strength in times of difficulty and we're certainly grateful that the Word of God is still active and able many of us right now are experiencing what the world calls quarantine that is you are right now in your home if you're in Atlanta you are in your homes right now because government has made a stipulation that we are to remain quarantine but aren't you glad that the Word of God cannot be incarcerated and since the Word of God cannot be incarcerated we are bringing you that on this morning so with your families and your small groups and your homes we hope and pray that you are ready for a great time in the Lord the Bible says God is spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth so at this time we're gonna have one of our Shepherds come forward brother Robert Wilson to give us our official welcome and just say hello to all of us good morning Renaissance and friends of Renaissance we want to say welcome to our live streaming thank God that we're able he has done to ensure that we stay spiritually connected one to another we just want to continue to pray for this world pray for this nation many people have lost lives because of this virus and we want to pray for families we want to be encouraged though that God has put a wrapped his arms around us and protected us we want to firmly believe that God has us in the palms of his hand remember those families of our congregation that lost loved ones yeah want to be encouraged by letting them know let them be encouraged by know that we are thinking and praying for them as always we are going you for your love your wisdom your understanding we pray for your healing at this time and we ask it all in Jesus name Amen okay we're grateful this morning to get started with our worship service we have now had prayer we've had our welcome and now we're gonna do something a bit different this morning our song leaders are not present this morning at this time we decided to do something a bit different while many of us under this this stipulation of quarantine we thought we'd give our guys a break of course thank God the the city has allowed us to still do live streaming but we're trying to be more careful in regards to the spread of the coronavirus and how it is increasing so today our goal is to do something a bit different we still want you to have a wonderful a cappella experience but there are no song leaders up here and I'm quite sure you do not want me to engage in a song leading feeis by myself you don't want me to be the song Li this morning nor do you want me to engage in a solo and praise the mighty name of Jesus those who don't agree with that don't say nothing I don't want you to agree with that statement at all I want you to just just recognize that I can sing if I wanted to but I'm not going to do that what we're gonna do is a flashback so for the acapella portion of our worship what we're going to do is actually flashback to some congregational singing so we are about to have two congregational songs right now as we flash back into when we were all together and then we're going to come back to our live stream so right now for the acapella portion of our worship service this is a flashback this is not actually happening right now it's a flashback where we're gonna go back and listen to some powerful congregational singing at a time when we were all coming together and hopefully it gets you excited for the day God is gonna bring us back into this place to engage in a powerful worship service let's have our flashback we're gonna have three congregate two or three congregational songs and then we'll have our Lord's Supper offering and then we'll get into today's message right now come back with us [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] Wow [Music] Oh [Music] Oh Oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I promise I truly [Music] even for right things they promised me along [Music] [Music] because now the people came in on my screen think this is a rerun and that's what's happening [Music] [Music] [Music] dancing [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] see mama listen patiently [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] good morning good morning again we've had some technical difficulties and we're trying to work through it but I think we're okay now so I think the law streams up we thought we missed it and we thought we made a big mistake here but it looks like God is good anyhow and we are back up and running so to that end we are okay the Lord is good and His mercy endures forever so we're we apologize for that hiccup I thought we missed and I know some of you heard me saying we missed but it looks like we missed but God put it back on target so we're good and we're praising God for that this is now we need to reiterate what you missed so what you missed was that this is an actual worship service however there's no one here we are practicing social distancing what we were doing we're doing a flashback of old congregational singing mixed with a live service so I am here about to preach and we are playing songs while we're doing some of the acts of worship so just be mindful that we were trying to do something very unique this morning and this is mixed with me being live as well as doing flashbacks so we're about to go into the Lord's Supper at this time we're about to go into the Lord's Supper and we want you all to join in with us after we do the Lord's Supper all while we're doing the Lord's Supper we're gonna flashback to a song so we're gonna be doing both vice versa here so I'm gonna lead us in the Lord's Supper and then we're gonna go back into a flashback this is all about helping you to miss church because when this is all over we want you to come back to the assembly that's what this is about and that's what we were attempting to do today if you've missed the beginning of service just know that we have a youtube link that caught all of it so make sure you go back to the beginning we did a real creative thing for you in the beginning of service and we want you to capture that great moment as well now that being the case we want to take a journey back to Jerusalem where we recognize that our Savior was hung bled and died in our place we recognized that he is our substitute genera sacrifice Romans five and verse number eight says while we were yet sinners Christ died for us and for us means that he died in our place and to that end we want to focus now on the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ in as much as the best dive for the worse the righteous died for the wretched he who was sinless died for the sinner and even right now we're asking you to join us in this communion right where you are with your families right where you are in your small groups we want you to engage in this very momentous occasion that the Christians engage in every first day of the week and if you listen carefully you can hear the Hammers ringing through the streets of Jerusalem as the nails penetrate the soft flesh of his hand hands that unstopped deaf ears and hands that healed blinded eyes hands that could make a crooked body straight these hands were able to bring about our salvation nailed to an old word across so right now we thank God for his sacrifice we thank God that Jesus was given in our place many times when people look at the death of Jesus Christ they see him dying for our sins but inclusive of that is dying in our place pray with me father God we ask you to be with us even now as we partake of the bread and the fruit of the vine we ask you O God to help us to focus our minds in