gather on this sad day to wish our brother and father gabriel ignatius maguire with little farewell today i'd like this to say a special word of welcome to his brothers and sisters and their families who are here we're delighted here and we're all the clergy who are here i'm delighted to see so many of them here today from the diocese from i'd like to welcome a special edition ralph who is the bishop of hallam he's also the dangerous and was in this community for some years many many years ago and i'd also like to say a welcome to bishop david and we're delighted that you're here with us and to support us today i would like to say a wonderful welcome to the little sisters and the staff that you're here there's so many people to say welcome to today and it's i'm just delighted that you're all here and to see as well those who are gonna be following this mass on the internet especially following um from our communities our redemptive communities up and down the country but especially those of you who are watching us and following the mass from zimbabwe we're all here for different reasons because when there's a brother priest he was a brother the dentist he was your own brother he was your parish priest he was your patient whoever we're all here for different reasons but we're all together united to be together today so let's bring our our sense of gratitude for father gabriel for all he did for us let's bring our gratitude to the lord today let's say thank you for his life let's rejoice in his life today even though it's ended but let's addre so in that spirit of gratitude let's take a moment to pause and say sorry for our own consequences to give worship to god my brothers and my sisters and in my words in what i have done and what i have to do through my fault through my fault through man who was grievous fault therefore i ask for a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] here [Music] is [Music] hear his let us pray grant we pray oh lord that the soul of father gabriel ignatius maguire your servant and priest whom you honored with sacred office while he lived in this world may exalt forever in the glorious home of heaven through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever christmas is [Music] [Music] short a while he has achieved a long life his soul being pleasing to the lord he has taken him quickly from the wickedness around him yet people look on uncomprehending it does not enter their heads that grace and mercy await the chosen of the lord and protect his holy ones the word of the lord uh [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] oh [Music] a reading from the second book of timothy as for me i am already being poured out as a libation and the time of my departure has come i have fought the good fight i have finished the race i have kept the faith from now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge will give me on that day and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing the word of the lord oh [Music] so [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john um jesus said to the crowd all that the father gives me will come to me and whoever comes to me i shall not turn him away because i have come from heaven not to do my own will but to do the will of the one who sent me now the will of him who sent me is that i should lose nothing of all that he has given to me and that i should raise it up on the last day yes it is my father's will that whoever sees the son and believes in him shall have eternal life and that i shall raise him up on the last day the gospel of the lord [Music] in his brave attempt to welcome everybody the celebrant forgot to say something about himself so just in case he's not known to some of you it's father richard reed and he's the provincial superior of the london province and leading us our celebration of father gabby today i'm delighted to have the opportunity to share a few a few words today but i'm conscious also that if if i don't get it right i'll know all about it as you might imagine the readings today are full of hope and promise as they look to a future life the purpose of the writer of the book of wisdom is to address some of the difficult issues of the day and offer his readers hope in particular he struggles with the question how is it that the wicked seem to prosper and the just suffer his conclusion is that although the just seem to have died they have they are really alive with god they have pleased god so god has loved them they have been taken up and grace and mercy await the chosen of the lord jesus also offers his listeners hopeful hope-filled words he promises that he'll never drive away those given to him by the father because he only does the father's will and he mentions two things as the father's will firstly that i should not lose anything of what the father gave me and second that it should that i should raise it up on the last day jesus reveals to us the father's love and his own wish to draw us to share in his relationship with the father and forever it's the hope expressed in today's readings that gathers us around father gabby in prayer for the last time today they express his hope too the hope he shared with others often on an occasion such as this today we pray that it will be for gabby a hope fulfilled and a promise kept and that with saint paul he now possesses the crown of righteousness reserved for him gabby's early years were spent in the family home in swandambar county cavern along with his parents and his siblings um ann desi benedict and jared his teenage years were spent here in the juveniles it was then i think the siege of his love for the abi were so he entered the navicide in 1967 and was professed the following year he went on to hawkestown where he was ordained on the 1st of july 1973. his ordination would be the last of the ordinations to take place at hawk stone i often used to tease gabby about his ordination i was the student m.c for the celebration which in normal circumstances didn't mean very much unfortunately the bishop secretary the real emcee was unable to be present i'd only been present at one ordination prior and on the day i quickly discovered that the presiding bishop would not move unless instructed by me but i was never sure what the next move was meant to be so with lots of hesitation somehow we managed to get through but i'd often tease gabby saying that i wasn't convinced that he was actually validly ordained gabby was equally at home in a boiler suit with a toolbox at hand and a chasible and a chalice and he's left marx his mark everywhere by with his handiwork not least in bishop's house in gibraltar and in sheffield in the early days of our ministry i was the the fourth man on the school mission team with with father gabby along with john brooks who's buried here also and ian mckay as you might imagine he did things differently his quirky style appealed to the students and and he steadily built up a rapport with them throughout the week i had the privilege too of giving a number of parish missions with him during this time and again the same kind of engagement equally effective and he was always good a good companion he loved his time in zimbabwe he brought his typical energy and enthusiasm to his ministry there in the end it was his sense of justice and what is right and not being afraid to say it as it is that he was asked to leave the country with a heavy heart he returned to the province but i think there was always a little bit of him that enjoyed the kudos of being a persona non grata by the zimbabwean government as mentioned earlier from his juvenile days gabby had a genuine love and affection for the abbey parish and your presence here today is a testimony of your genuine love and affection for him as you know he proudly introduced himself wherever he went as i'm father gabby from the abbey you know how he worked tirelessly for you as your parish priest for over 18 years he was everywhere extraordinary generous with his time he would clock you all in and clock you all out at the weekend masses he was devoted to campion in the abbey school happy just to spend time with both staff and students he found the time to take young people of the parish away on trips