[Music] good morning and welcome to footage OSes photo moment the first live daily photo show on YouTube every weekday morning 9:30 a.m. Pacific if you're not watching life you should be it's so much fun when you're watching live like all my good friends here who are tuning in from all over the world is just such an amazing thing to do this I just got to share this look at all those people that are already tuned in this morning come on now so I can reach it all these folks already tuned in watching commenting away which by the way puts points out something if you are watching live and you do want to get my attention type at photo Joseph in front of your question that just puts my name in red as you saw on that little preview there so that I know that you've got a question for me we are going to do a two-part show today we'll split this out into a commentary so you have questions that are not related to the engine Ferno which is the topic oh the day then hold on to those we'll hit them up afterwards what if I water anything a little housekeeping I don't know housekeeping for those of you who didn't see it who if you're following along the whole scammer story the police came and knocking at my door yesterday so the story has grown legs and it's continued is very very exciting and interesting but I'm not gonna give it away you're gonna have to go watch the video I'll link to that up here because that's something you definitely want to check out and watch if you haven't yet um alright let's let's get into this thing so today's topic is the Animus ninja infernal this is something I have been promising to talk about for a long time I've had it for longer than I care to admit Adam Moses asked me just pass this along to the next vlogger heard I've been kind of ignoring their emails maybe that's why they keep ignoring mine I think no it's different people so I am stoked on this thing it is super super cool now I have I have to admit that I haven't gotten as much real use the kind of like really critical use out of it that I would like to have done in the time that I've had it because my entire focus the last couple months has been this GHI training for which I wanted this for not to do back-end recording but to actually use in some of the videos and I got all that that's all done now which is awesome that's done and out and all those videos are recorded and I can finally now pass this along so before I did of course I needed to do a photo moment on it and I want to tell you I'm gonna do some kind of feature overviews and tell you some of the things I've learned about it some of the sinful you get from spec pages and we'll start with some specs and some of it are just going to be experienced with the g-h 5 directly so let's first talk about what it is the whole purpose of this why would you buy this thing so this thing is it's cutting her open look at some nice views here this is a little over the shoulder we got it over the shoulder beer so you'll be able to see the interface here I also have my standard iOS view so you can see the menus a bit more clearly you can see those on the over-the-shoulder view but it's a little bit easier to see them there and that is actually a pass through which is kind of interesting is passing through out of this through my normal switcher and then obviously our camera angle here so I'm gonna be switching around quite a bit as we as we run through the show today so what is this thing so this thing is a seven-inch pro res recorder very high er is very bright screen that allows you to see and record your image while you're out and about shooting on a much bigger screen than what you get on your LCD here and on a much higher quality than what you can capture internally at its most basic that's what it is it's a big external screen and a recorder of course it's a lot more than that but that's the most basic fundamental if you look at Adam Moses website they have a bunch of these different things I own an earlier version that's called the ninja assassin which is really designed for the gh4 this is the ninja Inferno design for the gh 5 obviously works with any other camera with an HDMI output on it but but it has some features that are really for this camera now the price is $1,000 so 989 US and that's if you don't know anything about what it does you probably think it's kind of a lot like you know the camera is 2 grand another half another grand for this so you know why would I do that but as you learned what it is capable of and what it's designed for and you realize the combination of these two pieces so $3,000 between the camera obviously not including lenses but the camera and the recorder and what I can do you kind of go oh I have to spend almost 10 times that to do that with any other system and that's really the critical key component so let's just let's not bury the lead let's just get right into the main reason that you would buy this if you are shooting with the gh 5 and this is obviously this is not for your everyday shooter this is a higher-end production unit this is something that you're going to do if you're doing film productions commercials and so on and you want the absolute utmost in quality so this camera the gh 5 forgetting about the animals for a second the gh 5 kids shoot as you all know of course in 4k Ultra HD it can shoot at 8-bit 60 frames per second or can shoot at 10 bit 30 frames per second so the first thing that this allows you to do is combine those two higher ends with this you can record it 10 bit 60p and that's straight up is a huge deal if you want to record 10 bit to get your up most flexibility and color grading that's 10 bit if you want to shoot in 60 p well that's the inferno so that gives you that combination right there plus while you're recording your 10 by 60 p you are also shooting in 4 to 2 not 4 to 0 no this is a color space to a color space designation I don't want to get into the whole 4 2-0 vs. 4 - 2 there are some really really great videos on YouTube already about this just just going to youtube type 4 - 2 verses 4 to 0 and you'll find all kinds of videos that get way more techie geeky than I'm capable to do on my own but suffice it to say 42 is better significantly and the camera internally does 4 to 0 when X when you're recording externally you have the ability to enable 4 to 2 so you get for 2 to 10 bits 60p on this device for to 0 8-bit 60 or 10 bit 30 internally and then finally you have the recording format so when you're recording internally on the camera recording to to MPEG all right it's m4v format it's mpeg-4 format when you're recording to the image inferno you're recording in pro res and pro res is not something to be taken lightly Perez is a phenomenal format now many of you know that I used to work at Athol and when I was at Apple I was in the pro apps division and Pro Apps was developed and released while I was there and I had the pleasure of showing pro res on stage 4 it was the first time but anyway whatever I was showing it on stage at IBC and Amsterdam this has got to be gone this has got to be like 12 13 years ago now it's quite it's been around for a while and the way that we demoed it was to show the quality we showed it in a split screen next to a completely uncompressed 444 uncompressed video signal so we had the footage that was captured with no I did a remote camera but at the time but it was captured with I was captured - uncompressed 444 which means that it had to be captured to an external drive array we had this huge driver ray in the back backstage to be able play this thing back that's insane now we put this up on screen in a split screen right next to Apple ProRes HQ which is the hyerin you've got ProRes HQ pro sports you too and pro as LT those are the three grade so we HQ of course is the highest quality and the video footage as i recall was a ticker-tape parade now if you know anything about compression you know that anything that's moving quickly is harder to compress and a ticker tape is basically every pixel on the screen is changing at the same time it's pure insanity so pro res when we put ProRes HQ up to 4 4 4 uncompressed you couldn't tell the difference and this is projected on a huge screen people walk up stick their