jesus christ the same yesterday and today and forevermore be not carried about with divers and strange doctrine for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace not with meats which have not profited them that have been occupied therein we have an altar where of they have no right to eat which serves the tabernacle for the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin i burn without the camp wherefore jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his own blood suffered without the gate let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp bearing his reproach for here have we no continuing city but we seek one to come by him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to god continuously that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks unto his name may god bless the hearers of his word if anybody has a reason to sing if anybody has a reason to sing we do oh we do if anybody has some reasons to sing we do oh we do iron to the cross my death from the cross to the grave from the grave to the sky lord i lift your name on [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] who you are [Music] is [Music] my dad from the cross to the grain from the grave to the sky lord [Music] lord i lift your name on high brothers and sisters this is the communion this is the opportunity for us to take a moment each and every lord's day to stop and to think a lot closer and deeper on our lord and savior jesus christ the bible tells us in matthew 26 beginning at 26 that our lord and savior he while they were eating he took the bread and he blessed it and he broke it and he gave it to his disciples telling them to eat of it for it was his body he then went on to take the cup and he gave it to his disciples telling them that that cup was a representation of his blood and a covenant that he was making with them and that that blood would be poured out for many and that it would be for forgiveness of sin and he explained to them before he left that he would not partake of participate in this supper again with them until they join him with his heavenly father in heaven and as christians we have this opportunity each and every week to think about our lord and savior jesus christ a reminder to what joshua told israel that god was holy and that god is a jealous god holy meaning that he's separate and he's above from anything else and he wants to be treated extra special and if we truly understand the sacrifice that he made for us that he we would treat him that way and that he was also a jealous god that he was a god that took vengeance on those that did not follow him he did so much for us he left his throne in heaven he came down on earth he became his man he allowed himself to be separated from his father that one moment so that we may have an opportunity to spend eternity with his father in heaven with that on our mind let us go to our heavenly father in prayer heavenly father we thank you father for this moment a moment that father we pray that we never take for granted a moment where we have a chance to stop and reflect reflect on the many ways that you have blessed us and that you continue to bless us that we will be thankful for this blood and the sacrifice that you made and we pray that you will bless this bread and that you will bless this cup that as we partake of it father that our hearts and minds will be in the right place so that this sacrament will be pleasing in your sight and we ask it all in your darling name amen salvation has been brought down [Music] reach the word of god [Music] is [Music] jesus gave his life foreign [Music] is [Music] that we might win salvation is full and freedom [Music] all alone without [Music] victory be found praise is [Music] we [Music] is [Music] amen amen salvation has been brought down brothers and sisters this is the offering at this moment each and every first day of the week we have an opportunity to give back um in a manner according to how god has blessed you and we think about first corinthians chapter 16 you know paul as he was participating in his evangelistic journey he would take up collections for the saints that as he would go around they'd be able to help take those take care of those brothers and sisters and and in the book of first corinthians chapter 16 he reminds him that he says now concerning the collection of before the saints as i directed the churches of galatia so you also are to do on the first day of the week um each of you is to put something aside and store it up as he may prosper so that there will be no collections when i come you know god continues to make a way out of no way and if you think about it each and every day and each and every week we tend to have the things that we need and some of us know what it what it means to start the week not knowing if you're going to make it and then all of a sudden some way god makes the way but we have an opportunity at this moment to give back according to how god has blessed you you can do it in a variety of ways if you're here in the building we have our kiosks outside we also have our black containers that you can put your cash or checks inside of and then of course online you can do it via text or go onto our website so at this time give according to how god has blessed you [Music] oh [Music] oh have faith in god and the lord will be [Music] god [Music] and the lord will provide let us go to heavenly father in prayer all wise and powerful god we approach that throne at this time once again thank you father for this moment thank you father for the ability to be able to give and thank you father for blessing us with the resources to put us in this position we thank you father because in so many ways you bless us often blessing us far beyond what we truly deserve making sure that we have the things that we need and not always the things that we want but making sure that we're in a position to be able to sustain ourselves and also to be able to help other brothers and sisters in need we pray father that what we receive that as leaders of this congregation that we will use it in a manner that is pleasing in your sight in jesus name amen well i want to say once again good morning good morning renaissance none of our brothers and sisters here you all look good this morning we know it's early some of y'all haven't even had your coffee or your donuts or maybe on your third coffee this morning we want to thank you guys for coming this morning also those of you are joining us at home or wherever you are online around the world i'm going to ask everyone here in the building to stand up kind of shake off the the morning drowsiness as we say and turn around wave to your brothers and sisters greet one another it's always a blessing when you got up there's many brothers and sisters right now that are dealing with the loss of loved ones but anytime you have an opportunity to see another day and also another opportunity to worship we ought to be thankful for and when i think about that thankfulness is something i think sometimes we really don't take for granted we take for granted uh there's so many people in need right now i know we feel like we're coming out of the pandemic but there's a lot