such a way where we are undistracted that we are recognizing the death of Jesus father today we do not treat it as a funeral but as a celebration we celebrate the fact that our Savior not was Victor victorious on Sunday but he was victorious before Sunday he was victorious when he was on the cross and we say thank you Jesus for what you did for our salvation and father we're grateful that as we take this Lord's Supper we are looking forward with great anticipation for the return of your son that we might see him face and we promise to give you all the glory and all the honor it is in the matchless name of Jesus we pray amen even now partake of the Lord's Supper as we flash back to another congregation [Music] [Music] Oh Oh Oh we bring glory to God [Music] we [Music] if you come to bring them over [Music] we were we [Music] we will oh yeah [Music] yeah [Music] can't stop no [Music] [Applause] [Music] time because of who we were we [Music] [Music] you I love you Oh [Music] praise the mighty name of Jesus now we are about to go into our offering and we are excited all the time for our offering prayerfully the at the top of the chat box I hope is the link to give is that is that at the top of the chat box anybody can give me a cue on that the giving link okay if that giving links not at the top of the chat box please go to Renaissance COC dot-com and we would love for you to engage in your offering right now some of you do text to give which is wonderful so you can do the text to give right now or you can do or you can do the Renaissance COC dot-com at some point that set the giving link maybe at the top of the chat box so if it shows up please click it but right now we want everybody to engage in the offering before we get into the Word of God in just a moment so we're about to go into our giving and while we are here by ourselves we're gonna have another flashback to an offering song and we hope you're enjoying the flashback the whole idea is to just help you miss this worship help you miss coming together that was the idea behind this morning because we want you to be very mindful that the assembly is an important factor while God is allowing us to operate separate from it right now we know that we're gonna come back together at some point so let's enjoy as you do the offering right now make sure your offering right now I'm about to get my phone I'm about to give my offering in just a moment just so you know I am NOT giving fabrication here's my phone I'm going to open my phone I'm going to renaissance EOC and I'm about to give as I have prospered since God is still prospering me I am ensuring that we we all engage in giving God has prospered me this week that therefore I'm gonna give because the Lord has been good and I want to make sure I invest in the kingdom of God I know the kingdom has business I know the kingdom needs to be there for people in need and therefore we need to be about making we invest in the kingdom of God the Lord fixed it where regardless of all of the quarantine stipulations we can still give aren't you glad God as a provider God provides it's amazing how in spite of everything going on we are still able to engage in Kingdom activity so even right now we're going to ask you to engage in the offering as we have yet another flashback song even right now we want another flashback song as we engage in the offer [Music] [Music] oh my god [Music] yes my god is awesome [Music] the first person here oh yes and my god oh my god straight where [Music] my god [Music] yes my god is all [Music] we are thankful to once again have all of you who have any few glitches but we're okay with that we understand that when you're online these things can happen and we're okay with that we recognize that this is we're having a few glitches this morning but yet we're still excited about the Word of God so I'm gonna ask you even now as as we have engaged in the offering we have taken the Lord's Supper this morning we have had some flashbacks of the congregational singing we're just excited about what God is doing and how God is doing it so we want to at this time get ready for a word from the Lord and so we're excited I'm gonna ask each of you to turn with me to Matthew the 26th chapter turned with me to Matthew the 26th chapter and I want you to meet me in verse number 36 Matthew the 26th chapter and I want you to meet me in verse number 36 verse number 36 we're just thankful to God this morning for him being such a wonderful God and we're always grateful that he is able that he's powerful that our God is a caring God that recognizes our circumstances we want all of you to know that it's particularly in the city of Atlanta we are in fact under quarantine stipulations but we did get permission to continue live-streaming those who may be just getting on the livestream I want to reiterate that there is no one in this building and that we are we are staying consistent with the mandates of social distancing and we don't even have our song leaders here so what we have done is we have just given you flashbacks of great congregational singing so that you can enjoy the feel of being together and we're grateful to God for that kind of technology but we're certainly grateful for you and all of our viewers and we're thankful to God that everything is going well in the sense that we are able to be seen and so to that and we are grateful Matthew the 26th chapter I'm about to do something very unique this morning and I hope and pray that you enjoy it and I want to give you a word that I believe is relevant for us today I know many people right now are preaching in reference to the coronavirus I thought today we'll take a break from talking about Korona and talk a break from talking about the all this happening in the country and I want to talk about what may be happening with you and I want to return to preaching about Jesus and the gospel of Jesus Christ and so we are aware of all this going on in our country but I would hate for us to lose sight that Christ is I hope that Christ is our answer that Christ is our joy and I think sometimes if we give too much press to the corona we might suffocate our message about Jesus and right now we need to make sure that we are Jesus centered Christ focus as we give people a word from the Lord Matthew the 26th chapter beginning in verse number 36 and I'm gonna ask you to come with me down into about verse number 42 I'm reading from the new American Standard Version of the New Testament beginning in verse 36 the Bible says then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to his disciples sit here while I go over there and pray and he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be grieved and distressed then he said to them my soul is deeply grieved to the point of death remain here and keep watch with me and he went a little beyond them and fell on his face and prayed saying my father if it is possible let this cup pass from me yet not as I will but as you will and he came to the disciples and found them sleeping and said to Peter so you men could not watch with me for an hour keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak he went away again a second time and prayed saying my father if this cannot pass away unless I drink it your will be done again he came and found them sleeping for their eyes were heavy and he left them again and went away and prayed the third time saying the same thing once more then he came to the disciples and said to them are you still sleeping and resting behold the hour is at hand and the Son of man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners