people as well as the irarhay nakota nations bearspaw chinooky and wesley this land is also the home of the metis nation region 3 and all others who call this place home hello everyone and welcome thank you for joining us for our ash wednesday celebration um thank you for joining us whether you're joining us in the classroom or at home this marks a very special time as we're entering into our lenten journey together we have a wonderful little liturgy presented prepared for you today that you'll see some readers from madame chantal's grade 3 class as well as some of the kindergarten afternoon kindergarten students so thank you for joining us once again and please enjoy our opening hymn [Music] [Music] christ in me arise and despair all the darkness christ in me arise with your gathered in god's merciful love we acknowledge our need to return to god with whole hearts let us pray oh lord as we begin our lenten journey help us to turn away from doing wrong and to live lives of holiness through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and bounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him and grain offering and drink offering to be president to the lord your god below the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call the solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the aged gather the children even infants at the best let a let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride who cannot be between the vestible and the altar that let the priests and the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do lord jesus said to his disciples when you do good deeds don't try to show off if you do you won't get a reward from your father in heaven when you give to the poor don't try don't blow a loud horn that is what the show-offs do in the meeting places and on the street corners because they're always looking for praise i promise you that they already have their reward when you give to the poor don't let anyone know about it then the gift will be given in secret your father already knows what is done in secret and he will reward you when you pray don't be like those show-offs and who love to stand up and pray in the meeting places and on the three corners they do this just to look good i promise you that they already have their reward when you pray go into a room alone and close the door pray to your father in private he knows what is done in private and will reward you when you go without eating don't try to look gloomy as though show-offs do when they go without eating i promise you that they already have their reward instead comb your hair wash your face then others won't know what is what you were going then others won't know that you were going without eating but your father sees what is done in private and he will reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ in today's second reading saint paul draws our attention to the role of an ambassador typically an ambassador is a person who has been set sent out as an official representative of a country or state to a foreign country when they speak or act they do so on behalf of the nation or government they represent rather than on behalf of themselves their goal is to maintain positive relations and good will between countries they may also be sent to promote a specific activity or industry such as peace or trade canada has a long list of ambassadors to other countries and international organizations we have als we have canadian space ambassadors whose responsibility is to share the knowledge and passion about space st paul reminds the corinthians as well as each of us that we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his his appeal through us by virtue of our baptism we are official representatives of christ to everyone we encounter in our lives that means that when we speak or act we represent not ourselves but christ and are to speak and act with the same mind and heart of christ we are to be compassionate merciful understanding generous kind and loving that others may know and experience god's own compassion mercy understanding generosity kindness and love we know however that we often fail to think act and speak as authentic representatives of christ that our hardened hearts and sinful ways often lead us to fall short of being good disciples instead we speak and act out of our own self-interest we lose our temper and hold grudges we are disobedient and disrespectful we gossip and we do not keep confidences we are insincere in our dealings with others and do not always take responsibility for our wrongdoings we are greedy selfish and sometimes indifferent we are proud and self-righteous and so forth clearly these are not the ways of god thankfully god doesn't turn away from us in these situations instead he invites us to turn to him each time we fail he invites us to change our ways and our hearts and to turn to him with fasting weeping and mourning he reminds us that he is always ready to welcome us back for he is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love he wants us to help change our ways that we might become faithful ambassadors of christ during the lenten season each of us is called to a dedicated period of repentance and conversion through discipline such as prayer fasting and almsgiving if we have been putting it off saint paul reminds us that now is the acceptable time now is the time to strive to walk more carefully on the path of discipleship now is the time to be more faithful to prayer and to listen as god speaks to our hearts now is the time to immerse ourselves in in and pay closer attention to god's word now is the time to live with hope now is the time to make sacrifices motivated by our love for god and to strive to be more charitable in our words and our actions now is the time to say no to our selfish desires and to the things that prevent us from loving god and our neighbor as we embark on our lenten journey let us make let us make this moment the acceptable time to repent and pray for the grace to be transformed into more authentic ambassadors for christ that others may come to know and love god and that we might live for the praise and glory of his name as a symbol of our willingness to turn to god with deep trust i invite you to come forward to receive ashes in your classrooms your teachers have been provided a little container with holy ashes that they will they will circulate and provide to you what they will do is they'll provide they'll put a little sprinkle of ashes on the crown of your head if you're willing to receive and they will utter the phrase repent and believe in the gospel repent and believe in the gospel amen if you are receiving you're asked strengthened by god's grace inspired by the holy spirit and encouraged by the example of christ jesus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayers for our amendments for of our faith of our faith kim
