Answering YOUR Questions About Disney's New Pay-Per-Ride System

we are gathered here today to celebrate the lives and the deaths of what was formerly known as disney's fastpass and max pass systems we laughed together we cried together i even purchased merchandise with sassy fastpass freezes what on earth am i going to do with might need a fastpass to friday mug now is it gonna be worth big bucks on ebay yet so who's gonna take over the fastpass and max pass thrones now that both systems are out of the picture and we are all seriously gonna have to pay to skip the lines now but we're gonna talk about it today and answer all of your questions [Music] hey everybody it's aj for disney food blog today i'm going to answer all those questions about disney's newest app coming this fall the disney genie recently disney gave an info dump on this app but it's kind of confusing and honestly a bit frustrating for some of you which means i've been getting a whole bunch of questions over here so let's do our best today to answer them first question what is disney genie well disney genie at its most basic form is a free planning service built into the my disney experience app and the disneyland app we did a whole video about it so you can go watch that after this but disney genie plus is an embedded paid service that is optional for you to buy for fifteen dollars per day per person in disney world and twenty dollars per day per person in disneyland you can purchase the disney genie plus which will grant you access to disney's new fastpass service called lightning lanes lightning lane is very similar to disneyland's former max pass system you won't be able to make lightning lane selections until you enter the park but once you do enter you can choose a ride choose a return time and bam you're good to go just keep in mind that you can only make one selection at a time but you will be able to select multiple rides in a single day now there are going to be over 40 disney world attractions and over 15 disneyland attractions available for lightning lane and disney genie plus but some of the more popular rides we call them fancy rides because that's what molly calls them at all ears will not be available for you to choose from such as seven dwarfs mine train at magic kingdom radiator springs racers and california adventure webb slingers a spider-man adventure at california adventure as well star wars rise the resistance and remy's ratatouille adventure at epcot skipping the lines at those fancy rides requires you to pay an individual attraction price the fee for the fancy rides will depend on the ride and the day so expect surge prices when it's crowded now let's move on to your big big big big big questions these are the ones i've gotten multiple times we're going to go into detail first is there any benefit to staying on site well staying on site basically means you're staying in a disney owned hotel and in disney world there is a benefit to staying on site when it comes specifically to individual attraction selections those fancy rides you see just like the regular disney genie plus system you have to make individual attraction selections for those super popular rides the day of your park visit so as soon as the park opens huzzah you can make your individual attraction selection for that oh so coveted ride you're hoping to jump on without waiting hours upon hours to ride it however if you're staying at one of disney's select hotels like the disney owned and operated resorts the walt disney world swan and dolphin hotel the shades of green at walt disney world resort you'll be able to make your first individual attraction selection starting at 7 a.m each day even from your hotel so you don't have to be in the park to do it and as of right now that's the only perk to staying in a disney owned hotel or a select good neighbor hotel when it comes to disney genie plus all right are there discounts for annual passholders well at this time disney's not announced any discounts or special perks for annual pass holders or magic key holders when it comes to genie plus or individual attraction selections that doesn't mean it'll never happen but it means for now disney's just focusing on getting the product out there that being said disney did say they're looking into enhancements for passholders and key holders using disney genie in the future so i'll keep my eyes and ears open for whenever more is dropped about these certain quote enhancements unquote so stay tuned okay do i have to use genie plus every day of my trip well disney just recently announced the answer to this one when disney genie plus is purchased with your ticket or vacation package ahead of your visit disney genie plus must be purchased for the entire length of your stay all of the days in a multi-day visit so you won't be able to just purchase disney genie plus for one of your park days and then not add it to the remainder of your park days if you're booking ahead now just keep in mind that disney genie plus is fifteen dollars per person per day at disney world and 20 per person per day at disneyland so if you're a family of four who's spending four days in disney world the disney genie plus is gonna cost you around an extra 240 on top of what you're already paying not including any fancy rides you might decide to pay for as well but heads up if you don't buy disney genie in advance then you can book it for individual days of your trip so if you wait and just book disney genie plus on the days of your trip you want to use it then you don't have to book it for the entire stay hope that all makes sense okay when can i buy disney genie plus well disney genie plus isn't available yet but after it's launched this fall you'll be able to purchase disney genie plus whenever just as long as you've made your park ticket purchases already they can also be bought on the day of your visit but keep in mind you'll only be able to book genie plus lightning lane selections and individual attraction selections