welcome each and every one of you welcome to those of you who are joining us online a special welcome to anybody who's here for the first time or watching for the first time or you're back for the first time in a long time it's uh it's so great to see actually such a full church here i can't see what's behind the lens but i'm sure lots of people are watching as well so thank you but uh it's this is it's not a sunday but it feels probably much bigger than than than any sunday mass we've had in quite some time so thank you for making the effort to come to begin this the season of lent this is ash wednesday and it is a season of preparation as we were just singing this preparation for jesus this whole season is about jesus start to finish but we're trying to get ourselves our minds our hearts into the space to prepare ourselves for his coming and well part of that whole preparation begins with the distribution of ashes which we'll do after the homily a little bit later during mass today and so uh on this date we actually omit the the normal penitential right because because we'll be distributing ashes shortly we also will not be singing the gloria and we won't be singing the gloria throughout all of the season of lent or i'm not gonna even say it but the a word if you know what i'm talking about don't say it uh we're gonna keep that one in the in the cupboard until uh the season of easter and so brothers and sisters we continue our mass with uh actually we can do prayer partners as well i forgot about that let's take a moment and if you're watching online you can type your name into the chat and look for a name to scroll by and pray for one specifically if you're here in the church turn to somebody near you and just connect either with a wave or a nod and somebody who you can pray for they can pray for you go ahead and find a prayer partner good well i think it's so important that we are actually networked together as a community in prayer as we begin this season let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting in this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit and god for ever and ever [Music] please be seated for our readings a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering to be presented to the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the agent gather the children even infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nations why should it be said among the peoples where is their god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] have mercy o lord for we have sinned have [Music] mercy o lord for we have sinned [Music] have mercy on me o god according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins [Music] have mercy o lord for we have sinned [Music] for i know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me against you you alone have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight have mercy o glory for we have since [Music] creating me a clean heart oh god and put a new and right spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence and do not take your holy spirit from me have mercy o lord for we [Music] restore me to the joy of your salvation and sustain in me a willing spirit [Music] o lord open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise [Music] i [Music] for we have seen [Music] a reading from the second letter of paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his appeal through us we entreat you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake god made christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in christ we might become the righteousness of god as we work together with him we urge you also not to accept the grace of god in vain for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on a day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time see now is the day of salvation the word of the lord praise to you lord praise to you lord king of praise to you lord praise to you lord think of in this glory [Music] today do not harden your hearts but listen to the voice of the lord praise to you lord praise to you lord [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to the disciples beware of practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give alms do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms may be done in secrets and your father who seized in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that your fast fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret in your father who sees in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord so a couple days ago monday typically monday is my day off and father alex and i we both play soccer on mondays on our day off and just kind of rec league soccer it's it's not that big a deal you know i usually score several goals but so does he so anyways sometimes we're even on the same team but uh this past monday we were playing soccer and right after soccer father alex turns to me and he was driving so he's kind of in control of the situation anyways and he says uh yeah so i have these two vouchers for big macs he basically forced me to go to mcdonald's now i didn't want to go but i went and and he convinced me with the argumentation he said listen if we don't use these these expire today it'd be like wasting food and so i thought you know what you're right i don't like wasting food and so we went and we had uh you know we ordered the big macs and any well you can't just have a big mac right and so i realized it's kind of it's money it's basically the eve of mardi gras which is you know french for fat tuesday and so i was like let's go for it you know we'll start the celebrations early so you got to get fries right to go with the the big mac and then father alex had the brilliant idea well you know what just came on the menu the shamrock shake you got to wash it down with a nice cool beverage right and so so there we were you know the two of us enjoying some time of brotherhood and and i was forcing my way through this this meal in in preparation for mardi gras and uh and it was wonderful you know it just went down smoothly everything the big mac the fries and especially that minty cool beverage until about three hours later when i think i discovered that i might be lactose intolerant and you're laughing but i wasn't and uh it was quite an experience so that's going to be the very last time maybe the first and last time that i have the shamrock shake uh i i uh i'm not sure if i can recommend it or not but anyways that was my way of preparing for the preparation of the season of lent which is uh preparing for of course the season of easter and uh when i think about this season of course we we know of the the three things we're called to we hear about it in our gospel today to prayer to almsgiving and to fasting or i think the order is almsgiving prayer and fasting and jesus when he's talking about these almsgiving by the way i think you know it's giving over and above your normal contribution that you would make to the parish or whatever it's giving to the poor to those specifically in need prayer taking dedicated time to be with god to to talk to him to listen to him and fasting to deny ourselves uh traditionally uh of food deny ourselves of different kinds of food or specialty