just watch smallant's video and see if he can actually beat pokemon platinum without taking any damage i really think this is going to excite me and really make me want to do a challenge like this but let's see really quickly vivid from the future here i was correct this video has inspired me i want to do a challenge like this if you haven't already please go watch the original video it'll be linked in the description down below just go check out smallant i think this video was incredible it's an inspiration it makes you think about playing pokemon in a completely different way i want to do this so every wednesday and saturday here right here on youtube we are going to be streaming pokemon crystal without taking a single point of damage we'll be starting at 5 p.m pacific which is about 8 p.m eastern or hearing about those times at least let me know if you're excited for this we have a brand new stream series it'll be dropping november 4th this video from smalling really just is amazing i think he's kind of reinventing how people play pokemon he's kind of reinvigorating the pokemon let's play scene for content creation and i'm thoroughly impressed and i'm actually really excited uh if you are too let me know in the comment section down below okay now actually on to the video all right so i'm here in the video i have a quick question if you've done any challenges in pokemon be it a nuzlocke or some other challenge run what is the hardest challenge you've ever done or what challenges have you failed because they were too hard i would like you to answer that in the comment section down below another thing is do you like the webcam board or vertical like this where you get a closer up shot of my face just answer those questions for me in the comments down below but let's let's react pokemon platinum came out in 2008 i played a ton of it as a kid pokemon platinum actually came out as i was exiting high school so i have very fond memories of this generation i think it's one of the first generations like not just platinum but gen 4 in general is one of the first games i took seriously i should have said that before pressing play sorry four is probably the one i put the most hours into yeah i wanted to replay it recently for nostalgia you know but it's pokemon if you've played it once there really isn't much reason to play through again i this is not the kind of person i am i feel like i would always want to play through pokemon again also professor rowan is hilarious just a quick aside so i made it a bit more interesting i try to beat pokemon platinum without ever having my pokemon take any damage hearing that sentence out loud is kind of absurd uh it's just you know a part of the game you know your pokemon are going to get attacked this is i have a feeling this challenge run is going to be absolutely insane uh but on top of that most people that want to add a challenge play nuzlocke rules this is like mega death nuzlocke you get touched you're dead like not just the pokemon you okay here's how it went i named myself ant and the rival was the man of course and walked over to get my first pokemon from rowan i chose piplup it starts with pound instead of tackle which is great because it has a hundred percent accuracy instead of the smartest and accuracy that tackle has in this genre that makes sense then the man wanted to fight just keep using withdrawal please oh so you immediately reset that's absurd did he save before he picked the starter or does he go from from fresh all right yep took damage had to reset to not take damage fighting it needs to withdraw six times in a row and then there's two tackles barring a crit from piplup the chance of this happening are around four percent so i threw myself the battle oh that's a lot of resets oh that's a lot of resets over and over for half an hour until i quit well with piplup at least i thought about it a bit harder and it turns out tertwick was the right choice okay putting it against the gym it knows leer instead of withdraw as it's non-attacking move this means it won't make our attacks weaker each turn charlie ring four times in a row which is a one in 16 chance much better oh okay one in 16 that's infinitely better than whatever point zero zero four zero zero zero four i don't know that's infinitely better okay tert wig number and on the third attempt with turtwig i lucked out and it happened third attempt no damage driving okay again blue again very cool we're through we've done it after 40 minutes i was finally able to get this oh my god get some pokeballs and then we're free to have some fun imagine right up to the next route battle the first trainer who has this yeah you just take damage attack oh boy okay it's time to start solving problems what can you do to not get hit by a starly that has a move that will always hit before you well turtwig literally can't he learns no priority moves okay i had to catch my own starly here's how that went let's do it what happens if it breaks out and hits you do you reset oh no thank you okay okay one two three yes first try i go if you fail the encounter i guess he restarts and does the starter battle all over again that's oh my goodness the stakes are so high already the the beginning battle like the beginning starter like the starter battle seems like one of the hardest parts of the game because you're just completely rng you can't prep for it it happens at level five you can't over level for it oh my