on the day of your visit if you want to only use disney genie plus on a few days of your trip then wait and book it on the day you want to use it remember annual pass holders and magic key holders this section doesn't apply to you you'll only be able to make your genie plus purchases day of unless you're staying at a resort hotel and are booking for the entire length of stay all right what rides are being offered well we don't have a full list of attractions yet that will be available through disney genie plus but disney has noted a few attractions that may be included so far they've name-dropped things like haunted mansion big thunder mountain railroad millennium falcon smugglers run that will be included in the regular 40 rides as mentioned earlier disney's telling us over 40 rides and attractions in disney world and over 15 in disneyland will be available for disney genie plus access not including the individual attraction selections but 40 is a lot and probably includes most of the current fastpass rides the only ones that are going to be excluded are going to be those individual attraction selections the super popular rides now what do the return times look like okay i'm assuming return times will vary by day park ride etc so i can't quite give you more details on that yet but if you want to know what the system itself looks like in terms of how to select a return time here's a quick breakdown when scrolling through the disney gd portion of your app you'll see various rides with their standby line wait time listed and their next available lightning lane time listed so for example let's say haunted mansion's next available lightning lane time is 12 15 pm but buzz lightyear's space ranger spin has a return time for 11 40 am as its next available option you'll select the attraction you want and specify whom from your party you want to include then your selection will be confirmed and when it's your time to ride you'll go through the lightning lane once you enter the lightning lane for that selection you should be able to book another lightning lane choice that's how fastpass worked we will see if that's how lightning lane works as well it's a huge huge time savings if you don't actually have to ride the ride in order to book another attraction if you can just enter the lightning lane and then book another attraction you should be able to get on more rides that way okay can i still use standby absolutely you do not have to have disney genie plus to ride the rides even the ones that will be available for individual attraction selections will still have their usual standby lines and virtual cues for you to use completely for free the disney genie plus and individual attraction selection options are only for those who want to skip any potentially long lines and no it doesn't mean that every standby line in the disney parks is magically going to become a guaranteed weight of over an hour if you do not have the disney genie plus after its launch so disney genie is supposed to help you navigate standby lines and food while the optional disney genie plus is supposed to be more of a guarantee that you'll be able to work around a specific queue line but yeah you can absolutely use standby you don't have to pay for any of this you don't even have to use the free disney genie if you don't want to you can just go to disney world and ride the rides the way that you always have next question does everyone in my party need disney genie plus well from what i'm hearing so far your entire party does not need to buy disney genie plus or individual attraction selections just keep in mind that only the members of your party who do buy one or both of these services will be able to use them so if three out of four members in your party buy genie plus they'll be able to select lightning lane return times throughout the day but the remaining one person who didn't buy it will not be able to go through the lightning lanes however if you have someone in your party who's not a big rider this may come as a relief to you in this case the disney genie plus is not an all or nothing deal and you might be able to save some moolah if someone doesn't want to ride all the rides you just don't have to buy it for them will i be able to book for my whole party at once well so far it appears that you will from what i've seen released by disney so far it looks like you'll be able to select all the members of your party that you want to be included in the lightning lane option during the selection process for individual attraction selections fancy rides disney said you'll be able to purchase an individual attraction selection for multiple people in your party and that counts as one transaction if you want to get a fancy ride after the first one then that will be a separate transaction now how many do you get per day well for disney genie plus disney hasn't said there's a limit so i'm just going to go ahead and assume that's the case until proven otherwise it's a lot like fastpass plus in that way you can only make one disney genie plus lightning lane selection at a time once you've used up that selection you'll be able to make another and then another and another hey if you're spending the money you might as well rack them up if you can right and as far as individual attraction selections go you can only make two of those per person per day so you're going to want to choose very wisely when it comes to your individual attraction selections next question can you pay for individual rides and not disney genie plus yup yup yup once the disney genie launches you'll have a few different options as to how you choose to navigate the rides and their queue lines first option is the standard option if you wanted you could just continue to use standby lines and virtual cues that are included in your regular theme park ticket with no extra charge you should be able to ride all the rides you want just using the standby queues the second option you can pay for just the individual attraction