kind of foods that we like you know uh and and you know lent is famous for what are you going to give up for lent right i'm going to give up those mcdonald's uh what do you call them shamrock shakes i'm giving them up for lent and for life but i just kind of you know when we when we think about those three things jesus his words are so interesting he's not saying you know lent is a time where you should start to think about doing these things you know from time to time if you want sort of as a nice little ritual what does he say he actually he's very presumptuous he says when you give alms whenever you give alms so he's presuming it's already happening regularly not just during the season of lance or when whenever you pray so it's presuming he's presuming that we're praying and and we should be and whenever you fast when you fast he's presuming that even outside of lent that we're disciplining ourselves we're denying ourselves of of different things that's uh that we we might like in and as a way to discipline to strengthen our will so that we can say no to the bigger things the the sins the temptations that come our way and so jesus is very presumptuous in in this and that he's saying i'm expecting you guys to be doing these things already regularly and yet if you're anything like me i hope you're not but if you're like me uh i'm forgetful and i get lazy and i'm weak and i need this season for a kind of spiritual boot camp to to get back into spiritual shape to say yeah you know what i probably should have been doing these things all along but i'm going to start now i'm going to resume now almsgiving prayer fasting i'm going to get serious about these because jesus is calling us to them and they're part of this time of preparation to really put ourselves in a place to get ready for god now it just so happens that when i think of uh this this time as well i think it's just on our minds on our hearts all that's going on over in europe in the ukraine and and russia and i just i'm i don't even know what to say i don't have words i'm not an expert in geopolitics i'm just deeply concerned i'm i've been praying for it i've been offering masses for the whole situation i'm going to offer mass today for peace in the world uh and i was on a webinar yesterday that divine renovation put out in uh father james bishop baron nikki gumbel we're all speaking and nikki in particular he didn't miss his words he just simply said evil is evil and there's something evil about this and we we cannot just stand by passively and frankly i don't know what to do but i know that pope francis he has called us to respond in at least it just so happens again two of these three things that are so fitting to the season of lent to prayer and to fasting he's calling us he called the whole church around the world to join him in prayer and fasting for an end to the war for for peace in the ukraine and and with russia and i'm just struck by that because you know jesus says you know there's that story in the gospels of the disciples are there they're face to face with evil right they encounter this person who is afflicted by an evil spirit who needs deliverance and the apostles are there and they're praying and and they're trying whatever they can and nothing happens and finally they're exasperated and jesus comes by you know they're the pupils there they're they're not making much progress and jesus comes by and he's able to cast out that evil that evil spirit and they're like how did you do it master and he said some require prayer and fasting both that combination of the two is powerful and i think especially in our world today this idea of fasting is something that it's not really invoked you know like like it's not something popular in fact there's been many movements even in in catholic circles lent comes around and it's almost like an anti give up chocolate for lent movement have you heard about those people it's like i'm i'm going to eat more chocolate this lent you know i'm not going to be one of those people who just gives up chocolate for lent and it's like okay fine but traditionally whether it's chocolate or whatever but to deny ourselves of food is a biblical form of fasting and it works according to jesus it really works when in combination with prayer no uh you know what is the thing about fasting is it just that jesus is he's really he gets a kick out of us all having low blood sugar right that's why he's calling us to this and by the way i'm not very good at fasting uh it's one of those things that i'm like oh yeah it's lent i should start fasting again that's uh yeah gotta get on that jesus like yeah father simon whenever you fast you know when you fast just go like oh yes right we're gonna get to that fasting we don't do it because we like it obviously it's it's an active discipline an act of self-denial and what it usually produces and by the way when the church talks about fasting she's saying like you know instead of eating three square meals eat two it's not like uh nobody's gonna die at least maybe if you're if you have health conditions obviously there's you you need to adapt accordingly but uh but for most of us to deny ourselves a little bit puts us in that place of hungering realizing you know what i'm i'm so weak and very often i try to fast i make it to like 10 30 and i'm like i'm gonna die and so i run to the fridge and consume as much as many carbs as fast as possible you know so i don't i don't die a martyr's death uh not that that would count but it's like it puts us in a place of weakness i can't even do this i am so desperate for god that's a really good place to be if we get nothing else out of this season of lent then get to a place where we realize i need god i actually can't do any of this i can't make it through 40 days for sure i can't make that spiritual marathon i can't do this without jesus i need him desperately if fasting and prayer together can bring us to that place where we realize our desperate need for god then it will have been worth it now one thing that's also struck me about our readings today is that it's it's not just uh a singular thing it's not just a solo thing between god and me i gotta pray i gotta fast and and we're gonna we're gonna be okay no it's actually a communal thing if you look at this psalm it's so so interesting this is psalm 51 this is the famous psalm david wrote after after he had sinned he committed adultery and murder to cover up his sin of adultery uh he writes this psalm have mercy on me o god according to your steadfast love he's crying out for mercy for him if you if you caught that when phil was singing the refrain have mercy o lord for we we have sinned plural so it's not just we're not just kind of reminiscing on david's old sin we're actually realizing no every single one of us is part of this there's a communal dimension not to not see in any way remove that that personal ownership we have to take for our own sin but there's a communal dimension to sin in the same way that we're part of a community we're actually we're part of a global community we're interwoven with every single other person who is a child of god and so yeah there's sin there's evil in the world there's evil right now being perpetrated over in europe and it's like have