in this balder's gate 3 video we're going to be taking a look at character creation all the things that make it up from origin skills appearance class abilities etc i have more specific videos on the races and classes specifically as well as individual class videos planned so if you haven't checked those out and you want more specifics on those things then please be sure to watch those videos so the first thing baldur's gate 3 is going to ask you to do when you start playing early access is whether you want to make a custom or use one of the origin characters you cannot currently use origin characters so you're going to only use a custom character in early access this is probably going to be added later so this may change but presently you're going to make a custom character and it's going to ask you for your name and your background now before you do any of this before you do race or appearance i highly suggest you go to class and figure out what class you want to play first feel like your entire character is going to be you know designed around your class and what race you choose can and what background you choose is going to benefit that class so you need to figure out what sort of character you want to play first if you want to get best results so i highly advise starting there first so first up under classes is the cleric this is a divine uh spellcaster somebody's gonna be casting a lot of spells has some healing as well it's very good for a new player if you're playing the game for the first time i highly recommend cleric as a possible choice for you the ability guiding bolt does tons of damage and it's just really really strong as well as that having self heals and buffs it's just a good all-around beginner class looking over the subclasses they not only give you some certain benefits but they also determine a couple of the starting spells you gain as well as what the spells will be as you level up throughout the game so they all kind of have their own focus and you're going to want to look over them and kind of see what spells you get as long as well as these bonuses and kind of make the decision what will be best for you you can't see what other spells you're going to get at higher levels so i recommend using the wiki for this since we'll have this data in there very very quickly uh what you can get at each level so you can sort of see like how your character is going to go if you choose each one that way you get a better idea of what path might work good for you moving along to fighter this class has a lot of proficiency with all the armor shields and basically every weapon so if you're going to be a martial character someone that's going to use different weapons this is a very very good class to take they also have a lot of hit points per level so they're very durable they can also heal themselves once per day with second wind and once you hit level two you're actually going to pick like sort of your fighting style you'll get to pick whether you want a bonus to like range or do wield or dual or two-handed weapons or whether you want to be more defensive and then when you get to level three you're going to pick between battle master or eldritch knight which is going to be sort of your subclass and that will kind of determine the direction your character goes whether you're going to be using some spells in melee or whether you're just going to be a really powerful weapon expert basically again you can use the wiki in order to see exactly what paths these will take you so that you can make a decision when making your character when deciding to pick a ranger class you're going to get some different benefits you're going to want to look through favorite enemy and natural explorer these give you different passives so you want to like really read these and see what they do for instance keeper the veil gives you proficiency with arcana and can cast protection from good and evil and mage breaker gives you proficiency with arcana and true strike can trips but also gives you advantage on attack roles against creatures which is excellent ranger knight gives you proficiency with history and heavy armor so if you want to be you know more of a heavy armor type ranger then this would be a good one to pick for you but you're going to want to look through these and see what benefits they give and whether they benefit the play style that you like similarly a bit to fighter at level 2 you're going to get to pick your play style whether you want to focus on bows or dual wielding it doesn't quite have the amount of things you can focus in as fighter but you will get to sort of more specialize the type of combat that you like to do once you get to level three you're gonna have to choose between your subclass which in this case is hunter or beastmaster hunter is more specialized in the damage department you're going to get to pick one of three passives that sort of dictate what you can do in combat whether it's a reaction against large creatures or maybe you do extra damage against a target that's not at full health but if you choose beast master then you're going to be able to summon a creature it's either like a wolf raven bear i can't remember abor exactly what all of them are but you have a choice of what you can summon and this is going to aid you in combat and you'll also gain some spell casting at that level and you can choose from a few spells moving to the rogue class you're going to gain some proficiency and and light armor as well as some simple uh weapons and very specific weapon proficiencies uh you don't have as much flexibility here as the fighter class naturally but you also gain some abilities that allow you to increase damage whether in melee or arranged if the enemy if you have advantage or the enemy has another target within it so like if you're trying for a backstab or something and this is gonna boost your damage in those situations once you reach level three with the thief you're gonna have to choose from arcane trickster or thief subclasses arcane trickster uses like enchantment and illusion magic to aid itself making itself invisible or charming other people to get what it wants where the thief uses like you know it's more stealthy it also takes very little fall damage compared to other classes allows you to get another bonus action and it's just really good if you're wing trying to play that you know classic thief type character the warlock is another spell casting class like cleric but instead of using wisdom for its difficulty checks making spells harder it instead uses charisma so you're going to want to have a lot of charisma if you're making this class and really the differences in the subclasses here are just which spells you're going to get