BCB International Mountain Survival Kit

hi everybody i'm eric siegel with kit bash survival and today we're going to be checking out the bcb international 23 piece mountain survival kit bcb international is a company that's based in the uk and that's where this kit is made i got this kit about a year ago from a uk site called camping world i'll put a link to it in the description below and i believe i paid about forty dollars u.s for this kit now it's very similar to another kit that bcb makes which is this one the 25 piece military survival kit i've already reviewed this if you want to check out that video there should be a link to it popping up right about now but for today we're going to focus on the mountain survival kit now obviously because of the size of this kit i would classify this as a compact survival kit so it's not going to have absolutely everything you would need in a life or death survival situation and you're not going to be able to survive for weeks on end with a kit like this kits like this are best seen as emergency backup gear so for example if you're going backpacking like this guy is you might want to throw a kit like this in the bottom of your pack and that way if your primary gear fails for whatever reason you've got something to fall back onto so anyway let's go look at the back here and they've got a list of the contents here so it says handle matches fishing kit compass razor blades fireball flint and striker wire saw water carriers condoms cotton wool sewing kit needles water purifying tablets snare wire a candle pencil safety pins a signal mirror a whistle an emergency form an adhesive dressing masking tape a knife and survival instructions and they've got a little warning here that says condoms should be used to store water they're not for personal use one cool thing is that right here you can see that the kit was made in 2018 and it expires in may of 2021 although i'm sure this would be good for quite some time after the official expiration date and then down here it says the actual size of the kit itself is 11 by 8 by 2.8 centimeters and the weight is 260 grams all right let's go ahead and open it up and here's the tin itself [Music] looks pretty nice kind of reminds me of a best glide survival kit so we've got some electrical tape around the outside for waterproofing and of course you would save this tape because in an emergency or survival situation it's always good to have some tape and there we go so first up we've got two condoms for water storage there they are then we've got this bag of stuff which we'll get into in just a minute here's a cotton ball for tinder then we've got some storm matches looks like we've got six storm matches and a striker not bad and then here's the knife and it's just a cheap run-of-the-mill knife probably not that great it does have a rubberized coating on the scales which is nice and it's got a little chain here made in china so yeah not the world's best knife but in a pinch it'll do it's got a serrated edge right here and then a plain edge right at the end again not super high quality but in a pinch it'll do [Music] then we've got a couple of band-aids then there's a larger band-aid right here here are the water purification tablets two four six eight ten of them so the instructions are add one tablet to one liter of clear water and leave for 30 minutes before using so with 10 tablets you can purify 10 liters of water here's our signal mirror it does have a coating on it to protect it until you need to use it not bad and then here are the handles for the tin if you're going to use it to boil water or cook food i'll show you how these work in just a minute now let's open up this bag of goodies you know what i think i'll use the knife to cut the tape and work just fine [Music] [Applause] all right so we've got two zip ties [Applause] here's the pencil here is the wire saw and it's one of the better cheap wire saws it does have the rubberized handles to help out with your hands and then we've got some safety pins looks like one two three four five six safety pins of varying sizes and we've got our sewing kit [Music] here's our flashlight you've seen these before you can do a momentary action like that or you can lock it and it'll stay on not super bright but it'll do then we've got a rubber tube so here's the rubber tube looks like it's about maybe 15 inches long or so and i suppose you could use this as a drinking straw but i believe the intended use is as a tourniquet then we've got some cordage just a little bit here's the brass snare wire and then we've got our ferro rod and striker and a compass i believe this is the same one they had in the military survival kit because i have seen this one before so here's the striker and it's got a little sawtooth edge right there got a compass in the handle which does appear to work it is accurate and let's see if this thing can throw some good sparks [Music] oh yeah works just fine all right then we've got a tea light candle always good to have one of these we've got two straight edge razors not bad then we've got a mini fishing kit so we've got some line four big sinkers several swivels and several hooks i'm not going to take this out but you can see what's in there pretty cool then we've got our whistle www.bcbin.com oh yeah sounds fine good tone and then the last thing in the bag is the survival instructions and you've seen stuff like this before it's just got basic survival instructions to help you get by and then you've also got some space for writing you've got an accident evaluation form an initial examination checklist an emergency report and a survival plan so yeah not bad and then we have the tin itself which can be used to boil water or cook food or what have you and the way the handles work these are the handles is you clip them onto the side like that and then you pinch them and now you've got some handles in case the pot is hot when you put it over a fire pretty cool so here it is all laid out for a compact survival kit i think this is actually a pretty good kit obviously it doesn't have everything you might need and you could make a few improvements here and there but overall i think it's pretty good and it's a kit i'd be happy to take with me on a backpacking trip or something like that where i need some emergency gear just in case something happens to my main gear now there's not a whole lot of room in the tin but i would like to try to add a few items just to make the kit a little better so first up i'm going to remove this low quality knife and in its place i'll put a nice victorinox classic these are the ones that have the scissors the knife the nail file the screwdriver the tweezers and the toothpick then i'll add some medical supplies i'm gonna add one alcohol wipe i'm gonna add a mini med kit that's got four ibuprofens two benadryls two diclofenacs which is sort of a powerful anti-inflammatory and one imodium i'm also gonna add a large gauze pad i'm gonna add a little piece of fat wood just to help with building a fire and i'm gonna add a melitta coffee filter to help filter sediment out of the water before purifying it and then finally if there's room i'd like to add this mini big glider i don't know if there will be space for it but we'll see so let's get busy and repack the kit [Music] [Music] all right i got it all back in there including the mini big lighter that's awesome so the last thing i want to do is add a couple items to the exterior of the kit i'm going to add a space blanket so that we have a shelter element and then i'll have a thick ranger band secure the space blanket to the kit so what i'll do is tuck the space blanket up under the kit right here and then i'll bring over my ranger band and fit it around like that and then just get it centered up and we'll be good to go and not only does the ranger band hold the space blanket to the kit but it also helps keep the kit nice and securely shut as well so there you have it this is the bcb international mountain survival tin a good compact survival kit made even better with a few extra ingredients on the inside and a shelter element with a
