing that when your daughters would get to the age where they started dating and and had somebody who said hey uh i want to marry you and i want to spend the rest of my life with you then they would typically have to either maybe before they ask the question or after they ask the question somewhere in between there they would have to say to the dad hey um is it okay if i marry your daughter right like and i have two daughters and so i had i had the privilege or the non-privilege of going through that experience i don't know it was a little bit of both i i sensed it coming both times and i got a really big knot in my stomach and honestly i wanted to mess around with them a little bit but i knew i knew it was very difficult so i just went with it and they kind of stuttered the words out hey is it okay if i uh marry your daughter and literally you know they're asking for the blessing right they're asking for hey is is it okay with you that i marry your daughter and you know everything in me wanted to say no dude you can't do it um but i would say i would say yes and i know that they would wipe all the sweat off their forehead and and they were seeking in that moment though they were seeking approval they were seeking hey you're saying yes that that is okay and so much of what a blessing is in regards to that is like hey someone's giving approval they're saying yes to this and and then they'll either tell you they've already asked them to marry them or they'll say hey i'm gonna go ahead and do this don't say anything by the way the don't say anything always got me in trouble with my wife because i literally thought i wasn't supposed to say anything to anybody but it comes i figure out real quickly that doesn't mean her like you can tell me things that you're not supposed to tell anybody else right so anyway that that is the idea in regards to that we're in a series that really is challenging some of the things that we kind of put uh in our minds that are like the bible says that so we're saying hey does the bible say that and the question for us this morning is does obedience does our obedience when we do the things that god wants us to do does obedience lead to blessing and so we have to kind of go okay let's clarify what that means just a little bit does obedience and then you put a blank in front of the word blessing does obedience lead to because i think the deeper question that we're really asking is this and maybe there's a few questions does obedience lead to material blessing does obedience lead to financial blessing does obedience lead to circumstantial blessing does obedience lead to health blessings and so we're asking the question because a lot of times we in our relationship with god we we get the sense hey maybe i didn't do something that i was supposed to do and because of that something bad now is happening to me and so we correlate our disobedience with bad things happening and so the verse must be true then that if i am obedient and i am doing the things that god wants me to do then then good things should be happening to me and that presents a whole lot of thinking and leaning into what the bible does say and so what does the bible say what what does the bible say about blessing what does the bible say about obedience in connection to blessing well in order to answer that question we need to kind of move backwards a little bit into the old testament and in the old testament there is the old covenant that the people of israel had with god and god set up this covenant with them and the covenant goes all the way back to genesis chapter 12 with abraham and god establishing this covenant and he says abraham i'm going to make your people into a great nation there's going to be so many people that there's not they're not going to be able to count him abraham your name will become famous and all peoples will be blessed through you and god sets up this this a covenant with abraham and it and it goes to the establishment eventually which will be the israelite people well as the israelite people are being developed really out of out of slavery after they come out of slavery in egypt god is setting up some principles and some guidelines and some directions for the people of israel he gives them the ten commandments you know you shall not have any other gods before me you shall not have any idols don't you misuse the name of the lord your god and so he begins to list out some of these criteria of of obedience and how we are to obey god well in deuteronomy chapter 28 um it it kind of leans into this question does obedience lead to blessing basically the question is if if i do what god wants will god do what i want or is there a quid pro quo with god right like hey god you scratch my back i'll scratch your back i mean and and i know we kind of laugh at that a little bit but we're going to read in deuteronomy chapter 28 the first five verses where god says if you do this i will bless you listen to what he says in deuteronomy chapter 28 again god's establishing his relationship with the people of israel and he's given them a lot of like guidelines and directions and ways to understand how the relationship with god is going to work and listen to what he says this is not on the screen by the way this i'm just going to read this out to you again it's deuteronomy chapter 28 verses 1 through 5. listen to what he says he says if you fully obey so there's the obedience part of it the lord your god and carefully follow all of his commands i give to you today the lord your god will set you on high above the nations and all these blessings there's the blessing part so there's obedience and blessing and all these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the