at each level and also but i do want to draw your attention to one difference here the fiend actually has a passive called dark one's blessing that's going to heal you when you kill enemies this is very good for a beginner healing is somewhat limited in baldur's gate 3 so being able to heal very easily by doing something that you're going to be doing anyway killing enemies is very very good warlocks have very limited proficiencies with light armor and and simple weapons this is a bit better than the wizard class which has even less but so it allows them to you know make some sort of combination between spellcaster and somebody who uses some weapons but you're probably primarily going to play as a spellcaster if you're using this class wizard is the last class you can choose from and it is an intelligence based spellcaster this means it uses intelligence for its difficulty check making its spells harder to resist so you're going to want to increase intelligence significantly if you're playing a wizard wizards have no armor proficiency whatsoever and they have very very limited weapon proficiency so if you're playing a wizard you're almost always going to be some sort of spellcaster at the beginning you're going to get to choose which spells you want from a list and also which skills you have prepared if you didn't know you need to prepare your skills in this game that means that you need to pick what you want them to be and then rest for them to be able to be used so you can't just be out on the landscape and go you know what i want to use these spells now swap them out and then you can use them kind of like dos 2 that is not the case here so you're gonna have to prepare from your list of spells that you know which ones you want at level two on your wizard you're gonna have to choose which school of magic you wanna specialize in either evocation or ab duration so that's the decision you're gonna make when you make your first level up as a wizard and evokers specialize more in dealing damage they're kind of the dps wizard if you're familiar with pillars of eternity it's kind of a similar concept it's not exactly the same but it has a lot to do with offensive spells well ab duration has more to do with defensive spells so you're going to kind of pick which and that's going to you know determine which spells you get as you progress the game again use the wiki in order to figure out which spells these are going to be so you get an idea of what you're going to get and you can make that decision during character creation once you've decided what class you want to play i highly suggest going and selecting your race next this is because it's going to give you some sort of proficiencies and skills and you can best figure out how to marry the race to the class that you picked to fill in its weak spots or to shore up and improve some of the areas that's already strong in taking a look at elves first they have good dexterity and heils have intelligence and what else have wisdom so if you're gonna be using ranged weapons elves are a good choice uh if you're gonna be using finesse weapons these are weapons that have the finesse tag on them for mainly they're also a good choice or if you're gonna make some sort of spell caster high elf would be good for a wizard while the what elf would be good for a cleric you'll also notice they have some good weapon proficiencies this can really help out if you're playing a spellcaster class because you have poor weapon proficiencies you can get some very good ones from being an elf the tiffany's is going to give you plus two charisma no matter which subclass you take but one of them is going to give you strength while the other two give you intelligence and really the differences here are in the cantrips that you're going to get besides that one change in strength as well um charisma is good for warlocks in the early access so if you're going to be playing a warlock tiefling is probably one of the best races you can pick for it drow have somewhat similar bonuses to the elves they're slightly different they're actually a race of l so that makes sense they have plus two dexterity so again they're good with ranged weapons as well as finesse based weapons but they also give you charisma this helps with warlock spell casting so if you wanted to make a warlock that did some sort of ranged or maybe finesse weapons this wouldn't be a bad choice humans don't have any sub-races and in fact their stats are just kind of spread out between all abilities so that makes them kind of a jack-of-all-trades and it can be kind of difficult to make a good character that's good a little bit better at everything when it's not very good typically you want to spend your ability points to kind of specialize in the things that that class or the build you're going for is good at so this may not be the best race to pick for beginning player normally in d d you would get an extra feed for being human but that's just not the case in baldur's gate three so unfortunately it makes it a little bit weaker in my opinion okay thank you like humans do not have a sub race they give you intelligence and strength as long as well as some armor proficiencies and some weapon proficiencies they're very good with swords as you can see um so if you're going to make a melee character like a fighter this is a very very good choice also you could potentially make like an eldritch knight that is from the subclass from fighter that would work very well because of the bonus to intelligence dwarves come with extra constitution and some weapon proficiencies uh with particular weapons this makes them a little bit harder to kill than other races and the gold dwarf gives you extra wisdom so this might be good for a cleric build um and it makes them a little bit harder to kill by increasing their health and the shield dwarf gives you extra strength as well as some armor proficiency so this one's probably gonna be good for like a fighter you're gonna have high health high damage and weapon and armor proficiencies so this is a very good choice for the fighter class half alps are extremely versatile the downside here is that they don't come with any additional proficiencies so you're going to want to keep that in mind when making your build make sure you're selecting the class that has the weapon and armor efficiencies you want because you're not going to get any from selecting these but they do give you plus two charisma which is excellent for warlocks and you also get a place plus one point into two other abilities uh whether it's strength dexterity constitution intelligence or wisdom so maybe you want to make a you know fighter or dexterity based uh and constitution based with your spell casting to