mercy oh lord for we have sinned you see in our first reading even in this book of joel there's this call for repentance for prayer for fasting and it's for the for everybody communally to everybody to join in this act of prayer fasting repentance turning back to god it's not just for one person and i was doing very cursory research on the book of joel and from what i could find they hadn't even done anything wrong there's other stories like the book of jonah for example you might remember the people in nineveh they were they were sinners so yeah of course the whole town they needed to repent turn back to god but in the book of joel we're not even sure did they do anything wrong and yet they are together being called as a community to repent to turn back to god for we have sinned for we have sinned and i think that the call is for us then to join in that to take today for sure as a day for prayer and fasting to unite to what the holy father what pope francis has asked us to to join in this prayer for peace in the world but this whole season in different ways to join in in continuing to pray continuing to deny ourselves of good things so that we can realize god we need you we really need you and this act that we're about to join in communally in just a moment with the distribution of ashes again it's communal all of us in fact everybody who's here can receive ashes old people young people you don't have to have received your first holy communion you don't even have to be catholic if you're here you can join with us in repenting and praying to god in in putting ourselves in a place of saying yeah god we need you and so i just want to conclude with this prayer that pope francis wrote and it's a few paragraphs here i'd like us to all close our eyes and i'll read it slowly and let's realize that yeah we are united with all of our brothers and sisters and especially lifting up all of those in the ukraine in russia praying for that whole situation and for peace lord god of peace hear our prayer we have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms how many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced how much blood has been shed how many lives have been shattered how many hopes have been buried but our efforts have been in vain now lord come to our aid grant us peace teach us peace guide our steps in the way of peace open our eyes and our hearts and give us the courage to say never again war with war everything is lost instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace lord god of abraham god of the prophets god of love you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace our trepidation into confident trust and are quarreling into forgiveness keep alive within us the flame of hope so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation in this way may peace triumph at last and may the words division hatred and war be banished from the heart of every man and woman renew our hearts and minds so that the word which always brings us together will be brother and our way of life will always be that of shalom peace salam amen our lady queen of peace pray for us wow hello so we're going to move into this time of the distribution of ashes dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord those who are helping with the distribution of ashes if you come forward we have uh four people who just ask you to remain where you are in the pews it will take a few minutes obviously to go through you'll hear them say either the words repent and believe in the gospel or remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return so you can stay in the pews as as if we as we do communion and we'll come by to you to distribute ashes [Music] do [Music] of the new beginnings god of the second chance your grace and endless river your love and avalanche there in my darkest moment oh burned to god tells us that at an acceptable time he listens to us and helps us st paul assures us that now is the acceptable time in confidence then we come to god asking him to hear and answer our prayers for pope francis and all church leaders that they may be true ambassadors for christ calling everyone to be reconciled to god and reminding everyone of god's mercy we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the poor of the world and for all those who are in need we remember especially all who are suffering because of covid and all who are suffering because of war and violence that help will come quickly we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for this parish as we heed the lenten call to prayer fasting and almsgiving that we may grow in our relationship with the lord jesus and our desire to live as his disciples we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those preparing for easter sacraments that through the lenten season their hearts and lives will be converted more and more to christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick that they will confidently call upon god's mercy we pray to the lord the lord hear our prayer for the faithful departed that they will be welcomed into the full blessedness of those who have known loved and served god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer to take a moment now and pray for our prayer partners either online or here in person let's pray for that individual god of mercy which we turn to you in this time of repentance and renewal asking you to hear the prayers we have voiced and those in our hearts look kindly on us for we make all of our prayers through christ our lord [Music] spirit of the rushing wind the fire of god fall holy ghost breathe on us we pray as we repent and turn from sin revival [Music] the fragrance hear the wind [Music] [Applause] [Music] eyes the power of your presence pour your spirit out pour your spirit out [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven in the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim [Music] the holy holy lord god [Music] heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the [Music] lord hosanna [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirits upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from us for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death [Music] lord until you come again oh lord until you come again o lord [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and brian our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] me [Applause] [Music] is [Music] the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] lamb of god you take away the sins of the world [Music] the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed for the distribution of communion those who are joining us online perhaps you're not able to return in person and so uh at this time there's an opportunity for you to make an act of spiritual communion to ask jesus to come to you to meet you in this moment as we begin the season of lens and for everybody else here in our church uh i'd ask you just to remain where you are as we did with the distribution of of ashes we'll come to you please extend your hands to receive communion and then you can sit or kneel to pray so we can see who is left to receive okay [Music] all these pieces broken and scattered and mercy gathered mended and all empty handed [Music]