goodness got lucky and caught at first try then i accidentally pressed the power button which took like an hour anyways with the starly and the party i had to train it up until it could one hit ko the opponent stalli with its own quick attack a quick attack ko is guaranteed when starly evolves and gets level 19. so i had to do some grinding grinding in this challenge isn't like normal pokemon like how do you even grind to guarantee you never take damage you need to also one hit ko every wild pokemon unfortunately the only attacking moves that tertwig and starley know are tackle and if i use those there's a five percent chance they miss each time that's when the 95 accuracy really comes to bite you you miss one attack even if it would have ocoed you could have to reset okay i i really understand the gravity of the situation this is this is tough i think what he's doing right now is uh if i if i'm remembering correctly there are cricket tots on this route i played a lot of gen four i believe krikatot's on the route and maybe i don't know if it only comes out during night time or if it's just like really low spawn chances i don't remember but i think krikatot uh and gen four or maybe even now i don't know who's used to krika taught since gin for the only lions bide uh at this point so hi getting to level 19 with starly i'll be using enough tackles that i'm essentially guaranteeing yeah exactly at least once so i needed to find an alternative to training against wild badoofs and starlys the solution was found at night turns out yeah he's he's finding cricket at night there's a 10 percent chance for a cricket talk to appear and at this level the little person will only have bide and growl bride takes two turns to deal damage so as long as my pokemon can defeat the cricket tots in two turns we're good to grind but of course starlight can't do it in two turns but tertwig can so i had to train kirkway until he was able to watch out then i could switch train starly until it could fight them during this grinding the chad and i decided to make full rules for the challenge we decided that after each badge i was able to save and if i had okay that's that's huge actually being able to save after each badge one i think this challenge is already hard enough if you had to reset from scratch every time i just don't think you would ever finish i don't think so i think saving at each badge is a really good sort of checkpoint system i like that okay you're already doing a lot saving at each badge that's that's like bare minimum i'd want to save after each capture each encounter or something i don't know happened to take damage i could reset the game back up to the previous gym i felt this stays true the challenge because it's really about strategizing about how to make progress rather than wasting my life away doing mindless grinding for hours as you'll see i still wasted a rather oh no oh and another thing for mindless grinding i sped up the game because again i'm not trying to waste my life fighting crickets for 30 hours after exterminating the entire cricket population my starlight evolved and grew to level 19. i was ready for the first house youngster tristan with quick attack took nine in-game hours to defeat the first trainer this is gonna be a long one okay so it's sped up so it's not actually nine hours of play time he has a counter going right oh but he's been he's been playing for five hours he's been playing for five hours nine in-game hours five irl hours that's five hours to beat the second trainer in the game oh my i love this this sounds incredible in addition to staravia i had to train up tertwig all the way to level 25 in this route to evolve and learn mega first somewhat okay grass move with a hundred percent he's evolving from here i was able to move up to jupiter life i crushed the man with saravia and ran over towards orbra and accidentally ran into this train ran into a guy oh it's got a oco okay yes it occurred oh my god ah those moments are so tense i had a one-fifth chance to not ko by the way i really could not afford to make any more mistakes like that with that over i carefully navigated the router concave to enter dodge the trainers make sense i did the calculations and my level 25 grottle should just barely be able to take out roark with mega drains go wrong baby he's really rolling the dice here because like the way pokemon damage is calculated like there's no way he knows his grottles like evs and ivs so if he's saying he barely has enough power to one-shot it like this could be a roll it could not be a roll he could whiff on the roll every time that's brave very brave brave ant yeah geodude's gonna get one shot by like good same for this one hit ko this is the one this is the tough one because this one's not four x weeks of grass oh no yes okay oh thank god oh my goodness it's so stressful the first gym was done i made my first save point and was ready to move on to fluoro 19 in-game hours discovery that made this challenge a lot more difficult team-up battles in these battles i completely forgot about like this isn't just a double battle you team up with someone else in the game and the ai is notoriously bad eventually he's gonna beat uh or not beat but he's gonna go through a forest to get to the second gym and he's gonna have to team up with cheryl and cheryl is really bad she's really bad okay okay this is uh you're forced to team up with someone else and the people who you're