Hi Carl here from ProAV TV and today we're taking a look at the very exciting new Atmos ninja five so this is a monitor recorder much like their Shogun inferno and then enjoy flame monitors like that but whereas those are seven-inch this is now a 5-inch model that can do 4k timber which is just fantastic I've been waiting for Atmos to release a small 5 inch streamlined version of those larger 7h monitors for such a long time thus eminent ones are absolutely fantastic pieces of kit but sometimes they're a bit overkill sometimes what you need is a small little streamlined five-inch solution whether you're using it's just a simple monitor or whether you're using a zoom recorder as well particularly with small little cameras like the gh 5s we've got here or the yours off and Canon cameras like that a small little 5 inch package on the top it's just going to be so much more streamlined and nicer to use so I've been so excited about the release of this product it's great to finally get it in my hands and actually feel have a feel for what it's like to use so let's go through each of the new things about this monitor so obviously the screen is going to be one of the most important new aspects here it's a 5-inch 1920 by 1200 pixels display and the interesting part is that it's a thousand NIT brightness which is really quite remarkable you're going to be very hard pressed to find a 5 inch monitor with that resolution and that amount of brightness for this price point it's really quite remarkable even if you forget all about the whole recording side of this device just as a monitor I think this is going to be very appealing for a lot of people obviously you can use it these smaller cameras like this and then it's a very nice convenient lightweight 5 inch monitor and displaying platform you almost forget about the on camera ones and just use this with these smaller cameras or with a bigger camera and a bigger rig the nice thing about having a small five-inch one is that you're going to be able to run it off date apps from the bigger batteries and it's so lightweight your really gonna notice it's there so for backup recordings and for your focus puller and stuff like that this is going to be really really handy now obviously this is all driven by at Moss's user interface which has always been fantastic but with the ninja 5 they've completely overhauled it they've completely gone back to the basics and redesigned where each thing is and how it looks and how it feels to use and it's really really helped speed up how quick this device is to use when you're out and about filming just having quick access to everything down the bottom and a streamlined menu interface really does make a lot of difference I'm going to do a video just by itself running through all the ins and outs of the new design to make sure to keep an eye out for that so this is a HDMI only device you get one HDMI port in and one HDMI port out for loop through it's all run off of Sony NPF batteries you get one battery slot here on the back and it includes a lovely little dummy adapter so that you can run this off of mains straight out of box or what's interesting about it is that it's got a locking port on it so if you're using it with it's a ad tech cable or something like that which you'd have to get up ship there's an optional accessory it's gonna be really nice and secure and he's gonna lock into place it is a shame to miss out on the two battery slots that you get on at most is larger units of course that's one of the trade-offs of having a smaller five inch unit the drives are just regular SSD drives you can use normal SSD drives and put them in the side but what we've got here is one of the new Atom X and mini SSD drives so at masa partnered with a couple of other companies like Sony and angel bird companies like that in order to develop this new lineup of atom x qualified drives and what these Isis effectively takes all of the technology in a normal SSD and then shrinks it right down into this smaller form factor so this red bit here is the actual SSD drive this one is red because it's pre-production the actual ones that ship are not going to be red they'll be gray or black so that's why this one is red and then this here on the side is an optional extra this is a handle now if you don't have that much personal handle is going to sit nice and flush and be really compact here with the unit but the nice thing about the handle is that one it gives you something to grab onto to make it really easy to slot in and out to it gives you some extra HDMI protection so if I knock the back of the unit when I'm shooting you're not going to damage your HDMI port or your monitor and the other thing is that of course because these are based on normal SSD technology there's nothing to stop you using these smaller drives in your larger units in your Shogun inferno in your sumo something like that and so the handle brings it out to the size of a normal SSD drive which means that those smaller ones don't get lost inside your larger units so that's a really nice touch perhaps the most interesting poor and exciting one is this little expansion port here hidden within the battery plate on the back of the ninja five now this is something new from a Tomas and is effectively a simple data expansion port what this is going to let you do is attach one of the modules that I'm also going to be releasing on to the back to expand the capability of your monitor we've seen the first two of these released at IBC this year there was a sync module and an Ethernet slash in the eye module the sync one is going to let you timecode sync several units together and also work with things like your phone for control over the atmosphere by bluetooth but also timecode sync if you're using it as a wireless sound recorder something like that it's gonna mean that multicam setups with Atmos are very very possible for all sorts of users which is quite exciting and then