this is one small step for dfb and one giant leap for dfb kind yeah no yeah neil armstrong did it better but you know what i'm getting at it's time to blast off into a dining experience we've been waiting eons for or at least since 2017 when it was first announced it's the one the only space 220. what in the world am i going to talk about from now on [Music] everybody it's aj for disney food blog today i'm going to talk about space 220 and all its intergalactic glory space 220 officially open to hungry space travelers on september 20th it's a restaurant in epcot but the question is was the wait years and price tag lots worth a meal amongst the stars let's check out this out of the world experience together all right space 220 is located in epcot's future world section of the park fitting right if you make your way over to mission space which i'd recommend you ride before you fill yourself up on space 220 food instead of after for obvious spinning reasons you can't miss it just head on over to the giant orange to red ombre planet and you'll be there from september 20th to the 26th the restaurant is only available for walk-ins only so the crowds were hectic on opening day with guests trying to snag a first-come first-served table for those of you who are planning to dine here in the future reservations will be available after the 26th reservations are now available to book for dates starting the 27th you can make an advance dining reservation now for any time after september 27th for any time on or after september 27th as long as reservations are still available right now they're slim pickings reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance as is the case with all the restaurants in disney world at the moment and you will need valid epcot park admission and a park pass reservation in order to dine here and note if epcot is not your first park pass reservation that date you can of course hop over here if you have a park hopper ticket okay let's talk atmosphere get it yeah that was a funny joke okay space 220 is run by the patina restaurant group they are also responsible for dining experiences like maury middle asia enzo's hideaway the edison they also run all of the restaurants in the italy pavilion in epcot and they run several restaurants over in disneyland as well as a bunch in other cities around the world and they are a restaurant group that takes their restaurant theming pretty seriously before the dining adventure begins you'll check into the space 220 departure lounge where you'll be handed a boarding pass now this boarding pass is not like the rest of the resistance boarding passes but it is still super important because it'll be your ticket into not only the restaurant itself but into one of the most thrilling parts of this experience the space elevator ride when it's your group's turn to board you'll step onto the space elevator so where's this taking you well up up and away into the centauri space station exactly 220 miles above epcot hence the 220 name think haunted mansion elevator so you're not going into a stretching room per se but you're going into a circular room that gives you the sensation of being lifted out of future world and on into space if you look down through the viewport in the center of the space elevator you'll be able to watch epcot getting smaller and smaller whereas if you look up you'll see the space station getting closer and closer once you've reached your galactic destination you'll first walk through a tunnel of space lettuce because why wouldn't you before entering the main dining area this dining room is big expansive enormous humongous okay it really does feel like you've been lifted up into space especially when you check out those out of this world panoramic views of the galaxy through the simulated animated window views all around the dining room now keep your eyes open because these space views will keep you on your toes with different things that might float past your line of vision time and again there are different table elevations depending on where you're sitting and the tables that are further away from the space station windows are on a more elevated platform so you kind of got stadium seating here a lot like coral reef restaurant now that's nice because it gives everyone the chance to continue watching the incredible views of space throughout their meal no matter where you may be seated the tables chairs and bar are all very sleek shiny and silver now the lounge area works as a first come first serve situation like at california grill you're never going to need a reservation for the lounge nor will you be able to make one so it's a solid alternative if you don't have a reservation for space 220 while you're at epcot but you still want to experience the atmosphere of the restaurant that being said the demand for this lounge is probably going to be pretty high so try to arrive earlier rather than later cast members attire blends in with the modern space vibes as well nothing over the top just standard navy and professional attire all right let's talk specialties space 220 serves up a decent selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages which i'm going to talk about in just a second but something unique that space 220 does is provide exclusive trading cards for anyone who's ordering zero proof aka non-alcoholic cocktails or kids meals also for an extra three dollars kids can get their drink in a souvenir sipper that's shaped like a rocket ship super super fun the sipper can also be free with the purchase of a zero proof