noses up to it you just you couldn't see it it was amazing it's amazing the quality that you get in pro res so that is what this this device is capable of recording it records it to a SSD drive so now if you you can buy similar type recorders from lots of other companies a black magic makes one that's a very nicely competitive product that's considerably less expensive but it records 2 SSD and it doesn't do the 10 bit 60p thing and it doesn't have the high NIT screen which we'll be getting into a moment on here but if you're looking at a device if you're looking at a recorder and I bring this up really because I was having a conversation with someone on in the YouTube comments here about this and I think it's worth mentioning you all know obviously I'm a huge fan of Blackmagic products clearly and use a lot of them got the camera yesterday etc etc but when it records to one of these it is still recording pro res you can get the ax business only 32 gigs but you can get these what 128 or 256 gigs I think it that's that's they're getting expensive right so I had a bunch of thirty twos and you're popping 30 Tuesday and you're recording only a few minutes at a time before you having to swap the card out being able to put in a terabyte SSD in this is half a terabyte but being able to put in a terabyte SSD into this thing makes a huge difference so to me if you're recording pro res recording pro res to an SD card it's a combination that doesn't make sense in my head if I'm doing pro res I really really wanted to this and these devices don't record to MPEG right you don't have the option to say Oh gimme mpeg-4 instead no it's is ProRes or DNxHD so if you're an avid user you DNxHD I have no idea how do you next HD compares to Pro I only know first I'm sure it's very very good anyway so that's that's what this records - alright so that just slides on the back they're obviously pop that out replace it with a new new drive the other advantage of these things I mean granted you're talking much bigger file but the advantage of these things is that files copy off of here very very quickly you get a cable that goes from whatever the heck was that eSATA I think that's right whatever that connector is 2 USB 3 plugging in your computer off you go you're copying files or previewing playing back straight off of the SSD okay what's you're gonna do so we spin this thing around so you do is I'll yanking went cables out so I can just show you the back of this will flip over to the other camera let's lock that into place and let's see is that Mew gonna work it's kind of working ok so that was you pull that thing out again carry there we go so that's how that slides in and out on there I've got this thing plugged into the power so it can be powered off the wall I'm just doing that for this you have dual battery slots which is very very cool so these take the kind of standard Sony what is this thing these are not even original Sony's these are third parties but the NP series batteries that's what these things take and you can put two on here which is extremely extremely cool now the ninja they're from the right angle the ninja there we go the two batters now so the Ninja Assassin one that I own we have the previous model only has the one battery and you know you think okay well that's it can't be that big of a deal but I have absolutely run into situations in the field where I'm shooting and a battery is about to go and you're getting really close and you don't want to interrupt the shot and you have no choice with the dual batteries on there that means you can hop off the battery so as one battery runs out it'll switch over to the other one you can pop off the dead batter you put a new one on there and keep on going so you can essentially record you know infinitely although obviously you're gonna run out a disk space it's sometimes at some point but the dual core of dual batteries on there is incredibly incredibly useful so there's that now let's let's get back around oh let's do this here let's go into this side here so hopefully this kind of stays in focus he's sort of so you've got dual HDMI in here this is the dual this is the HDMI input that's coming off of the gh 5 which as you well know of course has full size HDMI port I realize that a little bit dark in there but the camera is adjusted so you can see the screen better and then it has an HDMI loop out and that output there allows me to send this signal out to another quarter for one or two but most likely what you would do if you're on set is you would be sending this out to a larger monitor you got a director's chair they're sitting there they want to look at or you can hook it up to a wireless system transmit the HDMI signal wirelessly to other locations on set any number of things but the point is you can pass that through and you can also do some down reading on that so if we let's see if I can since we're talking about this let me get rid of this and let's switch over to this review here the straightens thing out again for you so it's a halfway-decent trying to angle this so that you don't get reflections all over the place for the over-the-shoulder view I think that'll work that's here I wanted to go to here and look at the output and so you can you have various output options here so you can each do you here if you set this to 4k to HD output you can turn it off or on or Auto and I'd mines on auto and that is outputting out to my to my converter right now so that I can do this and show you what the camera is actually saying so there's that alright so back into this so you've got various output options in there so that's what that that extra pass through is for in there you also have on here a remote control so you can do a start/stop recording with a remote trigger on there you've got sourcing around this side an XLR slash mic input so if you need to bring in audio separately you can do that through here it's a little breakout cable that goes into that little headphone jack and then the power button one thing that's really cool about this if I if I just press get this back into place if I press the power button once it's going to lock the screen let me get this trying to get this angled just right for you there there we go if I push it once it locks the screen so you see this is locked and right now okay it's set so that when it locks it turns off if I tap the screen it's gonna come back on but this allows me to save battery power so if I'm shooting in a situation where I want to hit record lock the screen but I don't need to be watching the screen I can have it automatically turn the screen off that will obviously save battery power so it'll last longer the nice little feature in there I'm used a lot on the Ninja Assassin okay so there's basic hardware anything else to talk about on the hardware the multiple quarter-twenty ports I guess not on the bottom but top not on the sides but top and bottom corner 20 ports and then you saw the power tap on the back there anything else I think that's basically it for the hardware for the physical armor ok let's talk about the screen and the screen is a really really big deal on this device it is a was it 1500 nits I think that's the right number I'm pretty sure that's right we're gonna pretend this right it's like crazy Brighton which is fine I'm looking at their web page here when I make sure you get that yeah 1500 nits that basically translates to really really bright and what that means for you is that you can see this outdoors even if you're shooting in sunlight you can see the screen which is remarkable because having come from the Ninja Assassin which it's screen is I want to say like seven or eight hundred nits like mighty Mila I could be wrong but it's it's considerably less bright I can't see that outdoors if I'm in the Sun I cannot see it you have to have a shade on it and even then it can be a little hard to see so this is a significantly brighter screen if you add a shade over it you're in the full Sun man you're like it's like staring into the Sun itself it's a really really bright screen it is also ten bit now this is a huge hugely important thing about this display and this is one of the things that really sets us apart from other other