get up let us be going they hold the one who betrays me is at hand I'm gonna put a great deal of emphasis this morning on verse 41 verse 41 says keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak I'm going to preach from this pericope this section of narrative in this gospel but I want you to put on the chalkboards of your mind this morning the subject matter when my flesh and spirit have a conversation when my flesh and spirit have a conversation it is interesting that as we study through the life of Jesus Christ one of the most interesting things that I find from a theological perspective is that Jesus Christ in the doctrine of the Incarnation is 100% man and he is 100% God theologically what we call that is the Hoopoe static union many of you have heard me make reference for that before we're two natures reside in one person so when we're speaking about Jesus we are talking about him being God in the flesh there's an interesting concept because it means that God did not only come to dwell in flesh but God also became or took on human nature and so when I look at Jesus I am seeing within one person two natures in which he is both God and man simultaneously that theological concept helps me to put some things in perspective it is interesting that God is holy other it means that God is is nothing like man man is nothing like God but God took a moment in time for him to come down to us and to embrace human nature whereas he would now become this kupo static union of two natures in one person Jesus takes the leap of faith and he comes down to us and when he comes down to us Jesus Christ is God in the flesh he is 100% man he's 100% God which means divinity has come down to man and loved him enough to become who he wanted to save so Jesus Christ becomes who he wants to save is it interesting if I really followed that theologically is interesting that Jesus never took the time to become an angel because he never desired to save them angels also sin but he goes a little lower than the Angels he becomes a man and we find that Jesus Christ is me while at the same time being God well what that helps me to understand is there was an aspect of Jesus that understands the human experience it means that while I appreciate that He is God I'm also appreciate appreciative that Jesus Christ is in fact humanity that he is able to experience my life and experience my difficulties which makes him empathic and sympathetic to the struggles of the human of the human life while at the same time maintaining the integrity of being God it is interesting and powerful when you start thinking about the Incarnation of Jesus Christ that's theology and I understand that and I'ma be where you want me in a moment that's theology why are you starting with theology because before I get to the practical I want you to understand the theology what's the theology what's the doctrine aspect of this Christ is God in the flesh and therefore when experience has experienced human difficulty inclusive of temptation well that means Jesus Christ as the Hebrew writer would put it sits on the right hand of God right now as the god man who pleads my case he is God in the flesh and when he raises from the dead he goes back to heaven in a glorified body Christ is the first man in heaven well there is a man sitting on the right hand of God in glorified form he is the god man and he pleads my case right now how can he freed my place because he understands God but he understands man so he is able to operate in the integrity of God while at the same time being the very means by which God gives me mercy because his son sits on his right hand as God man and he is a mediator that is able to plead my case he has been tempted in all points yet he is without sin which means he is perfectly qualified to plead my case because he understands the human plight he understands the human difficulty he understands what it's like to be under the full pressure of temptation he has felt it all he knows what it's like to be crushed by the pressure because he deals with his human nature while at the same time being God it makes me fascinated with his humanity so some people can't think of God as becoming human because of the reality that we all understand what humans go through you understand what you go through and sometimes you think you're praying to a god that doesn't understand but the opposite is true you are praying to a God who fully understands and ensured that he would fully understand experientially by sending his son Jesus to experience our context aren't you glad that God is a in context God he is a God that comes into my context and and understands all that I am going through now that being the case I want to invite you to a time in the life of Jesus during the Passion Week it is recorded in four all four Gospels Matthew Mark Luke and John all record this experience of the Passion Week and in the climactic aspect of the Passion Week Jesus makes a decision to go to a place on the outside of Jerusalem across the kindred Valley called the Mount of Olives and Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives he resides there with his disciples and he goes to a specific aspect of the Mount of Olives which is an olive orchid that's called Gethsemane when he goes into Gethsemane he goes with his disciples the purpose is to pray and he acts some of his disciples wait here while I go further and he takes three of them with him he takes Peter James and John which some would call his inner circle or his closest disciples and he wick with them and even though he went with them he said at this point now you stay at this point and I'll go a little further if you don't mind I would like to suggest to you there is only but so far your friends can go with you there are moments when you have to have a moment with God and no one else is receiving an invitation it is that moment when your situation is so difficult that you while you want the support of friends in your circle there are those moments when you and God have to wrestle all by yourselves the truth be told all of us have a Gethsemane where friends are not always invited and although they love you and although they want to be with you and although you desire them to be with you there will be that moment in your life where you come to a crossroad where you and God have to have a conversation all by yourselves it is that moment when I am under such pressure that I can't handle everyone else I've got to talk to God all by myself come with me as far as you can but there is a place got simony well only you and doc have to wrestle all by yourselves and so here it is Jesus is in this place called Gethsemane the olive orchid cap simony translated means the Olive Press it is where there were grows there that were designed to crush the olive so we could get the content of the olive and they would crush it so that it could produce the content needed it is interesting that it was a place of crushing it was a place of external pressure that went onto the olive and as they would crush the olive the olive would produce that which was on the inside do you not know there was some stuff on the inside of you that God can't get out of you unless he crushes you there are moments where God has to crush you so that he can get out of you what's inside of you because sometimes what's inside of me won't come out of me unless God crushes me I wish I had two or three people that could relate to the idea that God when he crushed me most was when I produced best when God crushed me most is often when I produced best