cocktail just like the trading cards now the atmosphere might be out of this world and you may get some trading cards but what about the food according to the disney website space 220 has a menu with quote modern and upscale dining choices the restaurant features a multi-course pre-fix menu for lunch and dinner this is very very important y'all pre-fix menu for lunch and dinner that means you're not going in and choosing a la cart like you can't just go in and have dessert you can't just go in and have appetizers unless you choose to dine over in the lounge and just choose from the lounge menu if you go to space 220 for lunch expect to pay a starting price of 55 per adult and for dinner expect to pay a starting price of 79 per adult both lunch and dinner prices for the kiddos 9 and under will be a starting price of 29 per kid i say starting price because there are a handful of different add-ons you can choose from like the space station specialties extra sides fun themed cocktails upgraded souvenir sippers those will bump up those prices if you choose to add them to your meal now if you're there for lunch you'll have two courses a lift off appetizer and a star course entree and for dinner you will have a liftoff star course and a supernova dessert so lunch two courses dinner three courses for the lift-offs or appetizers there are seven options to choose from the starry calamari yes this is this is what we're doing comes with two different sauces it's the spicy marinara and the roasted pepper citrus aioli but of the two the aioli is the star here the calamari isn't overly greasy just lightly fried and adding fried red peppers were a nice added touch the big bang burrata yep yep still doing it is a big chunk of cheese and honestly can i really complain about a big chunk of cheese the burrata could probably benefit from having some sort of cracker or bread offering along with it but it still has a nice flavor overall now i had my doubts when it came to the space greens but they're actually a solid option here the dressing is a surprising bite to it very acidic and peppery and the bib lettuce was really quite attractive now another one that i was suspicious about was the blue moon cauliflower but that actually might be the best option on the lift off list the blue moon cauliflower is made with a homemade buffalo sauce freeze-dried blue cheese crumbles what and tempura fried cauliflower which was delicious however if you're not a blue cheese fan or a buffalo fan you might want to go a different route on this one or heck if you're not a cauliflower fan right now the neptune tartare is buttery and rich with a complicated assortment of flavors that are definitely meant for more adventurous eaters while the centauri caesar salad is just your everyday caesar nothing to write home about but a good option if you're looking for something simple probably the weakest link of these appetizers is the galaxy green salad the mix of ingredients beets mushrooms cashews and hummus each have a good flavor individually but didn't work for us when combined there are seven star course options to choose from as well these are your entrees for lunch the flat iron steak has a nice juicy flavor thanks to the wine sauce and the green beans on the side are good but definitely the least exciting option on the plate the potatoes on the other hand are stellar no pun intended yes it was they're crispy on the outside tender on the inside and just all around buttery and flavorful they're essentially like really fun french fries now the blue house salmon looks pretty and tastes pretty with its smoky flavors the mushrooms on the side are nice and tender and they actually go really nicely with the steak if you want to cross-contaminate your main courses now the other side the cooked carrots are cooked well and aren't mushy but don't expect them to have a crunch and the bok choy is it's bok choy if you like bok choy then it's a nice addition to this dish the roasted free-range chicken is a fairly standard chicken-based entree that felt like something you'd eat around thanksgiving or christmas but the sides are excellent and it's still a decent option if you're not feeling too terribly adventurous kind of ho-hum getting the feeling here it's a little boring okay good both of the pasta dishes the tara bolognese and the baked macaroni are honestly pretty forgettable they weren't bad but dulled in comparison to the other available options if you're looking for a great pasta dish on property you'll probably have a better experience over at via napoli at epcot's italy pavilion also run by patina group why can't they get it better over here i don't know but the seared tuna is probably the victor among the main course dishes at least this time around it featured a lot of ingredients like avocado marinated egg brown rice edamame pineapple and radishes the egg is soaked in soy sauce giving it such a unique flavor but really all the flavors play nicely together here the radishes are cooked well and the edamame is a nice addition to an all-around fresh tasting meal now let's pop into dinner the lift off options for lunch and dinner are the same meaning the appetizers are the same there are exclusive dinner star course offerings entrees for instance the slow rotation short rib falls off the bone they could use a little more sauce but the bed of cheddar grits complement the ribs very very nicely the florida red snapper is the fanciest fish entree this side of the galaxy the tapenade has a nice citrus situation and the tomato broth brings everything