devices the 10 bit display on here isn't just like oh look I can see more colors if you're shooting v log on the gh 5 you can preview HDR on this screen now I can't show this to here without I this is one of the problems of doing this live I can't show a I can't set up like a really good HDR type environment here and show the difference in the screens you're gonna have to a take my word on it and B go to their website look because there's some demo videos on there I also can't do it I would normally do and go out and shoot and record the screen through another recorder because the display that you see on screen and all the controls there's no that doesn't output like the gh 5 you know you've got the menu system you know like you see oops wrong one like you see here we're gonna bring up the menu you see all that there's no option to output the menu system from the ninja out over HDMI so I can't record that other than pointing a camera at it you know like this so a little bit limited there in in how I can demo this so for that regard adjust you're gonna have to kind of take my word on it but do go to the website look at some of the demo videos in there but what this means having this 10 bit screen being on a preview HDR while shooting v-log means that you can see on the screen an image that's got the dynamic range that you're seeing with the human eye a course well closer to it let's say then what you would get with a normal screen you know obviously the human eye is still kind of awesome so if you've got a scene like the video that I showed before you know I will stand I still haven't loaded up here yeah I do so if you were to look at a scene like it's right preset there we go like this so this is in in DaVinci Resolve if you're looking to seem like this are still final cut yeah I still final cut up as well this scene here let me turn off the luck that I've put on this it's got a nice and big on there and there we go so that's scene there that's what the native pro res V log file looks like very very flat but you can see this kind of detail with the contrast and saturation brought back into it and still see all of that detail in an HDR preview on this display that's crazy cool okay so now that's just while you're out shooting but the second thing you can do with this 10 bit display is use it when you're editing back home so this is one of those kind of does one of this kind of like catch-22 things if you're you're shooting 10-bit but you're editing on an 8-bit monitor which is what you have if you're editing on any Mac screen or any standard PC screen and you know unless you go out and buy a really expensive 10 bit monitor your editing on an 8 bit display so you can't see everything that is actually in the file but you can take the ninja Inferno and hook it up via the HDMI out on your Mac or PC and turn it into a second monitor and then use that in final cut or result whatever using as your preview monitor so you can see your image in full 10 bit glory on here while you're editing that is unbelievably cool so this device it's like it just doubled its value in that point because you you're able to use this not only why you shouldn't but actually while you're editing as well this is insanely insanely cool so that's there's that I got ages head to tell you about that part of it ok um let's see here let me show you the basic let's talk about how you set it up to shoot this 10-bit 60p because that's a really important point if we look let me look into the camera here on the smelling get this set up so I'm going to show you let's go in to get the right mode up here okay so we're looking at the camera display I'm gonna go up to the menu and if I go into my camera settings in here I look at my record quality you can see you'll see that I can shoot in 4k 8-bit 60 or 4k 10 bit 30 and that's the that's what we were talking about before that's the internal recording capabilities but nowhere on the camera will you find a setting that says 10 bit 60 because the camera is not capable of doing it internally so you have to enable something else to get 10 bit 60 out for the ninja so let's go back to this and alright so we're going to we go to this how we do is so we set it to 4k 8 bit 60 which I think is what it set you already yes it is and then we scroll down well yeah in here you can scroll down or I've already got this set up as savings in my mind menu but we'll just scroll down so we're on the say we're on themes or on the what does this menu call it we're on the motion picture menu on page 4 or 4 and you see I've highlighted sorry here we go highlighted HDMI record output click on that you go down to the bottom it says 4k 60p mode what are you outputting for 2 0 8 bit or 4 to 2 10 bit let me go back to 4 - 0 8 bit and I think the screens gonna go dark for a second yeah let me just switch over well it resets itself ok back to this so there's 4 - 0 8 bit if I know and this is what the camera is normally shooting at if I go to 4 - to 10 bit it warns me it says you cannot record to the memory card that's the internal SD card with the setting when the HDMI cable cable is connected do you want to proceed and so what this is telling me is it's just saying hey yo you cannot do 10 bit 42 internally and the camera will still even if you enable this it'll still record 4 - 0 8 bit internally until you plug in an HDMI port as soon as you plug in an HDMI cable it goes oh diverting all energy to all resources to 4 to 4 to 10 bit on the HDMI out and it does not record internally but that's ok because that's the whole point of the external box right that's why we're recording externally here so I hit yes I'm gonna go in hit yes it's going to resync and then I'll bring it back up there we go bring this back up here and now it is set to 40 to 10-bit let me get these no you're not seeing them right so they're 14 to 10 bit okay the other thing I want to show you here that is super awesome is this HDMI recording control so this allows me to start and stop recording on the external recorder on the ninja by pushing the shutter button on the camera so if you don't have this capability if you have a camera that doesn't have the capability or using a recorder that doesn't support it this is I guess I think it's part of the HDMI 2 protocol I think but not every device supports this you would have to hit record on the on the external recorder yourself right so you've got your camera all set up you're ready to shoot and then you got to reach up if you've got it mounted on top of your camera or somebody was holding it has to hit record and then stop recording on that as well but with this HDMI record function the HTML recording control once this is enabled here and connected I can now hit record on the camera and it's going to start recording on the recorder so let me let me set this up I'm going to let's go back to the over-the-shoulder view here and we just get rid of this waveform under it's taking out my screen space and I'm going to enable this so let's go in here make sure it's turned on so HDMI recording control and turn that on here so again this is the this is what we're looking at here are going to turn this on and when I do that you'll notice now on the top left there you see it says HDMI there's got a little pause symbol on it let's go back to the over-the-shoulder view and if I push so I'm gonna do this I'm gonna push the button on here and you see now that the HTML recorders can is record you see the red box around it it shows that it's recording you've got a timecode and it's all stopped you know that's all there so now if I hit the record button again it's now going to stop and away we go so that is incredibly incredibly useful that's something that I was lacking actually okay I'm gonna be honest this might have been didn't and I just never knew about it cuz I'm saying that wasn't there I'm thinking you know I don't actually know if it wasn't there it might have been there but it's regardless it is a really really cool feature so that's something you definitely want to enable if you're recording like this but on the same token if the camera is on a tripod you've got a long HDMI cable and you're standing there with you in front elsewhere in your recording you