make maybe like a ranged character or maybe you want to play a strength one that does spells but also gets up close you can do that there's a lot of things you can do with half health it's very very good uh for new players just keep in mind that you don't gain proficiencies in this game uh very easily there's only a couple ways to do it so you might as well plan on not gaining proficiencies and make sure you have the proficiencies that you want from your class halflings make excellent rogue characters because they have high dexterity lightfoot are naturally stealthy making them harder to detect so if you want to make a rogue type character you're probably looking at the lightfoot halfling or it's very very good candidate for that they also have lucky there which makes it so that anytime you attack or do anything really with a dice roll if you get one then you automatically roll which is an excellent excellent bonus the strongheart halfling is not stealthy like the lightfoot halfling is however it does have more health for the constitution and it's resilient to poison so this is probably going to make it a little bit better in combat at staying alive so maybe if you don't want to be quite like a sneaky rogue or something like that or maybe you want to play a ranged character this might be a little bit better for just straight up combat once you've finished selecting your race you're going to want to go to appearance and customize just how your character looks there's tons and tons of options for appearance in baldur's gate 3. this is going to take you quite a while probably but look through figure out exactly how you want your character to be to look that's obviously all up to you i'm not going to tell you how to do that whatsoever but once you're done with that you're going to jump over to origin now that you're back in origin you're going to name your character if you haven't already and you're going to pick your background the reason we've waited until now is because now you have a better idea of how your character is going to play and looking through the background you can select the proficiencies for that character that best fit the style of play of that character maybe it's their stealthy or persuasive or maybe they have insight no matter what it is you're going to pick the background if you're talking about min maxing not role playing obviously you're going to pick the one that is best suited that's going to help that character the most and you're going to take those next up we're going to take a look at skills in baldur's gate 3. skills are what you use to make checks throughout the game to see if you did you know deduce things from a character or maybe you pick a lock or maybe you spot something a trap etc so throughout the game you're going to you know do these things and skills are what's going to make this possible now when you make your character you're going to have different proficiencies that you have locked in based on your race or your your class that you choose or maybe your background and these are going to be like a little solid box that's kind of gold looking this means that you cannot not take these you cannot not be proficient with these because something gives it to you so these are you're always going to have proficiency with those but then you're going to pick two skill proficiencies from the list that is determined by your race or your class and you can pick from that list depending on what that is again this is another opportunity to sort of round out your character and fill in what sort of things you want to do with your character whether you want them to be stealthy or you want to be persuasive etc you can shore up some of those here just like you did with backgrounds once that's finished you're going to hop all the way over to abilities and abilities are really going to determine how well your character performs in certain situations whether you have additional numbers added to your role or subtracted so you're going to want to spend some time here and really figure out what you want to do there is also a use recommend button if you're new to dnd this will populate abilities for you that's recommended based on what's worked in dnt in the past and what you know a lot of players typically use when they're playing these classes keep in mind though that it only distributes the points you have left so if you've got like halfway through your ability district point distribution on your own and then you hit it it's gonna like go okay based on where you are this is what you should do but if you wanna do it from scratch make sure you take all the points out and then hit use recommend one important point i wanna note here when making your character is that you wanna aim for even numbers if possible for instance if you have 12 dexterity you're going to have plus one added to roles that use dexterity this would be like attack rules with a dexterity type weapon or maybe saving throws that use dexterity etc or some sort of skill check that uses dexterity but if you go from 12 to 13 you don't get any additional to your added to your roll but once you go from 13 to 14 you get plus two to your rolls so you always want to try and aim for even numbers when possible in order to get the best benefit from your abilities once that's finished the very last thing you're going to do is create your dream mate this means you're going to pick a character that you are attracted to you're going to get to pick their voice their hair their race their appearance the sort of character that you would dream about in your wildest fantasies and i won't tell you why that you need to do that because i don't want to spoil anything for you but this is going to be the very last thing you do obviously you're free to do this however you want and then you are done with character creation i hope this video has helped you get off to a good start creating your character in early access if you need more information be sure to check out our races video which goes a bit more in depth for each race and our classes video which goes a bit more in depth on each class when selecting that class as well as the class guides that will be coming shortly that are going to go deep deep dive into the classes and what you can do at each level of these classes these are going to take a little bit of time because i got to get to you know higher levels with each class i don't know exactly how high we're going to go but look for those if you need more specific details on the classes and also be sure to check out the wiki because we're going to have all the data on there for what you can do at each rank of each class so you're going to want that information when planning your character [Music] [Music]