together so if you're looking for a fancy table service seafood option i'd recommend the snapper here over the options at coral reef restaurant located next to the seas with nemo and friends if you're wanting duck they've got duck in space too the x2 duck has a super crispy skin complemented by the squash flan side note if you're not big on textures the flan might not be a great option for you and disney has a lot of great filet options on property and the eight ounce filet mignon at space 220 is now allowed to join that club too oh my goodness guys this steak melts in your mouth and the cabernet butter is perfect the filet is going to be the best bang for your buck here if you're a state connoisseur but if you're just looking for a really good steak and you don't care much about paying extra for the spacey atmosphere you can always dine at la celie instead because they are the king of steaks my friends however if you do want those space station vibes this might be the right option for you and of course there's tons of other steak places around disney world yasmin steakhouse stk lots of places to get steak throughout property but in epcot really your best bets are going to be here and over there at la celier of course now you also have the option of adding satellite sides to your dishes one of those sides is an extra 10 bucks it's the brussels sprouts which are very tender and buttery and they're sauteed with a slight sweetness to them so if you want to drop 10 bucks on brussels sprouts in disney world there you go now if you're not vibing with any of the star course options you can pay extra for the space station supplemental options there's only one station supplemental option for lunch that's the galactic lobster globe the globe has the best representation of the main courses and provides a lot of lobster that being said the upcharge for this an extra 18 bucks on top of your prefix price might not be quite worth it unless you really really love lobster and you want a lot of it and for dinner you can choose between two supplemental options if either tickles your fancy option number one is a one and a half pound baked whole lobster stuffed with jumbo crab and the lobster comes with a hearty pour of garlicky butter that soaks into that meat option number two is the 24 ounce bone in rib eye the rib eye has an amazing char it's a fatty cut of meat as all rib eyes are but if that's something you love like i do then you're definitely going to get a lot of it this is a huge portion so expect to have leftovers and of course let's not forget about the drinks you've got your choice of two categories the atmospheric spirits which are alcoholic and the zero-proof cocktails non-alcoholic when it comes to atmospheric experience you've got options like the atmos spritz which is really sweet but that might be because the fun cotton candy cloud that they pour it all over and if you're looking for more of a pina colada-like spirit the planetary punch might be more up your alley just don't be fooled by its purple appearance it tastes very tropical thanks to the coconut flavoring and sweet rum and its presentation is also a lot of fun complete with lots of fizzing bubbles now if you need your blue curacao fix that's what this one's for the jupiter fizz is very orange like vibrant orange and it tastes like a refreshing blend of mango and grapefruit the red star however has more of an alcohol taste to it thanks to the jameson but that wasn't a necessarily bad thing in fact it's still pretty fruity and light continuing on with the red drinks you can also grab yourself a celestial cosmopolitan which is just your average cosmo with a subtle floral aftertaste thanks to the hibiscus and then there's the stargarita which has a super fun name in my opinion and it's just a really fruity margarita okay when i say really fruity i don't mean it's too much it's really the perfect mix of being not too strong not too sweet there's no salt on the rim for this mark but you do get a lime wedge on the side and the drink changes colors okay moving on to the zero proof cocktails the moon rocks is bound to be kiddo approved because it comes with a side of pop rocks okay it's also adult approved because pop rocks just make beverages rad and the drink itself tastes like a sweeter version of sprite if you can believe it but pouring pop rocks on top makes it a party the milky way is a coffee based drink so not another kiddo drink unless you want them bouncing off the resort walls all night long it's good but there are other more fun mocktails you can try here save the iced coffee beverages for joffrey's later in the day or the next morning the lightyear lemonade gives off similar vibes to the milky way it tastes like a good lemonade but if you want a more fun experience order something like the moon rocks instead now if you choose to sit in the lounge it has its own array of separate priced options called flight bites this is basically the lounge menu for 18 you can order the chicken on waffles which apparently is totally a thing they have in space now i mean they're able to grow lettuce here so why not have chicken and waffles too the chicken has a nice breading it didn't take away from the meat and this dish is overall super syrupy so was it a huge hit not really but it's fine i mean it's good there's a lot of syrup going on the new england lobster roll has big chunks of lobster in a toasted bun the mayonnaise is pretty citrusy and also comes with a lemon wedge on the side short rib sliders are covered in cheddar cheese and have big