can trigger the recording of course from the device itself so you can just start stop recording on there which is really really cool okay we got a lot more to look at before we continue on there I'm going to do a couple things I want to look at questions that may have come up that are related to what we're talking about here we'll skip past any ones that aren't we'll save those for later and also I want to remind you of course about the GHI of training that I had more working oh so oh so hard on so this that sounded really bad this recorder here is just part of the training that I had just finished recording I did a whole chapter about v-log and this that was by far the most complex chapter and by far the least needed chapter because the fewest people out there will need that one but I have a very comprehensive training all over the place on what this what this camera is capable of so please by all means do check that out jeez five training.com read all about it on that website and you can still pre-order it because even though it's done recording - the intro outro doesn't count even though it's done recording it's not finished editing so until the last video is uploaded ready for you to download you will still be able to buy at the pre-order price been five shuttles asking what's the discount code well with discount code for 50% off the Animus yeah it's called Cody jail that's the code alright Oh see I'm just going back and we'll see if there's any comments there questions that are related to this that I want to do Frances is asking the jh5 does not record fortune to internally at all no right here let's uh okay now I'm saying that I'm going to now I'm going to double triple verify oh no it does sorry it does do four to two at let's go here I can't know all these specs off the top of my head seriously it's too many of them okay so here we're going through the options in here so if you do 4k ten bit 30 you can get 42 so there you see 42 10 bit long up but you're not getting this 60 obviously internal and let's see here what are the ones the this one that is 4k 24 P for 2 to 10 bit so yeah the 10 bits are for 2 - all right good so the 10 bits are for 2 to the 8 bits are 4 to 0 so there you go that's that's the differentiator that's internal so you do still get the 42 but obviously it's MPEG and it's not 60 P if we go up to this one here so you go this 8 bit 60 it says ports you 8-bit but then when you switch the mode over in the hdhd record output and we set it to 40 to 10-bit so there's your 4k 60p 8-bit mode is actually outputting for two to ten bits so there's that hopefully that clarifies things for you sorry that wasn't clear before um alright let's see what else anything else for addressing now okay Zachary's say if you have the dual XLR add-on so he's talking about the XLR one for the g h5 on the g h5 can you pass the audio to the Blackmagic in front of via HDMI yeah it has to yeah I don't see why it wouldn't because it's designed to record that to the internal memory card so yeah it's gonna pass that out of four HDMI so yes yeah absolutely has to work that way yes Martin says rumors are luck start pulling out of the market that's not a rumor this happened it's insane Bart says does the GH 500 triggering the items over HDMI I just showed you that um so that is yeah that is crazy cool okay um anything else here discount code just hahaha just realize I'm drinking from my Atomos water bottle that's funny okay alright good excellent any other questions about this going throw em open screen will scroll back again before we end this questions that are not about the Animus hold onto them welcome back to my for the show on the the commentary part okay so let's take a look at some of the interface things that you have on the Animus itself so let's go back to my shoulder there we go remote camera over the shoulder view and let's just take a look yes I'm going through you're not gonna do I'm gonna turn off the the HDMI info display so that we have less stuff showing up on screen so that is off now so now we look over the shoulder we're only gonna see the native signal out of the camera without all the screen overlays on it okay audio level meters you see these down here at the bottom you can see right now that it's clearly picking up audio and that's just from the internal mics on my camera if I tap on that you can see a bigger view of that and if you have multiple channels you have this coming in here so presumably oh you know I can test this hey Ryan grab me the the XLR one it is probably on it's probably under the big table on the shelf under the big demo table I don't know why I'm looking is if you can see me but I will try it because I think I will hook up I've got another mic I can plug it in and I would I want to see if we see because I don't really know yeah if we'll see the audio showing up on these other channels thank you so already so here we go let's do this let me take this guy plug that into the air lock that in a little light comes on it's got power and then I'm going to take this microphone this is a fun of life who else does this seriously you know I got a car we had to block him I got a comment the other day he got telling me to quit talking so much and to plan my stuff better and he was really rude we blocked him come on guys this is life nobody else does this life nobody alright uh so we got this mic XLR gonna go XLR into and put one on here and let's hear oh I guess no said is still just gonna show up as input alright cuz it's one and two right this doesn't go out to channels 3 & 4 so if we look at the where are we remote camera let's get this out of the way okay so now probably this you can actually see trying to Terrell I'm trying to do both so you can see me tapping the mic and you can see the meter running there right so you seeing that meter there so yes so there's the answer to that question yes it absolutely hundred-percent does send the audio through there through there let's get this thing out of the way try to break my studio while I'm doing it okay let's just get rid of this thing it's just in the way now don't you do any more thank you very much Brian for bringing that in and okay so those audios let's go back to this looking at this so we've got our audio controls on here you can choose to monitor if when you're on the headphone jack you want to monitor those you can disable channels so if you're getting audio coming in from channels you don't want you can disable that and then this is for the analogue audio if you've got analog audio coming in you also have under audio options gain controls and also slipping control so you can slip your content off bias the audio delay off by up to how many frames but if you've got and I had to use this before because remember that the HDMI video will have an inherent delay of a few frames so if you're recording audio and video on separate devices right it's not all passing through the camera so if you're using the XL break out on here you've got audio going into there it is likely gonna be a few frames out of sync from your video so that allows you to compensate for that um see one look at an audio guy that's good in the phone audio okay let's see what else we got in here headphone jack volume controls on here obviously record play and the menu the menu takes you into things like file naming you can control your file names so it's just set to NJ ninja NJ a ninja Inferno but you can change that whatever you wants you can type in it's kind of a kludgy interface you think with this they put a keyboard on there but you can change the naming on there that'll name your files a date/time something tells me this isn't set right but you can set your date and time on their other display options brightness oh this is really handy right here so this flip allows you to flip the display so that if you're mounting it upside down for any reason which is something I have had to do many many times this allows you to flip that display which is super useful you also have a tally light that you can turn on so that the entren talent of the talent knows that you're recording and then this is the option to so display off when it's locked so now that I've disabled that when I lock it it just