because God was able to get out of me what was inside of me because he put me through a pressing and a pressing moment some of my best days may not have felt good but it was what God was producing in me when he was crushing me I'm gonna tell you something that you need to know I don't care how much you read scripture I don't care how much Bible you can quote there will come a time when God's best teaching mechanism is when he crushes you because when God is pressing you that's when God is producing in you or that is when God can bring out of you what he needs to bring out of you because he put you through a situation there past you now it is when you go through that pressing moment that God has you in against simony and is in Gethsemane while you are pressed well you will find when your friends in your spirit have a conversation I'm about to show you something so interesting because all of us will have a Gethsemane moment and I need you to understand Jesus shows us the human experience and how the human being struggles because the human being has to specs of him that becomes dominant when it comes to influence there is the spirit part of you and there is a flesh part of you now when I use the word flesh I do not want you to understand flesh to be always referring to the human body but sometimes the word flesh in its various ranges of meaning can also connote and denote the idea of human nature I have a human nature that is often inclined to selfish interest you have a spirit part of you that's inclined to God interest and sometimes the flesh part of you and the spirit part of you are having a disagreement because they both have different interests there is that part of me that has this inclination toward selfish preservation or selfish interest that's my human nature because human nature will always think of itself first and so when I'm in a situation and I'm in a predicament my human nature says you first everyone else second because my human nature has suffered interest my spirit man is where God communicates with me and my spirit man is often under the influence of God desires to follow God desires to submit to God but at the moment of my crushing I've got my flesh saying one thing and my spirit saying something else and my flesh and spirit are in a conversation about the very same situation and sometimes my flesh seems to get the best of me sometimes my spirit is getting the best of me they are looking at the same thing from two different perspectives do I have anybody on a live stream right now that knows something about when your flesh is saying one thing and your spirit is saying something else and it's looking at the very same situation there is a human interest there is a divine interest and in the same mind you've got two different conversations spirit and flesh having a conversation in the moment of your crushing in your Gethsemane when you realize that there is something that you have to go through that you really do not want to go through and God is speaking to you in your spirit but your flesh is speaking a whole different conversation what do you do when your flesh in your spirit are having a conversation come with me in this text and let me show you something quite powerful and you I think you're going to see something that is going to challenge you come to verse 36 with me please walk with me through this text then Jesus came with them to the place called Gethsemane the Olive Press and said to his disciples sit here while I go over there and pray mmm powerful language sit here while I go over there sit here while I go over there sit here while I go over there and all of you know something about a place called their-their sit here because when I go over there is gonna be about me and God there is a ver place that everybody has to go to where no one else can be invited it is the their place it is theirs anybody ever been there have you ever been in that their moment when no one else can be invited into this space because you know the only person that can help you in this situation is God all by himself you appreciate the support but sit here while I go pray there because there's only but so far you can come with me in this circumstance watch the steps he took with him Peter the two sons of Zebedee and began to be grieved and distressed then he said to me my soul oh god if I had time my soul is deeply grieved to the point of death Jesus is under extreme emotional agony to the point where Jesus perhaps even may be using hyperbolic language says I am grieved in my soul unto death he says my soul is deeply green um let me explain to you life is so difficult and can be so difficult and you can go to a situation so trying and so pressing that it makes it into the sacred space of your life call your soul and let me tell you when you have unmanaged emotions in your soul it can plague you to the point where it's a crushing feeling that makes you almost debilitate it because you've allowed something to impact you in your sacred space called the soul it's that inner part of you this stuff don't show up on x-rays you can go to the doctor and look perfectly healthy physically but you can be a person that is struggling in your soul and when you get an x-ray this don't show up on soul this doesn't show up on an x-ray when your soul is stressed and you are in an agony Jesus identified where the agony takes place if you want to know where agony happens it happens in the context of your soul it is in that inner space it is that inner me they're struggling with something that it cannot handle and Jesus at this very moment is in a situation where he says my soul is is deeply breathe and distress he said to me he said or rather my soul is deeply grieved to the point of death Jesus said it's so grieved that it feels like I'm about to die I don't know who can relate to that I don't know who can relate to a stress so heavy that you feel like you're but I am grieved unto death it is such a crushing weight of emotional agony that I feel in my soul that this is a stress or a deeply grieved to the point of death remain here keep watch with me he said I need you to watch I need you to watch I need you to sit here I'm gonna go there but you watch and pray but you can't go no further so Jesus verse 39 says and he went a little beyond them fell on his face and pray watch the prayer my father if it is possible oh please stay with me here let this cup pass from me yet not as I will but as you will cannot dive into that just for a few minutes watch this Jesus says first of all I need you to understand Jesus solution to a deeply grieved soul is prayer I need you to understand the solution to a deeply grieved soul is to engage an intimate prayer with God now watch this it doesn't mean the prayer will be easy or that the prayer will be a quick fix but prayer to God in an intimate way allows you and God to have an exchange in which he will take your anxiety and he'll replace it with strength I want you to listen to this watch this watch this father that this cup now the cup here it's not a physical vessel but the word Cup is used as a figure of speech in which the cup is representative of an experience the experience of the cup is suffering now in Matthew 10 and verse I believe is 22 and following Jesus mentions to the sons of Zebedee it is interesting that one of the mothers said it give it to my son to sit on your right hand and on your left hand and Jesus responds by saying can you drink the cup that I'm gonna drink not a physical vessel is it concepts he was speaking about a cup of suffering Jesus sees that cup before him