of people that are still dealing with a lot of trauma a lot of stress a lot of strain some people are still trying to figure out a way you may be working but there's people still looking for jobs there's just a lot of different things people are being deplete displaced but think about this you were able to get up this morning under your own power go to the bathroom by yourself get your own self dressed drive the church or have somebody drive you to church to be able to come in have someone take your temperature give you a communion cup allow you to walk in find your seat sitting here this morning looking all pretty and getting ready to hear a beautiful word i think we take that for granted some of us know what it's like to take care of someone who can't do any of those things so if you have the ability even if your knees hurt even if your back hurt while you do it even if you got a headache even if your children or your spouse got on your nerves even if you didn't feel like doing it this morning and you know you don't want to go to that job again tomorrow you still got blessed and you got up this morning so anytime you have this opportunity you ought to be thankful and you ought to be willing to sing praises to the lord so you know god has blessed us with a minister who has this unique ability to espouse god's word and we pray and once you continue to pray for him as he gets ready to come before us this morning that whatever god is giving him that he'll be able to give it back to us in a manner that's clear and concise like i tell orpheus give it to me on the fourth grade level you know i'm smart but i'm dumb at the same time but give it to us in a way that we'll understand it so as we get ready for the word i'm gonna ask you to join our praise team they work hard to make sure that they sing right they hum right they they all in this below give us this melodious manner so i need you to join us through those masks as we get ready to hear god's word [Music] oh [Music] before [Music] down [Music] come to [Music] is [Music] this is holy brown so come in [Music] [Music] down down [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] a door [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] down [Music] oh [Music] praise the mighty name of jesus how many of you know he's a good god this morning you ought to worship him this morning yeah yeah [Music] enter into this place where god wants to take oh we thank him this morning we're everyone should always be in the posture of bow down uh the posture that suggests that god is king and that he is in fact the one who has blessed us with another day of life we should look at jesus as not just savior but lord and if he is in fact lord then someone ought to bow down uh worship is an intimate moment where the subjects get the opportunity to let the king know that he is adored and for that we are in fact eternally grateful i want to quickly turn to first timothy chapter two i got a lot to say in a short amount of time and need to jump in give you time to be shocked and give you a moment to to appreciate it first timothy chapter two let's see here i have an announcement for the young adults i just can't pull it up for some reason but i would love to get that announcement before before worship's over i will get ready to pull it up but there's an announcement from our young adults we'll get to that momentarily all right first timothy chapter 2 i'm going to begin in verse 8. therefore i want the men in every place to pray lifting up holy hands without wrath and dissension likewise i want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing modestly and discreetly not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments but rather by means of good works as is proper for women making a claim to godliness a woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness but i do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man but to remain quiet for it was adam who was first created and then eve and it was not adam who was deceived but the woman being deceived fell into transgression but women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint if you're here and you want to be a child of god i now ask you to give your life to jesus and we are done with our services that's about all i want to say about these passages we're on part two of the role of the woman in the new testament church and i want to first be sure that we explicate and that we are clear theologically about the foundation of this series part one we took great lengths to lay a foundation of what is submission and i believe if you would remember and recall part one we ensured that you understood that the word submission does not mean inferior it has nothing to do with the notion that um a woman is inferior to a male as a matter of fact we took the position that submission is for every child of god that it is a god characteristic it is a god ethic to be able to practice submission so submission is not for one gender but submission is a christian ethic practiced by all children of god male and female we also demonstrated that the best example of submission was in fact climatically demonstrated in the person of jesus jesus submitted to his father although he was equal to his father so he's equal in substance in which jesus is as much god as god the father yet he voluntarily submitted to the will of his father that he might provide for us eternal salvation so what we extrapolated from that is jesus was submissive while equal which means to use the word submission does not negate that there is an equality it means that there is a voluntary submission there is a voluntary accepting of another function in the form or not in the form but a voluntary accepting of a function in the context of a particular kind of relationship so we have to be mindful that when people hear the word submission sometimes we let the culture give us a bad definition that has nothing to do with what god has said in his holy and divine word so i want you to be mindful this morning that when we're using the word submission we ought not use that as a negative we ought to see that as a privilege to exemplify a quality that was first in christ jesus or climactically uh exemplified in the person of christ jesus so if christ could practice submission then it seems to me that you and i ought to be able to practice submission is is that all right so far right now you should be able to say man you should have no struggles here that so we we've we have lifted the stigmata of the idea that submission means anything about inferiority therefore when we apply it to the role of the woman the woman ought not ever see herself as inferior to a man and a man ought not see his uh see the woman that he's married to or any woman in society as inferior to a male that's not on the table that's not a god definition that's not what that's about that is a constructed convoluted idea created by culture in which this male dominated society has redefined submission to mean something that god never intended for it to mean so we acknowledge that even in biblical times it was a male dominated society and we recognize that submission took on various ideologies and even paul had to