chunks of meat top of pickles lettuce and tomato all within a super buttery roll that is so soft we could nap in it and the astro deviled eggs are super vinegary but the candied bacon helps cut the tartness and now it's time to wrap up your meal with a supernova sweet the sticky toffee pudding cake has a super thick sauce covering the cake that looks a lot like molasses it's good but it's not too terribly big so if you want to try it order it when it's included with your meal at dinner instead of paying an extra 14 bucks for it at lunch the gelato and sorbet options have a variety of flavors you can choose from chocolate vanilla strawberry or mango the strawberry one tastes like pretty standard sorbet but it's a nice light option after a heavy meal chocolate cheesecake is pretty to look at and has a rich chocolatey flavor it's light and airy and still provides a good option but back to the fruity flavors again the lemon mousse is very lemony great job me five star review right there it's tart but not overly sour and it's a beautiful presentation it's one of the best things about these dessert options they're very very pretty now the texture base is gooey which is honestly a bit disappointing the dessert would benefit from nice crunchy texture amidst all the soft textures and then there's the carrot cake which is a plant-based dessert and i'm getting mixed reviews on it really some people have been super disappointed with it some people have enjoyed it our reviewers thought it was good so i've had plant-based carrot cakes before and not been happy with them because i am a hardcore carrot cake fan so it's really up to what your expectations are on this one for kiddos lunch and dinner prefix options are going to look the same they'll be able to choose a star course a supernova suite and one celestial beverage kiddo star course options include things like space getty cosmic chicken mission macaroni galactic salmon and smashed burger oh and let's not forget those trading cards kids get those with their kids meal too remember kids meals are only available for children nine and under but anyone can get the trading cards with a purchase of a zero proof cocktail now is it worth it well space 220 is a lot of fun it's immersive massive makes me want to return immediately just for the atmosphere alone but you've got to pay a hefty price for those views the dinner price tag is a bit of sticker shock but the food quality was decent so it made the increase a little easier to swallow when it came to the fixed lunch prices however the 55 bucks per person price isn't too terribly different from other signature dining restaurants on property like cinderella's royal table or be our guest restaurant over in magic kingdom so is it worth it well i'd say yes for the extensive theming but it helps that there are several items on this menu that are memorable this is a great option for those who are looking for something unique to do at disney world and it's a good option for both adventurous and picky eaters alike plus kiddos and adults are both gonna have a good time here there are plenty of fun drinks add-ons and experiences for the kids to make life-lasting memories however keep in mind that it's really easy to rack up the bill here past that 55 and 79 base price especially if you're interested in trying out several of the themed cocktails or are wanting to partake in a space station specialty if you're wanting to try some out of this world food without the budget breaking price tag you can always check out cetuli canteen over in the pandora section of disney's animal kingdom you can also try docking bay 7 at disney's hollywood studios and star wars galaxy's edge they've got space food both counter service locations serve food with unique twists and appearances meant to simulate and otherworldly dining experience also remember it's gonna be really hard to get a reservation here at space 220 for a while so that's going to mean a you know a 5 a.m wake-up call 60 days ahead to get that reservation to nail that down so speaking of reservations if you're not sure about space 220 if you don't know if you want to drop that kind of money on a prefix meal that it's going to be really really hard to get a reservation for then try an evening in the lounge a drink and a small bite from the lounge could help you decide if you're ready to splurge on a full dinner or if a taste of the atmosphere was enough for you so remember you can go up to the lounge it's first come first served so we would probably recommend heading up there to the lounge as soon as the restaurant opens so kind of that late morning noonish time frame that's going to be when you want to try to get up there to the lounge or maybe around 3 p.m right when lunch is starting to taper off and dinner's starting up that might be a good time to head up to the lounge and trying that out first and seeing if it makes sense to book a full meal at space 220 is probably our biggest recommendation if you're on the fence now all in all this restaurant is a welcome addition for us to the first part of future worlds reimagining but keep checking back here you know we're going to keep going back to space 220 when we can get reservations we're going to keep trying different menu items and we're going to keep you updated on the quality control i hope this has been helpful we've been waiting for this restaurant for such a long time so thank you so much for following along with us for listening and for watching as always this is aj for disney food blog and we'll see you real soon you