teamed up with kinda suck yeah they're awful first required team battle is with dawn against two galactic grunts these grunts have a glamio and a stunky the only option is to quick attack to out speed the glammy out quick attack is not speed fake out has unless fake out is a different priority in gen 4 which i if i if it is i just don't know as priority moves in this game all have the same level of priority okay didn't have to pause no matter what i do it's essentially a 50 50 chance of getting a hit so i quick attacked the glam male which i miscalculated and it didn't even take it out but the glamio and stunky both attacked the piplup enabling me to finish this battle first try easy game easy life after that battle it was clear my pokemon needed to be stronger so i trained up grottle until level 32. so it evolved then went to flo aromatown valley works was next and inside was commander mars her ace is the level this per ugly is like notorious for standard nuzlocke so i can imagine that it's going to be pretty tough to get through in this challenge i mean obviously he's leveled really high he has uh he has a torterra already that's insane uh but yeah this battle is like kind of notorious and standardized like so well 17 you have to be prepped for it to out speed and one hit ko the perogly with quick attack meister avia needed to evolve and then get to level 40. i only had the first batch oh my god wild pokemon until i took damage because i'm dumb and that team up battle that i did first try earlier took three for tries two and a half hours until staraptor was finally a level 40 and i could defeat a level 17 per ugly after saving value i was able to move up into eternal forest and oh god it's more team up this is the tough one you are forced to team up with cheryl the first required battle in eterna forest is against jack and brianna brianna has a pacharisu with quick attack there is a lot of early priority in this game that is really atrocious for this challenge i know he picked this because he's nostalgic about the game in the generation i wonder if there was any like thought about all the early priority in this game when he went into choosing it because that is this is tough that's tough though i went into it hoping for the best oh no so i went all the way back to the first gym i did three hours of grinding this time catching up a doof for hms and finding a diseased weasel oh he got a shiny you got a full head shiny this is one in 8 100 something uh he's gotta knock it out too that's so sad catch it it's a good pokemon oh look at his face look at his face oh he knocked him out i put it out of its misery of course oh no i tried the fight again poor weasel okay killing the patrice first checks out string shot poco sucks strength let's go yes imagine being that excited all right finally we're good now oh my god and i succeeded i beat the first required battle of the forest that's insane keyword first fortunately though the other battles i was able to force into single battles oh i think they weren't the problem and i was able to cast aside the blight of cheryl eterna city is the location of the grass gym and because i had a level 40 stir after i completely blew it away with a ring attack the second badge was mine just a level 40s to raptor this gyms ace is 20 something it's grass types like you didn't just blow them back you put them six feet under oh my goodness that's it's good though progress 33 and a half in-game hours not including the time spent 13 33 in game hours but that sped up 13 in real life hours two badges absurd after the gym i went back and got a weasel for later 75 chance please one oh he's catching weasel i wish he had weasel i wish he had the shiny one big paws let's go easily cleared out the galactic base grabbed a bike and the explorer kit i cautiously traveled through to heart home with a few uneventful battles along the way the next big hurdle was badge three from fantina the ghost gym leader fantina has a stuff skull with shadow steam priority move then a haunter with sucker punch also a priority move the dusk hole was simple to deal with because shadow sneak couldn't hit my start but the hunter was trouble sucker punch was able to hit my strap okay so he got the weasel so he could level it up and get aquajet i see sure and quick attack couldn't hit the haunter so in order to beat the haunter i needed to train my weasel to level 45 so it evolved and had the stats to defeat the hunter with a single aquajet the final pokemon miss magius was a simple crunch and the third badge was mine after 46 in game hours 16. the third badge of the bags this was where the challenge changed i grabbed a gift evie but the man who gave me some incredible advice make sure all your attacks hit avoid every enemy attack that's so funny it's like so on the nose to what he's doing in this game because if he misses an attack and gets hit he resets if he just doesn't avoid enemy attacks and gets hit he resets that's perfect that's the stretch that's all you gotta do that's so funny and walked into silesian town confident as ever so lacey in town has the pokemon daycare the daycare is what turned this challenge from a boring grindy mess into a fun part okay if you deposit pokemon in the daycare every step you take your pokemon gains one experience level all i had to do to get level 100 pokemon was to shove him in the daycare and bike up and down over and over until i traveled around one million tiles