correct some of the notions that were taking place in the first century in regards to what submission actually looked like so i want to make sure we're clear about a proper definition of submission i want you to make sure you got in your notes it is a god quality it is a god quality in which one takes the posture to serve another or function in a way that is subordinate in a context of a relationship there are ultimately times when even a man has to submit to a woman it means that he takes on the posture of a servant willing to give her whatever she needs for what she needs it for there are contexts where a woman must be submissive to a male it has nothing to do with inferiority and i want to make sure we eliminate that stigmata now i want to get more specific this morning as we enter into the role of the woman in the public assembly and what that looks like and what the bible teaches in regards to this notion so what i want to make sure we do is dispel some of the myths but at the same time affirm some of the truths and walk through this text in a way that i believe is going to be foundationally helpful the book of first timothy ii timothy and titus we understand them to be what's called pastoral epistles and when we say they are pastoral epistles um there was a name given to these documents in about the 1800s but they are written to evangelists who were sent to local congregational areas that they might set the congregation in order that they might make sure that they were doctrinally sound or doctrinally healthy or their practices were in harmony with the will of god we find where timothy was sent to ephesus and while he was in ephesus the apostle paul said charge some that they teach no other doctrine so the role and the functionality of the man of god was to ensure when he operated within a local context he was to ensure that soundness permeated the congregation he was also responsible within the context of the city of ephesus to establish leadership and so it is true that the leadership qualifications are written to an evangelist so that he would be clear about who qualified for the office of leadership in regards to the local congregation and so first timothy 3 15 gives us an excellent thematic emphasis where he says if i tarry long that you may know how to behave yourself in the house of god which is the pillar and ground of the truth and so we need to be clear that god wants a particular behavior when it comes to the new testament church whether male or female god ordains a behavior there is a way in which we function in the new testament church sometimes we have to function in a way that is counter cultural in other words we don't allow the culture to dictate how god's body is going to function and we got to be careful about always referring to the world for church norms everything in the world doesn't have to become a church norm we need to check with god to make sure he is in harmony with what we're doing in the new testament church now that being the case after paul um gives initial instruction in chapter one chapter two he begins to provide us with an admonition that he wants prayers to be made for all men and that is in first timothy chapter two verse one let's turn our bibles there and just make sure we set up a contextual understanding here first timothy chapter two and verse number one he says first of all i urge that entreaties and prayers petitions and thanksgiving be made on behalf of all men i want you to note that the word men here is anthropos it means humanity so he says i want prayers to be made for humanity stay with me here i'll be where you want me for kings and all who are in authority that's government so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity this is good and acceptable in the sight of god our savior who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth for there is one god and one mediator also between god and men the man christ jesus who gave himself as a ransom for all the testimony given at the proper time for this i was appointed a preacher and an apostle i am telling the truth i am not lying as a teacher of the gentiles in faith and truth now i want you to know what he just did from verse one through seven he says now uh church at ephesus i want you to be mindful i want prayers to be made for the anthropos all men but not just all men for hope in government for those who are rulers for those who are leaders he says because god sent jesus to die for all mankind therefore i want prayers to be made for the anthropos there's a reason i'm putting emphasis on anthropos i want prayers to be made for all humanity and those who are in government i want you to be clear that i want prayers and treaties thanksgivings to be made for all mankind now he says in verse 8 he says therefore do you see that therefore in verse 8 all right he says therefore based on what i just said that i want prayers to be made for all mankind that i want prayers to be made for the anthropos he says in verse 8 therefore i want men wait that's a near different greek word he says i want prayers made for the anthropos but then he says therefore i want the men and near now the word near here means males so he switches from i want prayers made for the anthropos for all humanity to i want definite article the men the males to lead in prayer uh to pray lifting up holy hands without wrath and dissension stay with me here now when he says i want to give a few grammatical things right now what i'm about to tell you is just facts you are not allowed to disagree what i'm about to tell you all right so there's no disagreement here these are facts fact number one i want a near in every place now i know some translations say everywhere uh the better translation is in every place when he uses the greek construction that gives us the english translation every place it is indicative of location which when paul uses this phrase in the new testament he is normally referring to a congregation or an assembly to this end when he says i want prayers to be made by the men in every place he is talking about the assembly he uses this phraseology in other places in scripture first corinthians chapter one one and two that defines the church at corinth at that place it is locative it indicates he's indicating a location now he says i want men in every place ostensibly this is in every assembly to lift up holy hands without wrath and dissension now when you're walking through 1st timothy 2 what's the context brother hey what the context is public prayer in the context of assembly that's the context that we're dealing with what are we talking about the role of the woman in that context how do we understand her role in her functionality well he says first and foremost i want men ania in every place that word men is preceded by a definite article which means the man indicating is not generic but he saw excuse me it's generic for all mankind that is males all males i want you to lead in prayer but don't just read in prayer i need you to do it lifting up holy hands now the word holy is a greek term hacios not hagios you've heard that word before hagios not hagios this is hacios now the the word hastios means that i want you to lift clean