lord your god you will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country the fruit of the womb will be blessed and which means there's going to be lots of babies and we knew israel was really good at having babies by the way so many that the when they were in israel uh israel the nation of israel was in egypt they had so many babies that israel was like hey or egypt was like hey we have to enslave them because there's getting too many of them so you should be blessed the crops of your land and the livestock and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed so there it is god says hey in our relationship and by the way this he begins to say this throughout deuteronomy a few times there is a blessing and he's establishing the blessing in regards to this idea that hey when you obey in our relationship i'm going to i'm going to do this for you well down in this verse 15 and for a few verses he says here's what happens if you do not obey here's what happens and it's just basically the reverse which is kind of the way blessings and curse worse curses work he says however in verse 15 if you do not obey the lord your god and you do not carefully follow all of his commands and decrees that i am given to you today all of these curses will come on you and overtake you that's a great word right there by the way i mean who doesn't like to be cursed uh me personally i don't like cursing you will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed the fruit of your moon will be cursed the crops of your land and the calves and the herds and the lambs of your flocks you will be cursed and when you come in and cursed when you go out and he and he continues to go on from there and says here's what happens if you don't obey and not good things are going to happen so the question needs to be answered does obedience equate to blessing particularly financial blessing think about it if i do what god wants god's gonna make me rich right so here's my question to you today if you obey god and you do exactly what he says all the time are you going to be financially blessed because that begs the question to be answered what about what about circumstantial blessing if if god if you do if god if i do what you want and i'm obedient to you could you make my life just really good like give me all the promotions i want at work and when when there's good things that can happen to somebody like i want all the good things like lord when i leave here today i want all the lights to be green and lord i want i want to get to the restaurant and i want i want to get the best seat and i want to get served the fastest and i want them to come up to me after i get served and say hey guess what we're going to we're just going to give you your food for free today you don't even have to you don't even have to pay and not even that when you come back next time we're just going to keep taking taking giving you food and not making you pay all the blessings in the world circumstantial blessing and or is there health blessing if i'm obedient to god will god always give me good health will he always do that for me and so we read in deuteronomy chapter 28 there's a little tension between blessings and curses and it seems to be that in the old covenant the way that the old covenant worked with god there was this relational transaction between obedience and blessing and how god worked with the people in the in the israelites in the old covenant and and i and i want to say this as we as we look at this there are reasons for that number one reason that we have to understand that god is trying to establish the israelite people as god's chosen people he's trying to establish him as the people of god and their direct way of being obedient is how they reflect god to the world around them and so god's saying hey i need you to do this because really you're supposed to be a blessing to all the people around you by the way that you interact relationally with me and so when they're disobedient they're doing a disservice to god because the character of god in and of himself is really the ten commandments you see so often we look at the rules that god establishes in in regards to the way that we're obedient with him and we look at these rules and we go oh christianity and being a follower of jesus is so much just about rules and do's and don'ts and god just wants to make our life unfun and uncool and and he just wants to have uh us do whatever he wants all the time and that's really not the case the rules that god establishes with us helps us to understand god's character and who god is and god wants us to reflect his character in the way that we are obedient to him and so it's about god's character that he is establishing these rules and it's about his way of having us be seen in the world around us and the way that he wants us to understand the best life for you is a life of obedience in relationship to me and the old covenant was established for us to see that we in and of ourselves cannot do what jesus one day would do for us that is so much as we would try we can't keep all the laws and we can't be obedient all the time and we are going to fail and when we fail there is a curse that comes with that and sometimes the curse is circumstantial here on earth in the old covenant by the way don't don't miss hear what i'm saying to you in the old covenant it sometimes is circumstantial here on earth but sometimes it's circumstantial after we take our last breath and so god is establishing his people and in the old covenant there was a direct correlation between blessing and obedience and the relationship that god had with his people but god wasn't being unfair and by the way