and that's what i did i threw steraptor and floatzel into the daycare and off stream up and down for 30 in-game hours eight hours with the speed up the next stream i was ready to crush this game or so i thought i picked up my incredibly powerful level 100 pokemon swept through route 215 until i encountered a very unexpected problem ace trainer dennis okay he was an unavoidable trainer who had a drift blimp drift blims have aftermath right aftermath does damage if you kill it with a physical attack so you have to hit it with a special attack question mark the ability aftermath where on the turn the pokemon is defeated if the opposing pokemon made contact okay not even just physical if you made contact it does damage i think there's some special attacks that make contact it takes damage this was a problem my two level 100s only had moves that made contact we scoured the game and strategized the best we could and the best solution to the problem barring extra hours and hours of grinding was getting rocked and teaching it to float four rock tunes base accuracy is like what it's 90 80. it's not it's not perfect rock tomb only has eighty percent accuracy there's a one in five chance that i would take damage oh he's gonna miss a one in five chance i would have to spend eight more hours of my life biking up and down no don't battle don't miss he's gonna hit the mistake the mistake that cost you eight hours baby uh i should have probably just done some extra grinding on my torterra instead but i reset and since i'm stubborn i just tried the rock tomb strategy [Music] i'm crossing my fingers please don't miss again that's so much time of your life 25 in-game hours or not irl hours okay it connected feels good oh it doesn't happen twice let's go that's that was a fun way to terrifying with that fight complete i moved on to the fourth gem swept the whole thing easily and saved the game okay 73 hours in next up was doing a quick battle against some galactic grunts with dawn the grunts opened with two zubats so i can't earthquake them with torterra i was a bit red you really have to like i feel like at some point you had to get like multi-hit attacks right like surf on your uh what is it weasel floatzel surf on your something like something to hit the entire field for these battles here because i had just finished a gym so i decided to test my luck taking them on without any strategy i had to reset a few times until oh well he's he's out of the recent that's fine oh 16. this was the moment chad and i decided to never funny number never make a single mistake ever again so we came up with a foolproof plan to defeat the zubats i walked down to pastoria city went to the move reminder and taught floatzel swift okay he's getting pokemon and double battle gotcha with this excellent idea i was able to defeat the grunts without having to rely on good luck the fifth gem was up next and it was easy just aerial ace crash awakes gyarados quick attack the floatzel is it at all i just had this thought can you imagine i'm assuming he's not playing this game on set he's playing it on switch if you don't know there's a difference like when you're loading up a pokemon game you can load it up on set or switch set means that you can't switch out after your opponent's pokemon faint switch lets you switch it'll tell you what they're about to switch into and it'll let you switch to sort of like you know be strategic about it if you play on set i think this game mode might actually be impossible i i don't know maybe aquajet and ariel is the quagsire five badges down three to go before the sixth gem i did have to run a few errands like delivering the old charm to cynthia's grandma in celestic town i traveled through the foggy area on route 210 and accidentally got into a battle of course i had also forgot to use defog so i was going into the battle with a forty percent chance to miss each attack wait fortunately i had ariel okay but the scyther knew quick attack so i had to use my own quick attack hey next was a lovely season which i was able to take out with an aerial ace the final pokemon was the worst case scenario a pro bowl oh my god would not take it out in one hit here's what happened don't miss no no no no okay that's fine you get another shot okay oh if you've gotten fully paired there that's just uh it's just a lot of time wasted that's a lot of time wasted ah every battle is so stressful oh that was lucky the rest of the route i smartened up and used defog so yeah you gotta destroy cyrus in the ruins snagged surf and made my way to pandalav city the man was waiting for me so i aqua jet the strap through an infernape area laces rosary and hair across and quick attack the floatzel okay easy easy before the gym i paid a visit to iron island to see riley to get the hm for strength you have to talk do you have to go in with him i don't remember this cave much i really don't i like i remember this encounter but i don't remember the cave i don't know if it's like dangerous or terrifying specifically this challenge riley the thing is all of the iron island battles are dreaded team battles oh no fortunately though riley just hand strength to you right at the start oh okay went right back to canterlab for the gym the gym was fairly straightforward i did need to pick up a mystic water in pastoria though to ensure an aquajet tail on a scissor that knew quick attack other than that though it was a clean surf sweep for the sixth i