hands all right now the word hacios is indicative of the idea that those who lead must lead uh with lives devoted to god so god in this text is not just talking about anybody getting up and praying or any male getting up and praying but if a male gets up and leads in the public our prayer in the public assembly he is to live not just a hagios life but a hostile life that is a life that is clean a life that is pure a life that is devoted to god it doesn't mean sinless but it means a life that is in it some total devoted to the lord now watch what he means by that he says without wrath and dissension in other words now uh uh males when you get up in the church and you pray make sure you got a hacios life and make sure when you pray you do it without wrath and dissension i had a hard time understanding that except to say he made sure he's saying when you get up to pray make sure when you pray you don't pray with an irritated spirit um don't get up and pray and you got in your mind who you praying at i wish i had a church right here that means when you pray make sure your prayer is not aimed uh that is when you pray make sure when you pray you're not doing it with wrath and you're not doing it with disputation do you know you can camouflage your issues in public prayer at somebody sometimes when you're praying you're not even praying for the whole church you want to bring up stuff that's going on in the church because you got a face in your mind i don't i know i don't have no help right here i mean i want to pray uh praise the mighty name of jesus that the lord be with us this morning and that we put away uh we put away gossip and and we need to stop cursing all the time and praise the mighty name of jesus and some people need to live a right life in their household and you know just praying oh lord that people will learn how not to argue and fuss and fight in their house because father we need to do better in our homes and and now that all sounds good but sometimes you praying that because you thinking about somebody y'all not helping me along it here so sometimes you got a motive in your prayer and you want to throw out something that's going on because you want to be messy and convoluted and use god's prayer to do it you're not helping me along in here be careful when you get up make sure you have a hostile life that is make sure when you pray you are not praying with motive you are not praying with anger you are not praying with disputation are y'all following what i'm saying so you got to be mindful when he says uh uh the aneer uh to get up and pray now he every man can't do this because some folk some folk are naturally messy it's just i talk to this side you know you they don't belong on a stage because they want to be messy in a religious way i don't have no help right here uh i praise god you want to be religiously messy it's it's it's unfortunate um but to be religiously messy means i want to aim at somebody while i'm praying i want to talk about somebody's situation while i'm praying and pray and i want to look real pious when i do it god said nah that dude don't need to be praying praise the mighty name of jesus that without wrath and disputation by the way if i can further contextualize this he's talking about those men in the judaistic favor judaistic religion who were still trying to bind the law and they were still struggling with the law and they were disputing with everybody over the law he says them dudes don't need to be praying because they're going to pray with a motive are y'all following that because they got a motive in their mind about what they want done and they already having a lot of disputes in the church over the law and they already got wrath and indignation because paul has taught that you don't have to keep the law in order to be right with god and there's still fellas struggling with that paul said be careful when you pray pray with a hacio's life without wrath and disputation are you following me so far now he indicates i want you to do it um in every place remember that phrase every place is indicative of location we're talking public assembly right now all right so we're talking and i'll prove that even further in just a moment everything in this context is about what's happening in a public way not private all right everything we're about to talk about is what's happening in a public way not private the greek grammar suggests every place every location to which paul is ostensibly dealing with a assembly a public assembly and public prayer but will also show that this is indicative or the idea here is what you're doing in a public context all right now watch this therefore i want the men in every place to pray lifting up hostile's hands without wrath and ascension likewise i want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing modest and discreetly now before i go any further we're talking about the functionality of men in the in the public assembly and paul's dealing with the functionality of women in the public assembly all right stay with me right now you got to say amen because it's all facts he y'all looking real frozen right now stop chill out man we just we walking through the passage right now this this is facts y'all all right with me all right now you cannot be all right with me in about 10 minutes but right now you need to be like yup i got it i got it all right let me make sure the males anea are called to pray in this context in the public assembly i say amen stop playing all right and they are to do it with hacio's hands lifting holy hands now the posture is mentioned but the life is implied now now i know lift holding hands but he's not just talking about posture here he's talking about posture indicative of life lift holy hands now it was normal in the first century might as well hit it while i'm passing that uh that from a jewish into a christian context there was the permissibility of bodily expression in worship just say amen it's right there that to lift holy hands was normal in a palestinian middle eastern context to bow down physically was normal in a palestinian middle eastern context so what we have to understand is when paul is talking about here the men are to lift the males the aneer or to lift holy hands have a hacios kind of life that is without wrath and disputation when you pray don't aim your prayer just pray y'all follow me all right likewise now he switches right look at y'all getting nervous he switches to women now he uses the phrase women without the definite article still indicating uh generically now some people translate this wives i think that's a bad translation in this context because the contrast is between the anir males and the woman is generic so it's not speaking about the husband-wife relationship but the male female functionality in a public assembly context that's what this is now i know why some folk want this to say wise i understand why you wanted to say wise i understand why you wanted near to be husbands because you want the submission to be limited to your house it's okay i'm not saying y'all i'm not saying to women in this church i'm just saying some women i i'm gonna keep going um i know how that works it's it's yeah yeah i