selections the fancy rides for up to two rides per day per person and that's it a third option snag up the disney genie plus and no individual attraction selections or lastly you can pay for genie plus and individual attraction selections the world is your oyster how does this affect disability access service we're getting this question a lot and it's really really important because things are going to change for those of you who need a quick rundown of the disability access service let me try to summarize it in a sentence or two here das offers assistance to guests who have a hard time tolerating extended weights in a regular queue environment due to disability it does not let you immediately access rides but it lets you request a return time for a specific attraction that is comparable to the current standby wait time but now that the new disney genie app is getting ready to launch the disability access service is being enhanced as disney says first off the disney genie is going to introduce two new features to the das program the first is being able to virtually register with a cast member over live video chat as early as 30 days in advance of a park visit while chatting with a cast member you'll be able to select up to two experiences per day subject to availability using the new das advance planning option the advanced selections have to be booked at least two days before the day you plan to use them so don't try to wait until the last minute and make those selections the day of your visit if the attraction you want is available you will have a one hour return window to redeem during the day of your visit the second new feature allows you to virtually select dis return times for attractions instead of having to physically go to an experience or a kiosk to get a return time from a cast member guests registered in the dis program and their party members can make return time selections right in the my disney experience app during the day of your park visit so two pre-booked attractions and then you'll be able to make more attraction selections during the day that you're there okay can you use disney genie plus for the same ride multiple times well disney hasn't said one way or another if you'll be able to select the same ride multiple times based on what i'm hearing you can make that lightning lane selection one at a time throughout the day for the attractions of your choice so you can even make them for other parks if you have a park hopper ticket so who knows maybe you'll be able to make multiple dumbo the flying elephant reservations in one day if you're kiddo's into that i'm not sure why i jumped to dumbo it just seemed like a funny option to throw out there but i have used fastpass plus to ride goofy's barnstormer like 25 times with my kid in the past so if you're in that boat parents be prepared now as far as individual attraction selections or fancy rides go disney has said that guests will be able to schedule a time to arrive at up to two highly demanded attractions each day so i'm assuming this means you can only purchase an individual attraction selection for a particular ride once any given day meaning you probably can't buy two individual attraction selections and make them both for remy's ratatouille adventure on the same day but who knows disney might say otherwise and i'll let you know if they do next question what's the deal with photopass now i feel like i'm about to do stand-up comedy here what is the deal with photopass right disney genie plus includes special additional photo features at disney world it includes augmented reality frames to use for your photos and you may have already seen them pop up on your snapchat for a little while there while disney was testing them out but at disneyland it does include unlimited photopass downloads for the day of your visit just like how max pass used to work will it be available during extended park hours sorry charlie if you'll be enjoying early entry or extended evening hours when those perks begin later this year for hotel guests you'll only have access to the ride's traditional standby queues that being said early entry and extended evening hours are usually beneficial for guests because of their lower wait times so having disney genie plus access on top of the early and extended hours would be like giving a discount to an item that's already been put on clearance okay will you pay for disney genie plus now it's the moment of truth are you gonna purchase disney genie plus when it launches well recently i posted a poll on the dfb instagram stories asking all you lovely people if you were gonna invest in this service once it's available to the public and you were really pretty split 53 of you voted no this came out to 7468 votes while 47 percent of you voted yes 6569 votes the nose had it but just barely and we've gotten a lot of pro and con opinions about disney genie one reader told me they begrudgingly voted yes this reader said they're planning their first trip in the parks it's a big one they probably won't go back for several years so they feel like they have to pay for disney genie plus to make the most out of their trip and not get stuck in lengthy standby lines and one reader sort of echoed that statement saying they'll pay for disney genie plus but they won't be happy about it and other readers were on the fence one said they needed that list of the over 40 rides that will be included with disney genie plus to decide another reader said that all the extras disney is charging for is giving them a very negative feel for disney despite their family's love for the brand so whether you love it or hate it the disney genie app is on the horizon and will be here to stay probably if you're planning an upcoming disney trip and the app is available for you go ahead and download it to check it out for yourself like i mentioned in this video disney genie in its most basic form is free to use so it's not going to cost you anything to at least browse all the different