even right now in the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus says that this cup what cup it is the cup that is an experience that I have to go through that I've always known I had to go through but I am not willing to drink this experience that God has appointed in front of me listen to me have you ever a struggle we're drinking a cup that God designed for your life there is when God has put a cup in front of you that is an experience you have to drink and you struggle with whether or not to drink the cup it is not a cup of liquid it is an experience that is so difficult that God says Jesus says father Oh God I'm a dive into this let this cup pass from me now this this event is located in mark 14 is also in Luke 22 it is in the Synoptics in detail mark and Matthew write most about it it is interesting that Jesus says in mark's account he says father with you all things are possible yeah but what can't you do I mean listen you your everything is within the scope of your power in other words what I'm asking you right now father you could do it you could remove this Cup because with you all things are possible I know in my theological understanding God father I am clear that you have the power you've got the capacity to remove this cup so I'm asking you I don't want to drink this I don't want to drink that I don't I don't want to drink I don't want to drink it I don't want to drink what's this Jesus prays for something he knows God cannot affirm while knowing that God could change it he knows if God changes it it is the opposite of God's will so is not that God can't change it is that what I'm asking God to do is not within the context of his will so Christ is actually praying for what he knows God won't do Oh God so then what is Jesus doing when Jesus asks God to remove that Cup that's his flesh talking help me Jesus his flesh is asking God to do something that's his harmony with flesh interest so although he's praying to God the aspect of the prayer or the one that's doing the talking here is flesh Jesus human nature Jesus says god I know that it is within your power to let this cup pass watch this but watch how spirit starts talking nevertheless not my will but you will all God help me Jesus listen he says flesh says father let this capaz Spirit says nevertheless not my will but thine will be done Jesus right now in the one prayer that he's given to God is having a fresh spirit conversation flesh is saying let's think about ourselves here yes I don't know time to be selfless listen flesh says drinking that cup has everything to do with what I have not done I didn't sin against God and it's sin against God these are not my sins these are not my wrongdoings but these are not my issues so what I am being asked to do is actually take the place of evildoers and for a moment in time suffer as if I am guilty when I know that in my divinity I am absolutely only I am innocent I am perfect but now I'm asking to suffer as if I am imperfect as if I am the evil one as if I am the sinner that says we don't want to drink that Cup no one's like that I don't want to I don't wanna drink that I don't want to drink that I don't wanna drink that oh well who's praying at that point flesh nevertheless not my will but thine will be done spirit now watch this for the sake of time Jesus is going to do this prayer three times well the first thing I want to suggest to you there is nothing wrong with redundant prayer imma show you why in just a minute there's nothing wrong with redundant prayer when you are in a crushing when you're in the Olive Press when God is trying to bring something out of you that's inside of you by allowing you to experience or crushing and oppressor nothing wrong with redundant prayer I'll do you one better there will be moments when you're gonna pray to God and you're gonna ask him for something that's not in his will oh it will happen I know that you may be thinking that I know how to pray you might be thinking I'm so spiritual and always yeah then let me tell you even Jesus the Son of God in his human nature prayed for something Oh God not hearing me on livestream your life if you hear this if you really whip me right now I need you to put in that box I hear what you saying preacher listen even Jesus I can't stand over these sanctified people that think that their prayer life is so in order that they know exactly what to say to God just because you know Jehovah Jireh Jehovah Nissi a few other big words in the Hebrew text does not mean you always know how to pray because your human nature will always have moments when it relies on its selfishness there will always be a moment when you pray to God and your flesh seats inside of the prayer and your friend starts asking God for something that is opposite of the will now here is the conundrum is we pray to God because he know we know that he can if God wanted to God could actually grant my selfish wish but God will never do what is opposite of his will so what is Jesus doing in his humanity mmm in his humanity he's praying father let this cup I want to drink this now here's here was it cannot go little further than that last room if I can go a little further tell me keep going all right Jesus was present within the context of eternity when a precursor meeting took place and the agenda was constructed within the Godhead that he would be the sacrificial lamb that was suffer for all of humanity he was Jesus was at the meeting as a matter of fact when Jesus comes to this earth and he becomes God in the flesh when he is the incarnation to Hoopoe static Union two natures one person when he gets here he starts telling people slowly revealing to his disciples his mission first time we really see it is when Jesus is 12 years old and when he's 12 years old he goes to the synagogue and they left him in the synagogue and they forgot that he was left behind he stayed behind and when he went back to get him they found him in the temple and they found him teaching and excuse me questioning and asking questions and he says to the woman don't you know I must be about my father's business blimp says in to his purpose right Jesus goes further and he he thought he always understands there's a time there's a time for him there's a time for him there's a time let me tell you if I had time I will show you a lot of your destiny is located in time in other words God sometimes times your destiny and sometimes I'm trying to rush something that God has timed if I had time to talk about that I would sometimes I'm trying to rush something that God has time and sometimes my prime clock and God's time lock doesn't line up but anyway Jesus was very clear about time time time you remember when he was at the wedding of Cana of Galilee and he was actually Mary said I need you to fix this situation we've run out of wine and Jesus says woman my hour has not yet come he was always conscious of time time time Jesus always knew what his purpose was he knew what he knew at the time was he was clear about timing there was other plans when he recognized he was so clear with time that he would say okay now it's time for us to go to Jerusalem and when he said it was time to go to Jerusalem Peter said no master we're not going to Jerusalem to die and he turned around and said Satan get thee behind me why because Jesus understood his purpose he understood the time he was at the meeting before the foundation of the world he was there when they came up with the plan he was there when he was chosen to be the sacrificial lamb he was present and at a moment in time in the garden of gethsemane