need to be submissive at home i get it but but this is public assembly y'all follow me all right likewise i want the women to adorn the word here cosmeto um from which we get an english word cosmetics i want the women to adorn themselves with proper cosmeto clothing all right stay here watch this modestly and discreetly not well let me not even get to the knot yet modestly y'all gonna help me along in here and discreetly y'all stay with me because you think you know where i'm going and you really don't trust me modestly and discreetly clothes are not modest or discreet a person is but what i wear needs to be in harmony with my character come here in whatever culture you're in a woman must be mindful of what she communicates and reference to her character based on clothing worn now i ain't telling nobody what to wear so calm it down i imma let you make your own decision but when you are in public assembly where god is honored and worshiped then part of what paul calls her to do is he says make sure when you come into this public assembly that i manifest my character on the basis of what i wear but a piece of garment is not modest and a piece of clothing is not discreet those are characteristics of a person but what i wear and how i wear it needs to be a manifestation of who i am yeah okay now let me lose half of my senior citizens context you don't even need context let's read not with braided hair and gold and pearls or costly garments in this text and in this context there was a temple called the temple of artemis in ephesus where in ephesus this cultic religious practice that worshiped artemis women were dominant in that religious movement in their dominance in that culture there were women who were no longer embracing the notion or idea of submissiveness began to be dominant based on the artemisin culture come here what they would do was they would often put their status and wealth on display in this context the modesty is not talking about a woman with a short skirt but is talking about the woman who put her wealth on display that was indicative of her trying to prove her status in society and when she would come in she was wearing things that were indicative of her wealth this would probably apply more proverbially to the woman wearing a fur coat and pearls y'all not hear me showing and displaying her wealth now the principle can apply across the board but the context is about a woman in the public assembly who desires to bring attention and display who she is now that's what this is talking about now i know what we do with modesty we've done it for a long time it's a weaponized word and what's funny is it's weaponized by women against women that's the irony of it all is that women will take the modesty text and you bring a ruler trying to measure women's skirts i don't have no help right here uh you want to measure her skirt you want to measure the elasticity of her pants you want to measure all of the aspects of what she wears you want to tell her how much is showing what's not showing because we weaponize modesty to be against the promiscuous and half the time or sometimes in my humble humble opinion it was an older woman who used to be promiscuous who may have worn some stuff back in the day that maybe and now that you have grown past some stuff and you no longer have a need for that you at this place where you want to tell the young ladies how to dress but when you was 30 and 25 and you're not going to help me long in here and the cat suit was out and and you was wearing the afro and praised the mighty name of jesus uh now that you passed it can i can i say and would you mind me saying there's some behaviors you didn't stop you just you you just lived long enough where you outgrew it yeah you're not gonna hear me praise god now i wanted to say i better not say that i'm gonna go back to the text no because i don't want if i stated the text i won't get i won't offend nobody and that's what i'm trying not to do because i don't i don't want to offend anybody but i'm can i just say can we be patient with each other in church and maybe be careful about how quick we judge a thing now i'm not saying don't speak to that i'm saying the way you speak to it you just want to be careful um and do it in a way recognizing there was a time when you struggled there was a time when you wanted to show what you had and and you you wanted to never mind i mean when you young sometimes you you get the feeling yourself and you okay praise god i remember uh i don't know if my mother's watching this or not boy but i went through the i went through the the family album book and i only know my older mama you know i know my mama who outgrew some stuff i know my mama in her 20s and 30s and you know praise god i messed around and got the album book and i was i was i was shocked and dumbfounded i said mama you wore that she was like yeah son i used to have it like hold up like hold up player wait this is a lot for me right now this is is that what i'm saying like that's a short that's that's kind of short right there ma i'm getting mad and it was 40 years ago man you know we have to be patient with people people come from a lot of different contexts in the world and they need time i wish we i wish we were patient enough to let people develop let's stay let's let's at least be contextual modesty is a characteristic write this down the word modest means to have respect or to be reverend in your behavior modesty all right so when we talk about modesty uh and discreetly the word discrete means with restraint restraint is a word that describes historically putting rings on a thing to ensure it doesn't go too far many of the the philosophers of that day would say the way you dress you must put a rain on your lust be sure that when i am in a con a certain context i put a restraint on how i look now in this context is wealthy women wealthy women you don't have to come to church and show everybody your wealth and you don't have to put yourself on displays restrain that because you may be coming into a poverty-stricken assembly and here you are bringing attention to who you are in a context where the rich did not normally come and assemblies were typically poor and here you are putting your wealth on display restrain that you see one of the issues of of submission with where you talk to male or female is sometimes we don't want to put a ring or a chain on our behavior watch this to respect other folk that are around us so watch this this woman paul is saying you're putting your wealth on display but you can't come in here and say well i don't care what people think oh yeah yeah i'm coming for you i'm so coming for you like you just you might as well just get brace and you can be mad later you can't say well well that's them looking ain't nobody asked them to look i'm hurt some folk are already they tripping right now cringey you know because whether you're talking about this woman putting her her wealth on display or whether you're talking about a different kind of display we live in a culture where folk want to say i don't care what nobody thinks that's not my problem listen fix your eyes ain't nobody ask you look this way i'ma be me i'ma do me and when i