for the life of me this is i think one of the most forgettable gym leaders in the entire in the entirety of all pokemon games i could be wrong if you also forget the gym leader like i just saw his name and i'm pretty sure i forgot it byron byron brian i don't know super forgettable just let me know if you also forgot badge team galactic started causing some chaos so i went to lake valor clean things up there then like verity because dawn couldn't handle it herself and up towards snow point to lake acuity uh where it's hailing but that's okay because i had a way to deal with it remember the eevee i picked up by walking just barely into the hail on route 217 and using rare candy on eevee it evolved into glaceon oh sorry immune to really smart okay it was still weak and it doesn't learn any good ice type moves so i chucked it oh my make them god more eight hours eyesight move with 100 accuracy in this gem is ice beam to acquire ice beam you have to spend ten thousand game corner coins ten thousand game corner coins cost two hundred thousand dollars i was completely broke after spending all of my money on the daycare so i came up with a get rich quick scheme makes a raptor hold the luck incense walk up to some snobby rich kids and beat them up repeatedly with the versus seeker until the entirety of their parents wealth is securely fair in my pocket then i blew it all on a single tm with that done it was just a matter of running up and down for another eight hours once glaceon and torteiro were level 100 i was ready to take on the blizzard look at this team level 100 raptor level 100 floats a level 100 torterra level 100 glacion not even like not even at the elite four i think he said he's what five six patches in unclear oh shadowball and went to the move reminder to get ice shards the battle story 217 were straight forwards i shared the pokemon with priority moves cool shadow ball the pokemon resistant to ice and ice beam the rest snowpoint city gym was not as easy the first issue was the puzzle itself a few of the trainers in the gym have snovers then sneezels snovers set up hail with the snow warning ability and in gen 4 weather effects last indefinitely then the steezels have a quick attack forcing my glacion to stay in use a priority move the thing with this is that ice shard or quick attack both don't do enough to ko a sneasel so i needed to find a path through the gym that avoided all trainers to not risk getting into one of these snover sneasel fights it took a while okay so he could he could pass through so i'm like tracing this on my screen he could pass through some of the trainers but he had to avoid snover seasonal sneasel at like all costs i got it i got it this is this is like way beyond my depth i'd never think this is hard playing pokemon games style but after looking at a map of the gym for nearly 15 minutes okay they were able to find a route skipping all of the trainers in the gym while solving the puzzle of course that wasn't the only difficulty in the gym we still had candace candace opens with a sneasel which was simple since it wasn't hailing yet we're able to outfeed it's quick attack with aquajet for the knockout but pokemon 2 is where things get more complicated if candy sends out a bomb of snow next it starts hailing with snow warning obama snow itself can be taken out easily with glaceon's ice cream and the pillow swine that follows it but the reason that hail is a problem is because of frost lasts and its ability snow cloak snow cloak inhale makes moves miss one fifth of the time to guarantee the ko i need to move on glaceon that never misses and as you can clearly see glaceon doesn't have one of those no miss moves well except it does the hail here that causes the accuracy issue also solves it as oh he's about to say blizzard i mean that has to be what he's going to say blizzard increases accuracy in hail but i just thought it went to a hundred accuracy so i thought it would still be affected by evasion is he about to say that blizzard just doesn't miss inside here because that's something i didn't know it turns out blizzard bypasses yeah i had no clue it bypassed i was able to blizzard with 100 confidence and take out the frost last incredible nabbing that's not bad i dealt with the lake acuity stuff then wiped out the galactic headquarters getting the master ball from cyrus along the way and headed up to spear pillar for the end of the world oh you thought i was talking about the whole portal thing no it it's another team but for real though this one was surprisingly easy none of the opposing pokemon no priority just bronzer instantly drowning everything on the field okay he didn't do another dimension real quick and caught giratina with the master ball it wasn't quite as strong as i needed it to be so i biked up and down for two hours until it was level 66. i also beat up the rich kids again for money for some stat boosting items and a few tms i'll explain later then i was able to move through route 222 only fighting a single trainer with a wingle all right kuro level 100 just absolutely crush oh no wingle's defoe get quick attack he didn't go for quick attack laces yes [Music] no which i forgot had quick attack so i reset and got everything all over again when i returned to the wingle i remembered it had quick attack this time yeah now onto the final gem the opposing pokemon are now getting to the levels where every battle needs to be meticulously planned out