goes locked but the display stays on if i unlock the display and turn that on now when I hit the lock it the power button wants to lock it it's locked and the display goes off so super super useful feature to have on there and then you have some basic brightness camera color controls on there as well okay let's back out of here what else we got timecode configuration stuff record Renea we don't get all that that's just getting too far into the into the weeds on here and then your firmware everything okay we don't need to get all that stuff all right let's see here um what we're come to save these guys for last up across the top on here oh this little guy if you ever see this I know it's hard for you to see on the screen but there's a little kangaroo his name is Skippy that is skipping a kangaroo and if skipping the kangaroo shows up and tells you that you have basically you've dropped a frame alright you have had some kind of interruption in this signal and that is on right now because I've been doing the plugging unplugging the cable which is obviously going to cause a drop frame if you change formats on the export on the camera it'll do that it'll drop frame but what I found on these devices that's really cool is even if you if you change formats or even unplug your HDMI cable plug it back in if while you're recording it'll immediately start recording again it creates a new file and obviously whatever you're gonna be missing whatever you were missing when the cable is disconnected but as soon as you plug it back in it continues reporting which is incredibly useful because imagine if you will if you just had a loose cable connection for whatever reason and it just wiggled just enough loose for a moment and then it went back into place if that stopped your recording you know that that it happened that'd be really bad but it continues to record as soon as you get that connection back again so yes you're gonna have an interruption in recording but at least it continues to record so that is really definitely very very useful Bart is asking right now do you know what the HDMI audio delay is on the gh 5 Adam most products allow you to adjust the audio recording by a few frames so it syncs up that's what we did 5d mark 3 was three frames delayed the gh4 was four frames delayed three and a half to four is what I found the g5 I haven't measured it but it is less we've seen that here on this show when I've used the gh 5 as my live camera while sending my audio through my mixing board we have seen a lesser delay that we saw with the gh4 but there is still a delay I have not measured it I would guess it's down to three maybe even two frames but I'm speculating but it was noticeably less which is awesome very awesome okay um all right it's back to it unless you were worried so that was Skippy up there I'm you tap Skippy and Skippy goes away here you see a display of what your frame rate is right now it says 4k uhd fifty nine nine four that's what's bringing what's what's coming in and you can change various things on the input on here you can HDMI trigger and you can toggle that on and off here as well you can do a color correction for the specific it's funny specifically for the 5d Mark 3 color correction I don't know why I don't know 5d Mark 3 but there you go and then recording you can do some pulldown on the recording on there if you need to and this is really neat you have this pre-roll function so if you turn on pre-roll then whenever you hit record you will have the last how many seconds what if I wrote that down you will have a certain amount of pre-recorded video that will go straight to the disc yeah and hey I didn't have that written down my notes it's kind of like shooting in 6 K photo mode in the pre burst because was called pre burst on the gh 5 essentially the device is always recording and it's caching the last however many seconds it is so that when you hit record it doesn't start recording from there it starts recording from a few seconds back this is incredibly incredibly useful if you're doing any kind of fast action spontaneous Oh something happens or is happening I want to hit record now because obviously by the time it happens you hit record you've missed it but by having that ability so it's caching if you hit record as the action happens when it starts you've actually started recording before that so you get that little time machine feature built-in incredibly useful but obviously also drains the battery quite a bit more because it is essentially always recording so just something to keep in mind but it is there you do have that capability which I absolutely love um you can have to tell me you see that again right okay so that's that let's go back in and let's hear anything else in your Oh output so I think we looked at this already yeah on the output you can change the output on there whew - so you down res on your output signal if you want up here you have pro res 8q so here you can choose your product your codec do you want ProRes or DNxHD things you guys to see right now I'm sorry there's no better way for me to do this but there you can switch between Perez and DNX and if you're in pro res then your quality is HQ 4 to 2 or LT and what's really cool is down here it gives you a guide of with this current drive in space how much space you have left so with this drive at whatever space is left on here I can record 20 minutes at HQ 31 minutes at 42 or 45 minutes at Elte and an avid dnxhd the same thing HQ x - 2020 HQ x + HQ I mean only what the differences are and then s Q and LB so obviously Lite variants of those so you have that all that on there and then when it on the top that's just a guy down at the bottom that doesn't actually do anything but in the top as you switch through these you get your recording time over here listed as well and also shows you at the top what your recording time is left once you once you hit OK on that so we're gonna leave it in HQ hit OK and that takes us through there this is file naming so if you want to change your font I mean this is really neat this is not new to the inferno a lot of these things I'm sharing right now are not new to the inferno that's that's been around for a while it's just part of the operating system but these are really cool features that I want to show you so on here configure file name I love this you can name your file whatever you want we'd look at that already but you also have the ability to add scene and shot numbers to it so you can automatically have sequential shot numbers on your shot so obviously using a slate is a great thing if you're in a big production but if you're doing something smaller and you just want to be able to keep track of the shops a little bit better you can set up scene and shot and prisoner and I've used that before when recording using the the ninja assassin in here doing canoeing production shoots for clients I've used that to keep track of the shot numbers shot intake numbers it's a really nice feature to have in there because your file names just have that built into it automatically very cool all right let's see here what else do we got let's go back to the view and so it's just keep all these things up here are our buttons the time if I hit the one with the time on it what's the time and the media button it tells me the media I can format the media from there I can rename the device and I could also export HTML which I guess just did it that is cool because down here you see this little flag you have all these different things you can mark on a shot you can work favorites you can mark over you so basically tags that you can apply to your shot while you're recording so if you're you know take and you know you're going oh that's that's a great take will mark that as a circle take or a favorite we can you know reject it mark it as overexposed bad I there's different keywords if you will that you can apply in there in the neck and sex more export it is part of the XML file which is super useful if you're into that sort of thing ok and then at the top let's go back to this view real quick at the top here you'll see there's a little battery indicator so you see that one and the two batteries both of them appear to be quite low why