or what we can do rather than giving up and simply continuing with our regular actions take some time to realize that by sacrificing something we may seem as minor opens up time and effort for us to redirect some of our energy this redirection of energy is really at the heart of lent and being like christ we must reach out to those in the margins and in the season of lent especially we must take the time and effort in order to do so this can come in many different ways maybe you actually do give up sweets or something that which is absolutely fine and is great your willing to give up something at all however do not stop there think about maybe the money you would be spending on those suites and you just donate to a charity that you know of in fact one great way to get started is actually right here in our school our sister school in ghana saint brother andre senior high is running a fundraiser campaign in order to purchase some instruments with our choir in order to have the funds to do so we have set our goal at four thousand dollars however with a donation as small as five dollars from each student we can far surpass this goal donations can also actually be made at the santa's website as well as the cafeteria when you buy our lunch simply by telling the cashier you're donating to the fundraiser during the season of lent i urge everyone to take time to find those ways in order to help it is truly the smallest actions that add up over time that make an immense impact the difference you can make with the smallest donation or a little bit of time spent helping tutor somebody or even just taking time to be there for the ones you love and the ones who have sacrificed for you do not allow this focus to end with the 40 days of len during this season allow your habits to become a part of who you are because you will find that a life lived for others is the greatest fulfillment we can experience now robin williams once said if you're not making someone else's life better each day then you're not really living hear his words in the words of the gospel as we answer in the season of lent let us put sacrificial love to the forefront of our minds and our hearts as we consider the small change we make in our lives let us remember god's call to greater love and to those who need the most today we're very excited to welcome father josh cockrick from st charles bournemouth parma the best we can make him feel welcome is to participate with full voice and prayerful attitude please rise and join our opening song lord who through these 40 days [Music] so lord throughout these fourteen days [Music] did [Music] and through these days [Music] good morning everyone good morning my name is father josh i'm from saint charles and parma it's good to be with you today to celebrate the beginning of this new season of lent we gathered this morning in a spirit of prayer in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts and not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful he is slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage or reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord so [Music] be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion but out my offense oh wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow and cleanse me from all of my sins o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned my offense says truly i know them and my sins are always before me against you alone i have sinned o lord what is evil in your sight i have done be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for me [Music] in my soul cast me not away from your presence oh lord and take not your spirit from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of god uh [Music] glory to you the word of god lord jesus christ [Music] you the word of [Music] our god and life you have the words of everlasting life glory to lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not be you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord well it's good to be with you today this is my second time here at saint ed's last year i was here to celebrate the feast of saint joseph with you and uh it's good to be with you then too so i love celebrating mass i'm a recently ordained priest i was ordained in august of 2020. so my oldest brother ray uh was a graduate of st ed's high school i was not but he was i think he was something like mr saint ed's is that still a thing maybe i don't know if it if it is if it was that's something he had some kind of honorary title but he really loves seeing ed's and i i came to appreciate it growing up too i'm sure that many of us have traveled before right yes traveled all right whether you're traveling by car by train or by plane we've gone to visit someone we know who might live far away or we've gone to a particular vacation destination whatever we whatever it was you know we've traveled before and being away from our normal day in and day out routine gives us a reminder that the world around us is actually a bigger place and of course we come to appreciate that people even that don't live too far away they kind of have a different uh different routine a different lifestyle some of them even have different restaurants different stores those types of things now regardless of where we have gone or regardless of how far away we were regardless of how long it was we know that the journey we know what that journey is like when we finally reach our destination after a few days of being away though i'm not sure about you but usually after probably a few days of being away i tend to start that that reality of me having to come back home starts to set back in and uh and it's not always the greatest feeling of course but we do know that when we're away from home you know there are things that we miss there are things that we were used to that we are ready to go back to you know perhaps if you take care of things around your house you know those things have to get taken care of right uh if nobody's been doing them for a number of days we know that if we work uh or you know we have a career or a job we have emails that need to be replied to or a voicemail that needs to be listened to things that happen while we're gone we know that if we're in school and we're away for a period of time we have to catch up