[Music] oh we rise again to create ourselves [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning everyone we have a special opportunity today to listen to deacon rich preach and so i want you guys to pay careful attention to what he says at the time of the homily i was one of his teachers when he was in the diaconate formation program and so this is actually the first time i'll ever hear him preach and so give him feedback help him to grow in preaching to students but as we gather together on this ash wednesday we are called to remember that during this time of abstinence and penance that we are to increase in our lives so during this time of abstinence we are reminded in our lenten season to increase in prayer but also to increase in our sacrifice and in acts that help us remember why christ has called us into relationship with him so let us now pause for a moment call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries lord jesus you came to reconcile us to one another and to the father lord have mercy lord have mercy lord jesus you heal the wounds of sin and division christ have mercy lord jesus you intercede for us with your father lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life and let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of joel even now says the lord return with me your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning render your hearts not of garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful he is slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim and fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bridge her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] have mercy on me oh god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me [Music] for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your [Music] a sight heart create for me oh god and a steadfast spirit renew within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me oh lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise [Music] so a reading from the second letter of paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to sin who he did not know sin so that we may become righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain where he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now in a very acceptable time behold now in the day of salvation the word of the lord [Music] is [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no re recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogue and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord so today we receive our ashes a visual symbol reminding us we're entering a special time in our faith journey today begins the season of lent a time of reflecting on our lives and i don't mean how school's going or how many friends we have or don't have len calls us to a deeper reflection and during the season we hear the words fasting and giving up for most of us these words can strike us in a very negative way the good news is that we should not focus on it in a negative way instead to look at fasting and giving something up as a way to make a positive change in our lives not to stop eating ice cream just to lose weight or look good this summer we need to look beyond that instead imagine if we could fast from putting others down or fast from judging others and instead accept people where they are in their lives it is okay if everybody doesn't make the team if we can do that that then all of a sudden fasting may not be as negative but as a way to make our world a more peaceful world a world more accepting of others or imagine not giving up something as much to give something to someone maybe a friend who has troubles at home and just needs someone to listen to them just give them the time so they can talk to you or it can be as easy as someone offering a compliment instead of finding fault all the time true it is hard with some people but it is our call to support each other in our journey here on earth as saint paul said we are ambassadors for christ lent gives us the opportunity to reflect on how well we are fulfilling that role with our friends our families and the world around us our world so desperately needs the core values we hold so dear here at notre dame today let us reflect on truly making a difference in our lives and all those around us it is up to each one of us to make a commitment to make a difference as we journey through this season of lent jesus help us to have the right motives in our lives to find ways we can give of ourselves by using our time and talent to help others that this season of lent invites each of us to do a little more for god that our school and our homes may become the places where serving others as acts of love become the foundation for faithful discipleship please stand the sign of blessed ashes invites us to respond to the god who calls us to come back to him with all our heart the penance of lent has begun our prayers enrich the charity and faith of that penance we now enter into our response is lord hear our prayer for our holy father pope francis and all the church leaders that the holy spirit will give them the grace to lead the church throughout this lenten season we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our nation's politicians that the lord will give them the wisdom to make good decisions and for peace throughout the world especially in ukraine we pray to the lord for changing laws policies and attitudes that discriminate against and marginalize unborn children we pray to the lord for our church that we may remember the great sacrifice that christ made for us and be strong enough to make sacrifices for him not only during lent but year round we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that these days of lent will be marked by sincere efforts at peacemaking throughout the world we pray to the lord r this lent we will be faithful to fasting praying and serving others we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the following students as they prepare to receive the sacrament of confirmation at our easter liturgy keira boyer ryan carr kayla sismar diego mendes and matt savage that the holy spirit may descend upon them during this time of preparation we pray to the lord for all those who are sick in our families and community especially mrs cruella and for those who have died that they will feel the loving presence of the risen jesus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the prayers and concerns that we keep in the silence of our hearts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of mercy and compassion look upon the petitions of penitent people as we pray for grace at this time let us not forget the needs of others we ask this through christ our lord [Music] here i am [Music] all together wonderful to me [Music] how oh is [Music] here i am [Music] all together wonderful to me [Music] sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be made acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice the praise and glory is holy church as we soundly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever and the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you and your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] yes [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offering and pour out on them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your beloved son jesus christ in whom we too are your sons and daughters indeed though we were once lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son who alone has just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to them saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his blood to be shed on the cross he took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving you thanks handed the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our surest peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful and merciful god this sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father on those you unite to yourself by the sacrifice of your son and grant that by the power of the holy spirit as they partake of this one bread and one chalice they may be gathered into one body in christ who heals every division be pleased to keep us always in communion of mind and heart together with francis our pope and david our bishop help us to work together for the coming of your kingdom until the hour when we stand before you saints among the saints in the halls of heaven with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints and with our deceased sisters and brothers whom we humbly commend to your mercy then freed at last from the wound of corruption and made fully into a new creation we shall sing to you with gladness the thanksgiving of christ who lives for all eternity through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] and at our savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we write the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power the glory are yours lord jesus christ who said your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins by the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever and the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other a sign of peace [Music] [Applause] god [Music] the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] [Applause] take away the sins of the world [Music] [Applause] you take away the sins of the world please behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] so [Music] bye [Music] oh [Music] say that i'm your friend [Music] to feel the warmth me bring [Music] you're me right [Music] on me [Music] me [Music] we need you [Music] we need to [Music] is [Music] nothing else no no no nothing [Music] for those joining us via the live stream we'll pray the act of spiritual communion at this time my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen and let us pray may the sacrament we have received sustain us o lord that our lenten vast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord before we bless the ashes i'm going to invite everyone to sit down i want to go over a couple of quick things so you guys are are ready and prepared for lent so during lent we are asked to increase in prayer because god reminds us to pray every day we're also asked don't go anywhere chief we're also asked to fast by giving up something um particularly on ash wednesday and good friday to fast from sunrise to sunset meaning we abstain from eating solid foods throughout the daylight hours and to break that fast at dinner time with a small meal not a giant lobster outing somewhere that is the tradition of fasting on ash wednesday and good friday and every friday for that matter through lent but we also are invited to practice abstinence which means to give something up to remind us of our need to turn to christ to overcome those temptations of the passion as well as those temptations that buff up our pride and our ego so that we might recognize in all humility that we are ash and dust and without god we amount to nothing and that we need to turn to him during this lenten season that's what light's all about so if you haven't figured out what you intend to to do this lenten season it's not just about giving something up it's about examining how you're orienting your life what your priorities are and if necessary to make changes during this time in order to get back to your relationship with christ jesus dear sisters and brothers let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitents oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord and please stand and pour out your spirit of compunction o god on those who bow before your majesty and by your mercy may they merit the rewards you promise to those who do penance through christ our lord and may almighty god bless you the father the son and of the holy spirit amen the mass has ended please be seated those who are distributing ashes please come to the stage at this time i do want to thank father jason mrs reed and mrs malley our campus ministers for today's mass and a special thank you to deakin rich for your thoughtful and