I thought I had any battery in there guess not and the DCI tells me there's DC on there and again I know super hard to see on there but there it is okay now let's go into the bigger stuff on here let's go for there we go let's go for this so here you've got your waveform displays so you can look at your waveform you can look at an RGB parade you can look at a vector scope it's not this cold I forget I think that's right or whatever the heck that is actually no idea what that is but you have different views on here the waveform of course being the most useful and you can change the size on that so you can have a little one down here a bigger one that goes across the bottom or overtakes your entire screen clearly that's a bit much but I find what I'm shooting at minimum having this down there is fantastic because then as I'm adjusting my exposure I can see the waves on there and just - just to kind of make the point here let me you zoom in on this a little bit and so I'm looking at this gray card this we're looking at a where's the camera set to view log right now and as I adjust the exposure you can see on here there's the white there's the gray and the black it's kind of hidden down there amongst us other crud but there's my I can see where that's falling on my on my way four monitors there which is very very useful let's see transparency of that waveform display brightness of the waveform displays you have controls like that in there monitor assists this is very very useful we talked a lot in the past about focus peaking on the gh five and how incredibly useful that is if you're shooting a manual focus to have focus peaking means as you're focusing as you get closer and then ultimately into focus you get little lines that show up little sparkle dots whatever just pixels to show up on your scene on whatever is in focus that is awesome on the gh five and having that on a little LCD display here but having that on the inferno when you're shooting manually again is even more useful just because it's such a big screen so you have that ability to see your image you're seeing much larger but you still have that focus peaking for critical focus so if I turn that on let me you know actually put this over to the focus target so that'll really help us to see what this looks like let's do the over-the-shoulder here I'm going to turn on just that one that's on and make sure this is in manual focus and there we go as I do that you can see see little blues so the blue showing up in the senators uh boom that is you probably can't really see that but it's showing up there as the focus beam you have a lot of other things on here like zebra overlays false-color a whole bunch of different readouts in here and in this I want to actually look at my notes real quick cuz there's a couple things about the false colors that I wanted to tell you that I can't really show here but they're worth pointing out Oh blue only so there's a blue that's what it was there some one I think I want to talk about there's a blue only channel so you can view the blue channel only on here which apparently this is news to me I'd wanna say just read this in manual is for noise monitoring because the blue Channel apparently is where most your noise is gonna show up so if you're really concerned about noise and you want a really monitor and see if you're getting excessive noise in your shot you should even really low light really high so whatever you can monitor just blue channel and that will allow you to see the noise more clearly who knew so that's awesome right that's a way to really on set while shooting have critical critical view of your noise on there I love it questions coming like does it have focus assistant just as I shown that Marvin says I'm getting to understand why you've had the Pete the unit so long it's an awesome piece of kid it really is not in my budget at the moment but my son it's more work look how's your son's got to get more working at you go Marvin alright let's see here let's move on now I think I just love this device so oh and here's another one let's go back to this view turn off the false color I can zoom into the scene here we go for focusing so I've zoomed into one two one here so this allows me to zoom into the shot for again critical critical focus so if I need to do that I can know what tuna one doesn't work so wonder one I can toggle I don't know why I can't go to two to one no idea maybe because it's Fork I don't anyway so that's another option I don't know why it's not available and your zebras by the way you have your zebra thresholds you've enabled zebras let me crank up the ISO on this so we can make the Zebras trigger and go here like this if I can make it trigger probably not I guess I'm gonna have to open up the shutter all the way I still can't quite get it to trigger anyway if you oh there we go I'll lower the threshold there if I lower the zebra threshold you can see how the Zebras are showing up on here so very very useful to have and of course if you are shooting no matter what you're shooting when they're shooting v-log or shooting standard format being able to keep an eye on your zeros to know if you've hit a threshold of overexposure it's a really good way to make sure you don't lose very clipping your highlights okay so there's that now let's gonna turn that off because that's just annoying and finally let's get into the record mode goodies this is where we can do some of the really fun cool stuff we bring the brightness down on the screen a little bit here so if that's the dimmest setting on the screen so we're right now looking at this in a rec 709 preview but here's the atom HDR so if i go to this and this is what I wish I could show you better live and I just can't but Adam HDR has first of all a series of presets on here camera you can choose a are a JVC red fuji film rec 2100 sony canon Panna there he goes a Panasonic so there's Panasonic set for the atom HDR now I was at NAB you may recall earlier this year and Jeremy the CEO of the company was up doing a presentation about this and he said that what they're trying to do is have it automatically sense what camera you've got and set that atom HDR monitoring appropriately for your camera and configuration so that'd be great so as now you have to kind of cycle through it but it'll pair it'll set that automatically once they figured that out because there are a couple other options in here you can switch your camera and you see rec.709 your gamut on here between rec 709 and V gamut and then this is the most important thing you can change your brightness range now I know you can't see this right here but right here it tells me it says very small text 1600 percent of rec 709 so I'm at SDR standard dynamic range plus four stops so with this particular view I'm getting plus four stops and it goes all the way up to plus five point seven now that doesn't mean that you can just shoot willy-nilly at that as I understand it you really need to set this for what's appropriate for your camera and I believe with the g-h five I want to say it's two stops but that seems kind of low for my experience with this and this is something that you really it's gonna take a little bit more using and fully understanding of but when I did ask about how to know where to appropriately set that I was told basically just set it until as long as you see all the detail and until it's not blown out well I should I thought was a little bit curious because I thought it was a little bit more dictated by the hardware restrictions but maybe not so regardless whatever your scene is you can preview that HDR on there by dragging the slider and that's the view that I was talked about earlier that you can see on here because it's a 10 bit display and then when you're grading HDR on your computer you can use this as that external monitor external display and see exactly what you're getting crazy-cool okay it's kind of it's funny it's one of those things where you can create it but then you put it up on YouTube and nobody can see it because nobody has an HDR monitor you know if this is tech that's ahead of its time but the fact that you can do it now is phenomenal and obviously given the right viewing situation