in the Olive Press the closer you get to a situation that you know you have to experience all of a sudden in a moment in time this human nature says I don't want to drink that cup sometimes you can know what you may have to go through and the closer you get to it the more difficult it becomes because you start recognizing that I'm getting closer to something I don't want to go through and at that moment in time you start saying I don't want to drink that cup because that's not a cup I want to ingest what are you talking about I'm not talking about liquid I'm talking about an experience and experience and I don't want to go through that and there's all of a sudden there's this cut there's this cup in front of Jesus and what's this oh Jesus this one gets me um this one makes me nervous in my own life you may not even understand this one and that's okay but it's for me sometimes I gotta preach to you and me at the same time sometimes your pain is tied to your destiny and that's that might be for me it's it's your pain is is time to destiny so there is a there is a cup that's in front of you that is tied to destiny but you don't want to drink the cup because the cup is associated with painful process but the painful process is the very thing that you got a drink in order to forgot to get you the purpose right so what happens is and everybody can deal with that in different aspects of their life everybody will have moments when there's a cup you got a drink and sometimes what you got a drink is tied to destiny I could think of that in so many ways sometimes let me think of a worldly secular example sometimes I gotta try to go through or maybe I have chosen a career choice that's gonna require me to first go in debt before I ever get wealth right it's it's painful I mean I'm gonna go in debt before I ever get well I have to actually endure a debt full experience because wealth is waiting on the other side of me having enough faith to go into debt only a businessman would understand you only person with Korea would understand I'm gonna go into debt to get this degree this medical degree but if I get this medical degree all that debt that I'm in I'll pay it off but I gotta go and get today because my career's waiting on the other side of that so is what I'm willing to go through to get to where I'm trying to go sometime there's a cup in front of you and if you ain't got enough fake to drink the cop then you'll never get to the destiny that's in front of you there are cops in front of you and there's destiny in front of you and now you have to figure out that your flesh sometimes will get nervous and say no we got to think about self-interest self-interest is I'm not drinking that because I have to protect me and I need to make sure I'm okay and I need to make sure I'm good and drink that you asking me to drink something that's got to do with everybody else's welfare well you you're asking me to consider more than me in this moment in time and I don't want to drink this cup because I'm talking like Jesus now ain't do it I didn't do it I knew I knew it ain't I ain't still ain't she I didn't do it and you're asking me Father I know we had the meeting but I've got a change of heart now that I am embracing human nature I am God in flesh and now that I have this human nature experience I am having a selfish moment I didn't do it and I don't want to experience being the sacrifice suffering for a moment as f guilty as I'm holy always been holy I'm holy holy holy I'm God flesh I'm but now I'm dealing with this human nature and I'm having a moment where my flesh is talking to my spirit and my spirit is talking back to my flesh and they don't always agree and so I need you the third party to step into the conversation that's going on in my mind because my flesh and my spirit are having a conversation and they don't agree the flesh is self-interest the spirit is inclined toward you and I'm struggling with my human nature I want to protect me but I know I have to be willing to experience some degree of pain if I'm trying to get to destiny if I'm trying to get to that place where there's healing that place where there is that that place where there can be wholeness I gotta go through this first this before I get glorified I gotta get crucified mmm before I get glorified I gotta get crucified before I get glorified I gotta get crucified I've got to die to live with these interesting conundrums right this these these these oxymoronic statements I gotta live and I got to die in order to live I got a I got to be buried in order to raise I gotta be crucified to be glorified and Jesus says I don't want this cup I know what it is to go through that battle where you have to go through pain for purpose and your flesh and your spirit don't see it the same way I'd like to invite you into a conversation that I had with myself over an experience that I struggled with much of that experience I'm talking about right now in this sermon where I had to undergo a lot of attack hatefulness and hurt God was trying to move my ministry to the next level but I had to be willing to go through pain in order to get there he put a cup in front of me you know what that cup was that cup was tell the truth and I didn't want to drink it because I know if I drank that cup of tell the truth he was gonna make a lot of folk uncomfortable and upset with me he's gonna make some people who at one time elevated me want to kill me one assassinate my character and when I'm on me and I knew that the burning in my spirit to tell the truth was combat it by my flesh that said is not worth it but God is saying if my truth is truth and if my truth is powerful I need you to focus on my truth because on the other side of this plane I'm gonna bring your ministry to a deeper level of purpose but if you're afraid to drink it then what you're gonna do is go opposite of my will well what's opposite of God's will not telling the truth and here it is I'm faced with a situation where I either tell the truth or I don't tell the truth if I tell the truth my ministry might end up getting attacked on my line I got to go through all kind of character assassinations and and the cop was right there one late night do you drink it do you not drink it cuz I felt it pulling in my spirit that I want to take the church into a deeper level of knowledge and understanding not not a not some kind of new revelation because revelations always been there but a deeper understanding of what we're reading and helped him understand context and I went through this whole thing of trying to push the church this was my battle you got your own battle you you're online right now you got your own thing that you can think about right now where you have to think about a cup in front of you and this battle between your flesh and spirit this was my battle this is kind of what I'm talking about is do I tell the truth and risk the comfort and safety of being accepted Oh God do I risk being accepted to tell the truth I mean right now I'm doing gospel meetings all across the country not right now but back then I'm doing gospel meetings all across the country everybody loves him everybody's elevating him he Orpheus is great he is the champion of the COC with his thinking God he is of the lineage of great preachers and he is the one that's gonna help to make sure that the church is stable and I got all of this ice on me because you are supposed to be the great one you are the one that's gonna take the church into a deeper understanding of the faith and I had a moment when I said to do that I have to tell the truth do I