do me ain't nobody at least listen that's your mind tripping your mind is in the gutter when i put this on i wasn't thinking what you was thinking man we don't even realize how self-centered we are and how we do it and if i have time i know we're talking about the role of the women men got the same issue and this culture wants you as a male to put you on display please don't make me start talking it's not just female clothing that's problematic we now have cut jeans down seven sizes for men and now you are gonna help me now i know you didn't want me to say it but i'ma say it anyway we don't cut his i mean just just all the way up [Applause] all right listen this is so uncomfortable for me because nobody really wants to tell the truth all i'm suggesting is let's not pretend like the display game is one gender it's a cultural thing and the culture is asking us not to care what we do what we wear how we look with the culture says it's about you this woman putting her wealth on display paul says don't do that now what she couldn't say was you know well listen if they ain't got nothing it ain't my fault come here y'all so lucky that clock says two minutes come here likewise i want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing modestly that is with reverence and discreetly not with braided hair that's plated hair gold or pearls or costly garments now stay here with me that was indicative of a woman placing her wealth on display in that culture a woman having plated hair today is not necessarily indicative or indicates he's trying to put a wealth on display in this culture even pearls even gold not necessarily mean that in this culture so you have to interpret this text in light of the principle because culture changes and christians have to be aware of the culture you're in so that you know what you communicate with the clothing you wear it takes a lot of spiritual maturity to say let me be clear and aware of what this culture teaches about a thing so i make sure i'm not manifesting that idea y'all are quiet i get it i get it i know you didn't want me to go this way you wanted me to go a whole another way but i i can't do that because the text doesn't allow me to go another way paul is laying out a principle and the principle is so clear the principle is submissiveness irregardless of the culture because you're trying to display a god characteristic now you don't have to like that and and you don't and i'm not going to get no hand clap for no ladies and i understand that they like is that right yeah that's right listen to it again not with braided hair gold or pearls or costly garments but rather by means of good works paul is saying watch the contrast in greek we call this we we call this a rhetorical discourse analysis in which he makes a counterpoint point he makes the counterpoint not with this but with that not with braided hair gold and costly uh uh garments that's you putting you on display but by good works in other words your real garments need to be what you do your real attractiveness needs to be in regards to the character you put on display through your works your real garment needs that that's your works or to speak for you in the church and not how fine you look and putting your wealth on display what really needs to speak to for your character is how kind you are towards somebody and how what kind of service mentality you have in other words your real adornment needs to be of your character and not just your physicality i'm not getting no help here in other words what really ought to make you attractive is your kingdom drive y'all are not hearing me and oh god if i had time and this is why men can end up in a bad situation because all you looked at was her appearance but you didn't look at her kingdom drive because that has nothing to do with attractiveness in this culture but god would invite you to have a different set of eyes to see who's busy in the kingdom and who loves god and who gives him all his attention and god said that's the kind of ornaments that a woman ought to put on display y'all still don't like it it's no problem and i didn't expect a lot of shouts here uh but rather by means of your good works you can be mute beautiful with a nasty attitude you can have all the display in the pearls and the gold input and put yourself on absolute display all of a sudden but your personality is disgusting four could hardly talk to you when you come in a room you suck the air out of it but rather by means of good works as it's proper for me women making a claim to godliness a woman must well i gotta get to this part man i'm so late ah boy all right that's that's the the garment i'll say more at 11 30 much more than i have time to say right now but but i want you to be very clear about this ornament stuff i wish i had time to go to fresh peter 3 i would get there first speed of three ah turn there just turn that if i don't get to everything i just don't get to it first peter three um i just want to show you the the the ornament analogy is also used by peter that is how a woman adorns herself must be primarily about her character y'all following me primarily about her character and let me not and i don't want to give license here just because the context is talking about women putting their wealth on display doesn't give the notion that a woman can wear anything she wants it doesn't say oh since he's talking about women about wealth that means i can look as promiscuous as i'd like don't walk away saying that's what i'm saying that's not what i'm saying i'm saying the principle is don't put you on display because it's not about putting you on display now that's the principle you follow me now and there's so much i have to say about that because the culture conditions our minds in a lot of ways some you as a as a and i'm not here to tell nobody what to wear believe me that's not what i'm trying to do now i'm gonna tell my daughter what to wear i ain't telling no grown women i mean you're grown but at least know the principle here is the question i'd like you to ask yourself as a christian woman as a christian woman always act so and this is for christian men too it's just not it's just discernments about the role of women ask yourself when i wear that what am i communicating watch this in this culture you you gotta you gotta ask yourself that question now i am fully aware there are some venues where the culture expects you to wear as least as you can all right no one wants to be honest about that that's cool there's some places where i'm supposed to put my sexy on display because the culture and the event you're going requires it and we end up acquiescing to that may i say that you can be sexy and godly there is a way to find balance between now let me give you the proverbial statement how i mean sexy because some of the seniors looked at me like did you just use that word on stage i did proverbially i mean there's nothing wrong with being honest with your femininity there's nothing bad about uh being being confident in my femininity nothing wrong with that and there's a way to do it and be classy not sleazy i don't have no you you can be classy listen i don't know of anybody who did it better than first lady