people can see that they just have to see it on am on an easy-chair display and that doesn't mean just just as an aside in case you're going oh hold on a second nobody can see 10-bit each jar then why would I bother shooting V log V log is still absolutely 100% massively beneficial when your final output is 8-bit because remember you can take those extra stops of dynamic range scrunch them down and get that incredible shadow and highlight detail in the same shot you're just compressing that down into eight bits but you're holding onto that data whereas before you are clipping it and throwing away data so definitely still an awesome thing to have um here what anything else oh here oh there's just a couple of little things on here you've got kind of an auto hgr you hit that at auto calibration for the current scene HDR output so if you are if you want to send ACR out over this monitor you can do that but actually what happens on my display right now let me bring the exposure back down on here's bring this back down to normal if I so if I had enabled disabled that let's here I don't know if my current my other display will show a difference oh it does so you're getting kind of an hg NMR HDR yonder you're seeing a very subtle change in there probably if I change this to I wonder if you'll see any different probably not yeah barely but that is that button right there this so I was looking at this guy right here this HDR out right there that is toggling the HDR preview out over the HDMI out which is what's going into that other display that you were looking at here right got all that this whole pass through multiple connection things is a little confusing to follow but I think you don't think so I think this base of that we look at my notes and see was anything that I missed um heard set up focus peaking we looked at that low lots yeah we didn't look at lots okay so let's go back to this and back to this view so a custom look if I go to custom look over here just like on the g h5 i can load nuts into the ninja so that i can preview what my scene is going to look like with my grade or at least a starting grade applied to it this gets into something really cool so i've you all probably know i'm a final cut editor I love final cut right but it's color grading to leave a little bit to be desired dimension resolve is clearly like the mack daddy when it comes to color grading I've downloaded the beta started playing with it black magic owns it now right I started playing with the beta I figured out something pretty quickly that is insanely cool watch this let me bring up resolve on here and go to the Mac alright so this is resolved this is that shot that you saw earlier let me just redo reset this grades so we reset this grade on there and yeah so we're basically we're looking at our native shot and it's I know it's small on the screen there but I need a quick little auto color correct on there it's a little auto and you just say I want to change the curves on here so I do the change on the curves right okay so this is a look and oh maybe I want to add a little color into the into the game a little business ok let's done this as well alright cool man there's my look right I love that look that's the look if I go over here right click on this shot let me zoom into this can I come here oh hello why isn't oh there we go right click on this shot let me zoom into this here we go from this from DaVinci Resolve I can generate the 3d lut as a Panasonic bulut file that means I can create my own look in DaVinci Resolve export out of violet file pop that under the SD card pop that into my gh 5 and see my look my look that I designed on the gh 5 you can export a cube file and bring that into the inferno but yeah yeah the inferno reads the cube files so you can create your look in here export the LUT and bring that into either the g5 directly or into the Animas that's so cool that alone makes me want to learn how to use resolve as a color grader even if I don't use it as an editor except really good like Final Cut editor um clearly it is of the tool for doing your color grading so we could cool right ok that is everything right yes that's all my notes that's what I wanted to show you guys what do you think pretty cool right let me see what other questions of come up if there's anything about this and then we're gonna we'll end this and go on to other other questions remember if you have any questions specifically about this throw up now throw a nap footage of in front of it and we will address them let's see here jim says is wait and issue in the field and i've done quite a bit of shooting with in the field with the gh4 and the inferno and at that point it's on a cage right you can if you look at the Animus website they show we find a good picture of it they okay oh yeah this is great actually here they show this configuration here you can see there's an inferno on top of a gh 5 just on a little ball head that works that's fine a little cumbersome a little bit awkward so maybe not the ideal but you know it works and if you're set up in studio it's a lock shot it's totally fine I don't think I'd go out in the field holding it that way it's a little tenuous I want something a little sturdier than that but if we keep scrolling down on here you'll see samples just kind of sample setups here I think this is a well this is a whole gimbal ocation this is a much bigger cage but you can put a small cage and see if they have a small cage setup no I guess not you can do a small cage and that's something that I do I have a small cage the gh Bible was for the G for the gh 5/5 and our fine will sit in that and then you have connection points on it so you can connect you know your recorder you can record a touch of microphone whatever and I've done videos before I've shown that whole setup it's it's pretty awesome to have that obviously it's getting heavier at that point clearly it's gonna get heavier but when you ask if weight is an issue it really comes down to what you're comparing it to obviously it's heavier than the g5 without it obviously but it is significantly lighter still then a lot and pretty much any other rig with this capability I mean that I think that's something I can say pretty confidently that the gh 5 with any lens you want to put on there and then engine for a note in a cage even with a microphone attached is still gonna be lighter weight then the next camera up that will give you 10 bit 40 to 60 P recording I think that's a I don't know I haven't looked at out that I think I can say with reasonable confidence that that's true so for that quality you're still working with a much lighter more nimble rig and keep in mind that it's not all doesn't have to be all together right you can run a long cable you can have somebody following you like you have an audio guy following you you could have a video guy following you at this probably ideal but you could there's a lot of different ways to work it but don't but that would work um Marvin says if we missed anything we can always play you back yes you can and hope to get it the second time around I know this is a ton of insane info and you know a hundred percent straight up I might be getting some of these things wrong right I don't I'm not a most employee it's not like I study this thing night and day for the last couple of months but I think I got everything right so even if I got like 90% of it right or 80% of it right this is a phenomenal device no it is it's actually incredible if you're gonna buy one of these just incidentally if you're gonna buy one of these do scroll down and use my affiliate link please I would really appreciate that because you know show must go on okay um let's see yeah Jim horses are you gonna review this new smallholder focus monitor I've no idea what that is so send a link or tell me what there's I'll look it up but I would love to Bart says will the gh4 our trigger the animals over HDMI if you start recording using the Panasonic app oh that's a good question there's only one way to find out isn't there okay this is gonna be what we're gonna want to find this out I love these questions alright so he wants to know if I connect the app to the GH five the iPhone app and I hit record