quick attack the jolteon was the raptor to outspeed his own quick attack earth power the raichu with giratina surf the lux ray with floatzel and with a silk scarf on so raptor quick attack the electafire to get the eighth badge from here it was a quick jog through victory road and a simple rival battle before the elite four gauntlet i taught my team some important tms leveled up giratina one last time to restore balance you had to love the gear team to 69 i was kind of thinking like why didn't he set it to 69 in general also i just now noticed that he made his reset 69 plus one that's hilarious funny i like it and went in now going back now the start of the air in battle was simple aerial ace is yon mega okay earthquake to drapeon area lays the vespaquin and ariel lays the hair across the scissor though was trouble sizzle knew quick attack and it had enough defense where my own quick attack or aquajet couldn't take it out there were no priority moves that could defeat it in one shot so my solution was giratina okay that's smart that the problem with giratina was that it was only level 69 and the level 69 giratina couldn't normally defeat a sizzler in one hit well not without natural gift natural gift is a move that changes its typing and damage based on the berry that you're that's a strategy that's an insane strategy so he's about to give it an akka i think an akaberry is the berry that resists fire and like whenever you give it a berry um it will change natural gift to the type of that berry that's insane not the type of the berry but each berry sets natural gift to a specific type so he could kill the scissor with natural oh my goodness this is this is a master class in strategizing for just like intense pokemon challenges i swear your pokemon is holding give giratina an aqua berry a natural gift becomes a 60 power fire type move oh no i did just that incinerated the scissor i would not have thought of this by the way that's that's next level big brain big iq strats good good job winning the first battle bertha was next but with torterra the battle was simple gingka drain everything except glue score where you use ice beam with glacion okay here's another simple one surf the houndoom aquajet the infernape surf the rapidash and magmortar and aquajet the flareon fossil's such a great party member in this generation i remember getting floatzole in pokemon platinum and just using it and it carried all the way to the end to the elite four i i like super respect that he has this here an aquajet super helps so lucian was next an easy shadow ball sweep except for espeon where i had to quick attack with her the final fight with cynthia was the most meticulously planned cynthia is a tough cynthia is a tough champion i mean i'm super stoked to watch the planning but i can't imagine because cynthia is not easy to beat just like on a regular basis like if you're not over obviously he's over leveled but if you're not over leveled like cynthia is a tough opponent okay let's i'm ready i'm ready for it fight of them all laceon's ice beam couldn't take out the spear tomb in one hit so i had to give it an icicle plate to deal just enough damage okay fair that's good lucario had extreme speed so i had to use giratina guarantino was leveled exactly to 69 and given just enough stat boosting items to out speed giratina was also given choice specs which i picked up in celestial okay cool so earth power just barely ko'd wow i made sure glaceon had enough speed to outspeed the guard chomp okay it and took a kiss with ice beam i taught strapped her close combat to one hit ko the melodic so i guess you can't use something like brave bird on strap to right like even though that's its best attack you can't use it because it does damage to you what i just thought of that that's absurd okay moving on to the rosary to finish off the challenge and beat pokemon platinum without taking a single point of damage dude 138 hours 37 minutes not including the resets and that's how i did it if you enjoyed this and want to see more make sure to subscribe i play games wrong all the time and stop by my game experience if you're into that oh my gosh that's a massive this is a big accomplishment let me let me take a moment and like sort of contemplate over things and then we'll have some outro thoughts here alright so like i said this video it really got me thinking about playing pokemon in different ways and how adding challenges to these games can make them have just essentially infinite replay value and if you watch this video you'll already know that i've recorded a message like i i'm gonna do this at the beginning of the video i should have announced that i'm going to play pokemon crystal without taking a single point of damage i think that this was insane big congrats to small ant this is a smart like it's a smart challenge um the way you went about it was smart like a lot of the strategies you used to get past certain hard parts of the game i think were incredible i i like this video is an absolute banger this concept is great and i perfect execution i mean obviously not perfect 69 plus one resets but still the execution here i i think was incredible like the aquaberry natural gift strap like leveling up things getting like using priority moves to your advantage the blizzard tech that i just didn't know about i'm thoroughly impressed i loved this video i love this video and i want to do this i want to do something like this so
