Good afternoon, today I want to interpret a piece for you that you have asked me countless times since I opened this channel that is Asturias (Legend) by Isaac Albéniz. And I want to touch it to you in gratitude to the fact that we are already 500,000 !!! half a million subscribers !! And to thank you, I want to play you this beautiful piece that was actually written for piano, but curiously, Albéniz, as in many of his works, has in his gestures, in his way of playing music, an inspiration from the guitar. It seems that many of his works were written entirely for a guitar. The thing is, he was a pianist. Albéniz published it as a Prelude to a 3-movement series called Cantos de España. But years later it was included as the Vº movement of the Spanish Suite op. 47 The piece begins with a theme that varies throughout the entire work and alternates this melody with a pedal note; that is, a note that remains, in this case repeated, dominant: that would be the pedal note, the one that repeats itself all the time And continues to vary until the end, when we reach a slower part, loaded with motifs that recall Arabic-style, with those mordant and glissandos ornaments. Then he plays melodies on the bass that are reminiscent of those flamenco thumb techniques, he repeats the beginning, already chained with a final Coda and culminates it with a powerful note of my octave. The piece combines the Phrygian mode and the minor mode, it is constantly fluctuating in that mode that reminds of the old, Andalusian folklore and Flamenco, so many wonder: why would Asturias title it? There are several options. That he had traveled to Asturias and that he had listened to melodies there that reminded him and that there were guitarists playing Flamenco, Another option would be that as Albéniz was composing pieces with names of Spanish cities, as Seville, Cádiz, Granada, Córdoba already had ... Well, I would say: we call it Asturias. And another option is that during this time Nationalism was being promoted a lot, and Flamenco was exported as the main feature of Spain. Why? Because it was one of the most striking, special, unique and distinctive music; that is, if you listen to it, you quickly identify it. So, Flamenco, even though it was born in the South of Spain, in Andalusia and in some neighboring areas such as Extremadura, but it was exported internationally as a Spanish trait from all over Spain. It is also true that Flamenco drank from other Spanish folklores such as La Jota and perhaps Albéniz knew this influence and that is why he titled this piece Asturias (Legend). We will never know for sure but we do know that it is one of the most beautiful works that have been composed in the History of Music. If you want to learn how to play it, you can find scores and tablatures on my website, paolahermosin.com, I leave you the links in the description of this video And it is a revised edition and typed by me.