michelle obama i just don't know who did it better than first lady lady listen michelle knew how to be classy and sexy for that matter but there was nothing about her that indicated come get this i don't have no help you don't have to you don't have to agree with that there was nothing about her that said y'all what's up it said i'm fine i'm classy and i got respect for myself there's a way to communicate not just with your garment but with your attitude your attitude reflects you're not gonna help me all of that is part of your aura what do you give off are y'all following what i'm saying no i'm not telling no grown women what to wear but i'm telling you the principal i don't know anybody michelle obama did it well but watch this in some context she couldn't show her shoulders because she had to be willing to adapt to the context that she was in y'all are not hearing it's amazing how how can a secular woman understand this better than a christian christian woman be like you try to take away my freedom no baby i'm trying to make sure that you are adorned also with godliness and you can maintain sexy and finest and all of that and still say there's boundaries how you where and how you display in your attitude how you found that and unfortunately this culture is going another way i just had funny enough just had this discussion with my daughter yesterday when i took her shopping and i'm trying to teach her without me saying yes no yes no yes no i ask her all right try it on and when she puts it on i say all right what is this saying what does it communicate and she's got to tell me what she thinks she's communicating when she has it all because i'm trying to get her to think for herself to have self-respect when daddy ain't present cause i'm not gonna be there all the time to tell you're gonna be grown and after a while when you're growing i gotta let you be you i gotta let you make your own choice but i want you to start thinking early what am i saying when i look like that and do i have to look like that to be fine i don't know why women are getting so one dimensional you can be fine a hundred ways all right let's i'm sorry this is y'all okay man all right all right let's let's go to the next slide uh let me let me get to first peter 3 and i'll be done i think i hope 11 30 takes it better um i don't know what y'all wanted me to do with this it is what it is now let me get to the next one i won't even get to first peter three it's not gonna happen stay in first timothy two all right good let's get down now to verse 12. i will verse 11. a woman must this is public assembly this is how i know it's not private look at what he says in verse 11. a woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness this is not talking about her home this is talking about since he's talking about dress men praying males praying in the public assembly he now says i want a woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness now when you read submissiveness you're not reading that negatively if you heard part one so if you heard part one you're not reading in this i'm inferior in the public worship it's an attitude and disposition that paul is calling women to that were used to the temple of artemis who were becoming extremely dominant and overbearing and they were in a religion that was sensuous and now paul is saying make sure in this public context that you receive instruction now quietly does it mean without speech now i know what some chauvinistic preachers have said who have misunderstood the verse and think quietly means a woman can't talk my god if that means that how she gonna sing she's gotta sing in public worship it does not mean that absolute silence it quietness excuse me the better translation here is quietness which means a humble disposition now i'm gonna prove that in just a minute this is not talking about she got to be absolutely quiet in the assembly no it means quietness which is indicative of a humble disposition receive instruction with a humble disposition with all submissiveness come here watch this contrast first of all but i do not allow a woman to describe teach or exercise authority over a man but to remain in quietness now the idea of the quietness here is a humble disposition to receive instruction while god allows those who were males to be the deduscali in the public assembly that doesn't mean a woman can't teach in no context it means in this one paul is called the male to be the de duskale now what we do is we take that to the classrooms all right that's okay we take it in every other space that context is not talking about every space it is saying in the public assembly the woman is not the deduscale are y'all following that she is not to exercise dominion over the mail yet there are contexts where a woman named priscilla along with her husband corrected apollos which means a woman can be found in doctrine and sound enough to correct a male it is a sad day when men in the church feel like they can't be taught based on gender a woman can't listen how you think timothy knows scripture because he had a mother and a grandmother that was sound in scripture it is not that you can't be told nothing nor does it mean in every context you can't hear a woman give explanation this context oh i'm working hard i gotta i know i gotta close i know audio visual y'all gonna have to forgive me on here this is this requires a bit more surgery i do not allow a woman to teach and this is where women say well paul was a victim of his culture foolishness now we want to demean the authority of an apostle and suggests he's victimized by his culture he's not victimized by his culture by the way this is the same part that says we are all one in christ neither jew nor greek born or free male nor female we are all one in christ jesus but he now sets a expectation for how we respect god and disassembly he says listen i don't allow a woman to dedusculate in this public context or exercise authority over a man to be dominant and i think this exercise authority over the man is in reference to the public teaching is what i believe that is but to remain quiet now i got to do that well i won't have time verse 13 let's just stay in this context paul why are you saying that a woman must not be the de dascale or to exercise dominion over the mail why are you saying that he tells you verse verse 13 for it was adam who was first created and then eve all right now that is what you call a priority argument not priority of importance but chronological creation adam was first formed then eve eve is brought in line as a compliment to adam not an inferior but a compliment she is a help meet not a help slave she's a help me she assists she complements now this is where i get angry at preachers who have the audacity to say well women got to be submissive because because she's sinned it ain't because she's sin she's got to be sinless that's foolishness that's not even paul's argument paul's argument right now is before sin adam first form then e in other words i called men to lead and to function in a leadership capacity with the woman being his compliment man and praise the mighty name of jesus that has nothing to do with intelligence it has nothing