on here if it'll start recording on there so let's make sure first of all that itch and recording is on it is we saw that on there issue in recording is on it we can also see that because it shows that'll HDMI pot I'm sorry just get the display back but a papaya info display on there we go okay so there you can see at top left corner HDMI pause so that is there okay so let's just lose focus this and pretend to expose its properties it doesn't look totally crappy and there we go OOP that's under supposed what if it doesn't matter okay so if I hit on pushing the button on the camera it starts recording and push it again to stops recording okay so now what you want to know is if I connect it here so let's go into let me as well show this home screen let's go back to this and let's go to start over let's go to HDMI Wi-Fi Wi-Fi I mean turn on Wi-Fi oh my guess they're not going to see that so we'll take that off it has to think okay Oh TV out in progress okay Wi-Fi function see now I can my nothing to show that it's boring Wi-Fi function new connection well sure why not you probably see this new connection remote shooting and viewing and is now connecting my phone is let's see if launched my phone this launched wife on my phone how can I let me see can I guess we can do this mmm-hmm take this here you don't need that view anymore and let's get this and we're gonna start going to show you the iPhone view and we forgot to come up and seek and then we'll do a split screen on that one to see if there it is iPhone camera there we go so there's my Wi-Fi there's the gs5 at the top select that it will connect momentarily there it is that's connected and now let's launch the Panasonic app and connecting to the camera this is a great this is a great question this is a great test I'm excited to see if there's a little do this not Kay camera operation progress or remote operation and we should be seeing through the camera momentarily here monetarily here now I'm gonna let you in on a little secret doesn't always work I've had this issue before it doesn't want to connect and if this happens generally resetting the network settings hell up fixes it I wish I could tell you more but I can't but I know and we'll just leave it at that function cannot be using this time come on let's try this again let me just try one more time here connecting and then I'll try I'll do a whole reconnection again if you are if you're not interested in this go ahead and skip to the next video if you're watching this not live to jump to the commentary I will make sure this is the last thing we do I won't answer any more questions until we get into the commentary section so if you're not interested in this don't worry about it we'll switch we'll come back to that okay I'm gonna do a reset on the Wi-Fi on here so let's go to iOS view oh no I just disconnected that denied let's go to over the shorter view why not and I'm going to go into the reset know you can barely see this we're going to turn off focus peaking here it's making it hard to see my screen there we go kind of a lot applied to the entire thing including the menu system which is fabulous okay we're gonna go into the controls reset reset network settings why won't it let me because Wi-Fi is on that's why all right let's disable the Wi-Fi Wi-Fi function terminate Wi-Fi yes please this is an unfortunate truth in that the Wi-Fi connection doesn't always work exactly the way you expect it to all right so back in and reset network settings reset network settings yes they've been reset thank you reset the cameras pairing we will all right and then we go to go to Wi-Fi again Wi-Fi function new connection and remote shooting in view so now I go back to the camera and the only to force quit the force quit the app come back here we go force quit the app go into the settings wait for that to reconnect again and Jim Warren says that small HD focus I don't know what you mean okay select h5 again it's connected go home open the image app you can see on here you can kind of see it says if you have not Oh actually I phone established yes we do so find the right thing to click on yes under remote control and back to this view and let's see if it actually connects this time I've had it once I've had to do it this it just wouldn't connect I had to reinstall the app so top tip if you're running into this situation as I am right now reset the network settings on the camera if that still doesn't do it delete and reinstall the app and that should do it Oh operate the camera to connect it is asking me something I think it's because the HDMI let me get rid of this because I'm not seeing the full display no just as checking operate the camera to connect but I mean it's not asking me to do anything on the camera Wi-Fi Wi-Fi function terminate no I don't want to terminate sorry guys um man I hate it when this sort of thing happens I really wanted to test that that's a great great great great question and I am unable to test this right now hmm should we do the full all right let's do it let's just do we sister and recording mode on the camera okay wait hold on maybe it's gonna connect you know okay let's let's do it why not right this is troubleshooting this show just turned into troubleshooting your Wi-Fi connection to your GH five annoying but sometimes true sometimes necessary all right image app time for you to go away delete that and we're gonna do another reset on here just to make sure we have actually power cycle the camera so we just do a full power cycle on this guy bring this back on Bart you did not wreck the show this is a great it's not your fault this thing didn't work but it's a great question I think it's a really really good question I and I'm gonna do a reset again on this reset network settings reset network yes I do okay all right so now let's go back to the iPhone and connect find an app again Panasonic what was it called again oops I'm setting image apps there we go there it is this download that's ah that's good dad fast internet doesn't have the highest ratings this is probably why crap like this happens alright open any type Larsson notifications yes uses conditions okay I promise not to use this while flying an airplane or driving drunk okay and checking the camera so now we go back into the camera and let's set this guy up so Wi-Fi enable the Wi-Fi on here and waiting waiting waiting QB up into progress Wi-Fi function new connection remote shooting in view please connect to the Wi-Fi stand now go back to the camera up to the iPhone rather launch this you I'm gonna even just toggle my Wi-Fi on here just for giggles wait for that to find it there's my home my studio network and h5 will show up at some points momentarily always takes a longer to find I think that's an iPhone thing since it takes forever to find wireless networks there it is she's five okay that is Quinn Nick Dean connected now let's go back to the image app connecting everybody cross all your fingers and toes here it's asking so up here on the camera it is asking do I want to make that connection I say yes I do and it's thinking it's thinking it's thinking it's connected remote operation okay HTML record is still enabled if we go back to the remote camera view you can still see that they're all right ready for this moment of truth how do i can't show both of these well here let's do like this go up here I'll hold this up here and hit record recording video is not possible in current mode one Wow guess not that's too bad that would have been really cool though yeah I wonder if it is just because I said let me do that somewhere make sure it's not something else I'm gonna go and disable the HDMI record triggering HTML record control off and now let's try again so I can wait for camera operation progress to go way on here and there we go hit record oh video is still recording info bb's just because there's an hdmi connected that might be let's get rid of that let's go back to me as let's go back to this view now since there's nothing there to see and now i hit record and it's recording okay so it's just it's the fact that HDMI connection on there in the first place that's makes that on impossible in non non possible okay I'm going to I'm going to come back