and even found time to play cameo roles in the parish pantomime we know that he appreciated your support for him as your parish priest but i know too he would want me to acknowledge in a particular way the support he received from claire over the years and especially during these years since his cancer diagnosis when he was struck with cancer he was told that in in six months he would be back in ministry sadly although he fought the good fight it wasn't to be and with great reluctance he had to step down from being parish priest of his beloved abby we often say that when someone has a terminal illness that they never really complained well it's certainly true of gabby i never heard him complain about his lot and what had come upon him we all know what he what he was like always on the move full of energy independent it must have come hard to him but he never said unless you think i'm going to canonize him at this point he could he could find plenty of other things to complain about but never his illness in the in the end he had a perfect parting and his sister was there with him and when the moment approached she lifted his head and he slept quietly away i mentioned at the beginning that gabby made his home here with the redemptive family but his roots remained deep in irish soil so it's fitting i think that we send him on his way with the ancient traditional irish blessing gabby may the roads rise to meet you may the wind be always at your back may the sun shine on your face may the rains fall soft upon the fields may god hold you in the palm of his hand [Applause] let us for father gabby who in baptism was given the pledge of eternal life that he may now be admitted into the company of the saints lord in your mercy the family and friends of father gabby seek comfort and consolation heal their pain and dispel the darkness and doubt that come from grief lord in your mercy that the bishops and priests of the church and all who preach the gospel may be given the strength to express in action the word they proclaim lord in your mercy for all of us assembled here to worship in faith that we may be gathered together again in god's kingdom lord in your mercy we ask our lady perpetual help will pray for us now and at the hour of our death as we say hail mary full of grace the lord [Music] heavenly father we ask you to hear and answer our prayers which are made in faith and in the name of your son jesus christ who is our redeemer forever and ever [Music] ah [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] uh uh so uh mm-hmm [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] grant we pray almighty god that through these holy mysteries gabriel ignatius um maguire your servant and priest may behold with clarity forever what he faithfully ministered here through christ our lord the lord lift up your hearts [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord in him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come indeed for your faithful lord life is changed not ended and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven and so with thrones and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaimed [Music] he's you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said to the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself granted we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint gabriel saint ignatius and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and bernard our bishop the order of bishops ignatius maguire whom we have called from this world to yourself grant that he who was united with your son in a death like his may also be one with him in his resurrection when from the earth he will raise up in the flesh of those who have died and transform our lowly body after the parting of his only glorious body to our departed brothers and sisters too and all we're pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory when you wipe away every tear from our eyes for seeing you our god is you are we shall be like you for all ages and praise you without and through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the forward bishop burnley is very sorry that he can't be at the requiem mass for father gabriel to this morning but he has sent a message which he has asked me to read dear brothers and sisters in christ dear friends i'm so sorry that i can't be with you today as you gather in irving erdington abbey to celebrate the requiem mass for our dear brother priest father gabby mcguire i wish to offer my sincere condolences to father gabby's family to his brother redemptorists and to his many friends who have come together to pray for him and to commend him to our loving and merciful father i recall with gratitude father gabby's devoted service of all his parishioners over many years and in particular his care for the people of erdington abbey where he was parish priest and for the clergy and people of the birmingham north deanery during his time as dean it was a great blessing to us that father gabby was resident at st joseph's home in harborne in recent years and i wish to thank mother kathleen mary and the little sisters of the poor together with their staff for the wonderful care that father gabby received i'm grateful to bishop david evans for representing me at today's requiem mass and to all father gabriel's brother priests who are come celebrating today i unite myself in prayer with you at this time as i also offer mass for the repose of the soul of father gabby and in gratitude for his long and dedicated priestly ministry in the archdiocese with the assurance of my prayers and every kind wish yours devotedly in christ bernard longley archbishop of birmingham thank you very much thank you for planting the seeds of faith that will last a lifetime to call the children [Applause] i don't think you can say better than that can you he's planting the seeds in all of our lives with the children especially so it's wonderful the redemption is going to sing now an anthem which we sing traditionally in honour of our lady it's an anthem that we've signed for hundreds of years and it's something we sing in recreation something we sing at our donations professions and funerals so i'd like to invite the redemptions to please stand and we'll sing thee [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] before we move to the final commendation i would just like to thank you all for being here and celebrating with such dignity and father gabriel's life so thank you very much father bishop ralph said many people mentioned in the homily night i want to back up that again but i thank you as well i want just to say a special word of thanks to father gabriel's community especially his director father ryan and also father frank dickinson because when somebody is sick within your family you know that it can take an awful lot of jobs that need doing which nobody needs to know about but i know that they've done these jobs and i just wanted to say thank you for the love and care that you showed father mcguire [Applause] [Music] would you please stand lord our god the death of our brother gabriel ignatius mcguire recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth but for those who believe in your love death is not the end nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives we share the faith of your son's disciples and the hope of the children of god bring the light of christ's resurrection to this time of testing and pain and as we pray for gabriel ignatius maguire we pray also for those who loved him through christ our lord amen we're now going to sprinkle his remains with holy water as a reminder that when he was baptized in 1948 i think that's the right date that's the time when the lord said to him you are my child and one day i will come and take you home so we'll sprinkle it with holy water and then we'll incense his mortal remains because this is the body with which he made his way through the world so we honor the body as well this thing the smoke going up is a sign also of our prayer going up to our loving father in heaven so eternal life in peace let us take gabriel to his place of christ um is oh foreign oh foreign [Applause] you ah yes [Music] uh so [Applause] uh [Music] you