with our friends and our and our tests and papers are kind of piling up and they have to get done we know what that feeling is like and it isn't always a great one is it especially when we're in the midst of a vacation or something like that and sometimes it even causes us to become restless it causes us to start getting away from our vacation or from our trip and i think that's that's because perhaps the most difficult part of coming back home or coming back to our normal routine is the process of returning returning back home sometimes that return trip can be rather long and who knows what sort of obstacles could come up along the way for us on that return trip home the return trip is difficult to do but but it is necessary in order for us to get there ash wednesday what we're celebrating today is sort of like that moment when we get back into the car or we get back on the bus or the train or into the plane the season of lent is a season of returning home we return as catholics we return to that practice of prayer and fasting and alms giving shortly we're going to come down the aisle and we're going to receive those ashes and those ashes are going to remind us that we are dust and unto dust we shall return returning isn't always easy but it is necessary for us to get home i know that many lately have returned or are returning back to normal mass attendance and some have today especially are returning for the very first time in a while the past two years have not necessarily been a vacation that's for sure we've suffered through a lot over the past two years we've seen friendships destroyed we've seen family and friends become sick we've witnessed division occur in our workplace in our school and even in our own homes and as of the past few weeks we've even seen war we have suffered but we've suffered together these ashes that are being placed on our forehead they are a reminder for us that out of these ashes and out of this suffering comes the hope that christ will bring as he raises us to new life this easter my prayer for you all today is that we will find comfort knowing that the lenten season that we are entering in is one that we can return to god with our whole heart we will find strength from these ashes if we wear them knowing that we have a god who loves us who entered into our messy world and who only wants to bring us into the next so let's return to the lord today let us prepare to go back to him so that we can have a joyful joy-filled and hopeful lenten season invite y'all to please stand so that i can face these thank you my brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence o god who desire not the death of sinners but their conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we who acknowledge we are but ashes and shall return to dust may through a steadfast observance of lent gain pardon for sins and a newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen thank you [Music] so [Music] we rise again from ashes [Music] we rise again from ashes remember [Music] our grieving foreign [Music] [Music] the [Music] ashes the spring has turned to winter and sunshine [Music] will nurture growing and create our world [Music] [Music] who gave us life [Music] christ our savior who saved us by his death [Music] an offering to you we rise again from ashes from the good we fail to do we rise again from ashes [Music] [Music] an offering [Music] so [Music] kevin [Music] [Music] do [Music] my brothers and sisters as we continue into this mass we bring all of our prayers and petitions to the lord please respond to our prayers lord hear our prayer we pray that in this session of lent all people will treat each other with respect and that we will continue to reflect on what it means to see with eyes of faith let us pray to the lord we pray that during this season of reflection our nations will take a step back to remember how to interact with peace and mercy and especially the peace in ukraine we pray to the lord we pray for our saint edward community that during this season of lent we will remem we will be aware to those around us in need and to have the courage to reach out to them we pray to the lord we pray for the saint edward community may each of its members be moved to act as servant leaders and truly enter into actions of service prayer and sacrifice this lenten season we pray to the lord we pray for all of the intentions that we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord we bring to you all of these prayers and petitions those that have been spoken and those in the silence of our heart may they be granted and done in accordance with your will and in your time we make this prayer through christ our lord guys [Music] come back to me with all your heart don't fear keep us apart trees [Music] so must [Music] home to me and living deeply [Music] the wilderness [Music] will lead you to your heart [Music] integrity [Music] and justice [Music] you shall know [Music] long have i waited for your coming [Music] deeply [Music] you shall sleep [Music] secure with peacefulness and living deeply our new life [Music] [Music] so [Music] please stand pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer this the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you rest you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim [Music] r [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] until you come again therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you this the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion bring your church o lord to perfect faith and charity together with francis our pope and edward our bishop with all bishops priests and deacons and the entire people you have made your own open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened make us serve them truly after the example of christ and at his command and may your church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom to peace and justice that all people may be raised up to a new hope remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the apostles and martyrs with saint edward our patron saints and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] jesus taught us to call god our father and so we have the courage to pray together our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously
