so finally got my hands on the Atomos ninja V external recorder you know people say ninja five I'm gonna go ninja V because I think that sounds a bit cooler anyway the first thing I wanted to do with this thing is to get a video out there a few guys to show you that newly-designed operating system that I must have made for this smaller screen and how you go about accessing all those professional monitoring tools they've jam packed into this compact external monitor if somehow you don't know anything about this screen or its the recorder the one thing I don't know I've separated them out there in that sentence if you haven't heard about it before which is quite impressive because you go online and it's been everywhere since it was announced pretty much then here at the headline specs the ninja V is Artemis is answer to a more compact solution than their largest Shogun range the V features a 5.2 inch 1000 nits HDR touchscreen that's capable of displaying over 10 stops of dynamic range is a 1920 by 1080 screen with 427 pixels per inch and just to put that in perspective the 2018 MacBook Pro with Retina screen has 220 pixels per inch through the HDMI input the ninja V can record 4k at up to 60 frames per second in various flavors of Tempah codecs along with up to 12 channels of audio in 24-bit 96k loads for storage it takes a standard 2.5 inch solid-state drive however Atomos and Angel Bird have teamed up to create the smaller atom X mini SSDs which means that the drive sit nice and flush with an inch of V and for power it takes a single MPF battery and comes with a DC adapter straight out of the box by then I've got it hooked up with my sony a7s mark 2 i popped on a larger Sony NPF battery on the front there so you can see the sort of proportion how that looks and I've also got a 500 gig SSD drive which should last me for this filming location the first thing I want to point out to you guys though is just look at the size proportion compared to the sony a7s mark 2 it doesn't look weird it looks in proportion I always thought when I was shooting with the Shogun inferno the larger external record is that Optimus do with cameras like this as soon as you put it on the top there it looks ridiculously out proportion it's very heavy we've got the two batteries on the back there I always feel like I'm stressing out that hotshoe where this this looks very streamlined I don't feel like I'm stressing out that mount at all even with that larger battery on there which is great so anyway let's turn it round and let's jump into that menu system now if you've already seen some of the other videos online showing the interface this one may look slightly different and that's because this ninja V is running the latest firmware version and you'll notice that it adopts a unless in your face design with much more muted buttons I suppose it's also you can just concentrate on your image so this is the default view when you turn it on if we click at the top bar and navigate it will pop up with all the let's say top-level menu options we first got the input settings and you can see that the ninja has detected the resolution and the framerate and also the camera of picture profile that music of course you can change this manually to you've got control over what you'd like to output via the HDMI out and you've also got the different recording formats you've got different flavors of pro res and D nxh our next we've got file naming conventions audio input meters and levels headphone monitoring levels Media information timecode to current date time and finally battery and firmware information at the bottom left at the screen we've got the classic at the most mode control the buttons so let's first run through monitoring and how that works if I hit the monitor button it toggles the display of all of the menu control tools on or off now on the bottom right hand side you can see that we've got all of our professional monitoring tools and each button will toggle that tool on or off so we've got waveform RGB parade or two vector scopes peeking [Music] zebras false-color grayscale a pixel-by-pixel mode so we're shooting in 4k and this is a 1080p screen so you've got a window that's around four times smaller and we can move that around and we've also got a standard two x punch in as well there are frame guides as well as aspect ratio markers [Music] and finally we've got anamorphic d squeeze too [Music] so we tap on the bottom right button which has this sort of slider icon we can then control the settings and parameters for each of these tools so if we bring the waveform on you can now see the different controls we have for that tool and also the different positions where this can be displayed up on the screen you can pick your color for focus peaking and you can also set the sensitivity for it as well as that for the Zebras to the ninja V has eight banks where you can upload whatever look you'd like to use providing is the standard cube file and you can easily switch between displaying the native signal rec.709 hybrid log gamma P Q or the lot and finally there's some controls to tweak the monitor itself okay so let's record a few seconds of footage and then we'll switch over into the playback mode so the ninja V will turn off and then reboot into that playback mode much like the shell grunts do and automatically he'll play about the last shot that you captured and you've still got all of those monitoring features same as we did when recording and you've also got the addition of being able to control the playback speed if we hit the blue edit button it changes over the tools to the metadata tools you basically got the ability to add metadata to each the shots and there are a variety of tags that you can associate with that shot in this menu this is something to potentially save you time when you get into the Edit one thing that you might notice that is missing from the ninja V's toolset is the awesome HDR button on the earlier firmware versions we saw that there was an Adam HDR button on there but this has now been removed on the latest version the reason for that I'm not hundred percent sure why but it's definitely something that's worth flagging so guys I hope you've enjoyed that Whistlestop tour of the ninja V I've only had it for today and already I want one in my kit bag as soon as I can get my hands and want to keep you know it's gonna be very popular with filmmakers who shoot on these sort of cameras given its size its way all the features that you get in there and at this all price point very very hard to argue with I'd be pretty worried if I was one of atomizes competitors right now of course it's gonna speak to these sort of filmmakers the most but that's not to say that you can't use it on any larger video cameras yeah for sevens and whatnot the only limitation at the moment is that we have HDMI in and out nothing more but at the most have already shown that they are continually developing and pushing this thing IVC this year they announced the first two expansion modules let's sit on the back of the thing one is a MDI module that makes it integrate into an IP workflow the other one was a wireless timecode sync what I'm hoping for in the near future is one that adds an SDI input and out preferably but input at least that'd be great because what that means is we've now got the potential of being able to put a raw signal into this thing and recorded something like pro res raw or cinema D&G raw which is gonna appeal much more to those who shoot on larger video cameras that just then terms this thing into an absolute powerhouse for hips Hill recorder to be honest that especially at that price point anyway guys hope you've enjoyed this video please if you got any questions pop them in the comments and if you haven't done so already please do hit that subscribe button to stay up to date with all of our future content thanks for watching