to do with who's it who's not who's inferior it has everything to do with how god made the unit to work it's a unit that works together in different functionality that ain't got nothing to do with who's better uh and let me tell you and that's why as a male you've got to be careful about just like we talk about women are being affected by the culture let's not be affected by the chauvinistic culture that gives me the impression that she is my subordinate in the sense of inferior that's not what that is adam first form then eve is just an argument of chronology and then he says and it was the woman found and uh in transgression that's vulnerability two arguments he uses all right now watch this when you looked at the role of women and males a woman should desire for man to lead well if there's anything they get frustrated with well don't say that stay with the text stay with the text you are the desire a strong atom an item that is submissive to god's word so you can trust his leadership but we cannot overlook the experience of women down through history who have had moments when they have experienced abandonment where they had to step into two shoes at the same time that's been an experience watch this but don't let that experience make you generalize every man and walk away saying i don't need one if you're gonna do family dynamics then you got to respect where god plays adam and i need to cherish where god placed eve because there is how it works and what happens in the culture has convoluted our minds i got to stop here the cultures convoluted our minds and has really caused us to miss some important realities all right um i gotta stop so if you're here you may have further questions feel free to email me and i will be happy to further explain what maybe i didn't have time to get to but i don't want women to feel a way about the injunctions of 1st timothy 2 and there's nothing about that text that locks it in culture there's cultural aspects of the text but that's not telling you the text is not relevant it's telling you what's the principle and i got to know whatever con a woman has to know whatever context you go to you've got to learn how to manifest a characteristic of submission as does a man barack obama went to another country and failed to kiss the leader and he was condemned because he did not submit to the culture of where he went everybody has to do that and so you got to be mindful that submission is never a negative word and you got to be mindful of the backdrop of the ephesian culture that's making paul have to even make these statements can i just suggest to you that when you read letters in the new testament they have a context they have a historical background there's a reason why he has to say this to women who were putting their wealth on display there is a situation happening where paul wants them to be clear about humility and if we can do that and respect that in the context of the local church well now let let me tell you what sorry here's what it don't mean it don't mean and i know you're not gonna like this one throw it out anyway because the text is clear and i don't want nobody walking out here say well you didn't cover that this ain't got nothing to do with whether or not a woman could be a woman usher well you can't can well if a woman showing me where to sit isn't she usurping authority no she's not and there's nothing in this text that suggests he's used up an authority because some churches have women ushers that's all right you can be quiet if they was in the aisle showing folk where to sit she's not using authority and nothing in the text that makes that illegal nothing all right y'all ready even if she was handing out the lord's supper now we don't do it like that no more you get it at the door but but back in the day you remember passing the pans even if a woman passed past oh lord these women done got out of line ain't what this text talking about and i must prove it in first corinthians 14. this is in reference this submission is in reference to 2-4 what she manifests on what is displayed and that she does not arrest the public to destroy that's it this ain't got nothing to do with whether she can participate in leading singing nothing nothing in this text precludes that and i was going to give you some verses but i know where i am but don't worry if you don't get it i'm gonna give you some verses that show even in the old testament women participated in leading singing we just forgot those verses were in the bible so if you're here we can't change the bible submission is there what a woman does in the public assembly is there and it's not going anywhere but we don't have to make that mean inferior and we don't have to make that mean somehow some way that god is trying to push a male-dominated church culture that's not what that is and let's not make first timothy two apply everywhere let's leave it in the context it's found and i think we'd be okay let's all stand let's all stand let's all stand now if you got any questions you please email me i'd be happy to answer any questions i have to answer and that's funny because if i'm if i'm hopefully if i'm making enough of y'all mad probably means i'm telling the truth so that's good probably means i'm telling the truth but i want to be clear about this and out and praise god i want nobody chasing down know women about what they wearing in here chill out calm down give people space to grow and be careful about saying something to somebody you ain't got no relationship with because you might get a response you don't like so don't be running up on folk you don't know talking about hey hey hey can i talk to you please based on the sermon this morning about display listen here there's a lot of african-american women in this church don't don't don't all right stop playing like be all right and there's nothing wrong with a woman being beautiful there's nothing wrong with her being feminine it's fine and let's not push too hard for a legal line on what's in a person's closet that's not what i did ain't no legal line here but they are principles that a woman should ask herself if you're here you want prayer i want you to remain standing as we sing the song of invitation y'all would sing holiness yeah yeah that's good holy yeah praise the mighty name of jesus praise the mighty name of jesus [Music] oh thank you jesus [Music] [Music] amen we want to pray now for those who are standing um and we want you to be mindful that if the word of god has touched you in some way and you need prayer we want you to stand and receive that father god in heaven we thank you and we love you thank you for the word father no matter how uncomfortable it may be we've decided as a church male and female to embrace submission we don't view that god as a word that somehow some way bleeds out anything necessarily to inferiority but we are honored to step into the characteristic of jesus and manifest a spirit of humility help us god to have great discernment that in whatever context we're in we're we're careful we're mindful we're not perfect god and we know that and you know that but just help us to think through what we do and how we do what we do father give us wisdom