when you read the old testament god is extremely patient with the israelite people extremely patient beyond patient to the point where he would say hey don't do this and don't do this and they would do it for such a long duration that god would finally have to act and say that you can't do this anymore and here comes what i told you would eventually come and so that's the old covenant but when it comes to the new covenant when it comes to the new testament there is a complete transition of our understanding of blessing it is not the same and we do a disservice to the world around us when we equate obedience with blessing particularly financial blessing circumstantial blessing health blessing it's not about that the blessing that we receive in the new testament is solely with jesus himself that is the blessing we receive the greatest blessing the greatest gift in the history of the world through jesus we are blessed beyond measure we are blessed by jesus coming to earth by jesus ministry by his death burial and resurrection all of it we are blessed beyond measure because of that that is the new covenant that we have in jesus and the reason it is such a blessing because it's not about what we can do to earn god's blessing in our life god blessed us through jesus regardless of our obedience and our ability to be obedient or disobedient we receive the greatest gift through jesus christ our lord and savior and he lavishes that on us but in the midst of that we still live in a world where we struggle with this idea of obedience and peace and contentment and connection between god why aren't you doing this for me and god why would you allow this to happen to me and so paul gives us this little inkling in philippians paul is a a a leader in the church in the new testament paul writes the majority of the letters in the new testament particularly the the epistles after matthew mark luke john and and acts and he really helps us lean into this idea of what it means to practical applications of what it means to be a follower of jesus and paul is writing this letter to the church in philippi the philippians and he's writing in this letter he writes it from prison he's in rome in prison and he's writing this letter to a people that he he once was connected with relationally and he is longing to connect with him and to be with him and at the end of philippians chapter 4 verse 10 we're going to read and it's going to be up on the screen he leans into this idea of obedience and blessing maybe more so obedience and peace and obedience and contentment one of the gifts that god really desires to give to all of us in our relationship with him but it can be often times a struggle so listen to the words that paul wrote in philippians chapter 4 verse verse 10 and following it'll be up on the screen if you want to uh follow along i rejoice greatly in the lord that you at last renewed your concern for me indeed you were concerned but you had no opportunity to show it i am not saying this because i am in need for i have learned to be content whatever the circumstance i know what it is to be in need and i know what it is to have plenty i have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation whether well fed or hungry whether living in plenty or in one i can let's read this together this last part can we do that i can do all things through him who gives me strength let's read that one more time really out loud here we go i can do all things through him who gives me strength amen so paul says in verse 10 he says hey i really am grateful that you are now able to connect reconnect with me and get word to me and send a financial blessing to me now paul was in prison and you can imagine in prison one of the most difficult situations that paul probably has been in was being in prison and they wanted to keep him isolated disconnected from the people that care about him and it was hard for them to get resources to him paul saying hey i'm glad you were finally able to reconnect and and and be a blessing to me in that in that way and so maybe they found a way to come through the back door and get something to paul maybe they were just that finally opened up and they relented and said hey we're go ahead and let people reconnect with you and and and be a blessing to you financially but paul is saying hey thank you thank you church and they're reading imagine again getting this letter from paul and as they would get this letter from chapter one all the way to the end of chapter four they're reading this letter from paul that they just received and paul's like hey i'm so glad that you were able to reconnect with me and be a blessing to me and so that's the first thing in our relationship to the lord when it comes to answering the question of does obedience lead to blessing my first question to you or my first encouragement to you is is not asking what in what way can you be blessed but ask the question who can you be a blessing to who have you been a blessing to this week who have you been a blessing to not just financially sometimes the best blessing that we can be to someone is to give them our time and attention and our focus we're really busy doing a whole lot of nothing and we forget to be a blessing to people because we have been blessed beyond measure through our relationship with jesus christ we should strive to be a blessing to people all the time when people see us coming they should say i know i'm going to be blessed by this engagement and this conversation people should not be happy to see you leave the room they should be happy to see you come in the room right i think that is so important i think it's so important that we strive to be a blessing the church in