the NDI slash Ethernet one is going to be great for streaming anything IP or anything using the NDI protocol so the TriCaster x' from new tech things like that that's going to be a great little module but although those two modules are great what's really exciting here is the potential for the future Atmos have been very vocal on getting manufacturers of cameras to and us all putting pressure on them to expand what their cameras can do from an out point point of view things like 10 bit things like 4k 60p things like debt law data outputs anything that might happen there from a technology point of view at most are going to be able to cope with it and make sure that these are future proof because of this expansion port all they need to do is release a new module and they're going to be able to keep up with whatever the industry does from a technology point of view which is really really exciting this expansion port has got so much potential I mean you can talk about raw inputs you can talk about giving it SDI port capability you can talk about expanding battery power there's so many potential ideas here for Atmos to release and let me know in the comments section down below got anything in particular you'd like them to do with that port because this the possibilities are just absolutely endless that is something I really was not expecting to see with the launch of the ninja five it really caught me off guard when they released that NAB with that port it's very very exciting and he's really going to future-proof the ninja five so let's look at what it can actually do as a recorder afterall Atomos are a monitor recorder company this can do ProRes of all the flavors and deer next HR from average and it is limited of course via the HDMI protocol but in that's why it can't do things like war yet but in those codecs you're going to be able to get 4k DCI 4k up to 60 frames a second in 10 bit which is fantastic especially when you're pairing it with something like this judge 5 here that can do all those in output all of those and as we're seeing more and more cameras that are capable of doing that this is definitely going to be used a lot to record 60 frames a second 4k in timber which is just fantastic in 1080p you can do up to 120 frames a second at the moment there's no products really that can actually output 120 frames a second it over HDMI in 1080p but when they do arrive if they do arrive the ninja 5 is going to be capable of recording that which is fantastic and it's also fully capable from a processor point of view of doing a whole load more than that we have seen lots with this release just how open Atomos are to potential future development in the industry and so once we're able of getting a low input somehow into this device we're going to be able to see things like pro res raw cinema DNG maybe other codecs like 8.26 5ih produces for really anything that you might ask for could potentially be integrated into a device like this so again I keep saying this but this is the advice there is a lot of potential for future development but right now I think the main thing people are going to be using this for is recording fantastic quality Pro res files in 4k 10 bits 60 frames a second which is going to be great but that is only one use case for recording these a lot of people also use these which i think is forgotten about a lot of the time as proxy machines so on maybe a bigger rig where you're recording internally onto your camera you might have one of these as a small little playback and proxy recording device hidden on camera you could even double it up as the focus pullers monitor because it's such a good quality display and then the director can take it away at the end of the shoot sitting the pub after the shoot and just go through the rushes into simple prayers proxy quality on a tiny little five inch portable device like this which is really quite nice and very useful so we've gone through some of the interesting new features with the ninja 5 but perhaps what I was most pleased by now that I physically got this in my hands and I'm using it for the first time is the build quality it really does feel very rugged a lot of this is down to the aluminium body around here on the front it's still a plastic polycarbonate on the back but the main construction of the unit feels very very solid and robust this is definitely a product that he's gonna hold up to the rough sand rigors of a professional set and it's got some really nice touches to it they've clearly put a lot of thought into the design and the build quality in particular of this unit one touch I really really like is the screw threads on the top and bottom they are the larger 3/8 inch size but with 1/4 inch screws adapter already in the unit so out the box you're going to be able to put the smaller screws in then all you got to do is unscrew that little adapter and you'll be able to put the biggest 3/8 screws in as well plus days are you okay to pins on either side so for a proper mounting solution like something from small a or shape or by tangerine what any one of those rig manufacturers you're going to get a very very secure and robust connection between the monitor and your camera or whatever you're mounting it on to combine that with the extra build quality and this entire thing is going to feel very robust and durable which is always nice to have especially because they've seemed to be able to do all of this without adding too much weight to the unit very very nice indeed now I really want to know what you guys think of the Ninja 5 so let me know in the comment section down below what modules you'd like to see added on the back for example or if you could add one coder into the unit what would you like to see a Tomas adds if you want to buy one of these of course the links down below in the description they're going to be shipping very very soon thank you so much for watching and I'll see you in the next one you
