like so uh good morning everyone and welcome today we begin our lenten season celebrating ash wednesday our entrance song is number 268 beyond the days number 268 let us all please stand and sing as we begin [Music] beyond the days of hope and mercy we see a light of faith renewed and in our longing we thirst for guidance to walk with you day by day fortnite days and nights you guide the steps of our journey may your presence be felt in the whisper of your voice beyond the days of hope and mystery we see a light of faith renewed and in our longing we thirst for guidance to walk with you day by day you are merciful o lord and despise nothing that you have made you overlook people's sense to bring them to repentance and you spare them for you are the lord our god in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit my brothers and sisters prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries let us recall to mind our sins and pray for forgiveness lord jesus who came to gather the nations into the peace of god kingdom lord have mercy you come in christ have mercy you will come again in glory with salvation for your people lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take our battle against spiritual believers we may be armed with weapons of self restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] be merciful oh lord for we have seen be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart create for me o god and a steadfast spirit renew within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me oh lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise be merciful [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the god the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] if today you hear his voice harden not your hearts praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give arms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received a reward but when you give arms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms giving may be a secret and your father who ceased in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and those three corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you pray go to your own inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you and when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting they may not say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ today as you know is wednesday ash wednesday the beginning of lent the holy season of land the word lent is derived from an old english world which means in a way spring so land and spring have a large and common we notice in springtime everything comes back to life they have been dead during the winter season and then new branches new flowers no birds no other creatures up here it is a joyful season after winter lent takes us with jesus christ in preparing himself for the passion that is to come and the church teaches us how to do this by prayer fasting and love of charity we christians are to follow christ christ went in the desert before he started his public mission great people the same saint paul after his conversion he didn't go right into the ministry but he went into the desert to reflect to change his life totally land gives us this opportunity to change our lives no one can say it cannot happen god is calling us to come to him remember always we have a merciful a forgiving god and god will forget the past if we only come to him [Music] with a sincere heart we can see this that happened in saint augustine who did everything under the sun before his conversion saint paul who was looking for christians to destroy them he was in a real world a terrorist before his conversion saint peter who denied jesus three times mary my dad and many many many others but they all came back to god and god is ready with open arms to accept us if we only are sincere about our actions [Music] in the gospel of matthew jesus directs us as he did his disciples to pray to give arms and to do panels our good works are expressions of god's will and it is his approval we seek and need it's a season of repentance now season open your life a season for even the greatest sinner in the world ready to accept it we know that god gave us his only son jesus christ no religion can claim that except christianity almighty god gave his only son so that we may be all saved and come to the kingdom of god to come home when someone is away from god he is not home he is a homeless person god is calling us to come back to him during this holy season come home where you belong where god can protect you when god can give you mercy and forgive your sins and help you once again to be a person fully alive now what we're going to do today like last year because of the pandemic as you know um we have the blessing of the ashes and then you come as in communion time two lines here in the middle and go back into your place to decide i the imposition of ashes you know used to be on the forehead but because again of the virus it just a little spread on the head that's the way the pope receives it really never got it on the forehead it's only on the head and for that you must see it on tv he goes to the dominican hubs santa sabina in rome has been a tradition for centuries he goes there for the celebration of ashwansa and then back to saint peter's and so we have the blessing of the ashes right now and immediately we have the imposition of ashes uh i need a eucharistic minister if it's possible so i have two people here joe okay um and the the the words are said at the beginning and then all we have to do is just put the ashes on the forehead okay joe you're gonna come let us humbly ask god our father to be pleased to bless with abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads impenetrance o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness the works of penance lend you a merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observance they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the past and mystery of your son in the name of jesus christ our lord amen so please form two lines now as in communion [Music] [Music] with these ashes we know your love o lord with these ashes we turn our hearts to you [Music] daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes we know your love o lord [Music] joining together on this journey with you we walk these forty days and nights by our grace we answer in faith oh lord lead us to your light [Music] with these ashes we know your love o lord with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as