philippi was so glad that they could be a blessing to paul both connecting with him because it lifted up his spirits there are people around us all the time that need us to say an encouraging word to them you know that there are some people who are just literally hanging on by a thread right now they're discouraged in life they're frustrated they don't have the hope that we have within jesus christ and they need someone to give them a word of encouragement it doesn't always have to be financial blessing but maybe it does but maybe god has been prompting you to be a blessing to someone and you know oftentimes our thinking is oh i gotta i don't have enough money to be a blessing i mean i wanna i would love to give them a thousand dollars or fifteen hundred dollars or two no you can be a blessing just by giving someone ten bucks and maybe even five bucks it doesn't have to be this extreme extravagant thing that we're waiting for some opportunity someday down the road to do no be a blessing now and that's what the church in philippi was to paul they were they were an extreme blessing to him in that moment so this week who are you going to be a blessing to maybe you don't know exactly who you'll be a blessing to but maybe you'll just say lord help me keep my eyes open to be a blessing this week to someone around me so that's the first thing is that we're really a blessing and here's the second thing i really think and we as we ask this question does the bible really say that about obedience leads to blessing because the answer is yes and no both really to be honest with you but maybe just maybe the second thing that we can learn from paul is this that understanding that we are blessed is something that we have to learn paul says i've learned what it means to be content in every situation whether i've been well fed or hungry whether i've been in prison or out of prison whether i've had a lot of money or had had just a little bit of money or had nothing at all i mean paul's like hey in all of these circumstances i've learned it learning contentment is a process and it's a process that all followers of jesus must go through because learning contentment and peace means understanding that we are currently blessed no matter what our circumstances are our circumstances don't dictate blessing jesus already dictated the blessing to us and when we receive jesus christ as our lord and savior we are blessed because there is nothing that you could receive on earth that compares to what jesus can give to you nothing he is the blessing and yet we keep thinking well if i just got a little bit more money and if my my circumstances were just a little bit better and i had a better house and a nicer car i could go to better restaurants and all of these things and boy if my back wasn't hurt my knee wasn't hurt and my toe wasn't hurt and we just think of all the things that are hurting on us and if i just had better health i would feel better blessed and and we're equating god's god's relationship to us through obedience and through through this transaction that i have to do the right thing and say the right thing all the time to be blessed and really as we learn contentment what paul is saying i've learned is that i am blessed simply because jesus is a blessing and the circumstances isn't it nice to be able to say and isn't it give us peace because that's really what contentment is all about to be able to say whatever comes my way today whatever happens to me whether it's good or bad i can say i'm learning what it means to be content in all situations and not have the ups and downs and the emotional difficulties of every day based on every circumstance so paul says hey i thank you for the blessing that you are to me i'm learning what it means to be content so learning is a process and it's a process that can only be learned as we continue to understand the blessing that we receive in jesus and then paul says this i can do all things through christ all things we use that verse for so many things it's a sports verse to for all the athletes to be able to go hey i can do everything and and it really doesn't mean that paul is tying that verse simply into this idea of peace and contentment and the and the the answer to the question is it's through jesus strength that i can have peace and contentment it's through christ alone i get it through jesus so as jesus was in his ministry he would often times point out particular things that he was observing and seeing so one day jesus was in the temple and he was noticing the religious leaders give money imagine jesus watching you give would you be like man i'm going to pull out a couple extra 20s today because jesus is watching me anyway he was watching he was in the temple and that was probably wasn't unusual for people to see other people give anyway he was watching the religious leaders give and then he watched this widow give and he watched her give everything that she had and it wasn't much in our equation today it was maybe like a 1 8 of a cent or 1 16 of a cent it was hardly any money at all but she gives it all and jesus says to everybody and he makes it a point to point this out he says you see that widow right there she gave more than everybody else gave in the room like it was a competition but that wasn't his point to make he wasn't making a point about the fact that they didn't give and they could have gave more he simply said she gave more than everybody because she gave everything and he connected her giving to the fact that he knew that's all that she had and everybody else who was giving they had lots more money but they were just given a little bit of what they had so he was trying to connect the two but after