do that God if I tell this truth you know how many phone calls dislike me all of a sudden I'm not gonna have popularity anymore I'm starting to enjoy popularity I'm enjoying the comfort of where I am I don't have the risk I'm safe here all I got to do is keep preaching what folk have always heard and I stay accepted I won't drink that cut my flesh said don't drink that you're gonna risk it all why risk it spirit says tell the truth so I prayed to God because I felt the weight in the brain in my spirit to tell the truth and I said father if it's possible let that cup pass from me give it to somebody else because I'm safe now I want to invite you now into a conversation at that time that I had between my spirit and my flesh and tell me if you can relate Quinton you can go ahead so I can sense that you're conflicted so tell me how can I help you this time I am so tired fact that really just died I mean I have been tired accused mischaracterize and the object of people saying all I really wanted to do is teach people the Word of God and give them more cloudy when it comes to Scripture the way this is turned out radio programs I've been designed to tear down our character our Facebook threads to discredit my ministry I mean who signs up for something like this with the very people you're trying to help the very ones that are trying to crucify I mean this has turned out to be a curry of pain and agony but all I really attempted to do was what was right I don't think this is something I want to have you ever considered that maybe this is not really a career maybe we ought to redefine this as a calling after all you need to recognize that you're here to do god's purpose and doing god's purpose is not always inclusive of being comfortable if you take the time to focus on the glory of God and you will not be distracted by the actions and behaviors you see this is why we can't have an agreeable conversation because you always want to do what's right at this point I want to do what's right for me I mean you never see my perspective you want me to be maliciously treated and accepted at the same time at this point I got to find my life's direction so all of this ridicule and all the things I'm going through you want me to just keep taking it does this make sense to you well there's a couple of things I need you to understand number one I need you to know that you're God's property and not your own just like every other Christian the second thing I want you to understand is you have been called to fulfill God's purpose our lives are used to execute his produce thirdly I need you to be mindful that Jesus Christ also suffered at the hands of malicious people however for the joy set before him he endured the cross James tells us that counted all joy when we fall into divers temptations knowing this that they're trying about faith it works patience also be anxious for nothing but everything to God by prayer and by supplication so I need you to understand this is designed to build you not kill you and the suffering of this world is not worthy to become an see you do this every time I didn't ask for no sermon or no scripture as soon as I start telling you what I think you want to start quoting God we are never going to agree on this you have what you think I have what I think at this point we're done this conversation doesn't need to keep going because you're really not the one going through well actually we both are but one in the same remember we just see it from two different perspectives you're seeing it from your selfishness I'm seeing it from my selflessness at the end of the day we probably need a third party I'm willing it's just that you're weak [Music] we need a third party we need somebody to step in between your battle between your flesh and spirit because your flesh and spirit operate on two different principles your flesh has this inclination toward self-interest spirit has this inclination toward God I think Paul even said one time with my spirit I serve God but with my flesh I serve sin human interest but you need that third party so can I tell you what happens in the garden that's in Luke's account Luke 22 and down into that chapter where it's the parallel account to Matthew the fourteenth meexcuse me Matthew the 26th chapter when Jesus prays three times I want you to write this down sometimes you don't pray to change God's will you gotta pray to line up with God's will that's a whole different concept of Prayer Jesus in his authentic self knows that the will of God cannot be placed but he needs strength and so what this prayer moment is about is in his flesh while he says God if it be possible let this cup pass from me nevertheless not my will but thine will be done Jesus what are you doing I can't change God's will my praying is to line up with God what God has already said in his will prayer is not always about changing God sometimes prayer is about changing you have you considered that when you're praying to God sometimes in God's no answer God's no answer is really an opportunity for you to line up with God's will as opposed to you praying to change God's will Jesus is praying man I can't change it I understand and who God is maybe Jesus is praying these three times because it's the same prayer as a matter of fact not only is it the same prayer the Bible goes on to say Matthew Scott he said the same thing what are you doing Jesus I'm not praying to change his will I'm praying to line up with his will I am NOT praying because I'm trying to change God I'm praying because I need to change me and in this change I'm trying to get my will to line up with him his so that I can quiet my flesh and live in my spirit I'm trying to quiet my flesh so I can live according to my spirit because there are times in your life when flesh is real loud which I had two or three witnesses that can admit that sometimes my flesh is talking real loud my selfish interests are talking real loud and it's in the prayer that sometimes is not God giving me what I want I'm praying for strength for God to line me up with what he already said so praise the mighty name of Jesus what happens in Luke 22 God sends angels to strengthen Jesus right in the midst of his prayer can I tell you if you're praying with an open spirit God knows how to meet you and your prayer and strengthen you with strength you don't have and all of a sudden Jesus gets up here's what's interesting he comes to his disciples this is the pivotal verse he comes his disciples and they sleep Jesus says when he's sleeping like why are you sleeping that struggle with this tooth because unless you read all of the Gospel accounts you're gonna miss this why are you sleeping like you need you need to watch and pray and then Jesus makes the provocative statement he says the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak here saying watch this he didn't say your spirit is willing any your flesh is weak he's with generic the Spirit is willing and the flesh is weak because Jesus said their point is including himself all of us are here watching and praying because right now the Spirit is willing but our human nature is weak I need you not to sleep this is time to pray are they sleeping when I first read this in my days of unfortunate study I didn't know how to make sure I read throughout all four Gospel accounts so I could collaboratively interpret the experience but if you read Luke's account it says when they were sleeping it was a sleep of sorrow who they were not sleeping because they didn't care they were sleeping because they were scared it was a steep of sorrow it was