that story jesus doesn't go on to say and because she gave everything that she had i'm going to give her more money and i'm going to give her better circumstances and she's going to get remarried and she's going to have lots of kids and everything in her life is going to be blessed and she's going to have good health until the day that she dies it's all going to be a blessing to her he doesn't say anything you know why church because obedience doesn't equal blessing obedience is the blessing obedience is the blessing when we are obedient in our relationship with jesus that is the blessing the things that god ask you and i to do are good they aren't burdensome he doesn't do it to make us feel bad or be miserable but even when we can't measure up even when we can't always do everything correct and right and make every right choice jesus still covers us with his blood jesus still covers us with his grace jesus still gives us forgiveness of sins we are blessed and what we are asked to do in the life that we are asked to live is is a blessing in and of itself living for god and doing the things that god wants you to do comes with zero regret it comes with no shame and no guilt because it's a blessing you'll never regret doing one thing that god has asked you to do but sin and disobedience comes with all the guilt and all the shame and all the discouragement in the world and even in that we receive forgiveness it's so good to have hope in jesus christ it's so good to look at that passive scripture and go does obedience lead does obedience lead to blessing and the answer is through jesus we are blessed and the bible doesn't say that you're going to be more blessed materially and more blessed circumstantially it doesn't say that at all and if we ever read into that into the new covenant i want to encourage you with this in matthew chapter 5 jesus says some words about being blessed and its blessings are really hardly ever mentioned the new testament compared to how many times they're mentioned in the old testament by the way but jesus says in matthew chapter 5 blessed are those who are poor in spirit blessed are those who are meek blessed are those who are pure in heart blessed are those who are persecuted because of my name's sake he he's trying to show us a correlation between the fact that blessing obedience is the blessing and we are beginning to receive that blessing every day that we are that we are connected to jesus number one and every day that we choose to do what he asks us to do we are blessed beyond measure i want to encourage you after the service is over we'll be down front and if you have a concern or a prayer or anything do you want to have a conversation about we'll have some people down front that would love to do that with you today would you pray with me father we're so grateful we're grateful that we can gather we we love to be together because it's it's coming together in the name of your son jesus we we are your church you're your body and father we seek to live lives that are uh absolutely in accordance with your will and your purpose and father we're grateful that when we fall short you uh lavish grace and mercy on us anyway we're so grateful that we can father just hear from your word today father help us to help us to be people of peace and contentment help us to continue to learn every day what paul learned to be content in every situation father we're grateful for this in jesus name amen so we're going to receive communion now and as the ushers are getting ready they're going to come down the aisles and just ask that you take the cups two cups together they're connected and hold on to them and then kim bristol will be leading you in a time of communion this morning ushers please come [Music] in galatians 2 20 the apostle paul gives an amazing statement of faith [Music] he says i'm crucified with christ nevertheless christ lives in me and the life i now live i live by faith in the son of god who loved me and died for me romans 6 11 says reckon yourself dead to sin but alive to christ [Music] it begs the question what does that have to do with communion well everything when we take communion it's a visible statement of faith i'm crucified with christ we proclaim the lord's death till he comes the bible says first corinthians 11 26 until he comes i'm alive and i'm making a statement of faith that is through the blood and the body of christ that i truly am made alive and he is coming again and will see him face to face the bible says what a blessing that is so when jesus took the bread at what we call the last supper he took the bread and he broke it and he said take eat this is my body which is broken for you let's eat together [Music] thank you lord he reached down and picked up a cup he said the contents of this cup represents my blood which is shed for many for the remission of sins let's drink together [Music] we just demonstrated our statement of faith we internalized christ lives in me we internalized the body and blood of christ in a statement of faith what a blessing that is amen let me pray father thank you so much it's not the emblems themselves lord but what they represent it's our faith by taking them christ lives in us thank you for that and we live by faith in the son of god in jesus name amen amen just before we an announcement in an asking for volunteers because a big part of oasis is the wonderful lunch that's served but there needs to be folks in the kitchen willing to give of themselves on behalf of those that come so if you have some availability at noon or actually before noon but on wednesdays ron and joy ball will be doing the cooking uh please see them it would be such a blessing and a ministry