a sleep of grief do you not know that one of the stress reactions that you can have is that in your deepest worries sometimes people find comfort and refuge and trying to sleep as if you can out sleep you're worried they're reacting by sleeping jesus said this ain't time to be caught up in your sorrow the flesh that's weak right now I'm not condemning you for sleeping in as much as sleeping as a necessity I'm condemning you or I'm encouraging you because I need you to know you need to address your sorrow because your sorrow is what's happening in your soul and you can't address what's happening in your soul by sleeping you got to pray so that God can send you some strength and I don't know if you hear right now online with us but I want to talk to you and encourage you as I close this we'll be that moment when your spirit it's having conversation with your flesh and you need a third party and that third party is God that may not be cryptic so that you're not missing this there are cups that God will appoint in your life that you have to go through and your flesh is gonna want to protect you when your spirit is gonna want to do the will of God because sometimes this cup is never really only about you the cup is about you going through an experience that is for God's purpose and the greater good of people and sometimes drinking that cup let me talk back to my cup I had to think about what was going to be the greater good for the church if I drink that cup of telling the truth I had to think about what's gonna be best for the church what's gonna be best for the people of God to not tell the truth or to tell to worry about my career you heard me you heard my spirit tell my flesh maybe I was not call it a career I need to call it a calling right that my spirit had to tell my flesh that and in their conversation I'm having I'm trying to help myself understand that the Spirit is telling me this is a calling and if it's a calling it's not just about a career and if it's about a calling then I have to do what's best that's in harmony with God's purpose so I drink the cup yep in my experience I got a time but not maligned I got hurt that I lost popularity at least in some sense many people would argue that so you're more popular today than I've ever been I don't know don't care the point is not about the popularity the point was about purpose drinking a cup that caught appointed and that cop said tell the truth if I was going to tell it I had to go through some pain before I could move the church into destiny I don't know but your flesh spirit struggle is I don't know what all I'm suggesting to you is when your selfish interest your human nature is talking and your spirit is talking they will often disagree and the reason you pray Jesus did it three times I don't care if you gotta pray 10 times the reason you redundantly pray is so that you give yourself time for your flesh to line up with your spirit and ultimately for to get your will to line up with God that that's why you pray so you don't pray to change God sometimes you pray to change you sometimes his no is sufficient and you got to accept his know his Noah's not agree vyas no it's not a malicious no it's not a punishment now sometimes what God wants you to understand is although I can change this I can't grant you what's not in harmony with my will and so as you go through this redundant plan I need you to get lined up with me because Jesus is praying knowing you can't change God's will go back and listen to it so that you can understand it's interesting that got Jesus oh man if at times Jesus actually leans on a truth but sometimes you can quote truth with an ulterior motive and that's little sinful but you can quote a truth that you believer is in harmony with your selfish interest because sometimes we'll try to take a selfish interest and house it in truth explain that Jesus said God all things are possible is that not true for God God you can do anything is that not true he can that is a theological truth that is a concrete truth but when Jesus says that Jesus is saying that because his humanity wants God to take away the cup God take that cup away and guess what God I know you can so what Jesus up to do he has to pray that his will get lines up with God and that's what he's doing in the God that gets to me are you here right now and you've had a garden of gethsemane are you in the place of crushing God is trying to get out of you something so powerful but he's got a crush you to get it you got a drink this cup in order to get to destiny you got to be willing to go through the painful process in order to get the purpose and if you can get there and endure it and endure it and endure it go go through it ain't nobody told you to stop in it I go through it go go through it go through it go through it go through it go through it because sometimes and I've always said this and I believe this and praise the mighty name is Jesus William Johnson has always said this and he said it to me since I first got here he says if you always do what's on the side of right you let God take care of the rest you do the will do the will I don't care if you're dealing with an enemy I don't care if you're dealing with somebody's mistreat you you don't stink down to that level you do the well and as you do the will of God as you do his will that God take you through the process because on the other side of the process is glory it's destiny it's destiny so I hope that helps you to navigate this whole flesh spirit situation when my spirit has a conversation with my flesh I need God to be the third party that steps in God will give you strength to do what to drink the cup that you don't want to drink and then you move forward and you do the wheel Jesus told the disciples get up be ready now let's go let's go sciples got up they weren't ready though because they didn't pray they slept so they really wasn't ready it is unfortunate that they weren't ready I know Peter wasn't ready because he should have been praying it really should have been praying because in a few days a few hours really because he didn't pray and because he did not allow himself to have a change where his will line up with God you know he was he was about a fire he's got and some folk came up to me said hey are you not one of his disciples nah that wasn't me I was somebody else hey hey bro no no I know you was with him yes you were no that was me I don't make me cuss you out well of course cus they don't mean cuz like we mean cuz that's Orpheus translation don't make me say something I got no business saying what are you doing Peter Jesus prayed three times to get his spirit lined up with God Peter denied Jesus three times maybe he said have been praying the three to get a better three outcome and because he did not pray and he was not feeding his spirit and quieting his flesh Peter ends up in a position of denying Jesus however all of us will have that moment this is if I had to leave you with a good life higher point on that Peter failed but he still preached on Pentecost because I'm glad God doesn't let me drown in a failure I'm glad God can see pass a snapshot in my movie and I'm glad God could move me to another scene and he's able to get me to my Pentecost because some of us when people fail we just throw them off the ship but I'm glad God says no no that was just a Peter moment I'm glad God has more moments for me to live so that I can get it right and if you're here and you're online if you want to be saved and you're in Atlanta Georgia watching this we want you to know that Jesus Christ died for your
